The Hawks' run home was 10-2 but they only played 3 top 8 sides - GWS (lost), Geelong (just held on) and Sydney (minus Buddy & Parker). The Hawks also lost to bottom 4 side Brisbane twice this year who exposed them with speed and broke down Hawthorn's latest team defensive set-up which has been the key to their wins.

Let’s not forget Hannebery was off early in the game with a corkie. That’s like missing Jack, Cotchin and Dusty against Hawthorn

I feel like Hawthorn have been punching above their weight all season.  Surely that will be exposed Friday week.

Think we've done well to get Hawthorn as our opponents.

Can’t be too surprised tbh, they’ve done this exact schedule for a few years.

Although a caller on SEN said the AFL advertised the 7 - 9, so they booked flights for that night.

Hawks to go back to the tape in bid to tame Tigers: Shiels They wont be the only ones studying tape, am sure Dimma and Co. will be trawling the latest Hawks video also. Still dont think they have played against the type of pressure we applied apart from the last time we played them. You can watch tapes endlessly but its how you execute under pressure that decides your fate.

After the siren: Stand by for a September special

Ashley Browne
afl.com.au
Aug 27, 2018

... there is one match-up which stands head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to the opening weekend of the finals.

It is the qualifying final between Richmond and Hawthorn, which as AFL.com.au noted last week, is 93 years in the making.

After 24 flags between them and nine Septembers in which both clubs have been combatants at the same time, this will be the first time they have met in a final.

It will be billed in many quarters as a ‘master versus pupil’ match-up between coaches Alastair Clarkson and Damien Hardwick, but that is a lazy description and perhaps insulting to Hardwick.

The Richmond coach has engineered an almost flawless premiership defence to this stage of the year. Unbeaten at home, the Tigers bring their game with them and challenge their opponents to find a way to beat them. And nobody has.

The Tigers are giving every impression of a side that has another gear in them. They've been playing dead rubbers for the best part of a month, simultaneously giving exposure at the level to every player that might be needed through the finals, resting any player with a significant niggle and still fulfilling important objectives such as getting Jack Riewoldt the Coleman Medal and Dustin Martin enough of a sniff in the last month to suggest a second Brownlow is not out of the question.

So why are we so excited for the Thursday night clash? Because of the Hawks.

Clarkson’s men enter the finals with six straight wins under their belt. After losing to Brisbane in round 16 the Hawks were 10th, lines were being drawn through their players futures (this columnist would like to personally apologise to Ricky Henderson and Paul Puopolo), obituaries for 2018 were being written and supporters were openly calling for the club to ‘tank’ the rest of the season in anticipation of an early selection at the so-called ‘super draft’ later this year.

But that was to discount what a proud group these Hawks are, and a coach at the peak of his powers. The Clarkson of 2012-2016 was more of a manager, juggling the pieces on the chessboard and using his significant powers of motivation to extract the best from an experienced group. Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell, Jordan Lewis at al didn't need to be taught how to play, their collective talents just needed to be harnessed.

But what Hawthorn people say is energising Clarkson now is that he is coaching once again in the purest sense of the word. He has gone back to his teaching roots and the rapid development of Harry Morrison, Conor Nash, James Worpel and Teia Miles over these last few weeks has brought a freshness to the Hawks and zest to their coach.

As recently as last week he said he believes next year and the year after is when this group will be at its peak. But as he said on Saturday night after the comeback win over Sydney, an “opportunity” has now been presented to the Hawks and “who knows where it will take us if it stares us in the face?”

As he walked the SCG boundary line post-game, he was already scheming. The Tigers are high and mighty, but their fearsome MCG advantage will be largely negated when they take on the Hawks. Opportunity has indeed come knocking, which is what makes this qualifying final such a mouthwatering encounter.

What can the master tactician, with 10 days to prepare, come up with to challenge the best team in the competition?

'Very hard' for fans: Hawks and Tigers on Thursday night final

Michael Gleeson
The Age
27 Aug 2018

Richmond were blindsided by the timing of the Thursday night blockbuster final which left both the Hawks and Tigers disappointed for fans who won't be able to be there for the weeknight blockbuster.

Richmond had been led to believe they would be scheduled to play a Friday night final and had instructed marketing, sales and ticketing staff to work on that basis.

Both clubs said it made no difference to them in a football sense but they were surprised and disappointed that families with young school age children, and country members, would not be able to attend the qualifying final on Thursday night at the MCG.

Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett said the decision was "tough" and "very very hard for a lot of those who might wish to be there".

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said the club had expected to be playing their final on a Friday.

"We had assumed and had told our people internally to plan around a Friday night final based on history and the fact Thursday lent itself to an interstate game," Gale said.

"I had assumed we would be Friday night and we were surprised to be scheduled for a Thursday night final.

"From a football point of view it is no different, but it is going to make it hard, with strong regional support and families, for many of our members to attend.

"It will stil be well supported but it makes it that much harder for families."

The AFL revealed the week one fixture of the finals on Sunday night, opting to open with the Tigers and Hawks on Thursday night, followed by the Melbourne-Geelong elimination final on Friday night at the MCG, the Sydney derby elimination final on Saturday afternoon at the SCG, and the West Coast-Collingwood qualifying final on Saturday night at Perth's Optus Stadium.

Kennett said it would be extremely difficult for families to go to their final, and that the fixture on a Thursday night "does make it tough".

“The AFL are in control of this, we have no say in real terms as you appreciate,” Kennett said on SEN on Monday morning.

“We not going to satisfy our members, Richmond and Hawthorn, we are not going to satisfy our membership requirements. I am cognisant of our membership.

"It’s going to be very hard for a lot of families, younger people to attend the ground because of the hour and the fact of Thursday night.

“It’s almost impossible for any of our 10,000 members from Tasmania to come across, let alone our other 10-15,000 around the country.

“Putting it at night and particularly on a Thursday night is very very hard for a lot of those who might wish to be there.

“Putting the interests of our shareholders, our stakeholders, our members first, it does make it tough. We have no say in that.

“There is no point me complaining, I’m just stating the reality that it does eliminate, not just ours, but a lot of Richmond supporters from even contemplating being there.”

This will be the first time that Richmond and Hawthorn have played in a final.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said on Monday that the football perspective was different to that of the administration.

"I think you get a different perspective from a player and coaching point of view than you might get from a chairman of a footy club," said Clarkson.

“We’re pretty much just in the space of being delighted that we’ve been able to qualify and get the opportunity to play against a formidable opponent at the MCG."

AFL defends Tigers/Hawks Thursday final decision

By Luke Sicari
SEN
27 Aug 2018

The AFL has defended their decision to schedule the Richmond versus Hawthorn Qualifying Final.

Fans are outraged at the decision to put two big Victorian clubs on a weeknight, but AFL fixture boss Travis Auld believes it’s no different to the Perth and Adelaide Thursday night finals over the past two years.

“They go to school in Western Australia and South Australia,” Auld told SEN’s Whateley.

“Families and kids getting to the game from outside of CBD or having school the next day, that issue applies anywhere where we play.

“Our expectations are we will get 90,000 plus, we are confident with those teams and the strength of those teams that there will be a really strong crowd.”

Auld also described how the fairness of rest for all eight finals clubs is another factor in placing a game on Thursday night.

“It’s the week off between the home and away and the first week of the finals that’s given us an opportunity to launch finals with a Thursday night, which then has taken a game out of the Sunday,” he said.

“It also makes it easier in terms of day breaks.

“If you look at week two of the finals, we will have an eight day break and a seven day break and two seven day breaks.

“That’s really important to the clubs that are competing.”

However, dual premiership player David King isn’t buying that argument from the league, saying teams why finish first should be able to determine their own fixture.

“If you finish top on the ladder, I think you should choose when you want to play,” he said.

“That should be one of the benefits of finishing top of the table.

“They’ve got Dan Butler, who is not a marquee player by any stretch, but he is an important player for Richmond.

“There is no way he can play next Saturday (in the VFL) and then back-up on the Thursday into a final.

“Why are Richmond ruling a player out now because of the fixture?”

The breaks of the game behind finals fixture

By Jake Niall
The Age
27 August 2018 — 7:07pm

Ideally, Richmond and Hawthorn would be playing on Friday night, rather than on the Thursday nights that are less friendly to families and especially regional stuff. That said, the MCG will still be filled with 90,000-plus when these heavily supported clubs play in what will be the first final between the clubs in VFL/AFL history.

The television ratings will have Channel Seven doing cartwheels, too. The AFL made this call, safe in the knowledge that the game would sell out, no matter when it was played.

It's unlikely there will be ramifictions from fixturing the game a day earlier, besides some irritated country and Tasmanian members. The Tigers still expect Kane Lambert and Dan Butler to play, albeit Butler will probably require a run in the VFL this weekend to ensure he's match-ready.

Just as the Tigers weren't entirely happy with being forced to wear an alternate jumper on grand final day but quickly forgot about it as the big day beckoned, they've already moved on. As the members' voice, Jeff Kennett isn't happy, but Alastair Clarkson doesn't give a fig.

The major surprise in the week one finals fixture was that the AFL did not fixture West Coast versus Collingwood on the Thursday evening. It had been widely assumed this would be the first final, with the Tigers and Hawks on Friday night, the Sydney derby on Saturday and Melbourne and Geelong on Saturday night.

When the AFL makes a call such as this, our natural - well-founded - tendency is to look at the box office appeal of these games. This time, though, the AFL insists that the decision was a case of prioritising football considerations - namely, that the lower ranked winners would be disadvantaged in week two of the finals when they played the losers of the Eagles-Pies and Tigers-Hawks games.

This is an interesting argument, because the top four losers are higher ranked and one could argue that the advantage of finishing higher in the regular season has already been greatly diluted by the establishment of the pre-finals bye.

Had West Coast versus Collingwood been on Saturday, the loser would get a nine-day break compared to Sydney and Greater Western Sydney's seven days; the league suggested this wasn't fair. Collingwood certainly isn't complaining about being fixtured on Saturday night.

They were always playing the Eagles in Perth at night and the extra two days will give them the option of playing the likes of Flynn Appleby and Jeremy Howe (less likely) in the VFL this weekend. Under the discarded alternative, the winner of the Melbourne-Geelong game would have had a six day break in the second week, compared to Richmond and Hawthorn's seven days.

The AFL judged that they couldn't schedule the Sydney derby final on Friday night because they couldn't play two MCG finals on Saturday. This leads us to new reality that if the Sunday final is not dead, it is certainly comatose and will only be revived on those rare occasions when there are four MCG finals - as the AFL acknowledged on Monday.

Thursday nights have supplanted Sundays in the first finals. This is a direct consequence of the bye before the finals, which has enabled the AFL to play Thursday night finals.

While the AFL can say that Sunday finals create a shorter break, it is also convenient that the television audience on Thurday evening will dwarf that of Sunday afternoons.Sunday finals are in an induced coma, while afternoon finals are an endangered species, as night footy becomes entrenched and the grand final awaits the twilight zone.

Game definitely sold out

The incompetent Ticketek strikes again

From the AFL website:

TICKETS for week one finals at the MCG and SCG are set to go back on sale for members of competing clubs at staggered times beginning Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier on Tuesday ticket agency Ticketek, which only recently signed a new deal with the MCG and also manages ticket sales at the SCG, was forced to shut down sales after major technical issues.

Public ticket sales will now be delayed.

New timings are expected to released soon.

Optus Stadium in Perth has a different ticketing deal, with Ticketmaster, and tickets for the West Coast-Collingwood game only went on sale at 9am AWST.

Tickets for members of competing clubs originally went on sale at 9am for the three East Coast week-one finals.

Both Richmond and Hawthorn have confirmed members are experiencing problems trying to purchase tickets for Thursday week’s qualifying final.

The Hawks tweeted to confirm the game is not sold out.

We are awaiting a further update from the AFL and Ticketek.

More to come

SEN still (2:30pm) saying the AFL is trying to work out the ticketing issues and haven't yet announced when they go on sale again:

What if I purchased tickets this morning?

They are still valid.

Will I miss out now as a club member?

The club member allocation will be held and not released to the general public until after the new club member onsale.

Why are all games on sale at once?

The new times to be communicated shortly will ensure the SCG final and two MCG finals will be released at different times.

this happens every year and ticketek does nothing but say be patient

MCG can share some blame too - they've just renewed their deal with Ticketek.. They actually boasted about it a few weeks back

Two weeks to sell tickets but this mob decide to sell them all on the same day.  :pullhair :rant

You’d think that after having issues every year they would learn.

I actually blame the AFL that should of demanded the common sense of releasing tickets of matches on different days
This week Rich v Hawks - Tuesday & Wednesday club members can purchase. Thursday & Friday general public can purchase.
Next week Geelong v Melbourne - Monday & Tuesday club members. Wednesday Thursday general public.
I’m sure it’s only games at the G that are effected by the incompetence of ticketek.

It ain’t rocket science amd the AFL needs to fix this issue and maybe confer with all competing clubs on the best arrangement to satisfy the masses.

It’s not an AFL issue amazingly
MCC contract Ticketek to handle all their tickets
As Etihad hire Tickmaster
Interesting that West Coast Collingwood game handled by Tickmaster went ok
Anyhow it’s a good opportunity to give the AFL a good belting as they should of stepped in
Everyone knew this would happen to except Gil and Hocking

Took me 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Was in the queue on 3 devices. Laptop (website), Ipad (app then to website) and IPhone (app then to website).

Got to select where to sit. Selected BEST AVAILABLE, multiple times through all 3.

Then that HORRIBLE RED "Can't process your request ..." over and over ...

Then got the 3 tickets ... it is luck TO BE HONEST and I feel like I was going to miss out!

HOPE those ho missed out get one BUT RICHMOND have just sent an e-mail saying there have been ISSUES and ...

PLENTY OF TICKETS STILL REMAIN!

Give you a tip
Use only one device as the system knows you are using multiple devices and thinks it’s being scammed

Simply too many connections to the back end of the web app and now there are probably so many suspended activities from incomplete transactions. Only solution for these sorts of things is to stagger the ticket sales.

Good on you mate! Same thing here - Cat5, sitting in great southern stand behind/above tiger army @ Punt rd end.

Tried to get 4, then 3, then 2 tickets in Cat1. Then went for 4/3/2 tickets in Cat2 for M53/54 but no dice, so just went best available.

Anyway I managed to get four tickets together and I am just so happy to be going and to know my dad will be there!

Also apologies for my meltdown/bleating yesterday :D

SUMMARY

The first-ever final between the powerhouse clubs promises to be an MCG classic – and one that will shape where this September series heads. The winner advances to a preliminary final, but the loser will face a do-or-die final against Melbourne or Geelong. Reigning premier Richmond's form was shaky down the home-and-away season stretch by its lofty standards, whereas Hawthorn, other than a below-par outing against St Kilda in the penultimate round, powered home. Will the Tigers return to their best? Are the Hawks a serious threat? How will Jaeger O'Meara perform in his first final? Will Hawthorn play two ruckmen? Is there a selection surprise in store? Can Shane Edwards defy his underwhelming record against the Hawks? Only eight sleeps until we get some answers.

WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Thursday, September 6, 7.20pm AEST

WHAT HAPPENED THIS YEAR?

Round 3: Richmond 15.12 (102) d Hawthorn 13.11 (89) at the MCG

The Hawks kicked five of the last six goals to slash a game-high 39-point deficit 90 seconds into the fourth quarter to a flattering 13 by the final siren. Trent Cotchin was best afield and Jack Riewoldt slotted four goals, while Hawthorn ball magnet Tom Mitchell's 42 disposals were 11 more than anyone else.

LAST FIVE TIMES

R3, 2018, Richmond 15.12 (102) d Hawthorn 13.11 (89) at the MCG
R20, 2017, Richmond 13.15 (93) d Hawthorn 9.10 (64) at the MCG
R18, 2016, Hawthorn 16.18 (114) d Richmond 5.14 (44) at the MCG
R7, 2016, Hawthorn 21.10 (136) d Richmond 13.12 (90) at the MCG
R18, 2015, Richmond 10.11 (71) d Hawthorn 7.11 (53) at the MCG

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Richmond

1. Patrick Dangerfield has enjoyed success against the Hawks as a forward, so the Tigers may consider using Dustin Martin in the same way. Trent Cotchin, Kane Lambert and Dion Prestia are good enough to hold the midfield fort.

2. Star opposition onballers got hold of Richmond at different stages this year, and Hawk Tom Mitchell was one of those in round three, when he accumulated 42 disposals and 11 clearances. Could the Tigers go with Cotchin or Jack Graham again on Mitchell – or maybe Prestia?

3. Richmond ranks fourth in 2018 for points scored from centre bounces despite Toby Nankervis' lack of hit-outs. But the Tigers have slipped to 13th in the past month, so don't be surprised if there are some tweaks in how they set up in the middle.

Hawthorn

1. Operation: Curb Dusty. Hawks tagger Dan Howe's five-match suspension ended in round 23 and he will play limited minutes in the VFL on Saturday. Howe did a decent job on Martin in round three and will run with the Tiger again.

2. Everyone has a theory on how to beat Richmond, but the popular one is to kick more, handball less and rack up uncontested marks. Methodical ball movement is a Hawthorn trademark, so it might be the perfect storm.

3. Ben McEvoy should have the edge in the ruck over Nankervis, but will the Hawks select Jon Ceglar to try ramming home that advantage? Ceglar can be effective in attack, too, so he could help engage Richmond's star-studded defence.

THE SIX POINTS

1. The Tigers led by 39 points early in the last quarter in their clash this season before the Hawks finished strongly to reduce the final margin to 13. Jack Riewoldt booted four goals for Richmond and Jarryd Roughead kicked the same for the Hawks.

2. Richmond finished the season ranked second for scoring, inside 50s and marks inside 50, while Hawthorn ranks sixth for goals, third for inside 50s and fifth for marks inside 50.

3. The Tigers have won their last three finals, but haven't won four in a row since they achieved it between 1980 and 1982. The Hawks are aiming for their first finals triumph since the 2015 Grand Final.

4. Hawthorn places second among the 2018 finalists for September experience with a combined 265 games, led by Shaun Burgoyne's 33. Richmond comes in seventh with a total of 114 finals.

5. The Tigers finished the home and away season as the best fourth-quarter team, winning 14 of them and boasting a margin of +205 points. Hawthorn's best term was the third at +213.

6. Both teams have five players in the top 50 of the Schick AFL Player Ratings, with Dustin Martin the leading Tiger at No.2 – down one spot this week – and Ben McEvoy the top Hawk at No.13.

WHAT THE COACHES SAY

Damien Hardwick: "We had (Tom Mitchell) and Trent (Cotchin) going head to head, then we went Jack Graham at various stages. We were happy and I think Hawthorn would be the same … (Mitchell)'s a tough player to stop. He's so clean. You can tag him and he might get 30; he's just so effective, he's so good and he's so smart."

Alastair Clarkson:
"Both sides have been highly decorated sides in the competition, have very, very competitive, strong supporter bases with strong membership and it's extraordinary they haven't played against each other (in a final). But we defy history this next game, where we get an opportunity to play one another for big stakes."

IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …

Hawthorn will welcome James Sicily back from a broken wrist for his first match since round 17. The Hawks firebrand was headed for a maiden All Australian selection before that injury and is a match-winner at his best, but will the Tigers try to get under his skin? Sicily missed the clubs' earlier clash through suspension.

PREDICTION: Richmond by 15 points

Tigers-Hawks blockbuster officially a sell-out

Callum Twomey

NEXT week's qualifying final between Richmond and Hawthorn is a sell-out, after the AFL confirmed all tickets were exhausted on Thursday.

A week before the huge clash at the MCG, the League announced there are no more tickets available for the game.

It said further tickets could become available if unused club or AFL allocations open up. If so, those tickets would be released next Tuesday at 2pm AEST.

A crowd of more than 90,000 is expected as the clubs meet in a final for the first time.

Richmond narrowly defeated the Hawks by 13 points in the clubs' last meeting, in round three this season, but the Tigers have not been beaten at the MCG since round 13 last year to Sydney.

RICHMOND

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

The Tigers rank last for clearance differential but such is their set up behind the ball it does not really matter, for their ability to rebound has been a key to their dominance. They are the best side in scoring from turnovers (+23.1 points) so what they lack around stoppages they make up for from turnovers. The Bombers and Bulldogs in recent weeks had success in getting through the Tigers' defence by attacking through the corridor – something Hawthorn is likely to do because they have the required kicking skills.

Mick McGuane analyses the tactics that will decide Tigers-Hawks qualifying final

MICK McGUANE,
Herald Sun
September 3, 2018

STOPPING Dustin Martin won’t be easy but he can’t be let off the leash.

COLLINGWOOD premiership hero MICK McGUANE dissects Thursday night’s qualifying final between Richmond and Hawthorn and pinpoints where the match will be won and lost.

HOW THEY PLAY

Each team thrives on a forward-half game, with Richmond ranked second and Hawthorn third for time spent in the forward half of the ground.

Both aim to deny the opposition ball movement out of its defensive 50 by rolling up the ground, coming in behind their attack and setting up a tight 18-man defensive structure covering all exits.

When employed successfully, it builds pressure and forces turnovers, which creates scoring opportunities.

The Tigers are the best in the AFL at creating turnovers in their forward 50; the Hawks are third.

RICHMOND

THE KEY

We know the Tigers love to play a chaos-type game — a high-pressure contest. Long kicks come out of the back half and teammates in front of the ball are aware of this.

The reason they get away with it is the group has great synergy and is well connected. It’s the opposite at the other end as they rely on short kicks inside forward 50. Their forwards use and work the space available, making them dangerous and usable options.

THE THEME

It’s all about the GBH — the ground-ball Hunt. I’ve always rated this facet of the game highly. It’s a measure of a team that is proactive rather than reactive.

The Tigers get the inside/outside balance of the contest right on most occasions. It also identifies those players who are on their toes as opposed to being on their heels. That requires will, intent and effort, and most importantly.

THE CHALLENGE

Cheating or self-preservation mode? We’ll soon find out. I’ve watched the Tigers closely in the last six weeks and they appear to be rolling the dice.

It’s either cheating (running forward of the ball) or it’s a self-preservation mindset. It’s almost like they have so much faith in each other, even when they are outnumbered, they are going to win the ball.

They take risks and look to get behind the opposition’s defence. It’s a dangerous habit to form in the subconscious when the stakes are at their highest. I’m sure Dimma is all over it, or it is by design?

HAWTHORN

THE KEY

Changing lanes is paramount. They cannot play the game in straight lines. That shifts Richmond’s defence and creates opportunities for “Pop Space” (space for teammates to run on to a little pop-up kick) to channel the ball through. It encourages run from behind the ball so the Hawks can go at speed.

To create “Pop Space” in the corridor, those teammates in front of the ball on the flanks must look to get chalk on their feet and make the ground big. Selfless running will challenge the Tiger defenders who like to own the outside.

THE THEME

The Hawks’ ball movement direction is through the corridor and over. A slow, then fast build-up will complement back-space leading using Luke Breust, Paul Puopolo and Jack Gunston, who read the cues, knowing when to lengthen the ground and stretch Richmond’s press.

THE CHALLENGE

I’d implore the Hawks to attack the corridor at every opportunity out of defensive 50. They MUST back their decisions and kicking skills. Yes, it’s high risk, but it could yield a high reward.

Dare and bravery, and having faith in your feet keeps a defensive structure honest.

Geelong dared to go through the corridor of out defensive 50 against Richmond in Round 20. That mode almost proved successful, of which Clarko would be well aware.

Turnovers will occur but great teams and individuals maintain their nerve when it matters.

MAGNET BOARD

IF I WAS RICHMOND

It’s all about taking care of inside and outside the contest. Tom Mitchell has required attention all season, even if not every club has given it to him. His impact can be diluted with a tag. George Hewitt showed us how in the last round.

Jack Graham or Trent Cotchin would love the challenge around stoppage to nullify Mitchell’s influence on winning first possession. Graham can be accountable for him in general play.

Isaac Smith is the other Hawks player I’d be putting time into. He is an outside running machine. Kamdyn McIntosh is my go-to man to keep Smith in check.

IF I WAS HAWTHORN

There is no way I would allow Dustin Martin to roam free between the arcs. He gathers 35 per cent of his disposals between the defensive 50 arc and the centre circle and a more damaging 64 per cent when centre-forward. Incredibly, he has only had five disposals in defensive 50 for the year.

Please, Clarko, bring some sanity back to the game and get someone to challenge Dusty physically and mentally. Deny him time and space. Frustrate him and live in his shadow.

The Tigers like to play with five forwards rolling up — especially Kane Lambert or Shane Edwards — to give them an extra number around the ball. This provides Martin with a creative licence to float forward when he can. He’s a beast at centre-bounce clearances, so get Liam Shields to take the role between the arcs and hand over to Ben Stratton when Martin goes forward. If selected, Daniel Howe could be a Plan B.

PREDICTION

Richmond by 15 points

The Burning Questions: Richmond versus Hawthorn

By Nic Negrepontis
Sept. 3, 2018

Garry Lyon and Tim Watson have gone in-depth about the biggest unanswered questions ahead of Thursday night’s blockbuster Qualifying Final between Richmond and Hawthorn.

Starting with the Richmond side of things, here’s the questions Watson believes are hanging over the heads of the Tigers.

“They need to decide whether to bring Dan Butler back into the side for a start. Kane Lambert, is he fit and ready to go?” he told SEN Breakfast.

“There’s a couple of questions they need to ask about the composition of their side.

“If Lambert’s fit, he’s in. I’m not sure about Butler though, whether he is a walk-up start to come back into that team.

“Should they be reconsidering their back-up ruck situation?”

Lyon believes the Tigers will back in what has worked.

“I don’t think they’ll change the ruck set up because it’s held them in such good stead,” he said.

The former Melbourne captain has his own question he’d like Richmond to answer.

“I think the burning question about Richmond is the last month’s minor drop off in terms of the things so dear to them,” he said.

“Is it a cause for concern or is it just a little hiccup as they start to gather themselves for September.

“His (Damien Hardwick's) question I think he has to say is going into that last round, they didn’t play their best footy and they need to get it back for the first final and if not, there’s a problem. That’s the burning question.”

As for the Hawks, the questions surround their own ruck choices.

“Will Hawthorn play two ruckmen against Richmond?” Watson asked.

Lyon thinks they should.

“That’s the same question I’ve got, do they go in with Ben McEvoy and Jon Ceglar? I would,” he said.

“I think you’ve got to compete in your forward six in the air against the best intercept marking team in the competition.”

One of the burning questions for the Hawks according to Lyon is whether they look at what the Western Bulldogs did to the Tigers in Round 23.

“A lot of teams will try and change directions and go from one side of the ground to the other on a slow player and bring it through to the other side of the ground,” he said.

“You can get teams caught out if they’re not set up really well behind the footy. Richmond handles that okay, but shorter changes of direction and quicker changes and then go.

“Imagine the ground is in eight lanes across the ground and lane one is on the far right. So rather than go from lane one to lane eight, go to lane two, quickly to three and then go.

“So you just have different attacking avenues. I think they sort of move in a structure and all of a sudden you’ve been split down an area of your defence you’re not expecting.

“The other theory is if you’re maintaining possession, Richmond’s pressure can’t get you if you’re taking uncontested marks.

The pressure Richmond brings is taken out of the equation.”

Watson believes Hawthorn can take advantage of that very thing.

“The slow deliberate movement of Hawthorn, that’s something that they do really well,” Watson said.

“They can retain possession of the ball better than any side in the competition.”

Should both teams consider tagging roles in the midfield? Lyon doesn’t think so.

Watson: “Do you tag Dustin Martin or Trent Cotchin? Who do you go after if you’re Hawthorn?”

Lyon: “I don’t think you tag. Not the way these games are played.”

Watson: “What if you’re Richmond, do you tag Tom Mitchell?”

Lyon: “Nup. They’re the premiers. They’ve gotten by not tagging. Maybe Jack Graham, but I just reckon they’ll back their own midfield in.”

Footy Classified's match discussion tonight:

Rich-mond, Poor-mond

                       Rd21-GF,2017   R1-16,2018   R17-23,2018
Points For             107.5              97.4               97.4
Points Against         63.2              70.7               73.4
Pressure                 198               182                175
Tackles                   76.0             63.6                57.9

Lloyd said he isn't worried by our late season drop off in pressure and tackle numbers as he remembers for him back in 2000 it was hard to keep your motivation to its highest level when you knew you were going to finish on top of the ladder.

What is Clarko's plan?

Lloyd and Judd said Hawthorn will try to slow the game down, keep possession via precise short kicks and turn the match in a in-close grind. Apparently the Hawks are 13-1 when opposition scores are kept <76 pts.

Who will play on Dusty?

They reckon Shiels will get the job.

Astbury on the game itself:

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson said last week the key to beating the Tigers was to deny their defenders the chance to mark the ball and quickly rebound, and instead try and bring it to ground.

Astbury said they were ready to match it with the Hawks on the deck if that was their tactic.

"If you focus too much on what they're trying to do, you'll probably just shoot yourself in the foot," he said.

"Obviously they've got great speed in their forward half and bringing the ball to ground is their strength.

"He said that us marking the ball back against them is something they're going to have to try and manage, but we think we've got good players to combat their speed at ground level should the ball be there as well, so we're ready."

The Tigers haven't been dominant in the weeks leading into the finals, but Astbury said that could end up being a positive as it ensured they had faced different challenges each week.

He also said it meant they hadn't been able to rest in a "position of comfort" in the past month.

"I think it's a blessing – we got a good look at different systems and how they're going to challenge us," he said.

"We've trained it and we'll continue to train it.

"Hawthorn will have looked at our last few games and looked for opportunities to unsettle us, and we think we'll be well prepared for that."

Title: To tag or not to tag Tom Mitchell? Dimma's dilemma (ESPN)
Post by: one-eyed on September 04, 2018, 02:59:30 PM
Do we tag Tom Mitchell and if so who should get the gig?

------------------------------------------------------------

To tag or not to tag? Dimma's dilemma

ESPN
4 Sept. 2018

If there's one team in the competition that can probably get away with not tagging Hawthorn's Tom Mitchell, it's Richmond.

The reigning premiers have been a class above everyone else this season en route to the minor premiership and a qualifying final win over the Hawks on Thursday night would have them as a short priced favourite to return to the AFL's big dance for the second straight year.

Richmond prevailed over Hawthorn earlier in the year by 11 points at the MCG a game where Mitchell could pick up the three Brownlow Medal votes for 42 possessions, 11 clearances and a goal. He was also the Hawks' best player when the sides met in Round 20 last year with a 35-disposal, nine-clearance and one-goal game.

Okay, we know what you're thinking - why tag Mitchell if the Tigers can win without doing so?

But in a final when scoring dries up and the game becomes ultra-contested, Mitchell -- the winner of the 2018 Leigh Matthews trophy -- could be the decisive factor.

In his last finals series (2016 with Sydney), Mitchell was just about the Swans' most consistent player. He averaged 27 possessions and 4.5 clearances per game (when he spent significantly less time in the midfield). Not to mention he was the favourite for the Norm Smith Medal at halftime in the 2016 grand final after picking up 15 possessions, laying eight tackles and booting two goals.

A Mitchell masterclass doesn't always equate to a Hawthorn win but in a final it just might. Don't say we didn't warn you, Dimma.

Can Richmond stuff a switch?

The Tigers' winning margin in three of their past four home-and-away games was no more than eight points, with late misses by the opposition being the difference between a win and loss in two of those matches. Given a top-two spot was virtually secured for most of the final month, it raises the question: were Richmond coming back to the field or did they just do enough in the run home? It's picking faults to suggest anything other than the latter, with all three games in hand before the opposition made late charges. Apart from Dan Butler, the Tigers are at full-strength and are capable of turning up the heat to maximum against the hardened Hawks. They dominate the competition when it comes to scores from turnovers, and should do so again.

Does Alastair Clarkson have a trick up his sleeve?

The four-time premiership coach generally makes his moves at training rather than rely on match-day moments of inspiration. However, he may need to dig deep to find a tonic to quell the manic Tigers. Hawthorn can realistically aim to win the centre clearances, so the next possession is vital, because Richmond's defenders are so good at intercepting and rebounding to a midfield that holds their position. Clarkson might be tempted to play James Sicily inside the forward 50 if he wants to use a shock tactic to keep the Tigers occupied in the air. However, he is more likely to want him in defence to keep the ball off the ground. He could also push Ben McEvoy forward to occupy Alex Rance, with Jonathon Ceglar handling Toby Nankervis. Such moves might create a goal or two, but it's more likely Hawthorn will try to control possession and deny Richmond the chance to engage in a frenetic fight for ground balls that they inevitably win, their scoring efficiency once inside 50 being the second best in the competition.

Will James Frawley and Jack Riewoldt finally have the battle they were destined for?

When Richmond met Melbourne at the start of these two players' careers, there was much discussion about the match-up becoming a Glen Jakovich-Wayne Carey duel for the modern generation. However, it didn't eventuate, with Frawley having to leave Melbourne for Hawthorn to experience finals success, while Riewoldt plugged away without team success until the stars aligned last year. Now, finally, the two players meet in a final with just months remaining before they turn 30. Restricting Riewoldt nowadays is almost impossible because he doesn't rely on goals for influence, but if Frawley can create enough uncertainty to enable marking talls to outmark Riewoldt, the Tigers' small forwards will be starved of opportunity.

Do Hawthorn become unsociable with Dusty?

The Richmond champion has been timing his run of form perfectly, shaking off early-season expectations that weighed him down, to turn it on late. Few have dared to niggle Dustin Martin constantly, afraid it might just focus his energies in an even more dangerous and destructive manner. But no one knows for sure how he might react. This time last season, it was impossible to tackle Martin, let alone put him off his game, but a brave Hawk might take on the challenge to test him. If Daniel Howe plays (named as an emergency), he might get the job, while Ben Stratton will hope his mullet carries the powers of Samson if he chooses to antagonise Martin. Do so at your own risk, Hawks, but any such battle will make for great watching.

Final word

It's hard to shake the feeling that Richmond have been cruising and Hawthorn can't believe they finished fourth. The gap between the two teams seems wide, with three wins and 16 per cent separating them on the ladder. Richmond's midfield, led by Trent Cotchin, runs too deep and they should comfortably record their 22nd consecutive win at the MCG.

Prediction: Richmond by 28 points

Shane Crawford questions Richmond’s training intensity

Hawthorn great Shane Crawford has questioned Richmond’s training intensity ahead of tonight’s qualifying final against the Hawks.

Crawford said his training spies had told him the Tigers were taking it easy on the track and not pushing themselves too hard.

“I’ve been told it’s sort of a feel-good session … kick the ball around, not too much competitive stuff, move the ball around and feel good about it,” Crawford said on SEN Breakfast.

Crawford said that though the Tigers skills may have looked slick on the training field, it wasn’t necessarily the best preparation for a final.

“A great training session is when you’re still making mistakes because the pressure and the competition, which is your teammates, is making it very much game-style.”

“Then you have sessions where there is no competition, like the old circle work – everyone touches the ball but it makes very little difference to what you’re actually trying to do.”

The Tigers take on Hawthorn in tonight’s qualifying final at the MCG.

Tigers v Hawks: The tactical battle

Ben Guthrie
afl.com.au
Sep 6, 2018 1:15PM

BY ITS OWN admission, Richmond did not play its best football over the last month of the home and away season.

However, the minor premier was the benchmark side across the year for a reason and Hawthorn and its coach Alastair Clarkson have their work cut out if they want to cause an upset.

Richmond finished three games ahead of Hawthorn at the end of round 23 and beat the Hawks by 13 points in the teams' only meeting, in round three.

The Tigers led virtually all day, extending their advantage to a game-high 39 points early in the last quarter before Hawthorn closed to within 14 points with just under three minutes left.

What the Hawks cannot do is bomb the ball forward aimlessly and allow Alex Rance and Nick Vlastuin – like they did when the teams squared off in that game – to pick off high kicks going inside 50.

Instead, the Hawks must be patient with their ball movement, but pick the right moments to take calculated risks and centre the footy to create one-on-one contests forward of the ball.

AFL.com.au has taken a look at how Richmond and Hawthorn structure up ahead of Thursday night's qualifying final clash at the MCG.

Richmond

How they play

The Tigers are an elite pressure side and their modus operandi is to force the ball forward into their attacking half of the ground and keep it there. Richmond forces the opposition into turnovers, with the Tigers outscoring their rivals by an average of 23 points per game (ranked No.1 in the competition) in that area of the contest.

Attack

Ranked behind only Melbourne for points per game (97.4) in 2018, Richmond's spread of scoring options points to how dangerous it can be. Coleman medallist Jack Riewoldt booted 65 goals for the season, while also ranking 12th in the AFL for goal assists. Shane Edwards (2nd) and Dustin Martin (eq. 5th) also thrive in dishing the ball off to teammates. The Tigers had four players kick more than 20 goals for the season (Riewoldt, Josh Caddy, Dustin Martin and Jason Castagna).

Defence

All Australian Alex Rance is the general in defence and often acts as the 'goalkeeper' or anchor, where he sits out the back of the contest and directs his teammates' positioning. Alternatively, he comes up at the ball to impact ground-level or aerial contests. With Rance's offsiders David Astbury and Dylan Grimes able to lock down on an opponent, the Tigers' defence would be close to the most organised in the League.

Ball movement

Richmond is not a high-possession team and instead relies on a direct brand of football, characterised by forward handballs to teammates and knock-ons to advantage. The pressure of their small forwards and midfielders around the ball is crucial and they sweat on the opposition making a mistake. First-year forward Jack Higgins has generated 80 points from turnovers caused by his pressure, ranked fourth in the competition.

How to beat them

All four of the Tigers' losses this season have come on the road: against Adelaide (round two), West Coast (round nine), Port Adelaide (round 12) and Greater Western Sydney (round 17). Meanwhile, they have won 21 successive games at the MCG. However, Geelong and the Western Bulldogs showed late in the season that Richmond are fallible and provided opposition teams with an example of how to beat the reigning premier, although they narrowly failed themselves. The Cats and Dogs attacked the corridor and tried to move the ball with pace, pulling the trigger on 'inside 45 kicks' (centralised kicks on a 45-degree angle back inboard) and being prepared to kick to contests in the middle of the ground. The Tigers are reliant on winning the ball back from sides by creating pressure around the ball, so if teams exit stoppages with speed and not allow their stable defence to setup effectively in transition they can be vulnerable in one-out contests.

Hawthorn

How they play

The Hawks like to control the tempo of the game by possessing the ball and wearing the opposition out by piling up uncontested mark, forcing them to defend and win the ball back. Hawthorn has improved its ability to score from stoppages in the second half of this season and Alastair Clarkson's side is highly efficient when they get the ball inside attacking 50.

Attack

The Hawks rank third in the AFL for points per game from turnovers, punishing teams when they make mistakes. They have improved their ability to move the ball out of a stoppage and once they get the ball forward they have damaging players, led by All Australians Luke Breust and Jack Gunston inside 50.

Defence

The Hawks allowed their opposition to go from defensive 50 to inside 50 just 14 per cent of the time – the lowest percentage Champion Data has ever recorded. They are organised behind the ball, often creating a structure where they play with seven or eight defenders and outnumber the opposition. Ben Stratton is Hawthorn's most flexible backman – he can play as a drop-off defender, he can play tall or small and he often lines up on the opposition’s most dangerous player inside forward 50.

Ball movement

The Hawks refer to 'keeping the ball in motion' and constantly stuff the ball around to keep the opposition on their toes. They move the ball with precision, honouring hit-up leads and if that option is not on Ben McEvoy and Jon Ceglar are excellent bail-out options to kick the footy to up the line. They use their control of the ball as a form of defence.

How to beat them

Stopping Tom Mitchell is a good start, with the Brownlow Medal favourite often the catalyst for winning a crucial clearance or a ground ball at the bottom of a pack. And if the Hawks are able to feed the ball back cleanly to teammates out of a contest, they can then set the field up the way they like. Denying them space and pressuring the ball carrier is crucial against Hawthorn.

Looks like Crawf was stupidly basing what he said on our day-before open training session which is always short (no more than an hour) and light-hearted in front of supporters. It's more about having a run and kick around to keep the body loose and fresh for the match the following day.

Clarkson said post-game all the media talk about him coming up with a special plan to beat us haven't been watching him coach for the past 14 years. He's a system based coach and the best teams over the years are coached this way.

They know how we play but the trick is trying to break us down. They couldn't do that.

Believed the conditions suited us more tonight. Said we were able to get "grubby goals". Not a knock as it doesn't matter how you kick goals. We played the 'knock ons' and 'soccers' better than they did. Did say we're clearly the best side in the comp: wet or dry. We've played that way for a long while now and and that they use to be like us and are now trying to get back to that.

Every Tiger rated from the first qualifying final

Jennifer Phelan

Dustin Martin – 9

Celebrated his 200th game with a mixed bag of pure Dusty brilliance. Had seven touches in the first quarter but was frustrated by the close checking of Daniel Howe, which sent him deep into attack. Went back into the middle for the start of the second and won the first clearance, before kicking a ridiculous goal when he was running full-pelt towards the boundary. Won the battle with Howe in the end and finished the game with 29 disposals and 10 clearances.

Trent Cotchin – 8
Put aside any concern of soreness with a typically tough, in-and-under, wet weather game. Set the scene with five first-quarter tackles and broke even in an enthralling battle with Mitchell at the stoppages. Wasn't flashy with his 26 disposals but brought plenty of pressure and did all the tough stuff that makes him an inspirational leader.

Dylan Grimes – 8
Just got it done. Sacrificed his own game as usual in a dual with Paul Puopolo where he didn't concede a goal, nor did he give an inch. His spoiling was first-rate with a highlight coming in the third quarter where he marked against Puopolo just after a Hawthorn goal to save another.

Kane Lambert – 8
Signalled his return after last playing in round 21 with two excellent first-half tackles and helped to curtail the influence of Isaac Smith after quarter-time when it looked like the Hawks winger was going to get off the chain. Had 26 disposals, 17 contested, and was impressive moving the ball inside 50.

Dion Prestia – 8

Looked on the cusp of blowing the game apart all night and nearly did with 11 touches in the first half, which he followed up with 11 in the third term alone. Unloaded a huge goal from outside 50 off two steps in the third quarter to open up a 22-point lead. Had eight score involvements and 24 pressure acts to go with his 626m gained, which was the most on the field.

Daniel Rioli – 8
Perfect night for the silky, small forward. Kicked three goals, brought plenty of trademark forward pressure and won a stack of contested ball in a clean performance. Had a nice battle with Shaun Burgoyne where they took turns tackling each other and bounced back up after being barrelled by Puopolo early in the fourth quarter. Is built for September.

David Astbury – 7
Spent most of his time opposed to Jarryd Roughead, who ended with three goals but only one against Astbury. It was the only goal the defender conceded as he played his role well despite the greasy conditions.

Josh Caddy – 7
Came out on top in a fiery battle with Hawks livewire James Sicily. Kicked 2.2 and took six marks, pushing up and down the ground to provide a leading target that was hard to contain. Had an untidy moment when he used his legs to hold Daniel Howe in a headlock behind play in the first half.

Shaun Grigg – 7

Had 25 touches and took the ball inside 50 nine times, but it was his pressure that set the Tigers' back-up tall guy apart from the Hawks' big pair of Ben McEvoy and Jon Ceglar. Was also clean with the ball and got it moving, which was important given the contested nature of the game.

Jack Higgins – 7
Wasn't overawed by his first final in the slightest, and even got to celebrate with a "snag" late in the third, which he kicked as he was falling to the ground. Other highlights included a full-body smother on a Blake Hardwick kick in the first minute of the second quarter, and when he showed great vision to hit Caddy on the lead in the fourth to set up a goal after roving the ball off Riewoldt's hands.

Kamdyn McIntosh – 7

Would have had many punters throwing down their betting stumps in disgust when he was the unlikely first goal kicker. Added another two to his tally for a career-high bag of three. On a night where uncontested possessions were hard to find, was the most effective winger when he did get it.

Alex Rance – 7
Was loose at times but mainly shared Roughead with Astbury. Wasn't his most prolific game but was good on the rebound. Will be concerned about two things as he drives home; a potential eye-gouge on Paul Puopolo as the two wrestled on the ground in the second quarter, and how his left ankle feels after he gave it a good tweak late in the third quarter.

Jayden Short – 7
Won plenty of ball running out of defence. Was second to Prestia for metres gained on the field (537m) and clean with his disposals despite the on-again, off-again rain. Like Higgins, wasn't freaked out by the prospect of his first final and just got the job done.

Nick Vlastuin – 7
Was impassable and annoying across half-back. Possessions were down on his season average, but his spoiling was impressive as he constantly got a fist to anything the Hawks tried to attack with and was a nuisance to Luke Breust and Conor Nash. Marshalled across half-back and pushed up the ground at times in a solid performance.

Jason Castagna – 6

Looked primed for a big game early on with a lively first quarter where he gathered eight disposals and chipped in with two scoring assists. But, while he ended with seven tackles – the majority of which were inside 50 – and 20 pressure acts, his best was in the first term as he didn't touch the ball again, mainly opposed to Ryan Burton.

Reece Conca – 6
Played in the middle and on the wing, which was a bit of a surprise with the return of Lambert at the expense of half-back Ellis. Had a go at Tom Mitchell but couldn't curtail the ball magnet for the time he had him, and while his 17 touches weren't the Tigers' biggest haul, he was second in the team for pressure acts and laid six tackles.

Shane Edwards – 6
Started forward against Ben Stratton but had a variety of opponents on his way to 15 touches. Did a bit of everything; had an explosive highlight in the third when he belted through traffic and drove the ball long to Prestia, who went inside 50 and set up a scoring opportunity. Spent most of his time forward and had some classy moments.

Bachar Houli – 6
Played mainly against young Hawk James Worpel in a relatively even battle. Had 24 disposals, mainly off half-back, but also pushed up the ground to win the ball on the wing and drive it inside 50. Didn't star but played his role.

Toby Nankervis – 6
Handled himself well when pitted against two big rucks on a night where the conditions didn't lend themselves to height. Took an important mark in defence in the second quarter and had more disposals around the ground than either of the Hawks' big men.

Jack Riewoldt – 6

The conditions were less than ideal for the Tigers' lone big forward and he only touched the ball twice in the first quarter, although he made one count when he took a leading mark, played on, and set up a Rioli crumbed goal. Was mainly opposed to James Frawley in a pretty even battle. Will enjoy a week off now after coming off briefly with a knocked calf in the fourth quarter.

Jack Graham – 5

Despite his ability to tag, didn't spend much time against Mitchell. Struggled to get going after a one-touch first quarter, although he did kick a goal late in the fourth quarter. Had seven disposals – his lowest since round 10 – but did kick in with 24 pressure acts and seven tackles.

Nathan Broad – 3
Wasn't his best game and might be nervous with former housemate and fellow defender Brandon Ellis omitted for Kane Lambert. Only had three disposals after failing to touch the ball at all in the first quarter and had just seven pressure acts; the second lowest of any Tiger. Won't like the replay of an unconvincing marking attempt in the third quarter where he braced for non-existent contact mid-air and dropped the ball.

The numbers behind Richmond's big finals win over Hawthorn

By SEN
7 Sept. 2018

Garry Lyon has revealed some of the key numbers behind Richmond’s 31-point Qualifying Final win over Hawthorn last night.

“The third quarter when they separated themselves, the territory was all in Richmond’s half of the ground and that’s their style,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“The third quarter, 22-9 inside 50s, time in the forward half was 63 percent to 37, their forward half intercepts were 15-7, they kicked 5.6 for the quarter and 5.5 of them came from their forward half chains. They had 45 forward half turnovers.

“It got in there and they didn’t let it out and they scored. This is what Richmond are.”

Daisy Pearce says the victory highlighted how you need to try and match the Tigers’ game style if you want to beat them.

“You can’t beat Richmond by just trying to resist what they’re good at,” Pearce said.

“You have to try match what they’re good at but that can’t be it.

“You think of all the things Hawthorn tried to do to beat them, they brought amazing pressure and the heat was on really early, they tried to avoid dump kicking to Richmond’s intercepting marking defenders.

“There was nothing that really threatened the Tigers, it was just about, how do not fall into the trap of the Tigers?”

Why?

Thursday night is a stupid timeslot, driven by TV

It is not family friendly, crap for people who work and have early starts  :banghead :banghead

Would think the game that is going to get the biggest crowd would be primetime on Friday
Sounds like you did care about the scheduling after all??

I don't see the need for any games on Thursday nights at any point in the season

I understand your point about Thursday night footy but I bet you watch it when it’s on.
It’s about getting more exposure for the AFL and it’s about money. It’s a business and any business with the opportunity for more exposure, more money and more grouth will do it.
I agree Thursday nights are a pain if your team is playing but if they are not, it’s another night of footy we all get to watch on TV.

The other time slot that isn’t really family friendly is the Sunday 3:20 game as by the time some get home it’s late and with work and school the next day. But who doesn’t like to sit down Sunday afternoon/evening and watch more footy??
Believe it or not it’s about money and exposure.

It’s nothing new and it’s not going away even if people have to work the next day.

Some startling stats from last Thursday:

We forced the most forward half turnovers for the year; 27 ground ball wins I50 which delivered 9 goals; & we didn’t take a CM I50.

Hawks brought it out of D50 on 43 occasions & made it I50 just 6 of those times.

Unreal.

But here are the actual facts   :shh
