Going into the game expected to win yet forced to play our home game against Freo at Princes Park, we almost came up a cropper. Down by 23 pts at 3/4 time after a poor third quarter, we kicked 4 goals to nil in the last to pinch the game. Despite the win to start the 1997 season 3-1, the match fed into the criticism of Walls as coach after the failure to make finals in the previous year and the loss (last quarter choke) to the Bulldogs the week before. The season would go pear-shaped from this point onwards and Walls was sacked with 5 rounds to go.

IMHO, the worst loss and biggest choke I have ever had the absolute misery to experience as a Tiger supporter.
39 pts up at 3/4 time, we kick the first goal of the final quarter to go over 7 goals up.
Game over you would think? Ah no!
We then cave and allow the Pies to kick the last 9 goals straight in about 20 mins to steal the game.
It would be one of 3 massive last quarter chokes in the first month of that season.
No surprise we 'won' the spoon that year.
And yes, 1987 still gives me nightmares :help.
(ii) R4, 2001 @ the M.C.G.
Richmond 3.2-20 8.3-51 11.6-72 13.8-86
Collingwood 3.3-21 4.7-31 5.9-39 10.11-71

Similarities to 1987 but with a final twist. Tigers up by 33 pts at 3/4 time yet the Pies open the final term with 5 straight goals to get back within a point. Brodders then steps up for us in time-on to score two late goals to save the day.

Dusty's breakout game on Easter Sunday, 2011 - 33 disposals (12 contested), four goals, four clearances, 14 score involvements.
Was a star born in this twilight encounter? We all had a pretty good idea that 'Dusty' was going to be special in his debut season a year earlier but this was the first time he surpassed 30 possessions, then he backed up a week later with 35 more at Brisbane's expense. At 19, he was already imposing himself physically, albeit having greater impact to this stage as a forward with midfield bursts. Martin remains a dual threat but now has two premierships, two Norm Smith medals and a Brownlow – among other accolades – on his resume.

After an off-season of reflection and restructing of the footy department, the revitalised Tigers were aiming for 5 straight wins to start a season for the first time in 22 years. However, in front of over 85k on Anzac Eve, Richmond found themselves on the backfoot for the first three quarters as Melbourne were able to create three mini-breaks which had the Tiges trailing by 20 pts at 3/4 time. Lead by a 6-goal haul from Jack Riewoldt and a dominant display from Dusty, Richmond made a final quarter charge kicking 5 goals to nil to get over line. The Tiges would go on to win the premiership for the first time in 37 years while the Dees would miss the finals by only 0.5%.

Long before Collingwood and Essendon established the AFL Anzac Day tradition, Richmond was involved in an epic April 25 clash of its own. Tony Greenberg reflects on the historic 1977 Richmond v Collingwood Anzac Day match.
There had been a substantial sprinkling of spice added to the intense traditional rivalry between neighbouring league clubs Richmond and Collingwood leading into their Round 4 clash of the 1977 season.
Four-time Richmond premiership coach Tommy Hafey had departed Punt Road at the end of 1976 and taken over the coaching reins at Collingwood, which was coming off a disastrous wooden-spoon season – the first in the Magpies’ history.
The Tigers had replaced Hafey with their triple premiership player Barry Richardson, who had been the Club’s assistant coach.
Both teams had a record of two wins and one loss for the season going into the Round 4 fixture at the MCG, which was being held on a Monday due to it being the Anzac Day holiday.
The massive crowd of 92,436 that filled the MCG stands that day was the catalyst for the modern-day Collingwood-Essendon Anzac Day blockbusters.
That attendance was the then second highest home-and-away figure in league football history and, 43 years on, it’s the fifth largest ever.
There was a finals-like atmosphere reverberating around the famous ground, as the huge supporter armies of both clubs turned out in force on a superb autumn day to see if it would be the master (Hafey), or his apprentice (Richardson), who would emerge victorious.
The match lived up to the hype, too, with plenty of high-intensity football, top-class performances and highlights.
Unfortunately, however, the end result certainly wasn’t to the liking of the Yellow and Black faithful, with Collingwood winning by 26 points.
In keeping with the finals-type conditions, the opening term was a desperate scramble, with both teams striving to seize the early initiative.
The Magpies took a narrow four-point lead into the quarter-time break, but it should have been significantly more, as they managed just four goals from 11 shots.
By half-time, although they had increased their lead to 19 points, the match remained in the balance.
But right at the start of the third quarter, there was an incident that perhaps highlighted the state of mind some of the Richmond players were in, coming up against their much-loved and admired former coach Tommy Hafey.
Experienced Tiger star ruck-rover Kevin Sheedy took the ball from the opening bounce and booted the ball as far forward as he could, in a determined bid to get his team off to a flying start in the third term.
The only problem was Sheedy, inexplicably, had kicked it the wrong way – right down the throat of star Collingwood forward Phil Carman – much to the sheer delight of the Magpie Army and the utter despair of the Tiger Army.
Sheedy later recalled: “I've got a very sore tail, where I was kicked by about 5000 members for kicking that ball the wrong way. I just looked at Carman (who marked the ball) and said to myself: ‘What a bloody silly thing to do’.”
Tiger heads seemed to slump after that shocking Sheedy mistake and the Magpies swooped, slamming on four quick goals, to shoot 41 points clear.
Richmond, to its credit, though, managed to steady and reduce the deficit to 20 points at three-quarter time.
In the final term, although the Tigers pressed hard, Collingwood was able to keep them at bay and go on to record a comfortable victory.
Despite the disappointing result, one bright light for Richmond was the excellent senior debut of young forward David Miller, who kicked five goals.
Club historian Rhett Bartlett recently interviewed Miller, who provided an insight into what it was like to debut in a blockbuster clash between two of league football’s most traditional and fierce rivals, before of a crowd of such magnitude . . .
“I never even actually thought there would be a big crowd. I was probably caught up in the emotion of playing my first game, so I never really considered it,” Miller said.
“A few mates were going to go and watch me, and I said I'd give them a wave when I get out on the ground because I knew they were going to be out over near Bay 13. I don't think a lot of them got in till quarter-time . . .
“I was petrified.
“I was more worried about making a fool of myself or not getting a kick.
“But it worked out I had a pretty good game. I kicked five goals, and still, to this day, I still think I should have kicked seven.
“I remember going for one goal on the boundary and remember thinking, ‘Do I do the team thing?’ And it was touched on the line.
“A lot of people still talk about it or introduce me because I kicked five goals in one game.
“It's lasted a long time I tell you Rhett.”
That day, Miller also joined the exclusive club of players who scored a goal with their first kick in league football.
“It was at the Punt Road end and I remember I sort of read it off the top of the pack and ran into the open goal. It was a ‘gimme’ goal. It was probably in the 10-yard square,” he said.
Here’s how chief football writer of ‘The Age’ newspaper at the time, Ron Carter, viewed the original Anzac Day epic encounter in 1977 . . .
“After yesterday’s win, Hafey walked the familiar path back to the Punt Road ground for a cup of tea and a yarn with many Richmond friends at the after-match entertainment.
Hafey admitted: “It was a strange feeling playing Richmond because so many of them are my best friends . . . that does make it difficult . . . but that’s football and we can’t do much about it.
“I think the (Collingwood) players might have put more into their game just for my sake.”
As for Hafey’s former players in Richmond jumpers, it looked at times as though they were trying to help him win it.
Kevin Sheedy, of all people, grabbed the ball in the centre at the first bounce after half-time and kicked it the wrong way, straight to Phil Carman.
The Tigers seemed to have an emotional build-up before the game, knowing they were going against their old coach.
But coach Barry Richardson said this did not lose him the game.
“The players were tense and fumbled their way through the first half, maybe as a result of trying too hard . . . I’d like to think that,” he said.”

People forget between 1970 and 1990, Richmond played on Anzac Day 14 times in 20 years.
1970, 1972, 1973, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990.
We also played the last one in 1994 before Collingwood & Essendon took it over. Being a bottom side over the decade prior to 1995 cost us.

Richmond looked like being on the end of a 100-point drubbing when it trailed Hawthorn by 51 points late in the second quarter of their Round 5, 2003 clash at the MCG on Saturday, April 26.
Incredibly, less than a quarter later, the Tigers had hit the front – and they stormed home to an awe-inspiring 20-point triumph.
It was the greatest comeback win in Richmond’s league football history and ranks among the best ever in the competition.
Even more meritorious was the fact that it came off the back of just a five-day break, compared to Hawthorn’s seven-day rest.
The Tigers had defeated St Kilda by 26 points at Etihad Stadium the previous Monday night, while Hawthorn had beaten Sydney by 42 points at the MCG two days earlier.
When the Hawks burst out of the blocks, and built that 51-point lead 22 minutes into the second term, not even the most one-eyed Tiger supporter could have dreamed what was about to happen next.
Richmond somehow managed to not only stem the bleeding before half-time, but hit the scoreboard, too, kicking four quick goals.
The deficit at the main break, however, was still a sizeable 27 points and, given the advantage Hawthorn had with that extra couple of days’ rest, it certainly appeared a mountain too high for the Tigers to climb.
A slice of brilliance from clever small Tiger forward Andrew Krakouer at the start of the third quarter was the catalyst for the Yellow and Black onslaught.
In Richmond’s forward pocket, at the Punt Road end of the ground, Krakouer threw himself underneath a Hawthorn opponent, emerged with the ball, and fired out a handpass to big ruckman Greg Stafford, who snapped a goal on his left foot.
Moments later, Stafford goaled again from point-blank range after receiving a free kick for being held without the ball.
Richmond has released tickets for a mezzanine seating area at its Homecoming function on Saturday, July 11
Stafford, although predominantly a ruckman, was always dangerous when ‘resting’ forward, due to his powerful build (204cm and 106kg), mobility for a big man, and football ‘smarts’.
He played an important role in the tremendous Tiger turnaround against the Hawks, along with his little partner Krakouer.
Several years later, star Tiger midfielder Kane Johnson, who received two Brownlow votes for his excellent performance in the mighty comeback victory over Hawthorn, spoke about the impact both Stafford and Krakouer had deep in the team’s forward line, during a special ‘Roar Vision’ interview with another former teammate, Matthew Richardson.
“The instruction was to just get it long down to the big ‘fella’ (Stafford). He’s got a big frame on him and if we can get it down long to him, he could at least get it front and square for blokes like (Andrew) Krakouer, David Rodan and Kayne Pettifer,” Johnson said.
“And, it seemed to work early in the (third) quarter, because the big fella was holding his ground and making sure we got first use of the ball.
“On that day, when ‘Staf’ went forward, and was getting the ball to the ground, ‘Krakky’ (Andrew Krakouer) was really, really dangerous . . . he was causing havoc down there.
“Whether he was kicking a goal, or actually handing one off, or just getting the right hand in there at the right time, he created a lot of opportunities for us that day . . .”
Johnson also paid tribute to the team-lifting efforts of fellow Tiger midfielder Mark Coughlan.
“In that third quarter, he had a couple of attacks on the ball that really set the rest of the team up, which was inspiring for the rest of the team to follow,” Johnson said.
Unbelievably, Richmond hit the front with seven minutes still left on the clock in the third quarter, when captain Wayne Campbell (he picked up the three Brownlow votes in the match) took a mark on the 50-metre arc and dished it off by hand to super-talented rebounding defender Leon Cameron, whose kick floated through for a goal.
The Tiger Army went wild . . . And their delirium continued when ‘pocket rocket’ David Rodan raced into an open goal shortly afterwards.
By three-quarter time, Richmond’s lead was out to 15 points, and its stunning goalkicking run continued into the final term, before the Hawks finally broke the sequence, kicking their first goal in about 50 minutes of game time.
All-up, Richmond had scored 14 unanswered goals in one of the most spectacular attacking barrages ever seen from any team in league football history.
The final siren signalled a 20-point win for the Tigers, much to the utter delight of the Yellow and Black faithful.
They had been fortunate to witness something very special indeed on that late April Saturday in 2003 at the MCG.

Richmond won 5 matches in a row to start a season for the first time in 53 years (since 1942). Tragically, captain Tony Free did his ACL in this game which effectively ended his career. He would return for just a single game in 1996 before retiring after 133 games at just 26 years of age.

The Dean Polo on debut Dreamtime at the 'G game!
Close match all day thanks to poor goalkicking by both sides (a combined 1.17 in the 2nd qtr alone). The Tigers lead by 16 pts ten minutes into the last before the Bombers kicked four-in-a-row to grab the lead going into time-on. Tivs got one back before Polo kicked his 3rd to level the score. In the desperate final minutes with the ball trapped in Essendon's forward line, the Tiges got a break out of defence via fellow debutant JON who bombed a long point on the run after several bounces to grab the lead at the 30 min mark. We'd score another point after the Bombers' kick-in and hold on for the two-point victory.

Our biggest ever win over Carlton! The Tiges blasted out of the blocks and kicked the first 12 goals of the game. The Blues didn't kick their first until the 24th min mark of the second quarter and got the obligatory bronx jeers ;D. At half-time the margin was already 77 points. The biggest margin got out to 98 pts midway through the last quarter before we switched off and ultimately won by 85.

A young calf called Matthew and son of bull Alan Richardson made his debut. Richo would have 20 disposals (nine kicks, 11 handballs), nine marks, two tackles and one goal (1.2) playing on Saints stuff and his future Tiger coach Danny Frawley. Richo would ultimately play 282 games, kick 800 goals and win the club's leading goalkicking award 13 times in 17 seasons of AFL. Despite retiring in 2009, Richo still holds the record for most goals at the home of football wih 464 (Jack Riewoldt is closest of current AFL players with 350 out of interest).
Duncan Kellaway also made his debut in the same game - 27 disposals (12 kicks, 15 handballs), five marks and one tackle.

Our first of two 100+ point thumpings of the Dogs in 1980. It's our biggest win at Western Oval. Roach kicked a career high bag of 11 goals on his way to a century and the Coleman medal. KB slotted a lazy 4 himself on his way to a career best 84 goals in a season. The win took us to the top of the ladder. We of course would ultimately go onto win our 10th VFL flag.

Daryn Cresswell got the margin back under a kick and with the Swans pushing for the winner in the last few minutes we desperately clung on to snatch victory.
ps. I also remember thing game as I almost got into a post-match fight with a ticked off Swans supporter :wallywink :snidegrin.

Mother's Day 1991. The Tigers came into this match having won only one game for the season (1-5) whereas the reigning premier Magpies were sitting inside the top 6 and fresh coming off the bye. Predictably all the pundits has this marked down as a comfortable win for the Pies on a lazy sunny Sunday arvo. However, the Tiges lead by a bag of 10 from Hoggy who was fed by our quick small mids had other ideas. They just didn't beat Collingwood but smashed them in the end. A rare joyous day in what was then dark times.

In Elliot Cartledge’s excellent book, ‘The Hafey Years’, Bourke described the emotions he felt upon learning of his inaugural senior selection.
“On the Thursday night before my first game, I heard my name on 3DB (Melbourne radio station). That was the way it was done,” Bourke said.
“I went to bed that excited, I could hardly sleep, and dreamt that I slept in the following night and missed the game.
“The next night I was so terrified I was going to sleep in that I hardly slept at all.”
Despite his lack of sleep, Bourke produced an encouraging first-up performance.
The 20-year-old was introduced to the on-field action after quarter-time, as a replacement for dashing half-back flanker Graham Burgin, who had suffered a knee injury.
In three quarters of football, Bourke had nine kicks, three handballs, took one mark and kicked a goal.

In front of over 85k people at the 'G, the top of the ladder Tigers faced third placed reigning premiers Carlton. The winner to go top. In a portent of what was to come later that year in September, KB slammed on 7 goals while Roach kicked 6 and Wiley amassed 46 disposals (no that's not a misprint - he had 33 kicks, 13 handballs) which is still a MCG record for most disposals by any Tiger. Our 53 point demolition of the Blues announced to the footy world that we were the real deal in 1980.

The first time the Dreamtime game really took off and captured the public's imagination. The Bombers were sitting 3rd on the ladder going into the game while we were half a win outside the top 8. In front of a crowd of 83k, the match was neck and neck for 2.5 quarters before a four goal burst from the Tiges late in the 3rd quarter gave us a 22 point lead at 3/4 time. Despite the Bombers pressing in the last and getting within 10 points heading into time on, a late Ty Vickery goal sealed a memorable win.

Before our time but to this day this 138 point hammering of the Pies is still our highest score and biggest win over Collingwood and still their biggest ever loss to anyone. Jack Titus kicked 10 goals for the third and last time of his 18-season career and passed 900 goals (at that time only Gordon Coventry had kicked more goals). 77 years after his retirement, Titus still sits highly in sixth on the all-time VFL/AFL goalkickers list and remains the No.1 Tiger for most goals ever kicked (970).

The game itself was the first rematch of the 1974 GF combatants minus the injured Royce Hart. However, it is remembered more for John Pitura's RFC debut after his controversial transfer from South Melbourne to Richmond. The Tigers had given up Graham Teasdale (a future Brownlow medallist), Brian 'the Whale' Roberts and Francis Jackson for him. In the end, the trade would become an infamous total flop with Pitura playing just 40 games for Richmond over 3 seasons before departing.

In the days when players could transfer clubs midseason, Gareth Andrews made his Richmond debut after crossing from Geelong where he had played against the Tigers in the 1967 GF. In a quirk of the 1974 fixture, Andrews played against North Melbourne twice in seven days (for Geelong in round 7 and then for Richmond in round 8 ). The move was a result of a sensational swap at the time which saw Rex Hunt (who was a dual Tiger premiership player) head down the highway to the Cattery. In the end, the trade was a success as Andrews would go on and become a member of our premiership win that year.

Winless coming into the Dreamtime game in the horror year that was 2007, the Tigers lead by 3 goals when Richo kicked his 4th at the 17th minute mark of the last quarter. The Bombers responded kicking the next 3 goals in 5 minutes to have the game in the balance with just minutes remaining. Enter the umpires and a new push in the back interpretation just introduced. With the ball kicked into the Richmond F50, Richo holds off the backing back Bomber full back Mal Michael to take the mark, play on and kick what would have been the winning goal. However, Richo is pinged for a push in the back and then penalised 50m for being demonstrative towards the umpire. The penalty results in the winning goal to Essendon instead. 12 years later that 'interpretation' is scrapped by the AFL rules committee to enable more goal scoring. Richo by now a footy TV commentator notes the irony.
ps. The match was also the debut game for Jack Riewoldt.

With Richmond starting 1995 joint top of the ladder after 8 rounds at 7-1 on the back of a very accurate Richo kicking 27 goals 3 behinds, the premiership hopes of the Tiger Army were crueled when Richo did his ACL up in Sydney. On the lead along the boundary line going for a mark, Richo was pushed in the back by Swan stuff Andrew Dunkley. Richo tried to pull up quickly to avoid crashing into the fence due to the very narrow boundary of the S.C.G. As a result, his knee locked awkwardly and his ACL was torn.
This was the Tigers' second season-ending knee injury after captain Tony Free likewise did his ACL back in round 5. Despite winning the match, the injury toll further mounted when centre half-back Stuart Wigney badly injured his ankle and would miss 10 weeks. In the space of a month, Richmond had lost its star key forward, its captain and key in and under midfielder, and an in-form key defender. Wigney would return later in the year but was never the same player for us as in those first 9 rounds.
Richmond would still finish top 4 and make the finals for the first time in 13 years but the damage as far as a genuine flag contender was done despite a brave comeback semi-final win over Essendon. As for Richo, he would make a successful comeback the following year to kick 6 goals in round 1 of 1996 against the Bombers.

A match between 15th vs 16th wouldn't normally be memorable but this game gained massive interest especially in WA with it being Ben Cousins' first game in Perth since he left the Eagles and arrived at Richmond. A crowd of 35k turned up with a number of West Coast fans cheering for 'Cuz' and the Tiges against their crosstown rivals in Freo. In the end, the match itself turned into a thriller. After we had coughed up a 14 point lead heading into time-on in the last quarter, Mitch Morton put us in front with only around two minutes to go to win the game.

Midway through the 1980 season, this top of the ladder clash between 1st (Richmond) and 2nd (North) drew a then record H&A crowd between the two clubs of 61,789 at the M.C.G. With Roach kicking 7 and KB 3, the Tigers kept their noses in front for the whole four quarters to win by 7 points. The victory put Richmond a game and half ahead of the rest on top of the ladder.

Our first genuine Friday night blockbluster under Hardwick. The up and coming Tigers entered the match off the back of big wins against premiership fancies Hawthorn and Sydney. The Saints on the other hand were seen as a big test for the Tigers, not only for being a finalist for 7 of the past 8 years including 3 grand finals, but also for the fact the Tigers hadn't beaten St Kilda in 9 years (13 losses & a draw). In what turned out to be a close-scoring shootout in front of a packed crowd at Docklands stadium, Richmond got a 20 point mini-break early in the last quarter before the Saints kicked 4 straight goals to reclaim the lead. The difference in the end would be Jack Riewoldt who kicked his 6th, 7th and then finally his 8th deep in time-on to get us across the line. While both sides would ultimately miss the Final Eight in 2012, this match proved to be a portent for the future. The then young Tiges would rise to dual premiership glory while St Kilda on the way down would spend the rest of the decade outside the Eight wallowing in mediocrity.

After losing our first four matches of 1990 by a combined total of over 300 points, KB's Tigers regrouped and were in search of our fourth win in six games. In David Cloke's 300th game, former Blue David Honybun kicked 6 goals against his old side at the M.C.G. as the Tiges won by 23 points. I just remember everyone going nuts as back in those SOS days we weren't use to winning that many games in a short period of time lol.

Richmond headed across the Nullabor to face the Eagles on their home turf with both teams on 5-3 and vying for a top 8 spot: the proverbial 8-point game. After a sluggish first quarter which saw us a goal down, the Tigers burst to life kicking the next 9 goals straight in the space of 35 minutes to the blitz the Eagles. Brett Deledio was best on ground, a young Nick Vlastuin kicked 3, Ivan Maric guts it out strongly in the ruck against both Dean Cox & Nic Natanui, while stuff Alex Rance shut out Eagle spearhead Josh Kennedy after quarter time.
Former Tiger Matthew Richardson praised it at the time as our best team performance for 2013:

The first game after losing Richo for the season due to his ACL. Everyone was wondering how we would fare without our young gun key forward. After a close first three quarters, the Tigers kicked away in the last kicking 5 goals to 1. Midfielder Paul Broderick lead the way with 36 possies while Stuart Edwards filled in at full forward with 3 goals (& 6 behinds) including 9 marks. Sadly, he never came on and was delisted a year later. The win though that day put the Tigers a game clear on top of the ladder.

After returning to full-forward in 1985, Roach kicks 7 against the Dees in round 11 to bring up his 50th goal and lead the Coleman race at the midpoint of the season.
Coleman Medal after Round 11, 1985:
Roach 54
Quinlan 49
Beasley 43 .... would end up winning the Coleman.
Taylor 41
Ablett 39
Lockett 32
Sadly, Roach would miss 5 games over the course of the season which likely cost him another century and potentially another Coleman medal.
