In front of over 85k people at the 'G, the top of the ladder Tigers faced third placed reigning premiers Carlton. The winner to go top. In a portent of what was to come later that year in September, KB slammed on 7 goals while Roach kicked 6 and Wiley amassed 46 disposals (no that's not a misprint - he had 33 kicks, 13 handballs) which is still a MCG record for most disposals by any Tiger. Our 53 point demolition of the Blues announced to the footy world that we were the real deal in 1980.

On this day ...... 23rd May

Wins:     8
Losses:  6

First played: R4, 1908 ...... Richmond 6.9-45 lost to Essendon 11.16-82 @ East Melbourne C.G.
Goals: Bill Bourke 3, Stan O'Connell, Ted Ryan, Billy Schmidt.

Last played: R9, 2009 ...... Richmond 12.13-85 lost to Essendon 19.11-125 @ the M.C.G.
Goals: Mitch Morton 3, Nathan Brown 2, Kayne Pettifer 2.
Disp: Shane Tuck 30, Nathan Foley 27, Daniel Jackson 26, Joel Bowden 23

Closest game: Won by 4 points.
                          R4, 1931 ...... Richmond 10.12-72 def. Collingwood 9.14-68 @ Punt Rd.

                          Goals: Doug Strang 4, Tom O'Halloran 2.

Most memorable: Biggest ever win over Collingwood.

                             R3, 1942 ...... Richmond 25.25-175 def. Collingwood 5.7-37 @ Punt Rd.

Goals: Jack Titus 10, Andy Brannan 5, Dick Harris 4, Bob Bawden 2.

Before our time but to this day this 138 point hammering of the Pies is still our highest score and biggest win over Collingwood and still their biggest ever loss to anyone. Jack Titus kicked 10 goals for the third and last time of his 18-season career and passed 900 goals (at that time only Gordon Coventry had kicked more goals). 77 years after his retirement, Titus still sits highly in sixth on the all-time VFL/AFL goalkickers list and remains the No.1 Tiger for most goals ever kicked (970).

Tiger milestones on this day:
Dick Grimmond debut (R5, 1959) ....... 102 games.
Shane Tuck 100th game (R9, 2009) ..... 173 games over 10 seasons.

Last played: R8, 2015 ......... Richmond 11.10-76 def. Port Adelaide 5.13-43 @ Adelaide Oval.
                      Goals: Jack Riewoldt 4.
Disp: Brandon Ellis 31, Dustin Martin 29, Brett Deledio 28, Shaun Grigg 26, Anthony Miles 26.

                         R8, 1975 ......... Richmond 9.12-66 lost to North Melbourne 11.8-74 @ Arden St.

Goals: John Pitura 3, Steven Taubert 2.
Disp: Gareth Andrews 25, Kevin Bartlett 22, Neil Balme 21.

Most memorable: See above --- R8, 1975

The game itself was the first rematch of the 1974 GF combatants minus the injured Royce Hart. However, it is remembered more for John Pitura's RFC debut after his controversial transfer from South Melbourne to Richmond. The Tigers had given up Graham Teasdale (a future Brownlow medallist), Brian 'the Whale' Roberts and Francis Jackson for him. In the end, the trade would become an infamous total flop with Pitura playing just 40 games for Richmond over 3 seasons before departing.

Tiger milestones on this day:
Bill Barrott 100th game (R8, 1969) ............. 120 RFC games, dual premiership player (1967, 69),
                                                                 RFC B&F (1965), 11 games for Victoria.
Brett Deledio 200th game (R10, 2014) ........ 243 RFC games, dual B&F (2008-09).
Bachar Houli 100th game (R10, 2014) ......... 181 RFC games, dual premiership player (2017, 19).

In the days when players could transfer clubs midseason, Gareth Andrews made his Richmond debut after crossing from Geelong where he had played against the Tigers in the 1967 GF. In a quirk of the 1974 fixture, Andrews played against North Melbourne twice in seven days (for Geelong in round 7 and then for Richmond in round 8 ). The move was a result of a sensational swap at the time which saw Rex Hunt (who was a dual Tiger premiership player) head down the highway to the Cattery. In the end, the trade was a success as Andrews would go on and become a member of our premiership win that year.

Tiger milestones on this day:
Leo Merrett debut (R5, 1940) ................ 170 games, 1943 premiership player, 2x B&F (1942, 44).

Chris Newman debut (R9, 2002) ............ 268 games, RFC captain (2009-12).

On this day ...... 26th May

                         R4, 1923 ..... Richmond 8.8-56 lost to St Kilda 8.13-61 @ Punt Rd.

Disp: Hughie James 2, Norm Turnbull 2.

Most memorable: Richo fumes over THAT push in the back.

                             R9, 2007 .... Richmond 12.12-84 lost to Essendon 12.20-92 @ the M.C.G.

Goals: Matthew Richardson 4, Daniel Jackson 3, Andrew Krakouer 2.
Disp: Brett Deledio 25, Joel Bowden 25, Graham Polak 25, Andrew Raines 24, Shane Tuck 24.
                             Full stats: https://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/2007/051420070526.html

Winless coming into the Dreamtime game in the horror year that was 2007, the Tigers lead by 3 goals when Richo kicked his 4th at the 17th minute mark of the last quarter. The Bombers responded kicking the next 3 goals in 5 minutes to have the game in the balance with just minutes remaining. Enter the umpires and a new push in the back interpretation just introduced. With the ball kicked into the Richmond F50, Richo holds off the backing back Bomber full back Mal Michael to take the mark, play on and kick what would have been the winning goal. However, Richo is pinged for a push in the back and then penalised 50m for being demonstrative towards the umpire. The penalty results in the winning goal to Essendon instead. 12 years later that 'interpretation' is scrapped by the AFL rules committee to enable more goal scoring. Richo by now a footy TV commentator notes the irony.

ps. The match was also the debut game for Jack Riewoldt.
