SUMMARY
An inconsistent Power side kick off the first of three-straight prime-time home games with a clash against the reigning premiers. The eighth-placed Power (6-4) have shown glimpses of what many thought they were capable of after an off-season signing spree, but have also been guilty of basic skill errors that have cost them games. Superstar Robbie Gray needs more support from Charlie Dixon, Jack Watts and Chad Wingard in attack. The forwards will also need to keep a tight hold on Tigers' defensive lynchpin Alex Rance to prevent him from taking easy intercept marks. The Tigers, second on the ladder with a 9-2 record, are absolutely flying. Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin collected the three votes the last time he faced the Power, while Josh Caddy and Shane Edwards are in great form. It's a great test for the Power to see where they sit against the premiership favourites.
WHERE AND WHEN: Adelaide Oval, Friday, June 8, 7.20pm ACST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R15, 2017, Richmond 11.10 (76) d Port Adelaide 8.15 (63) at Adelaide Oval
R15, 2016, Port Adelaide 14.10 (94) d Richmond 8.8 (56) at Adelaide Oval
R6, 2016, Port Adelaide 13.16 (94) d Richmond 8.11 (59) at the MCG
R8, 2015, Richmond 11.10 (76) d Port Adelaide 5.13 (43) at Adelaide Oval
1EF, 2014, Port Adelaide 20.12 (132) d Richmond 11.9 (75) at Adelaide Oval
THE SIX POINTS
1. The Tigers stormed home with eight goals to three in the second half to grab a 13-point victory in the most recent meeting between these two sides last year. Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin was best on ground with 36 disposals and a goal.
2. Richmond is the second-highest scoring team in the competition, second for marks inside 50 and second for inside 50s. Meanwhile, the Power are 13th in scoring, eighth for marks inside 50 and equal eighth for inside 50s.
3. The Tigers have won four of their past seven games against the Power since 2013. Neither side has scored 100 points in a game against the other in the past four years.
4. One advantage for the Power is their tackling pressure. They're ranked second in the League for tackles with an average of 69.1 per game. In contrast, the Tigers are ranked 15th with an average of 60.7.
5. The honours are split between the Power and Tigers in four games at Adelaide Oval with two wins each. The Tigers have won three of their eight games at the venue.
6. In-form Tigers forward Josh Caddy is ranked eighth this season in the Schick AFL Player Ratings, averaging 16.7 points per game. That's helped Caddy rise to 93rd overall after starting the season ranked 159th.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …
Dynamic Power forward Chad Wingard has struggled to have the same influence he had last year. The 24-year-old, who was an All Australian in 2013 and 2015, needs to get more involved and provide the match-winning plays that he's capable of. Wingard has kicked only 11 goals from nine games this season.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 15 points

I have a massive man crush on Robbie Gray. The guy is a jet and wasted at Port. The rest of the team I couldn't give a flying stuff about and their pre match "tradition" is lame. I hope we win by 5+ goals

On the plus side, no putting up with Port ferals this year ;D.

GA mate so I will park myself amongst the great unwashed & hope I get out alive.

haha surprisingly Ive always rated port fans - feral but all is fair in love and war - they are fantastic before and after the game win or lose in my experiences over there - during the game they get white line fever and are rabid which i dont mind. Crows supporters? now they are pure filth - nasty idiots

Port fans kind of remind me of us, a little more feral though.
There's a lot of Richmond about the way their fans react after a loss or a big win.
-
stuff Port and their scum fans, they're the Collingwood of South Australia - never forget that.... :shh
-
Looks like it's going to be K.I.S.S. wet weather footy.

Yup got nothing for port Adelaide. From their lame inxs sing along at the start of games to their hilarious attempts to be known as the most successful club in Australia due to their 20 or whatever number it is SANFL premierships. Just wait till they drop back down the ladder for the tarps to come back. Also kochies a tool.
-
Odds have flipped with Dusty out. Port now $1.70 favourite; Tiges out to $2.10.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2018/12/port-v-rich
-
Pressure on power at home and after last weeks loss.Got to stay with them 1 qtr and play our game. There midfield is not fast and a tad slow need to expose them as they don't like to defend either.Let's not let Watts have his game of the year against us like when he was at dees.
-
I reckon we're stuffed tonight - they'll be fired up as its a massive game for them and with 2 of our best 3 mids out, probably dont have the cattle to win over there
-
Dusty is not having the same influence this year and is basically cream in 2018
Reckon our structures will hold up and the machine will keep on rolling .
What an opportunity for Richmond to scare the other contenders....we can win with or without Dusty.
-
NO LATE CHANGES
FINAL INTERCHANGES
Port Adelaide: Steven Motlop, Tom Rockliff, Jack Watts, Dan Houston

-
I believe in Miles and that he can give us first use in the contest
-
Fine night but slippery under foot.
Dimma said we want to take away Port's game of uncontested marks.
-
Poor start. Not switched on.
-
Brandon :facepalm.
-
Good pass Miles to Nank on the lead 40 out. Misses.
At least we finally got it forward.
1 - 7
-
How many times have we run over the ball so far tonight?! :scream.
-
Miles chips to Conca on 50. Chips short to a contest :banghead.
-
Any chance of going to the top of the square, Reece?
-
If Rance did that it would be called a dive!
-
Let's hope diving is still on the agenda on monday
-
Gray diving ::).
-
Any chance we can get someone front and square at the contest?
-
Great kick by Menadue to Higgins on the wing.
-
Ball up. Lambert hands to Macca who hits up Jack 45 out. Goal! :gotigers
Boy, did we need that!
Rich 1.1-7
Port 2.1-13
-
What was that kick, Reece?
Rushed point to us.
8 - 13
-
If you ever wondered why Conca is useless that was it.
-
Free to Short 60 out. Goes to the top of the squaere. Comes to ground. Caddy has a snap but misses.
9 - 13
-
Rance looks spooked
Conca ::)
-
Cotch saves the day at HB :bow.
We get it forward. Astbury from 60 to the square and Sheds crumbs a goal :gotigers
Rich 2.3-15
Port 2.1-13
-
Grigg out of the middle. Miles collects and kicks it long to Sheds who run in and kicks another :gotigers
Rich 3.3-21
Port 2.1-13
-
Could have let that go out for OOTF, Nank!
-
Stupid handpass Brandon.
-
Short OOTF on the wing. Then we give Port a chance to have a shot on the siren :banghead.
Thankfully they miss.
Quarter time
Richmond 3.3-21
Port Adel. 2.2-14
Goals: Edwards 2, Riewoldt.
-
BEllis :banghead :banghead
Very poor that quarter
-
Took us about 10 mins to switch on. When we finally did we looked dangerous. Too many sloppy brainfades giving Port chances to go forward though.
-
Has anyone else noticed that when we give the ball straight back to the opposition it’s usually either Conca or BEllis that’s done it. :banghead
Useless players. We need to move on from those two.
-
Cotch showing why he is captain. That 12-point play (saving a goal which set up a goal for us) was sheer brilliance :bow.
-
Has anyone else noticed that when we give the ball straight back to the opposition it’s usually either Conca or BEllis that’s done it. :banghead
Useless players. We need to move on from those two.
After the bye
Ellis -> Houli
Conca -> Prestia
-
Has anyone else noticed that when we give the ball straight back to the opposition it’s usually either Conca or BEllis that’s done it. :banghead

Conca poor as well
-
Grigg right foot kick :o and finds Jack who takes a good contested mark on the lead 40 out. Goal :gotigers
Jack is on tonight :thumbsup
Rich 4.3-27
Port 2.2-14
-
So you can do one-handed handballs, ump? ::)
-
Where is Butler?
-
Shocking kick Astbury. Too high to Georgie and spoiled.
Lambert pushed as he snaps and it's across the goal OOTF.
-
Poor by Rance
Didn't need to and shouldnt have got involved in that contest
Gifted them a goal really
-
Port got out the back :banghead. Ballwatching and letting it bounce for Gray to tap it forward :banghead
20 - 27
-
Where is Butler?
Spectating.
-
Really dumb by Grigg
:banghead
-
Great smother by Rance but his teammates gifted Port another goal. Fumbles and running over the ball :facepalm.
-
Really dumb by Grigg
:banghead
And again
-
Really dumb by Grigg
:banghead
And again :facepalm.
Suddenly we've gone all panicky with Port just knocking the ball forward at every chance.
27 all.
-

Useless players. We need to move on from those two.
After the bye
Ellis -> Houli
Conca -> Prestia
Yep
-
Can someone always stand defensive side of a contest so Port can't just tap it forward to space to run onto the ball? ::)
-
Really dumb by Grigg
:banghead
And again :facepalm.
Suddenly we've gone all panicky with Port just knocking the ball forward at every chance.
27 all.
Costly fumbles in front of their goals and they just queued up.
Need to be better.
-
Some blokes panicking more than others :banghead
-
Fumble fumble fumble.
So there's no holding the ball rule against Port? ::) :banghead
Point to Butler.
28 - 27
-
Well done miles
Composure
-
Good spoil by Floss at HB. Cotch again so calm to Ellis. To Jack who marks 60 out and hits up Miles 40 out. Goal :gotigers
Needed that one!
Rich 5.4-34
Port 4.3-27
-
Well done miles
Composure
Impressive for a bloke who's probably playing for his career.
That spot is there for you Snipper!!
-
Two dropped sitters in defence. Rance mucked himself up not sure to take it in the hands or chest.
Rushed point to Port.
34 - 28
-
Shocking by Higgins, helps gift Port a goal
-
Poor turnover in the corridor by Higgins.
Watch the freaking hips and you'll never get run around :banghead
34 all.
-
Shock9ng by Higgins, helps gift Port a goal
Needed a rest this week. Pretty shocked he was picked. Showing, he's been v poor tonight.
-
Shock9ng by Higgins, helps gift Port a goal
its time he had a spell in the vfl
-
:banghead
Cotchin has been brilliant but those misses :banghead
-
Why wasnt that a free to Caddy
-
Macca a couple of bounces along the wing. Goes long with a shank. Ball up 30 out. Port clear twice but we get it back. Cotch from 35 misses. Chipped it instead of kick through the ball.
We get it back after the kick-in. Macca on the boundary does a Dusty don;'t argue but misses too.
36 - 34
-
Why wasnt that a free to Caddy
It was but we're not getting frees this qtr ::).
-
Port in front. Made us pay for our misses.
36 - 40
-
Why wasnt that a free to Caddy
It was but we're not getting frees this qtr ::).
This year

Port goal.
36 - 46
-
Another Port throw in the tackle not paid ::).
Miles clipped in the head over the ball not paid ::)
Port goal.
36 - 46
We won't be winning tonight with the calls going the way they are so far. We've been well below our best but in a tight contest they've been significant, some of the non-calls.
-
Disgraceful by BEllis
Non competitive
We're in strife
-
Pathetic Richmond. Panicking again and gifting away possession to Port for easy goals :banghead.
Soft last 5 mins!
36 - 52
-
How to lose a game of footy in 3 easy steps. Really poor tiges.
-

-
How to lose a game of footy in 3 easy steps. Really poor tiges.
:clapping
Yep. Soft! We've gone to water.
-
Where's my stuff?
-
Some schmuck mozzed Astbury during the week about how durable hes become after injury now he's gone down.
-
Ump is correct that time, Reece.
-
#Portfreekick
They are flogging us in every statistic, it’s not just the frees.
-
3 Tigers collide going for the same mark in defence. No talking :scream.
Some schmuck mozzed Astbury during the week about how durable hes become after injury now he's gone down.
Garthwaite debut?
-
The biased commentary is sickening
-
Need get back to basics and tighten up.
-
Half-time
Richmond 3.3 5.6-36
Port Adel. 2.2 9.5-59
Goals: Edwards 2, Riewoldt 2, Miles.
Pathetic soft quarter Tiges. Repeat of the 3rd qtr against the Eagles a few weeks back.
-
So evidently you are allowed to throw and drop the ball whenever you like.
Razor Ray :thumbsdown
-
Ump is correct that time, Reece.
Don't agree at all.
-
Are our small forwards playing? Lift!
-
Ive never seen so many dropping the balls called play on ever.
So apparently you can just drop the ball when you get tackled now. :banghead
-

Some schmuck mozzed Astbury during the week about how durable hes become after injury now he's gone down.
Garthwaite debut?
Nah there was an article online about how David only played 20 odd games in his first 5 seasons and now he's so durable etc etc. As i was reading it i could geel the bad juju coming
-
Fumbling, making tackles not stick, poor kicking not defending and not keeping it simple.A few need a rocket big time. What's Astbury done ?.
-
So many MIA
Butler
Castagna
Moore
Edwards
Caddy
Higgins
Menadue
Lambert
Then there is those having shockers
BEllis
Conca
-
#Portfreekick
They are flogging us in every statistic, it’s not just the frees.
True and we were hopeless in that last 15 mins but that still doesn't excuse Port continually getting away with throws in the tackle all night.
-
The Power have put together a dominant last 20 minutes, smashing Richmond in contested possession 40 to 17, disposals 82 to 46, kicking efficiency 71 per cent to 50 per cent and have kicked 6.2.38 to 1.3.9 over the time period.
Ollie Wines and Jared Polec have had huge second quarters for the Power. Wines has had 13 disposals, eight contested possessions, four clearances and four inside 50s for the term, while Polec has had 11 disposals, seven contested possessions and a goal.
Port Adelaide dominated the inside 50 count 21 to nine for the term and lead 38 to 21 for the match.
Richmond's 21 inside 50s are its lowest in a first half this year and second lowest in any half this season.

-
Dixon drops it in the tackle = no free again ::)
-
Moore a bit clueless tonight

Georgie misses on the run :scream.
37 - 59
-
We got a free in the Fwd 50 :gobdrop :gobdrop
-
Well at least Rioli will be back next week
-
Hooray you finally saw one Ump! Only took until midway thru the 3rd ::).
Jack pushed in the back in the ruck 35 out. Goal :gotigers
Jack has 3.
Rich 6.7-43
Port 9.5-59
-
Skills a shocking tonight. Were our worse enemy.
-
Right call against Rance
-
Sums up our night. We fight long and hard for a goal and then they get the easy centre clearance and free kick (it was there) in front goal.
Thankfully Dixon missed.
43 - 60
-
#freekickPort
-
Dumb :banghead by Grimes
Gifted another ome
-
Astbury back on.
-
Westhoff dive.
-
Grigg pathetic
Spectating
-
Seriously we are playing 3 short in our forward line
-
Moore a witches hat tonight up forward.
-
Seriously we are playing 3 short in our forward line
Very true.
-
A nothing kick from Miles. At this level those need to be nailed on the run (at least score).
-
Moore a witches hat tonight up forward.
Add Butler and Castagna
And then chuck in Menadue for good measure
-
Some blokes showing when the heats turned up they flee the kitchen
-
LOL reece. Fulled the Port defence with a classic shank of his. Georgie marks 35 out. Misses :scream.
44 - 66
-
wtf is with nobody able to tackle, take a mark or pick up the ball, something I am missing. and the umpires are idiots.
-
How woeful was that?
How many missed tackles?
-
Conca had Wines cold and still mistackles :facepalm.
Then another mistackle on the wing allows Port to find 3 players free in their F50 :banghead
44 - 67
-
Cannot believe we are on 4 goals down when we are playing so horribly bad
-
omfg, out on the full...If they would concentrate on stuffing kicking the ball to each other instead of pissy wrestling and fresh air blind shots
-
Too many Tiges shouldn't have got out of bed this morning. Making U10s mistakes :facepalm.
-
Edwards is our best again.
-
Cannot believe we are on 4 goals down when we are playing so horribly bad
We are actually on top in general play this quarter but are so inept to make any use of it.
Edit: As I type that we go coast to coast and Georgie goals on the run :gotigers.
Rich 7.8-50
Port 10.7-67
-
Goal
We are back in it by default
-
Edwards is our best again.
In the 3rd
So ,many MIA tonight
-
3/4 time
Richmond 3.3 5.6 7.8-50
Port Adel. 2.2 9.5 10.7-67
Goals: Riewoldt 3, Edwards 2, Miles, Castagna.
-
We are totally playing against our foundation of our game plan and success. Our skills pathetic.Passengers everywhere.
-
Jack & Edwards our best
Miles has been reasonable
But so many have been crap
-
Edwards is our best again.
My top 3 would be Cotch, Jack & Edwards (move into the midfield that qtr).
Otherwise, too many passengers plus brainfades tonight from those who know better.
-
my favorite bit is the falling over after some particularly incompetent attempt and then the lack concern getting up in any sort of rush to put the pressure back on. They all turn into old men or something?
-
For all those who like Conca..... :banghead
50 % efficiency. 6 clangers. And it’s only 3/4 time. :help
-
The sad thing is Port aren't much chop based on tonight. As WP said, they should be 10+ goals in front based on how poor we've been. This was clearly a winnable game even without Dusty but too many Tigers haven't shown up switched on to play.
-
I don’t think we’ll win this.
Too many passengers. Can’t tackle. Can’t kick. Hopeless tonight.
-
Edwards is our best again.
My top 3 would be Cotch, Jack & Edwards (move into the midfield that qtr).
Otherwise, too many passengers plus brainfades tonight from those who know better.
Thought Cotch went missing at times in the 3rd
But he's been good
-
For all those who like Conca..... :banghead
50 % efficiency. 6 clangers. And it’s only 3/4 time. :help
Come on get real... clearly one of our best tonight. At least he gets the pill!!
-
Another broken tackle when a Port player should have been nailed.
-
That mised tackle by Cotch just then what I'm talking about
-
Grigg has been a worry tonight
Panic Helicopter kicks
-
BEllis :banghead
Afraid to get hit, soft custard handball
-
Reckon we're stuffed
Started this qtr panic stricken
-
Geez we've been poor in the 50/50 marking contests. Not only lost most of them but allowed the Port player to mark after we've conceded the front position :banghead.
-
Butler runs over the ball again :banghead
-
I've found Menadue
If anyone's interested
-
Lambert marks 50 out. Gifts sideways to Caddy but he misses.
51 - 68
-
George takes a great mark
And goals
-
Georgie takes a speckie 30 out :clapping.
Now the hard part = kicking straight :-\.
Never in doubt :snidegrin :gotigers.
Rich 8.9-57
Port 10.8-68
-
Butler needs a rest in the reserves. pee poor effort.
-
Looks like we've moved Broad forward
Had to do something Moore's been abysmal
-
Dumb Higgo. Play for the forward stoppage.
-
Very silly by Higgins
-
im sick of higgins. Dumb football
-
Port are just flooding and chipping round the stuffing boundary like a scrub team and it is gonna pay off for em
-
Come on tigers lift :gotigers
-
3 Tiger defenders spoiling each other again :facepalm.
Point to Port.
57 - 69
-
im sick of higgins. Dumb football
Share your angst
Been alot of dumb footy
-
Terrible kick Macca. OOTF.
-
School boy stuff.
-
Fumble panic fumble in defence again.
57 - 70
-
grigg you stuffing spaz
-
Grigg had the sit and didn't jump :scream.
Short long bomb is a point.
58 - 70
-
Grigg just cost us a goal
-
KICK IT MILES!
-
Honestly if we can play a decent patch of footy for 5 minutes we can win this game
-
Miles should have kicked not handballed
-
Honestly if we can play a decent patch of footy for 5 minutes we can win this game
Scary isnt it
-
Good tackle Georgie 80 out. Long inside. Ball up 20 out.
We didn't set up the wall and the quick kick by Port finds a man of theirs :banghead.
-
we never seem to get the same free kicks in our forward line do we
-
Westhoff had a fistful of Cotch's jumper in the ruck = no free ::).
-
Fall in a Tiger's back in the tackle = no free :-\.
Then #freekickPort.
-
Poster to them
58 - 71
Need 3 scoring shots now.
-
BEllis does it again.
Didnt even attempt to punch it just looking for a free :banghead
-
We need 3 goals in 5 mins
-
Ellis another fumble :scream
-
Too many fumbles tonight. Haven't kicked enough. Dinky hanballs.
-
Ellis another fumble :scream
He's been
Terrific, just terrific TM
-
Ballwatching again allows Port to take a uncontested mark .
-
#freekickPort
-
People wont like it but right call on Miles he ducked
-
Love to know the free kick count in F50s tonight.
-
Oh look, another free in their forward fifty. If that happened up our end it would of been too high LOL
-
We've been ordinary tonight. Can't believe we are this close. Should have lost by a bit more i reckon.
You can see why Miles doesn't get a run at this level. Not the worst tonight but not up to it.
-
People wont like it but right call on Miles he ducked
Happy if it's called at both ends for both sides.
-
We're cooked
And have no one to blame but ourselves
Really disappointing performance
-
Shut up Razor, get on with it and just do you job ::).

Terrible. The worst this year.

Agree but that one was right
Carey said, umps been really bad on the holding ball calls
-
People wont like it but right call on Miles he ducked
it was and i have seen enough of miles
its clear why he doesnt get a game. His possessions are meaningless
-
Final Score
Richmond 3.3 5.6 7.8 8.10-58
Port Adel. 2.2 9.5 10.7 10.12-72
Goals: Riewoldt 3, Edwards 2, Castagna 2, Miles.
As bad as we were all night, we lost the game on the scoreboard in the last 15 mins of the 2nd qtr.
-
Can't win every week. Be a few changes next week hopefully and a few back in.
-
No disrespect to port they arent much better kept us in the game and we still couldn't take our chances.
-

I’d rather Miles before Conca 100 times over. Conca is the worst turnover merchant since Taylor Hunt.
-
Just really disappointed
Will turn my attention to selection for next week
Some blokes simply cannot and should not play next week
-
poo stuffing game, what a feed of garbage, Port are rabble, looked like rabble and yet we were worse.

Umps now are really bad on HTB calls in most games and that's why others/media say most games have become so congested and ugly.

x2.
Back to the basics at training before the Geelong game. Not switched on and dished up U10s stuff tonight :banghead.

Butler (worst game I’ve seen him play).
Conca (kills us with every possession)
Higgins (too raw for the big games)
Macintosh (doesn’t do enough as a wingman and he was bloody terrible tonight)
Moore (we he plays like that you want to see Townsend back because he atleast will Tackle)

Thought Grigg was awful. Worst game he's played IMV
Moore; showed tonight why I'm not sold. Clueless, nil forward pressure, was like a deer in the headlights
Higgins overawed and as result made some silly errors
Menadue, didn't thinl he was there until I found him in the 3rd

Butler is concerning as he isn't consistent enough and doesn't use his assets nearly enough during game. Needs a spell as one good game every 6 doesn't cut it.
Conca well as far as I'm concerned was one of our best again.
Higgins is not up to it just yet.
McIntosh has been putrid all year.
Moore was not competitive tonight and well beaten by a fellow youngster.

Easier to name those that played okay. 3/4ers of the team had their worst games for a long long time.

All round poor game by most. Too many errors and crap decisions including umpires :thumbsdown but overall it was disappointing and some should consider themselves lucky should they be selected next week. I am sick of Griggs kicking.... :wallywink

the ladder flatters us given the teams we have beaten. I think we are no certainties for top 4

I'll be interested to see how anyone can defend BEllis tonight
Ditto Moore, Butler and Menadue

Maybe we miss Martin, Houli and Prestia more than we realise.

You are kind on Butler. Played okay in 2 games this year...drop him would be my call. Rioli back and Stengle needs to be rewarding.
-
Bellis -surely an AFL record for most peeweak efforts in contests in one match .... :clapping
Was Menadue playing?
Miles - slow useless stat gatherer at this level now....a lamp post would've been more effective at the centre bounces...
Conca .....yep....Conca..... :banghead
Butler - probably would've claimed the soft efforts record if Bellis wasn't playing...
Lambert - it's not stuffing soccer...
McIntosh....a malfunctioning automaton....
Grigg - time to hang 'em up mate....thanks for your service...
Moore....a step backwards tonight.....
Higgins....back to the twos for you kid....
Nankervis - love ya big fella but easily your worst game for the club....
Broad - becoming a bit of a panic merchant down back lately... :shh

Bring back Townsend :pray

Grigg looked cooked tonight. Higgins looked all at sea. Conca had one of the poorer 20+ possession games I've seen. Kicks the ball like he's shooting a flare in the outer at the A League

grigg went a long way in losing that game for us.
That pathetic effort when we were 2 v 1 in the goal square was the worst decision he has made in 5 years.
he should be dropped solely because of that effort.

Luckily we have only 2 more interstate games against GWS & GC. :shh
7 at the G. :rollin :gotigers

So Lambert had the most possessions for us
Perfect example of quantity not meaning much. 26 ordinary possessions

Is it just me but have our skills dropped off this year?.Turnovers, kicking efficency panicking and just returning poor habits.

Dimma loves the contested footy stat to explain games and will no doubt use it as the main excuse for the loss tonight in his presser.
Our centre clearance stats have been ordinary this year IIRC but tonight it was off the charts. Not only did we give them easy forward entries straight after a goal so we couldn't generate any scoreboard momentum but we spent most of the night on the back foot trying to attack from our backline. A clear recipe for losing.
-
Is it just me but have our skills dropped off this year?.Turnovers, kicking efficency panicking and just returning poor habits.
Compared to the finals then yes. But this time last year we were just coming off a period of 4 straight losses, most of which where we choked from winnable positions.
-
As much as a Friday night win sets up your whole weekend a loss can set it back...and it’s a long weekend :banghead
-

And we just blew a chance to retake top spot while Melbourne can knock us out of the top 2 if they beat the Pies on Monday :banghead.
-
Not our worst performance for the year, but certainly that lapse in the second cost us the game and we probably played our worst period of the season when the game was on the line.
Not at panic stations, but jeepers it was a disappointing loss.
Plenty to work on.
I don't think we're too "Dusty centric" as some would put it, but Dusty at full flight might have been the difference in a tight scrappy affair.
Not winning the flag this year unless we improve dramatically on that.

That side last night carrying to many passenger's players with poor kicking and skills and liabilities.Conca,Macca,Higgins,Miles and a few others.Top sides will take advantage of that and they will get found out.

I'm not sure about that I think even during the year we had better skills and kicking for me going back to a few bad habits maybe carrying a few to many passenggers to.

How many goals after half time did they kick? 2? We would have won without that patch in the second quarter.

It was a mammoth display of 1 goal, entertaining footy at its best and reeks of a coach under the pump

Lol, yep, 100%
We couldn't have played much worse and we went down by 14 points.
I'm claiming the moral victory!

Amazing how we keep getting the "rub of the green" yet still keep losing the free kick counts.... :shh
-
Amazing how we keep getting the "rub of the green" yet still keep losing the free kick counts.... :shh
I don't understand how everything in their forward 50 was either holding the ball or holding the man, yet down our end it was play on. In the last quarter Howard gets the ball, ducks into a tackle to draw a free kick and umpire says play on because he ducked. Only a minute or two later exactly the same thing happens down their end and they get a shot on goal. Or Ray telling Conca to just try and throw the ball when he is tackled without prior... because it must have been a League themed round with the State of Origin and he was letting them throw it all night.
The germ that called their deliberate out of bounds a 'skill error' was a joke. From now on I think we should just argue that everything is a skill error and is play on.
-
Knew we were in for a long night when I counted about 4 blatant free kicks not awarded to us within the first two minutes of the match.... :shh

Jack backs Tigers to hit back hard
AFL media
9 June 2018
Jack Riewoldt is confident Richmond can rebound strongly from Friday night’s 14-point loss to Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.
The star key forward believes the Tigers have learned some valuable lessons out of the hard-fought contest.
“You don’t want them (losses), but when you accept these results, you can either look at them as road blocks, or opportunities to grow,” Riewoldt told Channel Seven post-match.
“We’ve had a great attitude towards that sort of stuff before and really bounced back well . . .
“We just got beaten in contested ball. We had a part of the game, about eight minutes, I think we went down by 22 (contested possessions).
“Nothing good’s going to come when you get beaten in contested ball by 22 in the space of eight minutes.
“We thought we played okay for three quarters . . . but we just gave them a bit too much head start there in that second half.
“We were really confident at half-time and we felt that we could get back in the game. We just didn’t take our chances . . . a few fumbles across that centre-forward area there, where we really could have hit the scoreboard.
“But they’re the lessons you learn.
“We’ve got a bit of a younger squad in tonight. We’ve got a few people out, obviously Dustin (Martin) didn’t play tonight, as well.
“So it was a good chance for our younger guys to travel and learn what it’s like to play in front of a pretty hostile environment.
“It’s all part of the season, it’s all part of the journey.”
Riewoldt, who was one of Richmond’s best players against the Power, with 11 disposals, five marks, three goals and four tackles, has his sights set firmly on next Sunday’s big clash against an in-form Geelong at the MCG.
“It’s no secret that we play well at the ‘G’. So we’re looking forward to that and then, hopefully, spring-boarding into the back half of the season,” he said.

From Robbo's 'tackle' column:
RICHMOND’S CONTEST WORK
No Dusty, no Richmond is extreme commentary. But when your best player is not playing, clearly there is an impact. The Tigers got smashed around the contest on Friday night, losing the contested footy by 34, which was their second-worst result for the year. (Their worst was against Adelaide in Round 2). They lost the ground ball by 15, which was only the second time they have lost this category this year. (also against Adelaide). Best they finish top two and avoid Adelaide Oval methinks.

can someone shed some light on what "losing contested footy by 34" and losing ground ball by 15, which is only the second time they have lost this category this year" means?
Also, just recalled that freekicks are contested possessions so given that we're always getting reamed in the differential, its not that surprising that we're ranked well down in contested footy.
-
a free kick is a contested possession. haha very true and good point.
Nothing surprises with this sport, but what a farce that one is.
-
I didn’t believe it but it’s true.....
Champion Data describes it as: “A possession which has been won when the ball is in dispute.
“Includes looseball-gets, hardball-gets, contested marks, gathers from a hitout and frees for.”
https://www.sen.com.au/news/2018/05/16/do-contested-possessions-really-matter/
I will consider this very differently now including our free kicks against. Makes our wins even sweeter in some way considering how much we get frees against us.

so given the fact the article stated we lost ground ball by 15 only the second time we've lost that count this season, I'd say that contrary to what the big picture stats say - we're actually travelling very well in contested possessions at the coal face or 'groundball'.
