Richmond vs Power match thread
« on: May 10, 2007, 05:32:41 AM »
The word out of Adelaide is Port reckons we will "flood". The Power are also building this game up as revenge for us beating them over there last year.

Quote
The Power players have been carrying a defeat they need to atone for much longer [than Richmond], claims Port coach Mark Williams.

He says the 38-point loss to the Tigers at West Lakes in round 14 last year - when Port spun into a six-game losing streak - has not been forgotten by his players.

"Richmond beat us at home last year so we'll be keen to get one back," Williams said yesterday.

PORT Adelaide is on red alert.

The in-form Power is wary of history repeating and is bracing itself for a Richmond backlash - and a major flood - at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.

"They are coming off a big loss so they will be extra keen to rectify that," All-Australian Power ruckman Brendon Lade warned.

"They will be doing everything they can to win and we've just got to find a way to beat them."

Richmond - winless and bottom after six rounds - is coming off its biggest-ever loss, to Geelong, having been slaughtered by 157 points on Sunday.

But the last time the Tigers succumbed so meekly - to Sydney by 118 points in round seven last year - they rebounded to beat Adelaide the next week in a game remembered for one of the biggest floods ever employed in AFL football. Six weeks later, the Tigers upset the Power at AAMI Stadium by 38 points.

The Port players have been told to expect a similar response this time around.

"They haven't had a win, so they will be desperate," Power small forward Brett Ebert said.

"Like Melbourne last week, the Richmond players will be playing for their spots so they will be hard at it, really physical.

"In the first five minutes it's going to be on and we are going to have to match them. They beat us at AAMI Stadium last year and we know it's going to be a tough game again."

If history is any guide, this match won't be the walkover most expect.

Richmond is just one of many sides to follow a disastrous defeat with a win the next week.

In 2004, Adelaide beat the Kangaroos the week after crashing to a record 141-point loss to Brisbane at the Gabba, the Kangaroos beat Hawthorn in the finals in 2000 after losing by a massive 125 points to Essendon the previous week and in 2002, St Kilda recovered from a 122-point loss to Geelong to draw with Sydney.

In 1997, Richmond rebounded from a 137-point loss to Adelaide to defeat the Western Bulldogs.

"We know they'll be really competitive," Ebert said, acknowledging how a team's fortunes can change so quickly.

The Power expects to be dealing with a massive flood - perhaps as big as the one Richmond coach Terry Wallace used to bring down the Crows at Telstra Dome last season, which prompted Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy to label Wallace's tactics as "basketball crap".

"I suppose they will try anything to win," Lade said. "We'll have to wait to see what they come up with and if they go the flood we will have to try to get on top of it very quickly."

Ebert said the Power's coaching staff had been working all week to devise tactics to bring the flood undone. This was evident at training yesterday when there was plenty of hard, one-on-one work followed by quick movement of the ball into the forward line. Port coach Mark Williams had his forwards start at half-forward and then race back towards goal with the midfielders instructed to kick the ball over the defenders' heads.

"It's always hard to beat a flood but the coaches have been working pretty hard to combat it," Ebert said.

Lade said the key for Port is to use its blistering pace to its advantage. "We've got a lot of pace in our team and we've got to move the ball quickly," he said.

We didn't flood in that Crows game. Adelaide flooded and we refused to kick the ball forward to them until they manned up. They didn't so the Bowdens just played kick to kick because we were 3 goals in front.

In any case you can't play like that at Footy Park. You have to play through the corridor especially if there's the usual 2-3 goal breeze favouring one end. Chipping around the boundary and going sideways will guarantee another 100+ point loss.

That really poos me.

For the past 3 weeks I have listened to Radio pre-match and the commentators go,  "It'll be disappointing if they flood again tonight.  We want to see a free flowing match and I hope Wallace allows that."

And then without fail by halfway through the 2nd quarter they say "Well its good to see Wallace isnt effecting the flood like we thought"

WITHOUT BLOODY FAIL!  :banghead :banghead

Looks like I'll have to put up with the same this week.  :scream :scream :scream :scream :scream :scream

That is so true tigersalive lol. The only time Plough has flooded this year was in the second quarter last Sunday. It only subdued Geelong for about 10 minutes before they kicked 10 goals in a quarter again.

No, the flood should of started 20 minutes before the first bounce. We might have built a big enough lead playing against ourselves.

This must be the most one-sided odds ever in footy

Port Adelaide  $1.10
Richmond      $6.25

Port Adelaide Under 39.5 Pts  $2.35
Port Adelaide Over 39.5 Pts  $1.90
Draw  $51.00
Richmond Under 39.5 Pts  $6.75
Richmond Over 39.5 Pts   $25.00

Every single media "expert" (all 32 in both papers) tipped Port.

LESSONS FROM LAST WEEK

The biggest thing the players took out of last week is that they need to compete at an appropriate level every week. If you are slightly off your maximum in this competition you’ll get smacked; as we found out last week against Geelong.

OUR BACKS

They have to improve the amount of marks that are being taken on them inside 50. Admittedly, there was not a lot of pressure coming through the middle of the ground last week, but they continually got beaten in the same way. Obviously you are not going to win every contest as a backman but you have to at least try and deny the forwards something.

THEIR FORWARDS

Warren Tredrea is their main tall target; Brett Ebert has also been a focal point for them in the goal square. They certainly have a lot of speed and a very dangerous forward line so we’ll have to make sure we have the speed to match them in defence.

MIDFIELD BATTLE

Port has as talented a midfield as anyone in the competition, so it will be a good challenge for our midfielders to try and match it with the best. They are not the type of midfield you want to have a shootout with, particularly when you look at the quality players they can swing through there, like the Burgoyne brothers and Cornes boys.

THE RUCK DUEL

We are going to have to improvise a little bit and use a couple of players that are not natural ruckmen. We have a couple of little plans up our sleeve as to how we are going to compete against Brendon Lade and possibly Dean Brogan. Essentially, we have to be competitive in the air in order to make it a level playing field once the ball hits the ground.

OUR FORWARDS

We have been concentrating on the players offering enough targets to our midfielders. We want our forwards to continually work to offer the kicker the lead and someone to kick to rather than be stationary.

THEIR BACKS

They seem to be a very honest backline and seem to work pretty well together. They also rebound very well, so it is going to be a catch 22 to be able to go for our marks and kick a winning score and also restrict their run from their backline as well.
