From Bluey's post
9. St Kilda - Jack Riewoldt
Style like: Ben Dixon
My Ranking: 18
Jack Riewoldt is a versatile tall who has okay pace. Will probably play as a key forward in his AFL career but has shown enough that he could hold down a key defensive post. Strong overhead (especially in contested situations), nice skills and shows some class. A fair bit behind Sellar, Thorp, Hansen and Gumbleton but it gives more of an indication of how good those 4 are. Riewoldt was very impressive in the VFL against men and more than held his ground IMO, featuring in the bests a few times. Shown at the U18 champs that he can be a genuine match winner. Not as athletic or classy as his cousin Nick, but tougher and more versatile IMHO, basically just a class or two below Nick prior to the draft. Query at this stage on his body size as he seems very wiry and may not bulk up enough to hold down a key post consistently. Has links to the club through his brother so believe that the Saints could be keen to add some further height. Would definitely look at Selwood too.

8 - COLLINGWOOD - JACK RIEWOLDT
Tassie Mariners, 31 October 1988, 192.3cm, 85.4kg
Another draft 'sub-plot' thickens with Collingwood an intriguing player with two selections inside its top 10. It is understood both the Magpies and Saints are eager to secure the cousin of St Kilda superstar Nick, but if the Pies want him, they must nab him with this selection otherwise they run the risk of the Saints snapping him up with their next pick. But will the Pies consider Thorp, a ruckman (more on that at No.10) or a midfielder with this pick? It genuinely could be a toss up for the Pies, between Riewoldt and Thorp, if they are both available at this choice. The fact that St Kilda is the meat in the Collingwood sandwich makes it an appetising notion. There is no way Leuenberger would get past the Magpies, while if Geelong opted for an alternate to Boak, then the Pies would not let the sleek midfielder pass by either.
Highlights/achievements: Goal-kicking forward who is extremely strong overhead. Impressive at VFL level in eight games for Tasmanian Devils including outstanding game versus Bendigo Bombers where he took 13 marks and kicked four goals. From Clarence F.C.

I think the club will certainly be under the pump again with our first pick.
Not sure what other people's thoughts are the jury is still out on young Jack.
With Sellar still around, we probably should have taken him. Similar size but seems to be a better player.
I dont think you have to worry about the SA kids wanting to go home coz if they do its unlikely that either Port or Adelaide would be low enough to get them in the PSD so they would always have trade value.
Lets hope that Jack can be better than his cousin. :thumbsup

Well that just answers the PM I just sent you
Don't worry about replying hahaha :thumbsup
-
Just as long as he's better than Collingwoods pick 8 I'll be delighted.
-
Hope he is not a sooky baby like his cousin :scream
I Don't know much about these things so no other comment on my behalf :lol

Sellar is a better player, he should have been selected instead. Poor selection here for mine but clearly the kid has admirers at punt road. I just dont see alot of improvement-hopefully he proves me wrong the boy- I cant be a hypocrite on this site for months Ive said I didnt really want us to select him.
-
It seems that the opinions are 50-50.
Some people are saying that he is no good.
Miller and FJ were really keen on him.
I only seen him once in the VFL and did ok, especially at 17. If he imporves his strength then he may become a real target up forward with his contested marking.
-
The collingwood recruiting guy said while they would have liked to have gone for Jack for his great personality and leadership qualities, they went for the dud they picked da-da-da-da-da
-
I wonder if the Pies taking Reid affected us
Apparently not. Word from the Draft Night is that he was our target. TW was on 3AW an hour or so ago and said we would have taken him with pick 8 if we'd still had it.
-
Sellar has played as a ruckman in his junior career but he won't be able to do that in the AFL at only 195cm.
We're going to cop the Reid, Nathan Brown vs Riewoldt arguments from now on from Pie fans.

Thanks FF :cheers. Although no matter what happened we didn't expect the Club to say otherwise as far as picks 8 and 13 went lol ;).
-
the one that will haunt us is Bachar Houli at 42 not Reid or Brown.

From Weaver's phantom draft:
33. Jack Reiwoldt - A slow centreman in a KP player’s body. Takes very short steps when he runs which can give the impression of running on the spot. Gets his marks from superior reading of the play and anticipation. Lack of athleticism should seem him be the dropper in this draft. Doesn’t get gaps on defenders which means he takes too many contested marks, relies on losing opponents in traffic and getting the ball at ground level.
-
LukeHodge15's Riewoldt profile from BF:
JACK RIEWOLDT
193cm - 84kilos - 31.10.88
AFL LIKE - Little COUSIN NICK RIEWOLDT
CHAMIONSHIPS POSITION - FF, HFF, CHF
AFL POSITION - UTILITY, HFF, CHF
KICK - 50m KICK RIGHT 6/10 ..... very good and very ordinary
- top 3 contested marks on offer, actually 2 because geelong already have rights on tommy hawkins with their 3rd round pick i know contested marking is starting to be a forgotten art, i just think its so important to winning premierships still when the acid is applied to games.
- 2 good games at the championships and one he would rather forget.
- another already playing in the tassie VFL side and mentioned in the best a few times against the big boys.
- awesome pair of hands, and thats one skill that cannot really be improved at afl level. U EITHER BORN WITH STICKY FINGERS OR U ARENT. Riewoldt is a gem with what he brings to the table with his marking.
- shame he brings the same kicking genes as his cousin. studdering approach to goal and just doesnt look comfortable and relaxed over the footy when kicking. saying that he single handedly grabbed the game by the throat against NSW and carried them over the line with 3 goals & a couple of contested marks in the final quarter. kicking under pressure was first class.
- with his hands, could play CHF imo.....attractive prospect
QUERIES - due to his croched posture, actually looks shorter than he is actually listed at ( 193cm ). the big question mark is wether he can play KP or will just be a utility type that could fill multiple positions on the ground. with the flavor of the month being tall wingman, wouldnt discount him making for some difficult match ups for opposition coaches. cant wait to see some of his times at draft camp to get a line on his speed. but so would i like to see many times from a heap of players. obviously kicking is a little concern also although nick riewoldt not the prettiest kick but he is still very effective.
James Seller ran 2.87 over 20m last year at 195cm
RANKING - 9

personally, not a big fan.
the club however is thrilled to bits
-
I've only seen the kid play once and that was in the pouring rain and he really struggled. His kicking was average at best and he wasn't that quick.
But hey...everyone's allowed a bad day - I have 'em all the time ;D
Welcome to Tigerland Jack

I was really keen on Reid, so was dissapointed when he didn't slip through.
However on young Jack, I'm not too angry at picking him at 13. Some don't think he is up to it, but I do.
Fantastic overhead mark and has a good all round game, just doesn't have great pace. However this can be corrected, as like Weaver said that at the moment he has a sh!thouse running style. If he can fix this up and take longer strides he will be very good.

Richmond Get The Player At Pick 13 That They Wanted At Pick 8
aflinsider.net
November 25th 2006 11:59
You have to love it when a plan comes together, and Richmond's trade week just got better. The Tigers have been telling everyone that they would have drafted Riewoldt at pick 8 and there is definitely truth to that statement.
That means they really acquired Polak and pick 60 for the cost of pick 42. Polak was the 4th overall pick in the 2001 draft, so Richmond did very well with that trade.
Maybe if Selwood had slipped to 8 the Tigers might have not looked too good, but Geelong went with Selwood at pick 7 and that left Collingwood with a lot of players to consider at number 8. They went with Reid but would have also considered Riewoldt at pick 8.
Riewoldt at pick 13 by itself would be something to celebrate, but as they also got big Graham Polak in the deal as well it means Richmond just got a lot bigger and a lot better.

Rocky Balboa was slow also, but if we get Jack out chasing some chooks and running on the beach with Apollo Creed, I think we can add some speed to those legs.

Riewoldt relief for Richmond
Brett Stubbs
The Sunday Tasmanian
WHEN Richmond traded pick eight for Fremantle's Graham Polak, it thought it had kissed its chance of securing exciting Tasmanian forward Jack Riewoldt goodbye.
But the Tigers were thrilled yesterday to see Riewoldt, cousin of St Kilda star forward Nick Riewoldt, surprisingly passed over in the earlier rounds and still available at No. 13.
He was one of four Tasmanians drafted yesterday, along with Mitch Thorp (pick six to Hawthorn), Tom Hislop (20, Essendon) and Colin Garland (46, Melbourne).
"Jack Riewoldt is a player we would have liked at (number) eight but we traded eight away and I had my recruiting manager nervous for the last two months," Richmond football director Greg Miller said on the club's website.
"But to get him at 13 was a surprise and we're very happy about that.
"Riewoldt is exuberant and a very strong mark, he's good on both sides of his body, he's going to add to our mix.
"We've got a great group of young players and his talent and enthusiasm for the game will mix in very well with our group. He's a perfect fit for us."
Riewoldt, 18, said it was a nervous morning for him yesterday as he awoke at 6am.
"It was like the big build-up before the big boom just waiting for my name to be read out," Riewoldt said.
"You don't think you are ever going to go anywhere. I am just happy to be given a chance at Richmond and just to have a chance at AFL level."
The strong-marking forward is familiar with many of the Tigers' coaching staff, having played under assistant Craig McRae with the Allies and played alongside former Kangaroo key forward Jade Rawlings at the Devils last year.

Riewoldt, Polak delight for Tigers
The Mecury
November 27, 2006 12:00am
RICHMOND reckons it has effectively picked up exciting prospect Graham Polak for nothing and still won the player it wanted at Saturday's AFL national draft.
The Tigers traded first-round draft picks with Fremantle -- No. 8 for No. 13 -- as part of a deal to secure ex-Docker Polak during trade week last month.
But the Tigers' original draft target, Tasmanian forward Jack Riewoldt, still fell to the club at No. 13 on Saturday, leaving Richmond officials thrilled with their horse-trading.
"Jack would have been our choice at No. 8. We traded eight away for 13 and our recruiting officer got pretty nervous about that," said Richmond director of football Greg Miller.
"To get Polak through the trade and still pick up Jack is amazing," he said. "We were rapt about that."
Riewoldt, the cousin of St Kilda superstar Nick Riewoldt, played senior football this year for the Tassie Devils in the second-tier VFL.
Much of Riewoldt's recruitment is attributable to former Hawthorn, Western Bulldogs and Kangaroos player Jade Rawlings, now an assistant coach at the Tigers.
Rawlings played alongside Riewoldt for much of last season, and was effusive in his praise to recruiting staff about the 18-year-old's talent.
"Jack played senior footy with Jade Rawlings and we already had him high on our agenda," Miller said.
"But when Jade arrived, he said 'he's a bloody beauty'."
At 192cm and 85kg, Riewoldt is a strong-marking, goalkicking forward the Tigers rate an early goer.
Richmond believes Riewoldt could be playing alongside forward spearheads Matthew Richardson and fit-again Nathan Brown as early as round one.
And Polak, a 22-year-old first-round draft choice who never lived up to his potential at Fremantle, will get first crack at the Tigers' problem centre half back position.
They recruited three forwards among their five draft selections on Saturday.
That's likely to ensure much-maligned ex-Geelong forward Kent Kingsley, who has been training with the club, will have to look elsewhere in next month's pre-season draft.
The Tigers believe they have also got a bargain with left-footed midfielder Daniel Connors at No. 58.
There are queries over the Geelong youngster's pace, but the Tigers believe they can fix his running style and give him a taste of senior football in 2007.

JACK RIEWOLDT: Draft pick No 13
(http://richmondfc.com.au/cp2/c2/webi/article/307861bh.jpg)
Recruited from: Tassie Mariners
Born: 31/10/88
Height: 192cm
Weight: 85kg
A goalkicking forward, who has outstanding aerial ability, reads the play extremely well, and is a very clean ball handler. Had an excellent year in 2006 playing for Tasmania’s under-18s team, as well as the Tassie Devils in the VFL competition during the second half of the season. Produced a brilliant display of forward play against the Bendigo Bombers, taking 15 marks, kicking five goals and running his opponents ragged. He also played – and dominated – senior TFL football for Clarence (Royce Hart’s old Tassie club), despite being at the tender age of 17. Was a star for Clarence in its grand final victory over Glenorchy, booting four goals and setting up several others through intelligent play. Is the cousin of St Kilda star Nick Riewoldt.

Jack is one out of the box

Leading Tasmanian football writer, James Bresnehan, has been closely monitoring the progress of Richmond’s No. 1 selection at the AFL National Draft, Jack Riewoldt, over the past few years and is convinced the talented teenage forward has what it takes to put a significant stamp on the game at the highest level.
“In 2003, Clarence officials began telling me he’d get drafted. At that time he had not even played a senior game – he was in the under 15s,” Bresnehan said.
“Jack has been in the state development since around then and has really come on in leaps and bounds.

It's only one game but based on tonight's game I'm glad we got Riewoldt ahead of Nathan Brown. The poor kid couldn't hit a target.
-
Doh.. I meant Nathan Brown Mark III. Edited the above post.
-
Good luck to the kid, but I'm going to be mighty amused if Collingwood used a top 10 pick on the wrong twin who can't kick.
-
didnt think much of brown either but its so so early to call on any of these kids who knows???
All im happy for is that we seem to put alot of emphasis on character and personality too when selecting juniors.
Also if you can't kick or dispose of the ball then theres a good chance we wont draft you.
we've gota good bunch of juniors all prepared to put in the hard yakka off their own back as they have shown over the preseason. This is why you place character and talent on an equal footing. its so important.
bigups the the ones like richmond :cheers

FF, going by Eagles game tonight the Pies did pick the wrong twin ;).

f*** it if he isn't ready !

Jack's on now with Gibbs, Hansen, James Frawley and Reid

Well that was a waste of time. They didn't even bother to ask Jack a question directly ::). Just asked if they had managers which Jack answered and that was it.
