The Tigers lead the league in inside 50s, but haven’t been able to convert that to scores the same way Port and Sydney have. Changkuoth Jiath and Blake Hardwick had a field day cutting them off on Sunday. They’ll have to find a way around Tom McCartin this week, who has started the season well.

RICHMOND v SYDNEY SWANS (Tom Derickx Cup)
Saturday April 3, 1.45pm at MCG
How to watch on Fox Footy: Channel 504 from 12pm, with the Saturday Countdown team of Anthony Hudson, Dermott Brereton and David King before Sarah Jones, Mark Howard, Garry Lyon, Jonathan Brown and Cameron Mooney call the action.
Tigers’ burning question: Is this a banana peel game for them?
It’s more than that. It’s a genuine challenge — and especially when you consider how the Tigers have struggled to shake the Swans in past meetings. Richmond hasn’t exactly dominated against Sydney in recent years, with eight-point, 22-point and 26-point wins in their last three meetings, plus a nine-point loss back in 2017. And those games were all before Sydney coach John Longmire implemented this new, enthralling gamestyle and unleashed one of the best groups of young guns in the AFL. The tactical battle will be fascinating as to whether the Swans will be prepared to take on the disciplined Tigers structure. If they do, you know Richmond will counter by applying that quintessential defensive pressure that has undone so many teams in the past four years.
Swans’ burning question: Who goes to Dusty?
The logical choice would be Goerge Hewett, who’s been Sydney’s renowned run-with player for many years. But as many pundits have pointed out, Dustin Martin is now an AFL ‘striker’ — a powerful, physical player that does maximum damage in the forward half, often within ‘striking’ distance of goal. It led to triple premiership Lion Justin Leppitsch to throw up “a left-field” suggestion on SEN’s Whateley this week for the Swans to throw at Martin: Dane Rampe. Leppitsch said Martin would be “too classy” for Hewett and Rampe, An All-Australian and Swans club champion, would have the capabilities to curtail the Tigers superstar inside forward 50. It would mean sending Sam Reid into defence to help Tom McCartin tackle Tigers duo Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt and free up Rampe on Martin, but Leppitsch said it’d be worthwhile, telling SEN: ““I think he’d be elite on Dusty in the forward 50. No one can score on Rampe, although Taylor Walker did OK (in Round 2), but he’d be better on Martin than anyone else they’ve got.”
Fox Footy expert tipsters’ verdict: Richmond 14 — Sydney Swans 1

-
I think Richmond wins but it may only be a goal or two in it.
-
Media all over swans lol beat the wooden spooners and a inconsistent lions outfit.
-
Rampe says he'll put his hand up to play on Dusty in our forward 50 but not in the midfield.

-
Swans are trying to copy us.
--------------------------------------
[Sydney] are ranked 16th for percentage of clearances won and have the AFL's worst differential in scores from stoppages.
What they lack there is more than made up for in punishing turnovers. It's a formula that has served Richmond so well over the past four years.
Despite being ranked 10th in generating forward half turnovers, they're ranked first in scores (51.5) from turnovers in that part of the ground scores from turnovers overall (81).

Melbourne's forecast for the rest of Saturday:
Max 32
Sunny. Winds north to northwesterly 20 to 30 km/h.
http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/forecasts/melbourne.shtml
-
I’m always a bit worried about a longmuir team. Will back our boys in but a really danger game. Just like how the young guns in port almost got on top last year in the prelim I feel the injection of classy youth in the swans could be a curve ball for us. Either way I’m pumped and hope the tigers bring home the Easter chocolates!
-
Sloppy start when we have the ball. Ball bouncing between the arcs.
-
Some soft efforts in the contest and decision making has been lazy so far. Caddy just then had a free man back in the corridor and he kicks to a 50/50 on the wing and it sets up a shot for the Swans on the turnover.
-
That was soft ump. Got what it deserved.
We've been off so far :P.
-
Can we actually hit a target by foot going forward? :banghead
-
Lucky they are missing. They should be 4 goals up.
-
Prestia???
-
Someone subbed off for Rioli. Is it Meaty?
-
Thanks Sheds. Geez we needed that.
8 - 17
-
Yep torch & HRT. Prestia subbed off with a hammy :(.
-
Quarter time
Richmond 1.3-9
Sydney 2.5-17
Goal: Edwards.
Well that was the worst quarter we've played in a long time :thumbsdown. They outworked and out-pressured us. Killing us in the clearances. Our skills and decision making was like U10s.
Hopefully Prestia's hammy isn't a bad one :pray.
-
Terrible first quarter.
Expert comments by Leppitsch are gold.
-
We haven't turned to play. Brainfade after brainfade. It's like that Saints game in 2017.
-
Our midfield is getting a lesson. Under the pump and nowhere to be seen.
-
We are getting what we deserved but Papley is such a diver ::).
-
Dimma on the bench working on the whiteboard. So he's definitely not happy.
-
Watching Eggs today I’m absolutely agree with WP.
Rubbish. :banghead
Has some mates today too.
-
Well done Jack :gotigers.
Rich 2.5-17
Syd 4.8-32
-
Sheds toe poke to Dusty out of middle. Aarts to George for goal :gotigers
Rich 3.5-23
Syd 4.8-32
Hopefully we've now woken up.
-
When is playing advantage ever pulled back.? Umps are giving Sydney an armchair ride.
-
Baker not suited to these rules. Time for a new position
-
Our small forwards are having another shocker. Lynch is quiet too.
-
When is playing advantage ever pulled back.? Umps are giving Sydney an armchair ride.
The Swans are dropping the ball as soon as they are getting tackled and the umps are allowing it.
-
Forward line has been dysfunctional this year. No one at the drop of the ball and cant lock it in.
-
Backline looks lazy and panicky.
Lynch is pathetic. Effort terrible.
Generally sloppy.
-
We've conceded 5.8-38 from turnovers :help.
-
Why not go for goal from there Aarts?
George gets the goal anywhere :gotigers.
Rich 4.5-29
Syd 6.10-46
-
Have we got 18 on the field?
-
Amateurish. Our back half is wide open at centre clearances. You've got to protect the defensive side.
-
Have we got 18 on the field?
Plenty of passengers that's for sure.
-
I really thought that Heeney free and goal should have been a free to Pickett for a block
-
How are Swans 30m free forward of the ball?
No accountability.
-
She is all over. Nankervis is getting a bath, no sweeper on the back of the square, no adjustments made on field.
-
That was as soft a free as you’ll see.
-
At the game and the players should feel embarrassed at half time. Work rate not good enough.
Be like the rising of Lazarus if we get up here.
-
Half-time
Richmond 1.3 4.6-30
Sydney 2.5 10.10-70
Goals: Castagna 2, Riewoldt, Edwards.
:help
-
Well that was embarrassing :gobdrop
-
We had a bad lost to Hawthorn round 3 last year.
Will be the kick up the arse we need
-
That was as soft a free as you’ll see.
We've been woeful beyond words but the umps sure have given the Swans plenty of cheapies.
-
Swans are upcoming force. Gun youngsters in that side. Weve been trash. Nank smashed in ruck. Mids smashed in the middle. Forwards doing nuffin. Eggmolese lol. Why play him? Play a Ralphsmith instead. Anyway swannies to good today. Longmuir giving Dimma a coaching lesson today.
-
Cannot name one player who's been OK.
Can name quite a few that have been disgraceful
-
Egg has been scrambled
-
Our forwardline is basically Castagna.
-
6 Tigers with just 2 kicks or less in a half of footy (not including Prestia) compared to just the Swans 1 (Hewitt who is tagging Dusty).
15 Swans to just our 4 in terms of score involvements. One side is playing as a team and we've got too many passengers and relying on a few individuals to lift us.
Bolton & Graham need a rocket to start with. Need to go into the middle and start winning the ball and some clearances. That's where it starts. The Swans have smashed us in the middle and that's opening up our defence like a can opener.
Lynch needs lead hard and play in front.
Our small forwards need to be front and square to Jack or Lynch.
-
Nothing has changed since half-time. Swans clearance and then about 3 brainfades with the ball in hand plus a stupid 50 gift the Swans a goal.
-
Lynch good contested mark and goal :gotigers.
Rich 5.6-36
Syd 11.10-76
-
We're making Hickey look like Simon Madden ::).
-
That was our best passage of the day out of defence. Actually hit all our targets going forward.
Lynch misses the set shot though :P.
-
DONT THINK! DOOOO!
-
Something is off in defence today. Not picking up dangerous players ahead of the ball.
-
Lynch made up for his airy handball.
Rich 6.7-43
Syd 12.11-83
-
That was a clear mark to Nank. Umps wearing red and white.
-
Where's our forward structure?
-
Can we sub Caddy out. Tired of his arrogant stupid act.
-
Miss are walking around while Swans players job past to create options everywhere.
-
Only positive is we don't like Round 3. Got pumped the last 3 years in a row. GWS in 2019, Hawks last year and now the Swans today :P.
Aarts goal.
51 - 101
-
Carrying few to many last 3 weeks no team work or much effort relying on a few to lift us today.
-
Can we sub Caddy out. Tired of his arrogant stupid act.
Should call the press conference and announce his retirement tomorrow.
-
3/4 time
Richmond 1.3 4.6 7.9-51
Sydney 2.5 11.10 15.12-102
Goals: George 2, Lynch 2, Riewoldt, Edwards, Aarts.
-
Carrying few to many last 3 weeks no team work or much effort relying on a few to lift us today.
Yep. Got away with it against ordinary sides like the Blues and Hawks but not today. Swans are on and we're not.
We've got a tough month ahead of us too beginning with Port away next week.
-
No excuses as we've been lazy, unaccountable and woeful but geez I hope ump #4 never umpires another game of ours again.
-
Blew this one at the selection table, couple of mids short.
-
I don't think I've seen us lazily choose the wrong option as much as we have today. Baker has had an ordinary start to the year.
Rioli gets one back.
57 - 108
-
How is that not 50 against Reid.
-
And the umpire pays a free against McIntosh in that contest... what a f@cking disgrace of a decision.
-
Now Kmac has been knocked out (hope he is okay). So he won't play next week either.
-
How is that not 50 against Reid.
Our pathetic-ness has hidden a woeful display of umpiring.
-
Now Kmac has been knocked out (hope he is okay). So he won't play next week either.
And they paid a free against Kamdyn ::)
-
Check the stats, not sure we all turned up today, hard to be team when only half are putting their hand up
-
That sums up Bolts day. He's had a mare. Mind you he's had plenty of mates.
-
George's kick floats over the top to Lynch for his 3rd.
64 - 109
-
OMG we got a free in our F50. Goal to Rioli.
71 - 109
-
Outs: Prestia, Macintosh, Aarts, Caddy, Egg
In: Vlaustin, Collier-Dawkins, Ross, Ralphsmith, Dow.
-
Blow the siren anyway , mercy rule
-
Final Score
Richmond 1.3 4.6 7.9 10.12-72
Sydney 2.5 10.10 15.12 17.15-117
Goals: Lynch 3, Castagna 2, Riewoldt, Edwards, Aarts, Rioli.
Well that was crap! :P
-
Yes it was but we'll beat them in the finals.
-
Dimma and the assistant coaches still sitting in the box discussing the game.
-
No Leppitsch no Richmond. :rollin
-
Outs: Prestia, Macintosh, Aarts, Caddy, Egg
In: Vlaustin, Collier-Dawkins, Ross, Ralphsmith, Dow.
A lot of passengers today. Bolton the worst game he's ever played for us.
Nankervis was outplayed by Hickey.
Cotchin was down today. Alot of passengers.
Sydney were very very good.
-
Smashed all over the ground today by a very good side. The backs looked unsure especially Grimes and Broad. Cant win them all but in saying that, it was a poor performance.

https://www.afl.com.au/matches/3000#player-stats
-
Just an embarrassing performance.
Umpiring was diabolical but that doesn't excuse the non competitive nature of our effort, or more to the point lack of effort
-
Tells the story, their midfield destroyed ours
Running backs and forwards with more possies than our midfield, whilst theirs had so many more than anyone else
-
We have a tough stretch coming up and we could easily be 2-5 after 7 rounds. But, a kick a in the pants now might be just what we need to get us by.
I worry what our back line looks like in 12 months. We need to find some quality replacements for Houli, Astbury and Grines in the not too distant future.
-
Outs: Prestia, Macintosh, Aarts, Caddy, Egg
In: Vlaustin, Collier-Dawkins, Ross, Ralphsmith, Dow.
Thought Caddy was one of our better players myself (admittedly I tuned in half way through Q1 and didn't bother watching Q4 at all, what with housework to do etc).
Aarts hardly a footballers AH but twice the kahunas of Rioli.
-
Full credit to the Swans, from the start they simply wanted it more
-
Full credit to the Swans, from the start they simply wanted it more
Their kids are also absurdly good. Wick and Warner fmd
-
Tells the story, their midfield destroyed ours
Running backs and forwards with more possies than our midfield, whilst theirs had so many more than anyone else
Yep we got smashed all over the park :help.
We didn't turn up to play. We were off from the start playing like U10s missing simple disposals and marks and making the wrong decision with nearly every possie. We were/are still in practice match mode whereas the Swans turned up like it was final. They simply out-worked and out-pressured us. Our defence hung in for a quarter and a half (Swans missed a number of chances early) but eventually their aim straightened and the dam wall broke.
If we get to play the Swans later on in the year it will be interesting to see how we counter their quick short passing game. We set up defensively for long balls and they picked off free teammates with ease. They sliced and diced us and defensive structure was all at sea. We were zoning off despite our midfield being pumped when we needed to man-up and be accountable to a direct opponent.
-
claw obviously out celebrating... :shh
-
Why's there still no stat for missed tackles in this day & age? Love to know what ours were not just today but over the first three rounds...in particular those of Lambert, Baker, Rioli, McIntosh, Edwards & Aarts....... :shh
-
Not mentioning our poor forward entries but our midfield and defensive structure were shambolic today. Defensive zone was being torn to shreds with the swans lowering their eyes and finding the short option. I mean I know our zone is normally unbeatable but on days like today were it’s just not working some old fashioned man on man wouldn’t hurt. And would it have killed one of our mids to stand defensive side of the square at centre bounces. Lost count at how many times the swans just took it straight from the bounce and waltzed it inside 50 unopposed.
Anyway let’s not overreact. Like i said better to build form as the season progresses (2017, 2019, 2020) then come out firing to start the season and then fade out when it matters (2018). Also an early season spanking has served us well over the past few seasons. Big opportunity to bounce back next week.
-

Good observation. We are not stickibg tackles.

The one handed tackles were back in full display. Those names were the main culprits

Round 3 Report Card
Max Laughton, Matt Balmer, David Zita and Ben Waterworth
Foxsports
5 April 2021
RICHMOND
The Tigers received a mighty shock at the MCG when a young Sydney line-up turned it on. Damien Hardwick’s team was defeated by 45-points and was powerless to stop the Swans right throughout the contest. It was the first time Richmond looked all at sea in the defensive half as Sydney cut through with ease to reach three figures.
In the votes
Not too many Tigers players could be considered in the best players given it was largely a one-way contest. Liam Baker and Jayden Short both had over 20 touches and fought hard in a backline that was peppered throughout the day. Up forward Tom Lynch slotted 3.3, while Jason Castagna had two majors from 17 disposals.
Room for improvement
The Tigers will go back to the drawing board and while it can be written off as their annual blowout, Hardwick will be disappointed in the way Sydney was able to cut through the backline. A number of changes are likely to be made with uncharacteristic mistakes occurring.

Gerard Healy, Jonathan Brown, Nick Riewoldt & Garry Lyon discussing us on 'On The Couch' tonight:
How the 'Sydney Swarm' stifled Richmond
Watch here: https://www.foxsports.com.au/video/afl/on-the-couch/how-the-sydney-swarm-stifled-richmond!799516
The first three examples had nothing to do with Sydney's defence or pressure ::). All were either basic skill errors and/or poor decision making by us when we had open options.
(i) Kick inside F50 misses Dusty by 10m over his head and goes OOTF. There was also a free Tiger inboard 40m out from goal which was the better option.
(ii) Kick off HB goes wide to the boundary option when there was a free teammate in board running forward onto the logo.
In any case, the next kick misses its target by 10m and bounces between three Tigers allowing the Swan defenders in.
nb. The Swan defender gets tackled and is spun around 540 degrees which should be HTB. Another example of the crap umpiring we copped all day :thumbsdown.
(iii) Kick out of D50 should have gone wider toward the boundary where the free Tiger teammate was running towards with free space ahead of him. The kick however is too narrow by 20m and goes straight to Dawson for the turnover.
ps. Our F50 entries have been poor in all three matches so far. We just got away with it against crap sides like Carlton and Hawthorn. The Swans were the first this year to make us pay for our slop.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Example @ 4.15 min:
This demonstrated that we were defensively asleep and that our workrate off the ball was pitiful. Our mids and half-forwards failed to run hard defensively to check the Swan runs.
- After the Swans player in the BP chips to a teammate at HB, he runs on but Aarts fails to stick with him tightly and remains 10m behind as the play carries on.
- Then Lambert fails to follow the Swan mid running from the centre corridor to the HFF where the ball ends up. Graham initially points to Lambert to pick the Swan mid up but Lambert thinks Graham will pick him up and both are left just minding space 20m off the kicker in the zone defence.
- Astbury allows his Swan forward opponent to run into space 40m off him.
- We actually get the kick we want from Sydney which is a long down the line kick to their HFF (towards Astbury's man).
- Balta leaves his man and runs back to spoil. Good .... this is where we should have had the numbers and won the turnover.
- But we don't! Astbury is too far away from his man and thus too late to get to the contest to help Balta and Dave ends up in no man's land.
- Balta's man who is now free front and centre then gathers the ball, hands to what should be Lambert/Graham's man who dishes it off (before Graham can stop him) to what is Aarts' man running past for the easy overlap chip to Papley and then Wicks inside the Swans' F50.
ps. I hope this makes some sense if you watch the vision a few times and pause it at each possession.
All up it's just slack team defence as well as being unaccountable to an opponent that is moving into a threatening and impacting position on the ground :banghead.
--------------------------------------------------
The last examples are a horror show for Bakes but they also illustrate that our mids and other half-backs did not protect our defensive side at centrebounces. You could have driven a road train of B-doubles through there there was so much open ground between the centre circle and the Swans' F50 :facepalm.
The only good news is all these examples above are fixable without any major change to our gameplan. Just requires a return to AFL standard workrate and intensity, cutting out the slack dumb stuff and executing basic skills. Fix the fundamentals and the rest will take care of itself.

ONE POSITIVE AND ONE NEGATIVE FROM YOUR CLUB'S ROUND 3 PERFORMANCE

Positive: Chance to bounce back swiftly
The Tigers were cast aside by Sydney at the MCG on Saturday but thankfully they get the chance to bounce back quickly.
This Friday night they take on Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval in what presents a major test against a quality side also coming off a humbling defeat.
Damien Hardwick often describes a loss as a chance to learn and grow and that is exactly the case here with Richmond who will be keen to hit back on the road in a bid to avoid going 2-2.
It was Richmond’s third Round 3 defeat in as many years, indicating that it certainly isn’t panic stations.
Negative: Uncharacteristic performance
The performance against Sydney was quite out of character for a Richmond side.
Some players appeared lazy and were waiting for their teammates to do the hard work, which certainly is not a great habit. Just last week we were praising the Tigers for their hunger despite all the recent success, but this week the Swans were much more 'Richmond-like' and showed them up all over the park.
Hardwick said of the loss: “The score flattered us. It felt like it was a 10-goal loss. I thought they killed us in every facet of the game.”
Tigers fans will be hoping that sort of subpar display is merely just a one-off.

No surprise but Dimma said we made 38 unforced turnovers :help. Just kills you both offensively and defensively.
