8 point game, really it is
-
Based on our R1 performance theyll flog us.
-
The Giants' strength is in their midfield which is now our weakness with the likes of Prestia and Lambert missing. It could get ugly like round 22 last year if we dish up what we did against Carlton in the 2nd and 4th quarters and GWS score as efficiently as they are doing against the Swans right now :help.
We haven't started a season 0-2 since 2012. The last time we made finals after losing the first two games of a season was way back in 1940. So it's a season defining game.
-
Hopefully we bring some pressure to the ball carrier. We’ve never been a clearance team but system and pressure. We need to force turnover and we need proper tackling.
That’s our thing! We used to be so good at teams were fumbling with implied pressure all the time we were in their heads within minutes of gif first bounce.
We need to get back to this.
I’m expecting a big change this week in this department.
1 tackle inside forward 50 isn’t what got us premierships so expecting some major improvements in this area also.
If we don’t improve on these Richmond fundamentals it’s going to be a long season.
-
Hopefully a big crowd can get us over the line
-
Have to give players credit for climbing the mountain thrice but can’t support a playing group that tackles 31 times and gives away 8 50’s.
Double the tackles and remove the 50’s and I’ll take whatever result falls our way
-

100% agree. That was the most annoying part of the Thursday.
Did you see the description of the giants/swans game? Hard nosed tackling and pressure that reminded me of how we used to play. There wasnt a player on the field who had more than a few seconds to dispose of the ball.
Giants will bring this, and if we duplicate anything close to 30 tackles we are gone.

PREVIEW: Richmond v GWS (Sunday - 3:20pm - MCG)
Lachlan Geleit
SEN
23 March 2022
The two finals contenders will be desperate for a win here after both losing their respective Round 1 fixtures.
Richmond were ran over the top of late by a revitalised Carlton outfit, while GWS were reasonable in defeat to a strong Sydney side.
This will be the first time these two sides have met at the MCG since the 2019 Grand Final, but it’s the Giants who have held sway head-to-head since they were dismantled by Richmond on that fateful day.
GWS have won two of the last three against Richmond since that encounter, also claiming the last match-up by 39 points in 2021 at Marvel Stadium.
In that clash, the Giants got it inside 50 more than their opponents and were ultimately more efficient when they got there - they’ll be hoping to go about this one in similar fashion.
One key area of dominance for the Giants in this battle is their midfield, particularly as Richmond will be without Dion Prestia.
Without Prestia, Richmond will need to bounce back from a poor on-ball performance in Round 1, that’s easier said than done against the likes of Tom Green, Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper, Josh Kelly, Callan Ward and Stephen Coniglio.
While the Tigers will back in their system to get the job done, it’s tough to see them getting close to drawing level in the centre of the ground.
Expect a strong response from Richmond, but GWS should win this game if their midfield unit controls the stoppage and wins the clearance battle.
Tip: GWS by 14 points.

Dimma said in his presser Bolton will definitely play
Will do most of today's main session but not all. Have "managed" him this week training wise so he is 100% game day

Jesse Hogan is set to return this Sunday against Richmond. Ticked off training today, just needs to pull up well tomorrow. Nick Haynes also looks ready to go again after struggling with a stomach problem in the past month. More to come @AFLcomau

THE CERTAINTIES FOR THE REST OF ROUND 2
Andrew Slevison
SEN
26 March 2022
Richmond v GWS
Balta and Bolton to combine for 3+ goals
Noah Balta started the loss to Carlton in defence, but quickly became Richmond’s most dangerous tall forward, kicking two goals.
With Jack Riewoldt sidelined, he should get even more opportunity in attack.
Shai Bolton was the Tigers’ best against the Blues with three goals and with no Dustin Martin, there will be more responsibility on him to fire in the midfield/forward role.
The Balta-Bolton duo should combine for three or more goals against the Giants.
Green to have 25+ disposals
Tom Green was immense in the Giants’ loss to Sydney in Round 1, finishing with 31 touches and eight clearances.
He is fast emerging as the club’s best young midfielder and is primed for a big match against a Richmond side that was mauled in the midfield by Carlton.
Green should rack up 25 touches as he’ll likely get his hands on the ball first at the contest. You can throw in four-plus clearances into the certainty bucket as well, especially now that Dion Prestia and Martin are out for the Tiges.
The Tigers will need to slow down Green and his midfield mates Tim Taranto, Josh Kelly, Callan Ward and Stephen Coniglio if they are any chance of winning on Sunday.

My God, with it midfield depth can we please start the Room Green to Richmond rumours again lol
-
Cant see green coming to us. We seem to be on the decline. And I have real concerns about what our recruiters have done the last 3 or 4 years. Sydney Swans they are amassing a really talented group. Florent Rowbottom etc. There recruiters have done a great job.
-
Grimes out now replaced by Big Miller
-
Grimes Out
Miller in
I like Miller but Grimes is a big out.
At least we get to see the future with Miller and Gibcus in defence.
-
I hope I'm wrong but if GWS come to play this could get ugly :-\. Even if Grimesy was playing, the problem is still our midfield especially with no two-way ballwinners in Prestia and Lambert plus no Dusty. The Giants' mids will eat us for breakfast if we are slow, soft and reactive like we were against Carlton.
In 2019-20 you would never right us off as we played with a spirit, hunger and intensity to pull off wins against the odds even with our cubs. Haven't seen that hunger and intensity as a team for 12 months irrespective of who was in the side. We're going to have to rediscover that edge in and at the contest across 4 quarters if we're going to pull off an unlikely win.
-
Looking forward to seeing how Miller performs on a Riccardi or Himmelberg.
-
It's going to be a warm day for footy.

I havent been a fan of Marlions but hes been good, tarrants been good, ralphsmith been excellent, balta also very good so far. Miller holding up well in defence and disposing the footy easily. Good quarter overall.
-
Skills still poop but we having a dip.
would like to see your favourite player in front position at some point this quarter... :shh
-
We can only hope.
-
Dow has done some decent clearance stuff. Like Hugo’s dash.
-
Unreal. I didn't have high hopes for this one
-
Going really well here.
-
Wow
Real momentum killer by cotchin.
Was absolutely nowhere near the contest. What a bloody idiot
-
Cotch just gave away a goal for nothing.

So this is what it feels like being a Bulldogs and Pies supporter?
Interesting feeling. I’m not sure how to feel about this. :rollin
-
Soldo has been very good.
Blowing out the cobwebs last week.
-
Is Nank ok?
-
He’s on now.
Dow has been solid.
-
Our forward line has looked a lot better with two talls.
-
He’s on now.
Dow has been solid.
I agree especially considering when he’s in the middle he’s on Kelly
-
Lynch really should of marked that last one I think he was looking for a free before the ball came.
-
Ok time to put the foot down boys. Put them to bed. Just don’t get complacent
-
Arts is on. Dow in the rooms. Hope it’s not too bad.
-
Terrific win.
I thought we'd get done easily today.
I thought our defence looked great. Daniel was terrific,
Tarrant was great, Miller was very solid, Gibcus some of his kicking just beautiful.Balta and Bolton are the future stars here. Dow will be very good. McIntosh and Pickett were fantastic.
-
How good was that 60m drop punt from the kick that led Bolton to an easy chesty
Great win. Pickett with some amazing efforts

X2
That is a terrific win. Reminded me of the backs to the wall win away vs Port in 2019. Brilliant.
Pressure was noticeably better. Dow in middle was massive.
Well done lads very enjoyable to watch.
-
Dow impressed me before going off looks good is he injured.
-
Good news is claw will be wuiet
-
They wont get dropped but I thought Baker was lazy today and Castagna just gets in the way, he crashed ingo iur leading forwards 3 or 4 times when they were going for marks. Id drop them both.

Backed them in and they didn't let us down.
Great win
-
Thrilled with our pressure.
Rucks were great.
Kids did well. Liked Ralph too.
-
GWS tried to bore us to death the way they chipped the footy around today. The had a plan, it didn't work and not much of a plan B. They were horrendous to watch. This is what you expect with the new rules.
I hope Dusty was watching and it gets him fired up for a return.
I actually believe his absence forced others to rise up.
The VFL boys were hard at it too.
A great day. Disappointing crowd I must say.
-
We weren't brilliant but considering our outs it was a pretty solid win in the end. We were tough & nasty today & I loved that! Ross & Dow may not be stars but they both competed hard, ran hard both ways & gave us plenty of supply from the middle. Ralphy was good with his daring runs & good ball use. Balta was brilliant today, should've bagged 6-7 today.
All up we were hard nosed & deserved the win, but I have to have a ping at the Giants today - they were utterly pathetic! They were the softest side I've watched for years. So unprepared to take the game on, so many lateral kicks to loose men who only wanted to bail out when we brought the heat.
All I can say to Leon is 'thanks for an unexpected 4 points, better luck at your next coaching job!' :whistle
-
Lots of plusses today with young players and a new system emerging.
-
Yeah I'm gonna wait and see how we fair against a side that's actually trying before declaring we're back..... :shh

Glad to be wrong. Nank and Soldo exposed their one ruck Flynn and Green (what was Leon thinking?) allowing us to dominate the clearances. Apparently we kicked 9 goals from stoppages :o.
The main thing was our hunger and intensity across 4 quarters was also back. Still things to improve on (we still butchered a few wide open F50 entries which burnt us the other way and kept GWS in the game) but if we play with that intensity most weeks then we'll play finals.
-
Nankoldo paid off yesterday...still don't think it's the way to go every week though ... :shh

Richmond’s system still stacks up
With the likes of Jack Riewoldt, Dustin Martin, Nick Vlaustin, Dion Prestia and Dylan Grimes out, not many were confident in backing Richmond against GWS at the MCG on Sunday.
While they’ve dropped back from their dominant era from 2017 to 2020, the Tigers probably deserved a little more respect from the football community after their Round 1 loss and they proved why against the Giants.
Although they were missing those big names, the Tigers controlled proceedings against a GWS side that on paper had more star power.
Their defence looks set even without Grimes, and being able to swing Noah Balta forward with Jack Riewoldt out is a luxury teams would kill to have.
They’ve been such a well-coached and drilled team across the last half decade, and even without the big names, it’ll hold the Tigers in great stead for season 2022.

AFL Report Card: Round 2
Max Laughton, Ben Waterworth, David Zita, Ben Cotton and Catherine Healey
Foxsports
28 March 2022
RICHMOND
It was a typical Tigers win, which is impressive given the calibre of stars they were missing against the Giants. They were firing on all cylinders, albeit against a side that was pretty lacklustre on the day. It’s rare for Richmond to lose to Carlton in round one so there were some queries on them heading into round two, but Sunday’s performance suggests we shouldn’t be too alarmed by a rare loss to the Blues.
In the votes
Noah Balta and Tom Lynch were great up forward in the absence of Jack Riewoldt, kicking seven goals between them, while Shai Bolton had a terrific period of play when he put two on the board. Toby Nankervis and Ivan Soldo combined beautifully and Jayden Short roamed the back-half at will along with Daniel Rioli. Trent Cotchin was hard at it along with Nathan Broad.
Room for improvement
Not too much. They did allow the Giants to get a small taste of it in the final term but ultimately it was a very composed and professional outing by a side that, given the outs, couldn’t have done much more.
