Riewoldt, Polak delight for Tigers

RICHMOND reckons it has effectively picked up exciting prospect Graham Polak for nothing and still won the player it wanted at Saturday's AFL national draft.
The Tigers traded first-round draft picks with Fremantle -- No. 8 for No. 13 -- as part of a deal to secure ex-Docker Polak during trade week last month.
But the Tigers' original draft target, Tasmanian forward Jack Riewoldt, still fell to the club at No. 13 on Saturday, leaving Richmond officials thrilled with their horse-trading.
"Jack would have been our choice at No. 8. We traded eight away for 13 and our recruiting officer got pretty nervous about that," said Richmond director of football Greg Miller.
"To get Polak through the trade and still pick up Jack is amazing," he said. "We were rapt about that."
Riewoldt, the cousin of St Kilda superstar Nick Riewoldt, played senior football this year for the Tassie Devils in the second-tier VFL.
Much of Riewoldt's recruitment is attributable to former Hawthorn, Western Bulldogs and Kangaroos player Jade Rawlings, now an assistant coach at the Tigers.
Rawlings played alongside Riewoldt for much of last season, and was effusive in his praise to recruiting staff about the 18-year-old's talent.
"Jack played senior footy with Jade Rawlings and we already had him high on our agenda," Miller said.
"But when Jade arrived, he said 'he's a bloody beauty'."
At 192cm and 85kg, Riewoldt is a strong-marking, goalkicking forward the Tigers rate an early goer.
Richmond believes Riewoldt could be playing alongside forward spearheads Matthew Richardson and fit-again Nathan Brown as early as round one.
And Polak, a 22-year-old first-round draft choice who never lived up to his potential at Fremantle, will get first crack at the Tigers' problem centre half back position.
They recruited three forwards among their five draft selections on Saturday.
That's likely to ensure much-maligned ex-Geelong forward Kent Kingsley, who has been training with the club, will have to look elsewhere in next month's pre-season draft.
The Tigers believe they have also got a bargain with left-footed midfielder Daniel Connors at No. 58.
There are queries over the Geelong youngster's pace, but the Tigers believe they can fix his running style and give him a taste of senior football in 2007.
