AFL Round 5
St Kilda vs RICHMOND
Thursday, 15 April 2021 @ Marvel Stadium
Start time: 7:20 PM

Thanks to the Eagles caving today, the Saints will now have their confidence up and about.
For us it's about fixing up what isn't working so far this year and cost us the game against Port - (i) our contested footy (-35 vs Port) and clearances (-12) in the midfield and (ii) our forward line (butchering entries & lack of pressure at ground level). Our team pressure still isn't at the level we need it too be across four quarters (Saints' pressure rating was 240 in the last quarter today by the way). Allow St Kilda freedom to run and overlap and it will be a repeat of round 4 last year.
-
A little worried with our next 4 games. 50/50 each one.
If we can be 4/4 I'd be happy

Need to win at least one of our next 3 at a minimum. Saints (especially at Docklands), Dees and Dogs are all up and about, so it won't be easy. Could easily lose all three on our current up and down form. We've got lots of areas to fix up (contested footy, clearances & midfield-forward connection).

Never a good time to play Richmond: Butler
St Kilda forward Dan Butler says there is never a good time to face his old club Richmond, as the two sides prepare to do battle in a mouth-watering Thursday night contest.
Since winning their first of three premierships of a run in 2017, the Tigers have only lost three games in a row once, but face the Saints off the back of two defeats against Sydney and Port Adelaide.
Butler, who kicked 30 goals for Richmond in that flag-winning year, knows all too well how difficult it is to beat the Tigers over four quarters.
“I don’t think there is ever a good time to get the Tigers,” Butler said with a smile.
“I just know they are hunting for a win and so are we, so I think it will be a pretty good battle.”
...
Ruckman Rowan Marshall remains in doubt for the game after injuring his foot late in the first half against West Coast.

Marshall out would be handy.

Injury-prone St Kilda midfielder Zak Jones may miss the club’s Thursday night date with Richmond, while ruckman Rowan Marshall is also in doubt for the clash.

It's a big week for…
Richmond: The Tigers are hardly likely to panic after two straight defeats, but if we’ve learned anything from the books and documentaries about the club in recent years is that hard questions will be asked of the players and coaches and key aspects of the ‘Richmond’ process will be examined. They were exposed by St Kilda’s speed across the ground in the corresponding game last year. Sadly, this is the last Thursday night game for some time, but it shapes as a good one.

Ratten expected injury-prone midfielder Zak Jones and ruckman Rowan Marshall (plantar fascia) to play - bar any late hiccups - with Luke Dunstan and Paul Hunter on standby.
St Kilda will consider sending a hard tag to Dustin Martin in a bid to quell the Richmond superstar's influence.
"... There might be (a hard tag). He's (Seb Ross is) one that's done it before."

Not really surprising that team pressure and winning the contested footy is going to determine the winner tonight. We will need big games from Bolts & Graham to help Cotch, Sheds and Dusty in the guts. We've missed Prestia big time in there the past two weeks.

Again simple equation for us we we're better last week but we need a team effort, intensity and pressure and one thing annoying me is school boy mistakes and free kicks we need to slow it down and use footy smarts.Have to breake even in clearances and contested footy still puzzling our we led this all finals in 2020 and now same issue I know Prestia a big loss.
-
When we do get the ball and go forward I'm hoping to see our big forward leading and smashing packs bringing the ball to ground or marking in space.

LATE CHANGES
St Kilda: Rowan Marshall (foot) replaced in selected side by Paul Hunter, Zak Jones (soreness) replaced in selected side by Luke Dunstan
Richmond: Nil

Edit: Sorry Willy & WP. Didn't see you posted this in the other thread :thumbsup.
-
Marshall is a big out for the Saints. Need to make the most of it.
Bring the pressure and be harder at the footy Tiges :pray.
-
Goal Graham :gotigers
Rich 1.0-6
StK 0.0-0
-
Sloppy. Missed handball going backwards and Higgins gets the free. Thankfully misses.
6 - 1
-
Wish Lynch would play in front. He's too big and for his opponent so take away the spoil by playing in front.
Grimes at F50 :o to the goalsquare where Lynch marks. Goal :gotigers.
Rich 2.0-12
StK 0.1-1
-
Short terrible kick turns it over. Gifts the Saints a goal against the run of play :banghead.
12 - 7
-
Sloppy again. Making dumb basic skill errors. Our own worst enemy so far.
-
Baker showing our small forwards where to be at the fall of the ball and wins the HTB free 25 out. Misses though :P.
13 - 7
-
Soft effort on the wing by Bolts there.
Soft free to Membrey too. We don't get those frees ::). Thankfully hits the post.
13 - 8
-
Rioli against two Saints wins the HTB free 25 out. Same spot as Baker before. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 3.1-19
StK 1.2-8
-
Our forward entries are still ordinary but our forward pressure is better tonight.
Panicky kick by a Saint defender lands in Kmac's arms. His shot goes across the face. Sheds gathers but his snap misses.
20 - 8
-
Soft goal to the Saints. 3 Tigers against King at HB and we give away the free :facepalm.
20 - 14
-
Can we actually win a centre clearance Tiges? ::)
Got to love how the chopping of the arms is only at one end of the ground.
20 - 20
Ball has spent more time in our forward half so far but scores are level :banghead.
-
Some soft 50/50 contest efforts out there. Lucky King misses.
20 - 21
-
No frees for our forwards ::).
Aarts snap under pressure misses.
21 all.
-
Jack Graham......... Lift your game.
-
These blokes just drop the footy cold in tackles and it’s okay on.
Our forward line is terrible. Too many 1 handed errors across the ground. Very sloppy disposals.
-
Saints leading 45 frees to 3 .... here we go again .... :P
-
Quarter time
Richmond 3.3-21
St Kilda 3.4-22
Goals: Lynch, Rioli, Graham.
Had all the play for the first 15 mins but didn't put it on the scoreboard. Our forward entries are again terrible and just high bombs in hope to Jack and Lynch. Saints are flooding back and then getting us with the sucker punch on the counter. We're also not making the most of Nank in the ruck against their inexperienced ruckman. St Kilda started to get on top in the contested footy late in the quarter. We're just not jelling. Silly schoolboy errors and mixed efforts.
As for the umps ::).
-
dont want to sound predictable...but these umpires are simply unbelievably crap...crap frees to King and Lonie...no dropping the ball given at CHF 2 minutes earlier...GTF outta here
-
Our guys get called out if we play for a free, every other stuffing team does it and no-one mentions anything
-
Nank stop tapping it to Saint mids.
Better pass by Graham to Jack on the lead. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 4.3-27
StK 3.4-22
-
Dusty around the neck = no free ::).
-
Hit your targets Tiges :banghead.
-
They are scoring off our mistakes.
27 - 23
-
Saints player throws it and they get the free ::).
-
LOL. Pickett just pulls our some brilliance out of nowhere. Dodges and then slams one home off one step from 50 :gotigers.
Rich 5.3-33
StK 3.5-23
-
What happened to Bolton there? Looked like his leg just froze up and he fell over. Turnover gifts the Saints another soft goal :banghead.
-
Higgins could barely kick 30m for us, and not accurately either
-
Bolton slipped when getting ready to leap and grabbed his hammy. Still out there and looks ok
-
Thanks Buddy.
Aarts jumper grabbed twice and no free ::).
-
Lonie is a cheat
-
One of Jack or Lynch needed to lead up to Graham then.
34 - 29
-
Lonie is a cheat
Yep. Dumb umps falling for his diving and dropping the ball :banghead.
-
LEAD FIR THE MARK AND GET IN FRONT YOU LAZY prick! :banghead :banghead
-
Good work by Aarts. George goal :gotigers. Don't want to mozz him but his goalkicking has been better this year.
Rich 6.4-40
StK 4.5-29
-
We are so sloppy by hand tonight. Missing so many targets.
-
Dumb bloody footy :banghead. Two fumbles by Kmac and Graham and then Dusty why handball to a stationary Nank :huh.
-
It's not pretty.
Jack brings it down in the contest and Graham crumbs a goal :gotigers.
Rich 7.4-46
StK 4.5-29
-
This game is so frustrating to watch. Should be smashing them but we're stuffing up basic schooboy stuff :facepalm. 3-vs-1 and we stuff it up :facepalm.
Lynch point.
47 - 29
-
Dropping sitters and missing open targets by hand and foot :facepalm.
48 - 29
-
Cotch... :huh
Turnover after turnover
-
We just forced it forward there. Lambert over the top to Lynch on his own. Goal :gotigers.
54 - 29
-
Half-time
Richmond 3.3 8.6-54
St Kilda 3.4 4.5-29
Goals: Lynch 2, Graham 2, Riewoldt, Pickett, Rioli, Castagna.
Bizarre and frustrating quarter of footy. We dished up slop but we were all over them at the same time and lead by 25 points. I guess that means our defensive structures are working well but we're shooting ourselves in the foot offensively a lot of time :P.
-
Frees are 7-15 at the half.
-
Frees are 7-15 at the half.
Dominated play that quarter yet the umps favouring the opposition that is chasing our tail ::).
-
If that's not deliberate what is ::).
-
Cotch to Jack 35 out. Misses.
55 - 29
-
Freakish! Class crumbing and snap by Sheds :bow :gotigers.
Rich 9.7-61
StK 4.5-29
-
Dusty kicks another :gotigers.
Rich 10.7-67
StK 4.5-29
-
We are just going at about 60% and we are still smashing them
-
Graham long and Jack takes the speckie 35 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 11.7-73
StK 4.5-29
-
Bolt muffs his left foot snap. Point.
74 - 29
-
These umps ::). When we're head over the ball it isn't a free.
-
These umps... inventing sh*t at every chance.
-
Dumb play. The switch wasn't on.
That's not 15 btw :huh. A soft goal to them :banghead.
-
Bloody switching off. Another soft goal :banghead.
74 - 41
-
How about chopping the arms on Broad?
-
LOL @ Pickett in the ruck then.
Sheds to finally to a leading Lynch. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 12.8-80
StK 6.5-41
-
George goal :gotigers.
Well we got those two goals back quickly.
Rich 13.8-86
StK 6.5-41
-
We've had 19 of the last 20 clearances. Makes a difference when you win the footy in the middle.
-
Pickett has been very good tonight.
-
Jake you've got to know you limitations.
Rioli high to the hot spot and Bolton marks and goals anyway :gotigers.
Rich 14.9-93
StK 6.5-41
-
Aartz needs a spell in the 2nds.
-
St Kilda player nailed and drops it then we get tackled and it's a throw against us ::).
-
Good transition from defence. Ends up with Lambert who chips to Rioli who marks it after falling to his knees. Goal! :gotigers
7th goal for the qtr.
Rich 15.9-99
StK 6.6-42
-
Grimes with 15 secs left runs to 55 and George marks on the siren. Hits the post.
3/4 time
Richmond 3.3 8.6 15.12-102
St Kilda 3.4 4.5 6.6-42
Goals: Lynch 3, Riewoldt 2, Castagna 2, Graham 2, Rioli 2, Bolton, Edwards, Martin, Pickett.
Unlike the 2nd qtr, we were finally cleaner, used the ball better going inside F50 and made the most of our domination.
-
Sheds has killed it tonight :bow.
-
Jack gets the HTB free. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 16.13-109
StK 6.6-42
-
The media have gone quiet about us letting Butler go. Done nothing this year.
-
How soft have the frees the Saints got tonight ::).
-
Junk time. Too much cute stuff. Back to slop.
-
Lonie deliberately diving again for another free ::).
109 - 48
-
We have to play touch footy when the opposition have the pill.
-
Jack marks and goals :gotigers.
Rich 17.13-115
StK 7.6-48
-
Great kick Jack. His 5th :gotigers.
Rich 18.13-121
StK 7.6-48
-
Graham 50m and goals :gotigers.
Rich 19.13-127
StK 7.6-48
-
Bolton to Aarts 30 out. Goal :gotigers.
Rich 20.13-133
StK 7.6-48
-
Jack was too unselfish then trying to pass it to Nank. Should have gone for it.
-
Really good team win tonight. Haven’t taken the foot off the pedal all night. Felt like we had a point to prove and certainly made it.
-
Won by 86 pts :gotigers.

Dusty - "Just another game" :snidegrin.

Dimma's first win over Ratten as coach.
Score after 1/4 time: 17.11-113 to 4.2-26. That's a hammering.
Our % jumped up by 22. We now sit 4th with 124%.
Biggest win over the Saints since 1985.
Our highest score since Round 16, 2019 vs Gold Coast.
Pleasantly surprised. Didn't see that coming given the form we were in at this time of the year. First half was still sloppy but that 3rd quarter was the first time this year we've clicked into gear. Totally made the Saints a rabble. I was worried coming into the game about us being one mid short but we smashed them in the contested footy, clearances and all over the park for that matter. Needed huge games from Bolts and Graham in the middle and they delivered. Connection between mids and forwards and our forward-half pressure was back too. Great and important win, Tiges! :clapping.
-
I think we won last years final too MT :rollin
Jack Graham was awesome future captain.
Nank was dominant
Baker was very good.
Jack is looking great.
Dusty just cruising but dominant.
Bolton and Edwards just excellent in close and clearance machines.
Cotchin was brilliant early and set the tone.
Pickett’s best game I’ve seen him play.
I think a very very even contribution from all players.
Our mids came to play.
It’s good to be winning again :gotigers
-
I think we won last years final too MT :rollin
Forgot about that :lol.
I was listening to the Ch 7 commentary and didn't question it when they said it. They must have meant Dimma's first win over Ratten in a H/A game.

Really important win. We have a really tough draw over next couple of weeks and this was a must win. Pressure from the beginning was a standout. As Dima recognized Saints missing a few so important not to get carried away with win.
-

A really pointless stat by channel seven particularly given that Ratten only started coaching St Kilda in September 2019 and the comment by channel 7 should have been qualified to Dimma's first win over Ratten in a H/A game whilst Ratten has been coach of St Kilda.

Yep, it was basically all about Carlton beating Richmond when Hardwick took over as a bottom 4 side and the Blues had thrown their sink (& salary cap cheating) at Judd + tanked for Kreuzer.
peeweak stat.
Look at the flags MF.
-
We were also missing a few in Prestia and Vaustin.
-
I thought McIntosh provided a lot of options, run and drive, we miss him when he is not in the team, miss the mo tho :lol
-
I loved seeing Baker up the ground a bit more last night and it suits him. The fast ball inside 50 doesn't suit him but last night he was excellent.

"UNBELIEVABLE" TIGERS PROVIDE TIMELY REMINDER OF THEIR GREATNESS
Speaking on SEN Breakfast, Garry Lyon said it was Richmond at their absolute best.
“The Richmond Football Club, having dropped the last two games, just came out and said now is a good time to remind the rest of the competition just how great a football team we are,” Lyon said.
“It was the team element that struck me.
“I know the Saints are going to be the story, I know their performance is going to be dissected – and as it should – but for me it was as much about Richmond last night.
“They were unbelievable. This was Richmond at their absolute smothering, high intensity, pressure best.”

An Eagles fan's view:
Richmond showed a definite shift in their tactics against St Kilda.
After opening the season with tackles inside 50 counts of 6, 7, 5 and 10 they had 18 tonight against the Saints - you have to go back almost two years to the day (Round 5, 2019) for a time that the Tigers surpassed that figure.
Richmond ranked last in the competition for tackles inside 50 and during 2020. They also accordingly came in lowest for the proportion of tackles that were committed inside 50 at 14.3%.
Their performance tonight of 18 of a total of 68 is 26.5%.
During 2017, the Tigers fronted the competition in both of these areas, averaging 14.3 tackles inside 50 per game, proportionally 20.5% of their total tackles.
Having been unable to slow down opposing ball movement and create turnovers from the defensive trap on the wing as a result of the new rule, Richmond it appears have gone back to the future with the full-field press as a means of disrupting the release kick from the opposition defence that has caused problems for them.
Ironically it would now seem that a rule change invoked to create more ball movement transition from defence to attack will instead lead to a renewed chapter of forward pressing tactics from coaches.

AFL Report Card: Round 5
Ben Waterworth, David Zita, Max Laughton and Matt Balmer
Foxsports
19 April 2021
RICHMOND
Doubt the Tigers at your own peril. They proved on Thursday night that back-to-back losses was no cause for alarm, dismantling the Saints in typical Tigers fashion. Their brand was flawless and they reaffirmed their credentials … not that they needed to.
In the votes
Dustin Martin had 34 touches but it was Jack Riewoldt who stole the show with 5.3 while Tom Lynch and Jack Graham chipped in with three each. Shane Edwards and Shai Bolton were great along with Toby Nankervis to name just a few of the notable performers.
Room for improvement
Not much. The Saints threatened to make it a contest in the first quarter and a bit but from that point on the Tigers never looked like losing.

ONE POSITIVE AND ONE NEGATIVE FROM YOUR CLUB'S ROUND 5 PERFORMANCE
Andrew Slevison
SEN
19 April 2021
RICHMOND
Positive: Back in a big way as Jacks star
The Tigers were superb in last Thursday’s 86-point demolition job of the Saints.
After going close against the Power in Adelaide following a smacking at the hands of Sydney, Damien Hardwick’s side really got to work at Marvel Stadium in a crushing display.
While their opponents were well below their best, Richmond ensured a massive percentage booster with a ruthless performance which delivered their biggest score since 2019.
The respective games of Jack Riewoldt, with five goals and eight marks, and Jack Graham, with three goals, 17 touches and 12 tackles, stood out.
Tony Nankervis, Shai Bolton, Shane Edwards and Dustin Martin were all very good too.
Negative: Let Saints in early
There isn’t much to be negative about but if you had to choose, it would be allowing the Saints back into the contest early.
The Tigers kicked the first two goals of the game before the Saints almost controlled the remainder of the quarter.
If not for missing some very kickable set shots, St Kilda might have been right in the contest, however, a five-goal second quarter by the Tigers basically put things to bed.
But after a huge win, that’s just nitpicking.

Useless stats from Round 5
Aaron Delaporte
zerohanger.com
21 April 2021
The huge turnaround by Richmond getting home by 86pts after trailing by 1pt at the opening break may sound like its close to a record but it is actually way off. The same two teams played in Rd 16 1980 with the scores at 33-43 to St Kilda at quarter time before the Tigers came over the top to win 222-70. The 152-point margin is the biggest ever recorded victory after being behind at the first break.
In what could well be the last Thursday night game of the season given the AFL has seemingly moved away from this timeslot, Jack Riewoldt set a new record for games played on Thursdays at 23 along with the record for goals on a Thursday at 48 after bagging 5.
The Tigers had a massive 260-68 Thursday games experience differential over the Saints. The 86pt thrashing is the fifth biggest seen on a Thursday and the biggest margin Riewoldt has been involved with personally on this day.
Interestingly, his biggest previous margin was his first Thursday game way back in Round 1 2009 when Richmond were beaten by Carlton by 83pts in what has since become the traditional season opener. The coach for Blues that night was none other than the now Saints coach in Brett Ratten.
