AFL Round 21
RICHMOND vs Carlton
Sunday, 11th August @ the M.C.G.
Start time: 3:20 pm

Just need to copy the Eagles. Withstand the early enthusiasm, protect the corridor and contain Carlton's (especially Cripps) clearances from the stoppages. Then exploit the Blues' weakness at ground level in their backline and on transition with our speed (both ball movement & leg speed). West Coast's small forwards had a field day.

8 point game!

Geez would have thought, weather permitting, given Carlton’s resurgence and crowd figures lately that there’d be closer to 70k.
-
Richmond by 62 points

The AFL website is tipping us to win by over 6 goals.

Match preview: Richmond v Carlton
AFL.com.au
Sarah Black
Aug 6, 2019
Where and when: MCG, Sunday August 11, 3.20pm AEST
What it means for Richmond: The quest for a top-four spot continues. With tough games against West Coast and Brisbane to come, banking points against Carlton is vital. A win over the old enemy is an added bonus.
What it means for Carlton: After an exciting three weeks, the Blues crashed down to earth against West Coast. Another win could push Carlton up a ladder position, lessening the impact of losing that first-round pick to Adelaide.
The match-up: Jack Riewoldt v Jacob Weitering
The two have had their fair share of battles over the past few years. Weitering, the Blues' second highest rating defender in the AFL Player Ratings, held Riewoldt (ranked 50th overall) to just 1.1 when the pair last met in round one.
It’s a big week for: Richmond's ruck stocks
Does Toby Nankervis make his long-awaited return from an adductor injury, after spending three weeks regaining touch in the VFL? Or does Ivan Soldo's strong performances since round nine hold him out? Mabior Chol's versatility sees him likely to hold onto the second ruck role.
Big call: Tom Lynch is hitting full steam ahead of his first finals series and will kick a bag of five goals.
Prediction: Tigers by 38 points

Richmond by 62 points
I like your thinking. Nothing better than a 10 goal win against the cheats to start your week. :clapping
-
The view of us and the upcoming game from the opposition:
------------------------
The Blues outrank the Tigers in the clearance stakes, ranked third compared to their opposition in 18th.
However, Richmond well and truly makes up the ground in defence, outranking the Blues in one percenters through the likes of Dylan Grimes and Nick Vlastuin.
In recent weeks, the Blues have shown their ability to win contested ball against their opponents: this’ll be another area where they’ll back themselves in against the Tigers.
Despite its marquee talls in attack, Richmond’s small forward brigade has been a key in their recent period of success.
So how will Carlton’s very own Michael Gibbons stack up against premiership Tiger Daniel Rioli? We’ll soon find out as either side battle it out for the four points.

Having won their past six games, the Tigers are well-placed to secure a top-four finish.
Coach Damien Hardwick said Teague's decision to put Marc Murphy and Ed Curnow on the ball had transformed the way the Blues played.
"They're playing a lot more adventurous, I would say," Hardwick said.
"They're scoring a lot better off turnover. That's the challenge for us, to deny their turnover scores and deny their ball movement.
"That's become a little bit more aggressive and more assertive but a lot of it's linked through the experience they've put back through the midfield."

Yep. Last week against the Eagles, the Blues were very good for a quarter and a half. On top for significant parts of that period before the Eagles overpowered and outclassed them. As you say Slipper, we need to be on from the start, nullify the clearances and bring the pressure so we can exploit their weaknesses in defence especially at ground level.
-
Sheds has started well.
Direct footy in the wet Tiges.
Shocking shank by Rioli.
-
Dumb kick Ross in this weather. Gift to Carlton :banghead. Lucky this missed.
-
It's not going to be one of these days where we can't kick straight :banghead.
Lynch misses badly.
1-1
-
Ross stood up in the tackle :huh.
-
Can we stop with the overuse of the handball in the wet :scream.
-
Geez we're playing dumb footy in the wet.
-
Great kick from Graham to Jack's advantage. That's better. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 1.1-7
Carl 0.1-1
-
Ah George. Aim for the inside of the left post with the banana.
8 - 1
-
Lambert smartly kicks to space where Short runs onto it. Kicks long to Lynch out of the back. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 2.2-14
Carl 0.1-1
-
Too cute Stack.
-
Sheds again. To Houli to Caddy who spots up Lynch 35 out. Shanks it again OOTF :P.
-
How's that not HTB against Curnow?
-
How's that not HTB against Curnow?
Because he should have got a free kick for in the back ?? Was blatant
-
Great stuff Tiges :clapping. Graham goal with just seconds to go :gotigers.
20 - 2
-
Quarter time
Richmond 3.2-20
Carlton 0.2-2
Goals: Riewoldt, Lynch, Graham.
-
How's that not HTB against Curnow?
Because he should have got a free kick for in the back ?? Was blatant
He had prior opportunity first though. Grimes got him twice.
-
Graham looking more like the 2017 version :cheers
-
We look much more cleaner and dangerous moving the ball by foot. Keep the handballs to what's necessary in the wet.
Sheds is on today. Clean possessions and marks like it's a dry day.
Nank and Chol doing well in the ruck. We've nullified them in the contests so far. Prestia getting a few clean clearances.
-
Ah Jack. Inside of the far post.
21 - 2
-
How's that not HTB against Curnow?
Because he should have got a free kick for in the back ?? Was blatant
He had prior opportunity first though. Grimes got him twice.
So you can just push someone square in the back because they had prior? Must be a new rule
If it was the other way round you would be arguing the other way
Reckon we had a good run that quarter
-
Ellis gets the lucky deliberate call. Goes long. Off the contest Graham goals standing up in the tackle :gotigers.
Graham having a game and a half.
Rich 4.2-26
Carl 0.2-2
-
Brilliant Graham

Unless we're talking about difference incidents, when did Grimes push Curnow in the back? He dragged him down by the jumper with the first tackle and then ran him down with the second. Are you arguing Grimes fell in Curnow's back in the second tackle?
-
Dumb overuse of the handball instead of just kicking it forward for territory :banghead.
Lucky Thomas misses.
27 - 4
-
Short you just rush those through.
-
Watch it again at half time MT
First contest he pushes him in the middle of the back
Been a free kick for 100 years and still is
-
Top coast to coast transition Tiges :clapping.
Graham gets another :gotigers
Rich 5.3-33
Carl 0.4-4
-
4 to Graham :clapping :gotigers
Rich 6.3-39
Carl 0.4-4

:facepalm.
We gifted them another chances in the last two minutes :banghead.
-
Prestia long bomb from 50 is a point.
40 - 12
-
Half-time
Richmond 3.2 6.4-40
Carlton 0.2 1.6-12
Goals: Graham 4, Riewoldt, Lynch.

Got to keep going now no letting them in and take our chances.
-
Got to keep going now no letting them in and take our chances.
Yep, no third quarter lapse. Typical us will let them kick the first couple.
-
Yep no doubt don't want to give them a sniff. Stack and Chol need to lift.
-
Stack is a bit off today.
-
Bad Blues turnover. Sheds intercepts and kicks a great long goal :gotigers
Rich 7.4-46
Carl 1.6-12
-
Lynch from 55 and it's rushed.
47 - 12
-
Stack needs to be dropped. He's trying to be too flashy.
Needs a message sent
-
Soldo a better option than Mabs
-
Just rush it through, dopies! :banghead :banghead
Short panics and kicks it short and blind back to Carlton who get a goal :banghead
47 - 24
-
Worst quarter of the year right here. 47-24
Forward line a rabble
-
Boy did we need that one just to get some sanity back.
Jack's tackle forces the turnover. Ellis to Lynch 35 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 8.5-53
Carl 3.6-24
-
Shocking decision against Prestia. Clearly in the back first
-
Lynch wins the HTB free. Misses though.
54 - 30
-
Half the side is half asleep :banghead.
-
Just 9 marks to us this quarter (Carlton 21).
-
Cue in the rack again. Drives me insane. I hate them so much...
-
Just get away with a win if possible here. We were horrible that quarter.
Forward line disgraceful
-
3/4 time
Richmond 3.2 6.4 8.6-54
Carlton 0.2 1.6 4.6-30
Goals: Graham 4, Lynch 2, Riewoldt
Played that quarter like we had already won the game. No control of the game for most of it. Little intensity, no run, no awareness, too cute crap and dysfunctional in the forward half.
Dimma needs to give them a rocket in the huddle.
-
Im disappointed in that we dont have a killer instinct it seems. We need percentage but our players dont seem to understand. Its been an ordinary performance today.
-
On watching on TV but it looked like Dimma blasted them. Pretty fired up.
-
Chol is not there yet. Needs to go back.
Worst game from Stack since he come in.
Containa being stupid again.
Ellis. Let hope he does his usual thing and shows something n the last.
I think you get the point that I didn't enjoy that quarter.
-
The umps have certainly swung Carlton's way in the second half ::).
-
To cute at times in the wet and doing basics wrong at times. We kept them in the game disapointing we can't put sides to the sword.
-
There is no run from us outta defence and umps murdering us. Danger close
-
How many times today have we had chances to rush it through yet we keep it in and give Carlton another shot at goal :banghead.
-
If being a flog got you Brownlow votes, Daisy Thomas would be the perpetual favourite!
-
Hello rain my old friend! ;D
Murphy pinged for deliberate. Ross puts it to the top of the square where Jack takes the mark. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 9.6-60
Carl 4.7-31
-
Lynch snap and point.
61 - 32
-
Dumb time and conditions to lose your head, Bolts.
-
It's almost like we're trying to give this up
-
Our 'X-factor' guys like Bolts and Stack hopefully will learn to play the % in these conditions next time. Hard to dodge and weave in the wet. Just get rid of it forward.
-
That was a mark wasn't it to Astbury?
Commonsense umpiring would have been to call a ball-up if he called it touched.
-
Hardwick should be absolutely ropable with the effort out there today.
-
Old Jacky boy and a bunch of others have been putrid today.
-
Reiwoldt been flogged by Jones today
-
Handball again :banghead
-
Short passes inside 50 in the wet that miss their target :banghead.
-
Can't understand why so many panic merchants out there steady and calm that's all needed instead were playing dumb and lazy footy.
-
Dimma will give them a rocket big-time. :banghead
-
Floss gets his head nearly ripped off and no free ::).
-
Hooray! We've finally sealed it. Caddy goal :gotigers.
Rich 10.7-67
Carl 6.9-45
-
Reckon George marked that after the siren :whistle. But the rule is the game ends when the ump blows his whistle.
Won by 28 pts in the end. Take the win and move on knowing we need to lift and won't get away with that poor second half in the upcoming six weeks.
-
Final Score
Richmond 3.2 6.4 8.6 11.7-73
Carlton 0.2 1.6 4.6 6.9-45
Goals: Graham 4, Lynch 2, Riewoldt 2, Caddy, Edwards, Castagna.
-

Commonsense umpiring would have been to call a ball-up if he called it touched.
Common sense applies to any other team other than Tigers. Marked the ball and then immediately tackled, where was prior opportunity?
-
Grimes had touched the ball on the way through. It wasnt a mark. Should have been a ball up.
-

Astbury shouldn't have dropped it. That was why he was pinged. He should have just held onto the ball and hoped for a ball-up.
-
Still an absolute rubbish call. Man why couldn’t we crush Carlton by 10 goals? Happy with the win. Will benefit from cotch and Martin returning next week
-
Agree, Astbury should have grappled McGovern and gone to ground, ball up.
Castagna goal was wrong but I'm ok with that.
-
Those type of mark / no mark scenarios usually get pulled up freshly quickly by decent umpires so the player isn’t penalised for being jumped immediately. Not in this case, the longer the play was allowed to unfold the more he was always going to get pinged.

-
Need to lift tho won't get away with that in second half next 2 weeks.Got lazy at times, didn't keep it simple to cute and played like the match was over. Get it quicker into our forward line to many handballs etc.A few would want to be better or else may be back in vfl.
-
Missed an opportunity to lift percentage above Collingwood which may be crucial

I know it was wet and slippery but a rubbish game all round. I find footy mostly tedious and today’s game was a prime example of how far backwards footy has gone comparing it to what I consider the best era of footy which was the 90’s.
This weeks footy has been atrocious actually.
-
Didn't seem be on for most of the second half
We did do without dusty and cotch
Will have to lift next weekend

He was wrapped up for an eternity. Should have been a ball up prior to that. On other occasions umpires call an immediate ball up when in the same situation.
Edit: fixed quoting. OE.
-
Watched the game on TV. Crap game, no other way to describe it.
4 points and no injuries, while giving Martin a rest, I'll take that, but...………
Short on notice. Thought he was pretty poor today in conditions that I would have thought suited him more than most.
-
Was I the only one that laughed a sigh of relief when Caddy kicked a goal from 2m out?
-
Grimes clearly touched the ball before Astbury caught it and Astbury was an idiot for not taking the tackle and then trying to dispose of the ball..... :shh
-
Astbury was tackled before he had it, and even though he did the right thing by beating McGovern for position, was wrapped up and held it in like he should have for a long time. A slow motion replay showed a touch but pretty disgraceful decision to pay that free kick in that moment, in the wet when they hadn't been paying them all day. If McGovern took the ball in the same situation it never would have been paid (if they didn't cheat and pay the mark). Felt like a genuine evener-uperer.
-
Second half was dire stuff.
Edwards, Graham, Prestia and Vlastuin a class above the rest.
All our small fwds were poor/avg but can’t help but think it was somewhat down to our falls not bring the ball to ground enough.
Is it me or does Liam Jones always do the job on Jack? Weitering was also decent on lynch but he was let off the hook with some dropped marks and sprayed shots from Tom.

Rubbish - he needed to stop dead and/or drop at the knees and just cop the tackle... instead he tried to break free and dispose of the ball - dumb, low-percentage play that got what it deserved... :shh

^^^^this..
It was dropping the ball, holding the ball or incorrect disposal
Take the ball, not move and it's a stoppage try and take 5 paces and you've had prior..
Silly stuff
