On social media.
No tributes.
Jack’s unfollowed him.
Something in this?
-
Perhaps someone close to him has insisted he pull the pin?
Not sure this is a finished story...

Jack's unfollowed him where? He's still following him on Instagram. Looks like nobody is following him on Twitter
-
The vice-captain retiring at 30, with 2 years left on his contract, in December and when the team is the best in the comp probably hasn't gone down too well.
-
Its not a very Richmond man thing to do

Neither is trying to play on when your heart is elsewhere

Well his team mates aren’t exactly singing his praises for following his heart...

No special praises at all, not even one from what i have seen

It is what it is
Not sure why people can't just accept it and move on
Looking for things that aren't there. Why? Because it is easier to accept?

Agree 100%
Time for everyone to move on now. Footy is just Footy and Alex has called time. His life and his choice. Im hoping Noah Balta can ve our next Alex Rance.

Bit like the chopsticks episode. Let's be honest here, you wouldn't have a clue and neither would we. If someone wants to question it like you did, why can't they.

It IS what it is which is why I’m asking the question.
Why wouldn’t his teammates pay tribute to his career - even Adam Trololol called him the GOAT.
Just seems a little odd is all...
-
I thought some of Gale's words were very interesting and empty.
Feeling I get is that the club isn't happy - maybe about the timing of the retirement, the nature of it etc. He's fit, contracted, club in the premiership window etc.
Huge assumption but it wouldn't surprise me if Rance had asked for 6-12 months off during his contract and been denied so he retired.
-

Argh... good ole chopsticks. Not sure of the relevance but I'll humour you any way. Seems People love bringing this up and accuse me saying things I didn't say. And BTW I have no idea what you mean by "wants to question like you did" so whatever
As for your you "wouldn't have clue" comment I'll let that one slide through to keeper ..again whatever ::)

Sorry but I really can't answer would like to but I can't because as it just been pointed out to me I am clueless
-
So my theory which is a pure guess is Rance’s retirement isn’t 100% set in stone yet. And they’re giving him time to mull it over. Kind of like Hodge’s retirement from hawthorn. Well that’s what I’m praying for anyway
-
For me timing was odd should have been done before trade period or list lodgement.
-
I'm hoping he retires and comes back after the bye
-
I don’t have a theory but I do have a few questions which no one seems to have any idea about answering which fuels defensive posters from those who don’t want to think we might have a slightly selfish footballer in our midst.
-

I sincerely hope we do have a slightly selfish footballer in our midst ! Alex Rance has given his all to Richmond for the last 12 years and he needs a break. He almost walked away from the game previously and we as supporters have been privileged to see him play on until now. Reading Konrad Marshall's new book clearly gives an indication of just how tough this season has been for Rance. I posted the following on a different forum:
Because it's seen as an early retirement I think people find it much harder to accept. What we all (mostly) forget is that to a full time professional AFL footballer this is their job, they are employees, Richmond/AFL the employer, the club is their workplace, their teammates are work colleagues, and it is an abnormal working environment which they enter into usually from 18 years of age. Thankfully Richmond are turning the tide and setting the new standard by bringing the fun back into the game for many of the players. However for most footy fans our viewpoint is coloured by what we want for our team without fully considering what is in the best interest of the individual players. Alex Rance has always had diverse interests away from football, creating balance between all interests was becoming harder and harder for him to maintain and as mentioned in Konrad Marshall's new book Stronger & Bolder when he asked Alex about other pure joyful moments throughout the season, his response was:
"Not really. It's been a hard year. I've put on a brave face and gone about my business and tried to look a short distance in front of me - do this session well, do something to make someone better, do something to make people laugh - but it has been a real grind. I'm really tired. I'm really looking forward to going away. Because when you have to manufacture that enthusiasm, it does exhaust you". (page 135)
He goes on to say if he didn't feel genuinely cared for at the club it would be a lot harder. The way I see it long service leave is way overdue, and when you constantly give that much of yourself you absolutely have to take time out to recharge, to re-energise, and to re-balance. It's imperative for long term health, both physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Conspiracy theories were inevitable.... :whistle
Once a baseless story gets on social media it spreads like anything.
https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/best-football-related-rumour-you-have-heard-from-someone-you-trust.1208031/post-63954123
Directly from a former rookie at the Tigers who is still very good friends with several players at the club.
It was posted on twitter and someone else on reddit. Also a lot of people posting it on various AFL pages on stuff.
-
Better than nothing. Mid season preferable though
-
He will be back in late 2020 season!!! :thumbsup
-
Rance has split with his wife. Obviously there's a lot going on in his life at the moment. Might explain the "silence ".

nothing to see here WP told us, and please dont comment either.
-
Let's hope the media leave him alone so he can work through any issues in his own time. Poor fellow but unfortunately a common occurrence these days.
-
i read somewhere his wife wanted him to continue playing, or was that the other way around.
-
Paywall, share anyone please?
Heard this rumour a few days ago but rubbished it. He must be in a very dark place RN. All the best to him :(

Unfortunately, when footballers are involved, there’s always something more than the straightforward involved.
Say no more.

Great effort
Wouldn't expect anything less from your cheap seats
And I would think a marriage breakdown is none of our business so there is still nothing to see here IMO.
Unless of course you enjoy the need to be captivated by it.

As I said above a marriage breakdown is none of our business even though Rupert's media likes to think it is
To be honest I have no idea why it is being reported because it isn't news! But it is Rupert's Medicare are talking about isn't it? Tabloid trash 101
Does this change anything? Nope
It still is what it is
-
And just one more thing
I read some incredibly gutless, heartless and simply downright cruel comments from spinless keyboard warriors on social media last night. Throw in some pathetic unfounded rumours by the same said spineless keyboard warriors and it showed how pathetic people can truly be.
We don't want to see any of the unsubstantiated rumours or gutter talk on here because it will be removed.
Don't think a bit of respect is to much to ask
-
Theres an old saying
"Those on the field of battle owe no explanation to those on the other side of the fence".
Rance played 200 times. He came when we were rabble. He along with a few others changed the culture of the place and he leaves now a Richmond champion, a Premiership player and the club now described by independent journalists as a Powerhouse.
He owes us nothing. Hes a champion and I wish him the best in his future.
-
So obviously there is more to the story. Had that feeling the moment he announced the retirement
-
What I dont understand is why do the supporters feel they are owed an explanation. Rance doesnt owe us squat. He deserves to retire in peace and live the life he wants.
-
What I dont understand is why do the supporters feel they are owed an explanation. Rance doesnt owe us squat. He deserves to retire in peace and live the life he wants.
probably because he had 2 years left on a CONTRACT & the fact he negotiated and then re-signed said CONTRACT less than 18 months ago

maybe his circumstances have changed. interms of his contract he will forfeit most of it now and he made that decision. there is a cost to decision. itll probably cost him 1.5 to 1.8 million. thats not Richmonds loss thats the cost to Rance. He doesnt owe anyone anything IMO.

Clearly his circumstances have changed. Only time will tell whether the rest of us will find out what those circumstances were/are.
Whether you want to hear it or not.
-
We might need to wait for the book to come out.
🤔
-
It's been difficult to read all the rubbish that is being thrown around, hardly believable but the lack of voice from players on social media had me worried.
My only concern is how this will effect of playing group either harmless retirement or a rococo one, I'm concerned and would love my mind or to rest.
-
Those who think this crap doesn't matter have their heads in the sand. We are paid members and some more than once, and have a right for it to be put to bed and shut down.
This crap I am reading is utter garbage IMO, BUT I think someone from the club needs to say something, or start going legal on these scumbags to show they mean business.
Silence is deafening
-
The lack of comment on social media may suggest the respect and high regard that his fellow team mates hold him in, that they don't wish to make this difficult time any worse.
Don't forget they are all Richmond men.
-
There is definately one bloke on big footy that should be looked in terms of legal action. From memory he is a NORF supporter and truth is he may have nothing to his name just like his club.
-
Even this site has had legal threats so I can't understand why it's allowed elsewhere.
Incredible really. I don't follow big footy and have no interest in it all, never have to be honest, but the texts I have received are a load of rubbish and I assume came from there.
-
Its out of control on big footy. That site should be shut down. Its an online home for numpties.
-

the thing that gets me is y&b gets his arse by the club kicked for reporting the truth, and yet these clowns on another site go undetected. Comments still visible on big footy i assume for all to see.
Figure that one out? :shh

Y&BB posted privately comments which related to the clubs IP on recruiting which they probably felt they have a right to act upon if it is shared beyond their coterie members.
Probably fair enough.
I for one don’t want them wasting valuable soft cap resource on suing football losers who are trying to stir trouble
-
Higgos missus has just gone and publicly denied the rumours and given the trolls a serve as well

Poor bastard
Let him do his joho stuff in peace.

Having gone through divorce myself can only imagine where Alex's head is at. You're very vulnerable. My guess football is the last thing on his mind at the moment. 2020 will be most likely be a write off for him.

Will be like a new recruit in 2021

Well looks like it's police matter now... :shh

Funny, I thought he did. He gave HIS reasons in the press release and in the interview with Richo.
But that wasn't enough for people, folks needed more, there had to be more to it....so Rupert's media obilidged in spades.
Gave us "news" that wasn't actaully news. Thry gave us something that was none of our business but that seemed appease some but not the keyboard warriors on social media. Who have subsequently have had a field day
So here we are; cruel and malicious unfounded rumours. Innocent people dragged into this for no reason and getting hurt (how hurt we will never know) and now people are disgusted by what the gutless have posted on social media (ironic)
Pretty sure after what's gone on over the last few days the obsession of needing to know more hasn't been worth it.... :'(

I feel these dropkicks spreading this garbage think they cant and wont be held to account. I think a club at some point of time should try and hold to account 3 or 4 of these individuals just as an example to everyone else going into the future. This trolling has to stop.

I’ll maintain that whether people like it or not, it’s a valid story that people want to hear.
If people on this forum don’t think it’s “appropriate “ then they should grow up.
Gossip is the way of the world - whether it’s Alex Rance or Wayne Carey - when you choose your vocation you accept the ups and downs.
The highly sensitised nature of this forum shows me how acutely sensitive and protective the forum posters are of the club and its players.
Admirable but embarrassingly naive.

Totally agree. If it wasn't the case then no one would have said a word about the chopsticks saga but many did. Many other examples we can find.
However, when it's a false rumour that degrades people and families that's just wrong.

So you deem the vitriolic abuse, cruel rumours that have dragged innocent parties into something that has nothing to do with them is OK? The way of the world?
If that's how you like your "news" that's your choice.
Just because I don't feed off gossip and don't see it as news doesnt mean I need to grow up, nor does it mean I am naive.
I don't feel the need to feed off others misery or misfortune which is the main purpose of gossip.
Hence, why Rupert's media thrives on it. They dish out a crumb and people crave more. So they dish out more, then the keyboard warriors then jump on board and the lies snowball out of control. How can that be OK, acceptable?

I’ve never stated my view let alone if I like it.
It’s the world we live in - if you don’t like it then join the queue ;D
It also comes with the territory of being a high profile sportsman in this country or many other sports so let’s not get all holier than thou when it affects a Richmond player.

WP, “don’t feed off gossip?”- you it made it pretty clear what punishment you wanted Dusty to receive when you bought into the rumours in the chopstick saga.
And please don’t embarrass yourself and deny you said what you said- from memory you want either a 12 month or 24 month ban.
And for the record I think there is way more to Rance retiring than we all know.
And to think Alex Rance splitting up from his wife a few days after retiring suddenly isn’t news, is just plain ridiculous imo.
And the actual name of this thread speaks for itself too imo.

Yet again someone throws "chopsticks" up accuses me of say things I didn't but hey, so be it
I won't embarass myself at all. For the record I said that he was a moron (so to did the CEO) and whacked him big time for being so drunk he couldn't remember anything. Also whacked him for being out so drunk the night when preseason training had just started
Also said if he was found to have threatened the woman then he should be punished and it should be a hefty penalty. I suggested the entire preseason comp and the 1st five games of 2016, $5k fine and community work with white ribbon (see page 5 of the thread). Don't think that equals 12 or 24 months
I'll leave it there

Why just single out Rupert there WP ? The Unfairfax media are even worse than Rupert when the target is of a political kind they don't like.
-
Got to love the Herald-Sun quoting a known Richmond-hater off twitter :rolleyes.
Thomas should stick to commentating on his hack club that only knows failure and setting dwarves on fire. It must be eating him that we've won more flags in the past 3 years than St Kilda has in its entire 140+ year history.
-

Because on this particular topic (Rance marriage status) the Unfairfax media there has been (borrowing from the title of this thread) "deafening silence"
When it comes to tabloid journalism, Rupert's Media leads the way by a fair margin

Fauxfacts, AB☭ & The Red Guard-ian are every bit as bad - they just use fancier words... :shh

For me there is something not right about this story and I'm not suggesting anything like has been talked or mentioned .I still can't get my head around it no farewell speech online, no Dimma comments and that Cotch interview didn't seem right for me.Whatever it is club needs to go on front foot and put it to bed if it's internal.

Time for a full rebuild... :shh

I just hope that this does not mean we have dissension amongst the players and back to the bad old days of factions within the team

Jacks explained everything. People who have gone looking for more have behaved disgracefully. Its been shameful actually especially from the tigers supporters who havent been able to accept that a player is allowed to retire and to live their life the way the want. As for the idiots on Big Footy, I hope jacks gf sues em, i hope rancy sues and I hope RFC makes an example of that idiot jean cluade goddard or whatever his name. Hes a professional slanderer and someone should do something about it hopefully RFC does. His comments about club last few days have been simply disgraceful. He knows he is lying he knows he is making things up to tarnish our club reputation. I hope we sue his arse.
-
It’s so obvious that the club is in damage control I feel sorry for those who are blindly following the rhetoric.
These tributes were due to a champion player the day he retired, not a week or two later.

Can anyone confirm or deny if Jack actually “unfollowed” Rance on Insta or Twitter when Rance first retired?
I’m not big on social media so I don’t know if it can be checked but I think it would tell a bit of a story if it is true.
Personally I don’t think Rance has done anything really wrong, but I do think potentially his teammates were/are peeed off because he has let them down to a degree.
(Committed for 2 more years, and now walking out)
And I guess I feel the same- these guys talk about leadership all the time, and I guess I just feel it’s basically only when it suits them. (IMO)

I don’t understand what is funny about my post - if this was Collingwood we would be feeding on the carcass.

It’s so obvious that the club is in damage control I feel sorry for those who are blindly following the rhetoric.

I dont see any damage control being done. Richmond is doing what it did with Dusty years ago. They know the rumours are false. They were then they are now. Richmond in full control as those on forums are closing accounts and deleting posts (too late lads)
coz there pooting themselves.
Hrt youd do well not falling for the poo posted in forums. JR8 has answered all questions.

It’s not the rumours I’m worried about - I know where they’ve come from and it’s disappointing that the source of those rumours are closer to the club than we might think.
We haven’t handled the retirement well at all and the circumstances surrounding his departure are odd.
I think for a club as tight as we’ve become, there’s been some fracturing with this announcement

If your mate announces he/she is leaving you give him/her a hug and have a beer. Last thing you may or may not do is get on social media and tell the world.

Disagree- please wish their wife/GF a happy birthday on FB and they are sitting next to them on the couch.
That’s what the kids do.
The silence on social media is unusual to say the least.

I see a high profile attention-seeking anti-Richmond troll and baiter's twitter account has been deleted and another has suddenly stopped posting after regularly posting multiple tweets per day.
Gutless grubby cowards the lot of them :thumbsdown.

WP, “don’t feed off gossip?”- you it made it pretty clear what punishment you wanted Dusty to receive when you bought into the rumours in the chopstick saga.
And please don’t embarrass yourself and deny you said what you said- from memory you want either a 12 month or 24 month ban.
I'll leave it there
without going over all the comments. I recall before it was played out by the club you had an opinion of Dusty. All some have done here is ask the question of rance. It seems when it suits you to go to town its all good, but not okay for anyone to ask the question (without going to town)
One comment i did find is this from you in the dusty episode.
Can I add the clubs "response" to this has been shocking
No wonder we getting whacked from pillar to post
Nothing on the website, no from the club frosting the media
Where are you RFC?
you went on to say that the silence from the club was causing undue strain on the club and player. Some could argue thats exactly what happened to rance. Or is this different :shh

(IMO)
Yep agree. The truth is we may never know, but something was up at some stage. Fair chance it had to do with wanting more success and maybe the sacrifices that some gave up, only to have rance walk away from a contract.

My source was a coterie member who I very much doubt was quoting big footy

You know that most coteries are just as fanatical as us. I know afew and they do read the forums.

Here's the thing, you see a player retiring and a potential legal matter as the same thing. I don't.
Rance retired, released a statement, did an interview with Richo, the club also released a statement and the captain fronted the media. But all those things are not good enough for some people, they need more. There has to be more... well guess what? no there doesn't. And I stand by my comment that the Rance marriage breakdown is none of our business.
On you other points re Dusty. Yes I had an opinion as many people did. Funny how you and others only ever seem to remember none and throw it up. But whatever.... the bits you have quoted in bold are definitely my words.
And yes as I've said above I see it as being very different... Dusty situation was being played put in legal minefield, if you remember the police were involved. So IMHO the Club need to act quickly, they didn't and that was disappointing. What you forget to mention that when they did react, they in their initial statement gave Dusty a bloody good clip and didn't condone his behaviour.
So just to make it clear... you may see the Rance/Dusty scenarios as being the same I don't, far from it.
-
100% difference. Rance just wants to retire. Dusty had some bird making outrageous claims and to which the coppers determined that no criminal offences were
warranted.

I remember you over anyone else in the Dusty fiasco WP because you got on your moral high horse as hard and as early as you did. It disgusted me that much that a tiger fanatic that runs a tiger forum FFS could be so harsh without knowing the whole story and even more without giving Dusty the benefit of the doubt to start with.
You jumped on media reporting of the incident because there was a female involved. We all like/love/respect females but some talk poo and create issues just like men... You don’t need to jump in and defend every female just because they are female.
I’m sure if it was a reported a male was involved instead of a female you wouldn’t have been so harsh and definitively as you were.
And the other comments you made about the club needing to jump in and say something in the Dusty BS is garage too imo- as you said it was in the hands of the police, what did you expect the club to say or do? Especially if the club knew what went on and knew it was all BS.
But you are right about one thing- the issues are completely different, one was a beat up that had to run its legal course, the Rance one is strange to say the least for a number of reasons and it’s human nature to ask or want to find out why.
Reason why it’s strange
-the timing of the announcement
-10 months of rehab only to retire now
-the 2 years remaining on a huge contract
-the timing of the marriage breakup
-the lack of teammates acknowledgment on social media
In isolation 1 or even 2 of these might not mean much, but it’s all a little strange to me and obviously many others.
Surely all that is enough for Tiger supporters to think there might be more to this story!

Again incredibly selective memory. There were people who were helluva lot more critical than me. But you don't remember them at all. Oh that's right you sort of do because you attributed their suggested penalties to me (see your early post) but for some strange reason they don't crack a mention.....

You shouldn't presume how I would have reacted if it involved a male rather than a female because are you would be very very wrong. >:( very wrong

Again selective memory on your part. The Club actually made a statement while it was still being investigated by the police and while the club was investigating it themselves. So I believe it is fair to believe that when they released their statement they did not know it " was all BS". The issue I had (not sure i can make this any clearer) was they took 3 or 4 days to say something while the media was having a field day and when they did make a statement they made it very clear they were extremely disappointed with what happened and they gave him fair clip over it.
But you are right about one thing- the issues are completely different, one was a beat up that had to run its legal course, the Rance one is strange to say the least for a number of reasons and it’s human nature to ask or want to find out why.

Fair points. No issue with your reasoning I just sit on a different bench.
We will have to agree to disagree regarding the marriage breakup and the need to know.
Personally I just accept this retirement for what it is. Disappointing but an individual's right to do what they've deemed best for themselves not others
