On this day ...... 19th April

Wins:    7
Losses: 6

First played: R1, 1947 ......... Richmond 18.27-135 def. North Melbourne 15.14-104 @ Punt Rd.
Goals: Jack Dyer 5, Ron Evans 4, Albert Pannam 4, Frank Bourke 3.

Last played: R4, 2009 ......... Richmond 13.14-92 lost to Melbourne 14.16-100 @ the M.C.G.

Disp: Joel Bowden 44, Nathan Foley 32, Jordan McMahon 28, Shane Tuck 25.

Closest game: 5 pts (one loss and one win)
                          First the one we lost:
                          R3, 1969 ......... Richmond 13.28-106 lost to North Melbourne 16.15-111 @ the M.C.G.
Goals: Rex Hunt 5, Kevin Bartlett 2, Don Davenport 2.
Disp: Bill Barrot 33, Kevin Bartlett 27, Royce Hart 26, Dick Clay 23.
A bad (goal-)kicking is bad footy game  :P. Rex also kicked 7 behinds, KB 5, Davenport 4 while Royce was off-target with 3 straight behinds. Out of the 28 behinds we kicked that day just one was rushed.

Most memorable: The one we won by 5 pts.
                              R4, 1997 ....... Richmond 10.12-72 def. Fremantle 10.7-67 @ Princes Park.

Goals: Joel Bowden 2, Nick Daffy 2, Matthew Richardson 2.
Disp: Wayne Campbell 34, Duncan Kellaway 28, Paul Broderick 20.

Going into the game expected to win yet forced to play our home game against Freo at Princes Park, we almost came up a cropper. Down by 23 pts at 3/4 time after a poor third quarter, we kicked 4 goals to nil in the last to pinch the game. Despite the win to start the 1997 season 3-1, the match fed into the criticism of Walls as coach after the failure to make finals in the previous year and the loss (last quarter choke) to the Bulldogs the week before. The season would go pear-shaped from this point onwards and Walls was sacked with 5 rounds to go.

nb. We lead by 19 pts at the 26 min mark of the last quarter before the Dogs tied the scores in the final 5 minutes  :P.

Most memorable: Two of them for different final results.

                              (i) R4, 1987 @ Waverley Park.

                              Richmond     2.4-16    7.7-49    14.8-92   15.10-100

IMHO, the worst loss and biggest choke I have ever had the absolute misery to experience as a Tiger supporter.
39 pts up at 3/4 time, we kick the first goal of the final quarter to go over 7 goals up.
Game over you would think? Ah no!
We then cave and allow the Pies to kick the last 9 goals straight in about 20 mins to steal the game.
It would be one of 3 massive last quarter chokes in the first month of that season.
No surprise we 'won' the spoon that year.
And yes, 1987 still gives me nightmares  :help.

                              (ii) R4, 2001 @ the M.C.G.
                              Richmond     3.2-20    8.3-51    11.6-72    13.8-86
                              Collingwood  3.3-21    4.7-31      5.9-39   10.11-71

Goals: Paul Broderick 2, Leon Cameron 2, Rory Hilton 2.
Disp: Wayne Campbell 28, Mark Chaffey 25, Rory Hilton 22.

Similarities to 1987 but with a final twist. Tigers up by 33 pts at 3/4 time yet the Pies open the final term with 5 straight goals to get back within a point. Brodders then steps up for us in time-on to score two late goals to save the day.
