From Bluey's post

9. St Kilda - Jack Riewoldt
Style like: Ben Dixon
My Ranking: 18

Jack Riewoldt is a versatile tall who has okay pace. Will probably play as a key forward in his AFL career but has shown enough that he could hold down a key defensive post. Strong overhead (especially in contested situations), nice skills and shows some class. A fair bit behind Sellar, Thorp, Hansen and Gumbleton but it gives more of an indication of how good those 4 are. Riewoldt was very impressive in the VFL against men and more than held his ground IMO, featuring in the bests a few times. Shown at the U18 champs that he can be a genuine match winner. Not as athletic or classy as his cousin Nick, but tougher and more versatile IMHO, basically just a class or two below Nick prior to the draft. Query at this stage on his body size as he seems very wiry and may not bulk up enough to hold down a key post consistently. Has links to the club through his brother so believe that the Saints could be keen to add some further height. Would definitely look at Selwood too.

8 - COLLINGWOOD - JACK RIEWOLDT
Tassie Mariners, 31 October 1988, 192.3cm, 85.4kg

Another draft 'sub-plot' thickens with Collingwood an intriguing player with two selections inside its top 10. It is understood both the Magpies and Saints are eager to secure the cousin of St Kilda superstar Nick, but if the Pies want him, they must nab him with this selection otherwise they run the risk of the Saints snapping him up with their next pick. But will the Pies consider Thorp, a ruckman (more on that at No.10) or a midfielder with this pick? It genuinely could be a toss up for the Pies, between Riewoldt and Thorp, if they are both available at this choice. The fact that St Kilda is the meat in the Collingwood sandwich makes it an appetising notion. There is no way Leuenberger would get past the Magpies, while if Geelong opted for an alternate to Boak, then the Pies would not let the sleek midfielder pass by either.

Highlights/achievements: Goal-kicking forward who is extremely strong overhead. Impressive at VFL level in eight games for Tasmanian Devils including outstanding game versus Bendigo Bombers where he took 13 marks and kicked four goals. From Clarence F.C.

I think the club will certainly be under the pump again with our first pick.

Not sure what other people's thoughts are the jury is still out on young Jack.

With Sellar still around, we probably should have taken him. Similar size but seems to be a better player.

I dont think you have to worry about the SA kids wanting to go home coz if they do its unlikely that either Port or Adelaide would be low enough to get them in the PSD so they would always have trade value.

Lets hope that Jack can be better than his cousin.  :thumbsup

Just as long as he's better than Collingwoods pick 8 I'll be delighted.

Sellar is a better player, he should have been selected instead. Poor selection here for mine but clearly the kid has admirers at punt road. I just dont see alot of improvement-hopefully he proves me wrong the boy- I cant be a hypocrite on this site for months Ive said I didnt really want us to select him.

It seems that the opinions are 50-50.

Some people are saying that he is no good.

Miller and FJ were really keen on him.

I only seen him once in the VFL and did ok, especially at 17. If he imporves his strength then he may become a real target up forward with his contested marking.

The collingwood recruiting guy said while they would have liked to have gone for Jack for his great personality and leadership qualities, they went for the dud they picked da-da-da-da-da

Apparently not. Word from the Draft Night is that he was our target. TW was on 3AW an hour or so ago and said we would have taken him with pick 8 if we'd still had it.

Sellar has played as a ruckman in his junior career but he won't be able to do that in the AFL at only 195cm.

We're going to cop the Reid, Nathan Brown vs Riewoldt arguments from now on from Pie fans.

Thanks FF  :cheers. Although no matter what happened we didn't expect the Club to say otherwise as far as picks 8 and 13 went lol ;).
