Lance Franklin is no certainty to take on the Tigers this week.

The Tigers lead the league in inside 50s, but haven’t been able to convert that to scores the same way Port and Sydney have. Changkuoth Jiath and Blake Hardwick had a field day cutting them off on Sunday. They’ll have to find a way around Tom McCartin this week, who has started the season well.

RICHMOND v SYDNEY SWANS (Tom Derickx Cup)

Saturday April 3, 1.45pm at MCG

How to watch on Fox Footy: Channel 504 from 12pm, with the Saturday Countdown team of Anthony Hudson, Dermott Brereton and David King before Sarah Jones, Mark Howard, Garry Lyon, Jonathan Brown and Cameron Mooney call the action.

Tigers’ burning question: Is this a banana peel game for them?

It’s more than that. It’s a genuine challenge — and especially when you consider how the Tigers have struggled to shake the Swans in past meetings. Richmond hasn’t exactly dominated against Sydney in recent years, with eight-point, 22-point and 26-point wins in their last three meetings, plus a nine-point loss back in 2017. And those games were all before Sydney coach John Longmire implemented this new, enthralling gamestyle and unleashed one of the best groups of young guns in the AFL. The tactical battle will be fascinating as to whether the Swans will be prepared to take on the disciplined Tigers structure. If they do, you know Richmond will counter by applying that quintessential defensive pressure that has undone so many teams in the past four years.

Swans’ burning question: Who goes to Dusty?

The logical choice would be Goerge Hewett, who’s been Sydney’s renowned run-with player for many years. But as many pundits have pointed out, Dustin Martin is now an AFL ‘striker’ — a powerful, physical player that does maximum damage in the forward half, often within ‘striking’ distance of goal. It led to triple premiership Lion Justin Leppitsch to throw up “a left-field” suggestion on SEN’s Whateley this week for the Swans to throw at Martin: Dane Rampe. Leppitsch said Martin would be “too classy” for Hewett and Rampe, An All-Australian and Swans club champion, would have the capabilities to curtail the Tigers superstar inside forward 50. It would mean sending Sam Reid into defence to help Tom McCartin tackle Tigers duo Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt and free up Rampe on Martin, but Leppitsch said it’d be worthwhile, telling SEN: ““I think he’d be elite on Dusty in the forward 50. No one can score on Rampe, although Taylor Walker did OK (in Round 2), but he’d be better on Martin than anyone else they’ve got.”

Fox Footy expert tipsters’ verdict: Richmond 14 — Sydney Swans 1
