The word out of Adelaide is Port reckons we will "flood". The Power are also building this game up as revenge for us beating them over there last year.
The Power players have been carrying a defeat they need to atone for much longer [than Richmond], claims Port coach Mark Williams.
He says the 38-point loss to the Tigers at West Lakes in round 14 last year - when Port spun into a six-game losing streak - has not been forgotten by his players.
"Richmond beat us at home last year so we'll be keen to get one back," Williams said yesterday.
http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,21697416-21545,00.html
PORT Adelaide is on red alert.
The in-form Power is wary of history repeating and is bracing itself for a Richmond backlash - and a major flood - at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.
"They are coming off a big loss so they will be extra keen to rectify that," All-Australian Power ruckman Brendon Lade warned.
"They will be doing everything they can to win and we've just got to find a way to beat them."
Richmond - winless and bottom after six rounds - is coming off its biggest-ever loss, to Geelong, having been slaughtered by 157 points on Sunday.
But the last time the Tigers succumbed so meekly - to Sydney by 118 points in round seven last year - they rebounded to beat Adelaide the next week in a game remembered for one of the biggest floods ever employed in AFL football. Six weeks later, the Tigers upset the Power at AAMI Stadium by 38 points.
The Port players have been told to expect a similar response this time around.
"They haven't had a win, so they will be desperate," Power small forward Brett Ebert said.
"Like Melbourne last week, the Richmond players will be playing for their spots so they will be hard at it, really physical.
"In the first five minutes it's going to be on and we are going to have to match them. They beat us at AAMI Stadium last year and we know it's going to be a tough game again."
If history is any guide, this match won't be the walkover most expect.
Richmond is just one of many sides to follow a disastrous defeat with a win the next week.
In 2004, Adelaide beat the Kangaroos the week after crashing to a record 141-point loss to Brisbane at the Gabba, the Kangaroos beat Hawthorn in the finals in 2000 after losing by a massive 125 points to Essendon the previous week and in 2002, St Kilda recovered from a 122-point loss to Geelong to draw with Sydney.
In 1997, Richmond rebounded from a 137-point loss to Adelaide to defeat the Western Bulldogs.
"We know they'll be really competitive," Ebert said, acknowledging how a team's fortunes can change so quickly.
The Power expects to be dealing with a massive flood - perhaps as big as the one Richmond coach Terry Wallace used to bring down the Crows at Telstra Dome last season, which prompted Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy to label Wallace's tactics as "basketball crap".
"I suppose they will try anything to win," Lade said. "We'll have to wait to see what they come up with and if they go the flood we will have to try to get on top of it very quickly."
Ebert said the Power's coaching staff had been working all week to devise tactics to bring the flood undone. This was evident at training yesterday when there was plenty of hard, one-on-one work followed by quick movement of the ball into the forward line. Port coach Mark Williams had his forwards start at half-forward and then race back towards goal with the midfielders instructed to kick the ball over the defenders' heads.
"It's always hard to beat a flood but the coaches have been working pretty hard to combat it," Ebert said.
Lade said the key for Port is to use its blistering pace to its advantage. "We've got a lot of pace in our team and we've got to move the ball quickly," he said.

We didn't flood in that Crows game. Adelaide flooded and we refused to kick the ball forward to them until they manned up. They didn't so the Bowdens just played kick to kick because we were 3 goals in front.
In any case you can't play like that at Footy Park. You have to play through the corridor especially if there's the usual 2-3 goal breeze favouring one end. Chipping around the boundary and going sideways will guarantee another 100+ point loss.

That really poos me.
For the past 3 weeks I have listened to Radio pre-match and the commentators go, "It'll be disappointing if they flood again tonight. We want to see a free flowing match and I hope Wallace allows that."
And then without fail by halfway through the 2nd quarter they say "Well its good to see Wallace isnt effecting the flood like we thought"
WITHOUT BLOODY FAIL! :banghead :banghead
Looks like I'll have to put up with the same this week. :scream :scream :scream :scream :scream :scream

That is so true tigersalive lol. The only time Plough has flooded this year was in the second quarter last Sunday. It only subdued Geelong for about 10 minutes before they kicked 10 goals in a quarter again.
-
i wouldnt say we flooded in the 2nd quarter either, tery sent 2 guys extra down back, thats not really a flood.
imo, whetehr its pretty or not, tthe full on flood shoudl have been enforced at teh 10min mark of the first quarter just to stem the tide
-
No, the flood should of started 20 minutes before the first bounce. We might have built a big enough lead playing against ourselves.

This must be the most one-sided odds ever in footy
Port Adelaide $1.10
Richmond $6.25
Port Adelaide Under 39.5 Pts $2.35
Port Adelaide Over 39.5 Pts $1.90
Draw $51.00
Richmond Under 39.5 Pts $6.75
Richmond Over 39.5 Pts $25.00
Every single media "expert" (all 32 in both papers) tipped Port.
-
Why wouldnt you pick Port ?
Its the worst Richmond team I can ever remember.
Richo to ruck,? oh dear

LESSONS FROM LAST WEEK
The biggest thing the players took out of last week is that they need to compete at an appropriate level every week. If you are slightly off your maximum in this competition you’ll get smacked; as we found out last week against Geelong.
OUR BACKS
They have to improve the amount of marks that are being taken on them inside 50. Admittedly, there was not a lot of pressure coming through the middle of the ground last week, but they continually got beaten in the same way. Obviously you are not going to win every contest as a backman but you have to at least try and deny the forwards something.
THEIR FORWARDS
Warren Tredrea is their main tall target; Brett Ebert has also been a focal point for them in the goal square. They certainly have a lot of speed and a very dangerous forward line so we’ll have to make sure we have the speed to match them in defence.
MIDFIELD BATTLE
Port has as talented a midfield as anyone in the competition, so it will be a good challenge for our midfielders to try and match it with the best. They are not the type of midfield you want to have a shootout with, particularly when you look at the quality players they can swing through there, like the Burgoyne brothers and Cornes boys.
THE RUCK DUEL
We are going to have to improvise a little bit and use a couple of players that are not natural ruckmen. We have a couple of little plans up our sleeve as to how we are going to compete against Brendon Lade and possibly Dean Brogan. Essentially, we have to be competitive in the air in order to make it a level playing field once the ball hits the ground.
OUR FORWARDS
We have been concentrating on the players offering enough targets to our midfielders. We want our forwards to continually work to offer the kicker the lead and someone to kick to rather than be stationary.
THEIR BACKS
They seem to be a very honest backline and seem to work pretty well together. They also rebound very well, so it is going to be a catch 22 to be able to go for our marks and kick a winning score and also restrict their run from their backline as well.

Have to agree, complete waste of time this article.
Its basically feeding the nuff nuffs.
No wonder the tiges are getting thrashed if this is the level of gabbage going around ::)

These previews are down just to have something new up on the official site. You'd expect them to be basic and lacking detail.

Tiger coach holds out hope for clash with Port
May 12, 2007
The Age
RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace last night expressed hope — though nothing stronger — that his players will compete against early-season AFL surprise packet Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium today.
Six days on from the 157-point loss to Geelong that broke all kinds of unwanted records, Wallace said the horrors of that afternoon would stay with the club for some time yet.
But he was hopeful a strong showing against Power would start to heal the wound.
"We hope we at least come with the game of the first five weeks where we were competitive in each of those games, but certainly last week was a horror for the club in general and has been all week," he said last night.
"It's been one of those that has lasted on and in supporters' minds will for a fair while, so we've got a fair bit to make amends for.
"We rate ourselves as wanting to be competitive every time we play and so that's the bare minimum (expectation)."
The Tigers are grateful for one small mercy with the successful recovery of marking target Jay Schulz, who ran freely at the team's late afternoon run yesterday and is now odds-on to take his place.
"We're hoping he'll back up OK, we put him through a bit of a fitness test prior but brought over an extra player anyway just in case," Wallace said.
While expressing a desire to keep things open and aggressive, as he had done in narrow losses to competition benchmarks Sydney and West Coast, Wallace conceded Port's ruck combination of Brendon Lade and the returning Dean Brogan was capable of tearing his on-ball division to shreds.
"It's an extreme problem for us and it has been the whole year, we lost (Trent) Knobel and (Ray) Hall before the season, Troy Simmonds has been struggling to come up, Adam Pattison played in the early games and battled as an immature developing ruckman," he said.
"We've thrown (Matthew) Richardson in there because he's a man and can compete, but stoppages and first hands on the ball has been a major issue for us."
Port Adelaide's prospects seem as rosy as the Tigers' are grim, particularly after Kane Cornes and Brogan proved their fitness for today.
Coach Mark Williams put on a prickly front for the second consecutive week, after ensuring his players remained fired up for a meeting with fellow struggler Melbourne last round.
In terms of ammunition, Williams need only look as far as last year, when the Tigers applied a successful choke to an injury-affected Power side to run out a comfortable winner.
"I'm sure the Tigers would've just rolled out last year's tape and it would've showed they're pretty similar sides playing, I'm not sure we need too much motivation," he said.
"I'm sure they'll be harking back to playing pretty good against Sydney and West Coast and we're looking at those games rather than last week."

Good to see we've come out firing :-\
2 goals down already :help
-
Lids got a tackle X lol
Skill errors kill us.
-
Can someone explain that free kick for Port's opening goal?
-
Off the ball infringement by King on Motlop defensive side of pack so the free is paid to Lade where the ball is.
Well done Polly
Woohoo Petts gets another :gotigers
Scores level. Pressure good at this stage.
-
That looked like a goal to me ???
-
Can someone tell our forwards to play in front. We are winning it out of the centre.
-
Goal to Sarge :gotigers.
Another dumb turnover then costs us a goal :banghead. Two grubbers to Tivs. 3 turnovers to Tivs ::)
-
Brand of footy and effort was good that quarter but the same story as far as turnovers go. We are killing Port out of the middle despite Richo lol and Patto not getting a hand near the ball but then we turn it over and Port run it up the other end.
-
well guys /gals l had enough its halway through second quarter l cannot watch anymore
Our foot skills are at a all time low
Our match ups are so bad from Terry Wallace l'm afraid he cannot coach properly
l'm at a lose at why we are so bad
l'm off to the local footy its alot better to watch goodday :'(
-
Yep very ugly. Defensive pressure disappeared after quarter time. We've had about 8 shots that quarter and missed them all which kills you. Port then kill us going the coast to coast down the same side.
Voss just bagged our leaders for bagging McGuane after that mistake instead of giving him support.
-
I've decided not to watch the rest of the game... better for my stress levels lol.
-
We just can't keep the intensity up for long periods whereas Port can. Too undermanned and too many mistakes.

joel
polak
patto(yes he competed hard all day , did well)
these guys never stopped all day
i dont care how many touches tivendale got today he butchered nearly every possession, why the hell do they even give that loser the ball!
btw richo is finished, follow gaspar!
-
improvement on last week lol :rollin
Had some winners.
Bowden played like a senior in defence today.
Polak held his own.
Sarge had his moments
Petticoat lifted his work rate
Lids bounced back and played a nice game, was beaten early by White but he is not a full back.
Foley once againt the shining light. B&F coming his way at the end of the year.

Pretty much agreed X, Tivendale proved why he shouldn't have come back into the team. At the critical stage early in the 2nd qtr he f***ked us over with 2 terrible turnovers.
BTW where's Lids in your list of bests, is he still in your bad books. Played a good all round game IMO.
-
From now on I think that Lids should be banned from the backline. Is not a defender.
His roles should be alternating between forward and midfield. Last qtr was great evidence of this with his ability up forward to take strong marks and kick straight for goal.

So the couple of goals Richo kicked didn't account for anything? The fact that he has to play multiple positions means nothing? I only watched the second half but I didn't see your boy Krak doing a hell of a lot.

lids must take richos role in teh fwd line, as a floating mobile fwd, who can run the ground, play a role sim to what richo did when he could play and how nick riewolt plays now
richo must go to coburg or retire and jon must take lids spot as a rebounding hbf'er

julz u r hopeless, read the thread i started b4 u mention krak!!!!(u may read i actually say krak must be dropped forever! )
richos goals meant nothing , absolutely nothing, junk time goals! when he was meant to stand up and be a leader he went back to his bad ways, bad body language , bad sooking and weak footy. he was absolutely useless.
i cant stand sugar, and he made a few skill errors today but he lead from the front and was a leader along with joel, richo went missing again
wow you must have a prety low standard if you think richos 2 junk time goals meant something
pettifer who is known to be lazy busted his bum today , too bad for his kicking for goal , but damn he worked 100 times harder than richo
-
They fought the game out at least. Just don't have the damaging senior players with class to compete and made far too many unforced errors. Foley, Polak, Bowden, Polo and Sugar would be up there as our best players.

the day richo gets beaten at a marking contest 1 on 1 with players half his size is teh day richo must retire, and that day was today
-
There's so much waffle that comes from you, it's hard to keep track of. As for 2 goals meaning nothing, so you'd prefer to lose from a great margin????? But you didn't mention how Richo has had to play in more than one position.
-

That is an intriguing prospect X and one that could certainly work for us. IMO our future starting midfielders will be Foley, Polo and Connors. This frees up Lids to play a role up forward and at times through the midfield.
Up forward Lids would be too big and strong for smalls and too quick and agile for the talls. Add to that his marking ability and goal sense and he is an attractive package up forward
-
some of the match ups throughout the game were a farce. Look im not saying that I know everything but for example letting Deledio get chopped up by White because of height and size when they could have stuck Schulz down back and played with a Richardson Hughes forward line puzzles me.
-
BTW where's Lids in your list of bests, is he still in your bad books. Played a good all round game IMO.
im not going to bag lids for his first 2-3 quarters, he was miss matched, played in a role that he should not have and i have no idea why mguane wasnt put there as he had extra height
lids laid a couple of tackles good to see but he looks his best , not in defence, not in the middle but up fwd.
when he went fwd he was at nearly every contest and made space and created play
he must play in a role as i said b4 and a floatiing fwd , where he can kill opposition on teh score board , create a target and also run the ground to aid teh midfield.
he can easily play a role like riewoldt x buddy
i was happy with his game today esp up fwd
-

40pts 52 pts who cares a loss is a loss and richo was useless
where was richo in th egame when he was most needed, maybe in the fwd pocket hiding behind teh point post tissing thinking of you, but he was not on teh ground playing as he should be and contributed as a leader should be
i dont care if richo has his heart on his sleeve and a bugle in his pants, his days are numbered and the game has passed him! reality!
delidio played fwd for 25% of the time that richo did and was a far better prospect
deledio could play richos role 1000 times better than richo , so if terry says that the older blokes will make way for the younger ones that have equalled them or passed them then if he is fair dinkum, richo should be dropped

Good post X, would love to Lids keep playing up forward but with Wallace :o you never know where Lids is going to play next

As Steph said comments telling a player to commit suicide are disgusting and offensive >:(. I've deleted them. I've also removed all the personal crap. Enough! :banghead
-
Glad I missed it - some real
children make that morons around here. :wallywink
I would think TW is giving Lids a learning experience and just giving him a taste all over the ground while we are in this current phase.
I would be very surprised if he did not end up in the midfield for the higher % of his playing days. But with the versatilty to move where we need him to save or bust open games in years to come.
Last half positive - shame about the first half, when yor down you really dont need to come up against a red hot port at home with the crowd on there side.(which also influences the umps)
Not really bad today but thing like petts getting ridden into the ground and Whoever it was that got pinged for a half spin in a tackle allways seem to go to the other teams and not us.
Maybe that will change when we become a better side
-
As Steph said comments telling a player to commit suicide are disgusting and offensive >:(. I've deleted them. I've also removed all the personal crap. Enough! :banghead
centainly dont need stuff like that
RFC were bad today l walked out after seeing Tivendale do some very bad turnovers in the 2nd as this aint what we meant to be seeing after TW took over being here 28 months playing the kids or not & once l seen us go up field chip chip kicks took about 10 chips to turnover & 2 kicks to go back for a goal to port l willnot watch this team play again this year enough is enough my stress was overtop my BP was over l could feel it
The promised game plans & coaching of Terry Wallace is no different to when Danny Frawley was here these players are weak as pee, they too afraid to take the game on & tackle like sissys l watch all the games every week and none of the games are even close to the style RFC play its like watching slow country league games
watching Richmond football club is tramatic & unhealthy there is no other way to explain it
l dont care if we get belted by 100 points every week as long as l dont see shocking kicking & turnovers that is like watching Under 12s play
Richmond play a style of football that they put themselves under preasure all the time from playing on when they dont need to
it happens every week they generate there own slaughter :banghead
-
Talking about weak as pee, Tim Fleming sure wasn't.
Sure he had no footy brain or skills but he was one of our toughest players who gave his all and made the opposition no he was out there.
Could sure use someone like him at the moment
-

WHO HEARD IT AGAIN???!! :scream :rollin
As I said, 2nd quarter I'm pretty sure.
Michael Christian: "Good to see the Tigers arent flooding and Terry Wallace is allowing one-on-one football."
:banghead :banghead
-
I watched the game only the second or third ive seen this season.
Some of the young blokes need to learn early on that you can't be a passenger. Seemed like at every stoppage and contested possession our blokes would simply run forward of the ball. Port had a better structure. A few blokes at the back of the pack and a few running on. Really hurt us.
There wasn't a lot to get excited about though.
-

Trust me the only team that flooded was the team wearing teal.
Cannot remember the number of times we were trying get the ball out of defensive 50 and all the Port players we forward of their 50m arc. Except for on the odd occassion Lade who when resting does nothing more than stand in the goal square
