Wallace's worry
Sky News
Updated: 11:16, Thursday August 14, 2008
Richmond coach Terry Wallace admits he faces a difficult decision if Hawthorn decides to repeat its tactic of playing star midfielder Luke Hodge as a spare man in defence on Sunday when the teams clash at the MCG.
Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews was roundly criticised for allowing the Hawks vice-captain to play as a loose man in defence - standing 15 metres in front of the Lions' gun centre-half-forward Jonathan Brown - during last Saturday's match in Tasmania.
As a result not only was Hodge, one of the best users of the ball in the AFL, able to dictate the tempo of the game but he was also able to severely limit Brown's influence during the Hawks' crushing 69-point win.
Hodge not only helped himself to 31 possessions - 25 of which were uncontested - but constantly got in Brown's way, blocking off his leads, and as a result the Lions champ had his worst game of the season with just six possessions and one goal.
It is a tactic the Hawks could well repeat this week against the Tigers and their own champion forward in Matthew Richardson in a game that Richmond must win to keep its finals hopes alive.
However Wallace said it was not a simple matter of just putting another player into the Tigers' attacking zone to mind Hodge, should the Hawks repeat the tactic on Sunday.
'You have got a choice, haven't you,' Wallace said.
'But if you man him (Hodge) up then you open up Buddy (Franklin's) end (of the ground) or you close down Luke but you can't have it both ways.'
Wallace said by automatically sending one of his own players down to mind Hodge in the Tigers' attack, it would mean one less player in Hawthorn's forward line - which could be potentially fatal against the league's best key forward pairing of Franklin and Jarryd Roughead.
Franklin is just nine goals away from becoming the first player since Sydney's Tony Lockett in 1998 to boot 100 goals during the home and away season while Roughead has booted 59 goals for the season.
Wallace said the key to limiting the star pair was to have extra players back in the Hawks' forward line but said you can't do that if you are forced to send a man forward to man up Hodge playing as a spare man in the Tigers' forward line.
'If you want to man up that end (Hodge) then you are making it a one-on-one scenario for their key forwards (Franklin and Roughead) and there are not too many sides that can handle their key forwards on a one-on-one basis, which they have shown all year,' Wallace said.
'So we will have to make the decision which way we go as the week goes on.'
But Wallace is in no doubt as to the size of the task confronting his side, which, even if it beats Hawthorn, has to rely on other results going their way to make the eight.
'They (Hawthorn) are getting back to their best form,' he said.
'They beat another side Brisbane last week, who are around the same spot as us (on the ladder) and also trying to force their way into the eight and they did a fair number on them.'
'So it will be a real test for our boys.'

Clarkson confident Hawks can set pace
The Age | August 16, 2008 - 12:02PM
Hawthorn take on Richmond at the MCG on Sunday and are wary of the Tigers after escaping with a 12-point win in round six.
"We've had some good contests against the Tigers over the last two or three years and we'd expect the same tomorrow," Clarkson said.
"Any side that's got Matty Richardson and (Troy) Simmonds and those type of guys in their side is a very formidable opponent.
"Kane Johnson's been in really good form, Shane Tuck has really improved as a player over the course of the last 18 months and they've brought a couple of really exciting youngsters into their mix in the last season-and-a-half."

You little ripper. I honestly didn't think that we would win. So just guess who's a happy boy now. :thumbsup :gotigers

Well, won't that just rip the ar*e out of all those predicting the end of TW. Pretty hard to mount a case for dumping him early now. And for those who want to hang their hat on "we haven't beaten anyone above us/in the 8 etc, well - we have beaten EVERY side below us, Hawthorn and Brisbane above us, as well as a draw with the Bulldogs and threw the game v the Saints. Pretty significant improvement for a team that finished last with 3 wins and is still one of the youngest in the competition. Sorry TW haters, he ain't goin' anywhere just yet. And sorry Chicken Littles, we are improving according to plan whether you choose to see it/agree with it or not.

So what happened to the Buddy factor?
I think that after this win other teams will be watching us a little more closely as we could throw a real spanner in the works.
-
While it wasnt the best game i have seen, it was great to beat the Hawks at their own game.
We ran the moving defensive zone well today and gave them their own back.
Richo is a gun, his desperate effort on the members wing to dive on the ball and get it out to Jack was sensational.
Our tall backs are really forming a great bond with each other and are developing very nicely. We have such great flexibility in Moore, Thursty and Lukey. They all compete well but have varying abilities to play on different types of forwards. This gives us great options/flexibility for match ups.
Newman was named in the best but i am not sure about him sometimes. He creates a lot of turnovers and does some dumb things at times. Cant question his work ethic though.
Carts looked very nervous and will be better for the run. Hopefully he plays a few more games.
All in all a great win.

Yes Yes Yes it was a good win.
From start to end i cant complain and i have no faults apart from Schulz's game. I thought he was average today.
Can someone tell me why we dont play Rance?? Surely he would make less clangers as schulz made today.
make lids captain i say. great game and richo and bowden you are a pair of fc.ukin beauties.
-
Yeah I thought some of Richo's efforts when outnumbered were just fantastic today especially in the last quarter on the members wing when he contested and got the ball out to Riewoldt. Just a gun player who bleeds yellow and black and clearly a better shot for goal than Buddy Franklin.
A very disciplined effort today where we were hard at the footy and fantastic to see all those Hawthorn trolls leave 22 mins into the last quarter after Richo's goal. As for Roughhead he hardly troubled the scorers and Williams was just as inconspicious other than a last quarter goal. Hawk big guns were just quiet and off their game today due to our pressure and effort.

Good point TFL. Richo apologized after the match be cause of the nature/look of the game but let's give credit where credit's due and lay blame where blame's due. Hawthorn play this style in most games and didn't have the capacity to overcome it when chucked back in their face today. Exactly what David King said pre-game - "after they evaluated the Hawks v North game the coaching panel thought it the best way to approach them". We tried a similar game plan in the earlier meeting and it nearly worked - refined it and got it right. Yes, I can see a real case for sacking the coach and all his assistants at season's end.
-
What a GREAT win! Buddy's got a LONG way to go before he is even a shadow of Richo! :gotigers
CUB I want you to repeat those lines pre game from now on, it seemed to work lol

Spot on HT. Our most disciplined performance for the year IMO. We also played the whole 4 quarters for a change. Sure we did that too against Freo and the Eagles but to do it against a top 4 side was the most pleasing thing to come out of the game today. The Hawks did have the momentum of the game at times but we held our nerve and didn't go into panic mode.

I thought we were very good today, lots of good signs, unfortunately freo didnt fire a shot against st kilda, we need to finish the season well with wins against freo & melbourne.

Tribute to Tigers’ efficiency

Richmond’s stunning upset victory over second-placed Hawthorn at the MCG last Sunday was all the meritorious given the difference between the two teams in the inside-50 entry numbers on the day.
The Tigers had just 36 entries inside their forward 50 area, which was the equal fourth lowest total of any team in the competition this season. Hawthorn, in comparison, had 49 entries.
Despite this, however, Richmond was able to score 25 times from its 36 entries and conjure an impressive 29-point victory – 16.9 (105) to 10.16 (76).
There have been 27 occasions this season where teams have had less than 40 inside-50 entries in a game. Of those 27, just three have resulted in wins – Richmond last Sunday against Hawthorn, St Kilda (36) against Fremantle (40) in Round 13, and Port Adelaide (38) against Fremantle (51) in Round 10.
Interestingly, Richmond’s lowest inside-50 total for the ’08 season was in the Round 6 clash with Hawthorn at the MCG. On that occasion, the Tigers had 33 inside-50 entries, which was 24 less than the Hawks’ 57, but were beaten by only 12 points.
