Tells the story, their midfield destroyed ours
Running backs and forwards with more possies  than our midfield, whilst theirs had so many more than anyone else
Yep we got smashed all over the park  :help.

We didn't turn up to play. We were off from the start playing like U10s missing simple disposals and marks and making the wrong decision with nearly every possie. We were/are still in practice match mode whereas the Swans turned up like it was final. They simply out-worked and out-pressured us. Our defence hung in for a quarter and a half (Swans missed a number of chances early) but eventually their aim straightened and the dam wall broke.

If we get to play the Swans later on in the year it will be interesting to see how we counter their quick short passing game. We set up defensively for long balls and they picked off free teammates with ease. They sliced and diced us and defensive structure was all at sea. We were zoning off despite our midfield being pumped when we needed to man-up and be accountable to a direct opponent.

Why's there still no stat for missed tackles in this day & age? Love to know what ours were not just today but over the first three rounds...in particular those of Lambert, Baker, Rioli, McIntosh, Edwards & Aarts....... :shh

Not mentioning our poor forward entries but our midfield and defensive structure were shambolic today. Defensive zone was being torn to shreds with the swans lowering their eyes and finding the short option. I mean I know our zone is normally unbeatable but on days like today were it’s just not working some old fashioned man on man wouldn’t hurt. And would it have killed one of our mids to stand defensive side of the square at centre bounces. Lost count at how many times the swans just took it straight from the bounce and waltzed it inside 50 unopposed.

Anyway let’s not overreact. Like i said better to build form as the season progresses (2017, 2019, 2020) then come out firing to start the season and then fade out when it matters (2018). Also an early season spanking has served us well over the past few seasons. Big opportunity to bounce back next week.

The one handed tackles were back in full display. Those names were the main culprits

Round 3 Report Card

Max Laughton, Matt Balmer, David Zita and Ben Waterworth
Foxsports
5 April 2021

RICHMOND

The Tigers received a mighty shock at the MCG when a young Sydney line-up turned it on. Damien Hardwick’s team was defeated by 45-points and was powerless to stop the Swans right throughout the contest. It was the first time Richmond looked all at sea in the defensive half as Sydney cut through with ease to reach three figures.

In the votes

Not too many Tigers players could be considered in the best players given it was largely a one-way contest. Liam Baker and Jayden Short both had over 20 touches and fought hard in a backline that was peppered throughout the day. Up forward Tom Lynch slotted 3.3, while Jason Castagna had two majors from 17 disposals.

Room for improvement

The Tigers will go back to the drawing board and while it can be written off as their annual blowout, Hardwick will be disappointed in the way Sydney was able to cut through the backline. A number of changes are likely to be made with uncharacteristic mistakes occurring.

The first three examples had nothing to do with Sydney's defence or pressure  ::). All were either basic skill errors and/or poor decision making by us when we had open options.

(i) Kick inside F50 misses Dusty by 10m over his head and goes OOTF. There was also a free Tiger inboard 40m out from goal which was the better option.

(ii) Kick off HB goes wide to the boundary option when there was a free teammate in board running forward onto the logo.
In any case, the next kick misses its target by 10m and bounces between three Tigers allowing the Swan defenders in.
nb. The Swan defender gets tackled and is spun around 540 degrees which should be HTB. Another example of the crap umpiring we copped all day  :thumbsdown.

(iii) Kick out of D50 should have gone wider toward the boundary where the free Tiger teammate was running towards with free space ahead of him. The kick however is too narrow by 20m and goes straight to Dawson for the turnover.

ps. Our F50 entries have been poor in all three matches so far. We just got away with it against crap sides like Carlton and Hawthorn. The Swans were the first this year to make us pay for our slop.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Example @ 4.15 min:

This demonstrated that we were defensively asleep and that our workrate off the ball was pitiful. Our mids and half-forwards failed to run hard defensively to check the Swan runs.

- After the Swans player in the BP chips to a teammate at HB, he runs on but Aarts fails to stick with him tightly and remains 10m behind as the play carries on.

- Then Lambert fails to follow the Swan mid running from the centre corridor to the HFF where the ball ends up. Graham initially points to Lambert to pick the Swan mid up but Lambert thinks Graham will pick him up and both are left just minding space 20m off the kicker in the zone defence.

- Astbury allows his Swan forward opponent to run into space 40m off him.

- We actually get the kick we want from Sydney which is a long down the line kick to their HFF (towards Astbury's man).

- Balta leaves his man and runs back to spoil. Good .... this is where we should have had the numbers and won the turnover.

- But we don't! Astbury is too far away from his man and thus too late to get to the contest to help Balta and Dave ends up in no man's land.

- Balta's man who is now free front and centre then gathers the ball, hands to what should be Lambert/Graham's man who dishes it off (before Graham can stop him) to what is Aarts' man running past for the easy overlap chip to Papley and then Wicks inside the Swans' F50.

ps. I hope this makes some sense if you watch the vision a few times and pause it at each possession.

All up it's just slack team defence as well as being unaccountable to an opponent that is moving into a threatening and impacting position on the ground  :banghead.

--------------------------------------------------

The last examples are a horror show for Bakes but they also illustrate that our mids and other half-backs did not protect our defensive side at centrebounces. You could have driven a road train of B-doubles through there there was so much open ground between the centre circle and the Swans' F50 :facepalm.

The only good news is all these examples above are fixable without any major change to our gameplan. Just requires a return to AFL standard workrate and intensity, cutting out the slack dumb stuff and executing basic skills. Fix the fundamentals and the rest will take care of itself.

ONE POSITIVE AND ONE NEGATIVE FROM YOUR CLUB'S ROUND 3 PERFORMANCE

Andrew Slevison
SEN
6 April 2021

RICHMOND

Positive: Chance to bounce back swiftly

The Tigers were cast aside by Sydney at the MCG on Saturday but thankfully they get the chance to bounce back quickly.

This Friday night they take on Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval in what presents a major test against a quality side also coming off a humbling defeat.

Damien Hardwick often describes a loss as a chance to learn and grow and that is exactly the case here with Richmond who will be keen to hit back on the road in a bid to avoid going 2-2.

It was Richmond’s third Round 3 defeat in as many years, indicating that it certainly isn’t panic stations.

Negative: Uncharacteristic performance

The performance against Sydney was quite out of character for a Richmond side.

Some players appeared lazy and were waiting for their teammates to do the hard work, which certainly is not a great habit. Just last week we were praising the Tigers for their hunger despite all the recent success, but this week the Swans were much more 'Richmond-like' and showed them up all over the park.

Hardwick said of the loss: “The score flattered us. It felt like it was a 10-goal loss. I thought they killed us in every facet of the game.”

Tigers fans will be hoping that sort of subpar display is merely just a one-off.

No surprise but Dimma said we made 38 unforced turnovers  :help. Just kills you both offensively and defensively.
