2008 National Draft Selections
ROUND 1
MELBOURNE
Pick 1– Jack Watts
Sandringham Dragons – 196cm, 82kg
Athletic, strong-marking tall forward with pace who is an excellent shot on goal. Vic Metro U18 representative in 2008, winning Larke Medal and All-Australian honours. AIS-AFL Academy graduate. From Brighton Grammar.
WEST COAST
Pick 2 – Nicholas Naitanui
Swan Districts - 201cm, 94kg
High-leaping ruckman with outstanding pace, vertical leap and agility. Tackling is also a feature of his game. Dual All-Australian U18 team member, winning selection in 2007/08. AIS/AFL Academy graduate. From Midvale JFC.
FREMANTLE
Pick 3 – Stephen Hill
West Perth - 184cm, 69kg
Medium midfielder/defender with excellent pace and a raking left-foot kick. Can play inside or outside winning both contested and uncontested possessions, and his run and carry are a feature of his game. All-Australian U18 selection following NAB AFL U18 Championships. From Quinns Districts JFC.
PORT ADELAIDE
Pick 4 – Hamish Hartlett
West Adelaide – 184cm, 77kg
Medium midfielder who reads the game exceptionally well, has clean hands, vision and kicks the ball superbly. All-Australian U18 selection after standout performances for South Australia in the NAB AFL U18 Championships. From Edwardstown FC.
ESSENDON
Pick 5 - Michael Hurley
Northern Knights (Vic) 192cm, 92kg
The Bombers need some talls in the back-line with the retirement of Mal Michael and the likely retirement of Dustin Fletcher in the two years. Hurley fits the bill as the most highly credentialed key defender of recent years. Hurley’s strengths are his defensive spoiling, reading of the play, long kicking and versatility.
CARLTON
Pick 6 - Chris Yarran
Northern Knights (Vic) 180cm, 84kg
The Blues need to beef up their forward-line and Yarran is just the type of player they need. Dynamic around the goals and able with the evasive ability of Shaun Burgoyne, Yarran booted seven goals in Round 1 of the WAFL this year and ended the season as the premier Swan Districts’ leading goalkicker. There are still question marks over whether he can play in the midfield or if he’ll be purely a forward, but he’ll play AFL in 2009 and may give the Blues another option up forward that they desperately need.
BRISBANE
Pick 7 - Daniel Rich
Rich has been touted as a top-three pick from the start of the year so the Lions will be rapt to get his here. Rich is a dynamic midfielder with a booming left foot kick who has played in two senior WAFL premierships in the past two seasons. He was named All-Australian at under-18 level in both 2007 and 2008.
RICHMOND
Pick 8 - Tyrone Vickery
Sandringham Dragons (Vic) 200cm, 86kg
The Tigers were desperately hoping Vickery would slip through to pick eight. Another of the highly touted crop of talls in this year’s Draft, Vickery missed 2007 with a knee reconstruction but has put together some outstanding performances this year off a limited preparation. He is a ruckman who has shown that he can go forward and have an impact.
NORTH MELBOURNE
Pick 9 - Jack Ziebell
Murray Bushrangers (Vic) 188cm, 84kg
Ziebell is a tough onballer who is versatile enough to play forward or back. A future leader who was named in the under-18 All-Australian team in 2008. Strong overhead for his size, Ziebell’s work at the stoppages and ability to push forward and kick goals make him very highly regarded.
ADELAIDE
Pick 10 - Phil Davis
North Adelaide (SA), 192cm, 83kg
Davis missed most of 2008 with injury but is still highly rated by many, with his marking and ability to read the play his strengths. He is also capable of going forward but will be a long-term project player.
COLLINGWOOD
Pick 11 - Steele Sidebottom
Murray Bushrangers (Vic) 182cm, 79kg
Sidebottom was the talk of the town after his 10-goal haul in the TAC Cup grand final but may slide down the order slightly because of the strength of this year’s top group of players. A goal-kicking midfielder with elite kicking skills, Sidebottom is also strong overhead for his size and a good reader of the play.
SYDNEY
Pick 12 - Lewis Johnson
North Adelaide (SA), 192cm, 87kg
The Swans need to start planning for life after Barry Hall and they haven’t taken a key forward in the National Draft since 1999. Johnston is a powerful, leading forward who took 16 contested marks at this year’s U18 Championships, six more than any other player.
ST KILDA
Pick 13 - Tom Lynch
Sandringham Dragons (Vic) 191cm, 84kg
At 192cm Lynch is best suited up forward but can also push up into the midfield where he could play as a tall wingman. Strong overhead and with good endurance, Lynch played alongside Jack Watts both at Sandringham and Vic Metro in 2008.
WESTERN BULLDOGS
Pick 14 - Ayce Cordy (father-son selection)
Geelong Falcons (Vic) 202cm, 77kg
Cordy missed most of 2008 with a shoulder reconstruction yet was still always certain to end up at the Bulldogs under the father-son rule. He ended up being taken with their first selection, No.14 overall, but would likely have been a top 10 pick if available on the open market. The 202cm Cordy will take a long time to develop but given his mobility for his size and overall potential, he is the Bulldogs’ best young ruck hope since Luke Darcy’s career began in the mid-1990s.
GEELONG
Pick 15 - Mitchell Brown
Sandringham Dragons (Vic) 195cm, 82kg
The Cats will be keen to bolster their key forward stocks and after a strong end to 2008 in the TAC Cup for Sandringham, Brown may be a good fit. He averaged 14 disposals and six marks in his seven games for the Dragons this year and has grown to a hefty 195cm.
HAWTHORN
Pick 16 - Ryan Schoenmakers
Norwood (SA), 189cm, 85kg
Schoenmakers is a tall one who can play forward or back but is most likely to end up as a Travis Cloke-type. His kicking ranks as elite and he was a regular goalkicker at SANFL reserves level this year.
PRIORITY ROUND
MELBOURNE
Pick 17 - Sam Blease
Eastern Ranges (Vic) 183cm, 72kg
Blease brings pace to the midfield. He’s still young and has a long way to go but when the ball is in his hands something special always happens. He set alight the Telstra Dome with two breathtaking goals in the final of the U18 Championships against W.A. this year.
WEST COAST
Pick 18 - Luke Shuey
Oakleigh Chargers (Vic) 185cm, 84kg
Shuey is one of the leading inside midfielders of the Draft, averaging four tackles and five clearances per game in the TAC Cup this year for Oakleigh.
ROUND 2
MELBOURNE
Pick 19 - James Strauss
Oakleigh Chargers (Vic) 185cm, 81kg
The Demons may be looking to add some pace and run to their half back-line, and Strauss fits the bill. He plays the modern game, highlighted by his ability to play as an outside wingman or running defender which is an area the Demons are currently lacking.
WEST COAST
Pick 20 - Tom Swift
Claremont (WA) 190cm, 84kg
Swift is a 191cm midfielder who has missed most of the past two years with knee injuries. The Eagles need some natural ball-winners to replace the likes of Judd and with Swift they definitely have that. He has a freakish ability to find the ball, highlighted by his tally of an amazing 109 disposals in three games at the 2006 U16 Championships which included one game where he racked up 45.
FREMANTLE
Pick 21 - Hayden Ballantyne
Ballantyne scored 75 goals in the WAFL this year and is a mature-age recruit ready for AFL action in 2008. He’s only small (175cm) but has great goal sense, can push up into the midfield and was rarely beaten this year. He’s the perfect replacement for the retired Jeff Farmer.
ADELAIDE
Pick 22 – Jackson Trengrove
Calder Cannons, 196cm, 88kg
Athletic tall who can play at both ends of the ground or in the ruck. Shows good endurance, speed and agility for a tall, and is good in one-on-one contests. AIS-AFL Academy graduate and member of Vic Metro U18 squad in 2008. From PEGS.
ESSENDON

Interesting that only Sydney has less quantity of picks than us with three and only Geelong and the Dogs have the same amaount (4). Every other club has between 5 and 8.
Stripes
-
If they use them all
-
The difference between us and Sydney is that Sydney need youth and therefore the picks, with our young side we dont necessarily need a host of picks.
If the Swans played on a decent size home ground there would almost certainly be a change in their recruiting policy IMO.
-
Adam Thomson acts as another pick for us. Three years in a row we have traded away our 3rd pick - Polak, Morton an now Thomson.
-
Given Port's poor financial position at the moment I wouldn't be surprised if they go a player or two short on their senior list for 2009
-

Yeah funny isnt it, I wonder if they did some sort of analysis on 3rd round picks and their likelihood to "make it" as AFL footballers or it was just a persons view that a 3rd rounder isn't worth that much for a more advanced player with potential.
Then again it could be just coincidence and it what was needed to get the trade done on a required player.

I think you're right Chuck and we targeted a specific player type. Up to us to judge over time between Polak vs Houli, Morton vs Sam Reid (Dogs) and Thomson vs pick 42 this draft.

It's about to start ...
SEN presuming it'll be between Rich and Vickery for Richmond.

Jaydyn Post
Tall, athletic key position player who can play at either end of the ground. Is good overhead, reads the game well and is a neat kick. Jayden led the league in contested and uncontested marks in the 2008 TAC Cup season. and was one of the most consistent tall players in the TAC Cup. His most dominant performance came in a final when he gathered 35 possessions and took 18 marks. His outstanding season culminated in him winning the Western Jets' Best and Fairest in 2008. Jayden attended the Victorian NAB AFL state screening session where he recorded a time of 3.02sec for the 20m test and 14.1 for the beep test.

Didnt see Cousin's name at all. He still has a chance at the PSD though doesnt he. I want to laugh at whatever club takes him as long as its not RFC the i would be :banghead :chuck
-
Why does a club spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on recruiting and administrative staff whose jobs are to go find kids and then they only pick 2 kids ... and a recycled.
I have a newsflash for Steve Wright, If you wanna save some money, sack your recruiters and your recruiting/football admin staff, and on the day of the draft take afew dollars to the local newsagency and theyll give you a couple of newspapers which list the top 20 or 30 players. Go to the draft, take a pen and just run the line through the players that get called out, Youll save our club an absolute bundle!
-
Hislop is the only pick I'm not convinced on - happy with the first two - Post gives us another potential option up forward with Hughes and Reiwoldt, and Vickery was the best available at 8 as well as filling another need. I hope we have done our homework very very well on Hislop, otherwise we have wasted a pick at 58.
-
After they got Thomson, there was no need for another recycled. I rekcon they recruited hislop because Wallace is in the last year of his contract.

You're probably right, Ramps, the draft is just a lottery
The last two rising stars chosen respectively at pick no. 7
Me I'm disappointed in Vickery. Maybe a good potential player, but two knee recos? Not worth the risk IMO.

Im only aware of 1 knee reconstruction not 2 for Vickery. Hopefully it is only the one. He seems to have gotten over it. What disappoints me most is that the club knows that over the next 2 or so years concessions to the Gold Coast are going to take there toll on the draft pool .... and they produce what they produced today. I would sack them all.

wallace being removed from the decision making process of drafting has seen a marked idfference in our drafting objectives immediately.
From being considered a lighteweight soft football club we have added some serious talent with a very hard edge.
Vickery is a godsend for richmond, a genuine ruckman, whose skills below his knees are just ELITE. Great contested mark and elite disposal skills as well. The best thing about young tyrone is that he has a tinge of genuine nastiness about him, very very hard at the football and loves to tackle. Tyrone could also make it as a genuine A grade forward, he has elite speed and a great shot for goal. The fans are gunna love vickery I guarantee it.
Hislop and Thomson are genuine inside grunt players with solid bodies and elite ball winning ability.
Post reads the game as well as Joel Bowden does but is 194cm as is versatile and athletic enough to play anywhere on the ground.
We will put a dozen juniors through there paces and decide on a pre-season draft.
For the first time in living memory we now have balanced list
VIVA craig Cameron.

Fact
lol
I dont get why we spend money on recurting, get special software to evaluate them etc. This draft was suposed to be very deep and the last full draft for years yet we get two kids only.
We must be ultra confident in the midfiled we have and that we Cogs will come back strong.
I am confused to be honest.

Only one reco Moi and he has demonstrated that he has come back successfully and unhindered. I have no problems at all picking him up at 8 - he was touted Top 4 - and he definitely adds to the overall structure of our list.

Yes, his bio sounds fantastic, I hope he will be okay.
I'm just a bit nervous that's all lol

For me this offseason in terms of player attainment has been a waste of time for Richmond. Thomson was reasonable for the price and Vickery was good, we didnt have alot ofpicks and then picked an overage kid from the TAC Cup who seems to be a CHB of which we have several and another recycled ... and we still have blokes like Pettifer and King on the list. Dear oh Dear ... this has been a poor offseason recruiting wise . :banghead
-
Hey Ramps, did you get a knockback last night? ;D
Seriously though, I don't think we did badly at all. We only had 4 picks, we didn't need a massive overhaul, we picked up 2 kids (1 of which was the best available at 8 and was touted as possible Top 4) who both fill a need or deficiency in our list structure and we picked up 2 ex-Top 10 hard at it midfielders (at the ripe old ages of 21 and 22) who might just have been round pegs in square holes at their previous clubs. And by passing with the last pick I believe the club has been very smart in giving itself more time to look at options for the pre-season draft - any types that we were unsure of can now be invited to train with us and then more informed decisions made in mid-December. A good call by the club. I believe the football department is quite happy with where our list structure sits at the moment and we have filled gaps with very promising types - what we need now is some 'grooming' (tweaking and time) rather than continual large scale personnel changes. Let our kids develop for another year and we are likely to have some tradebait (for a pleasant change) come next October that we can use to get a pick or 2 from the Gold Coast. These can then be used to top our list up with quality kids and thats the most important thing for our current structure and direction.
Overall I give us a 6.5 to 7 out of 10 for today - we were never going to change the world with 4 picks.

how do you measure Post as an average player when he has taken 50 more marks than any other kid in the U18...never let the facts get in the way.. :shh
-
Post exhibits good run and can take a grab, but we already have a number of players who can play similar roles in key defensive posts. IMHO we didnt need another CHB we needed a key forward.
-
The full draft selections are now in the first post of this thread.

What a let down :(. It started off brilliantly picking up Vickery and I'm going to give Post the benefit of the doubt as I'm happy we've gone tall to balance up our list but it all went downhill after that dreadfully. What makes it poor is we had already overpaid and traded away our 3rd round pick for a fringe recycled player who can't kick and as it turns out we missed out on Mitch Banner who was picked up at that pick :scream. Now we go for another recycled player with our 4th round pick and there's still a chance we'll pick up Cockshell in the PSD. That's definitely 2 and possibly 3 recycled players from just 5 picks and just 2 kids from the last untampered draft :banghead :help.
Just looking at other clubs who unlike us rightly put their faith in the draft, Port killed it - Hartlett, Trengove, Broadbent, Banner and Jarrad Redden.

Id caution getting too carried away with glossy selections on draft day my friend, all cars look good as they drive out of the yard, however as we all know too well , only classics hold their value...I shouldn't need to remind of the fizzers like Meyer and JON to underline my point...Hislop has as much chance of realising his talents as any other two bit bum selected at 50+
-
Good Points MT , PA will also pick up someone to replace Thompson - Carr. How come we cant get rid of our rejects.
Now I am a little less excited (hey Ramps) its not that bad, really great prospects with our first two- really good picks - love Vickery, feel it in my bones.Thank God the others didn't need a ruckman, but I suspect he will plat CHF like Buddy , Benny Gale etc
Thompson - not convinced, we have Cogs and Collins to come along
Hislop - same as above -got a long way to prove himself, sounds like a DH
MMM, WTF lets get Cuz as long as he has to pay for his own policing(like BuddY),rehab and testing with a zero level policy- you would owe us not the other way around - sack him with no bucks if he stuffs up policy. What do you reckon Sheeds , Ricky Cuz. You would need to teach our kids good things!
In the rockie draft our recruiters need to redeem themselves and pick some really good kids. Would suggest they go for bottom aged kids, please not to many more recycled as the just don't cut where the kids just keep coming good.
Am I awake or am I just having a bad dream

Snoozing. :D
As has been said before, bottom aged kids cannot be rookied. They have to be 18+ yo.

How the papers rated our draft choices:
Age - Emma Quayle
I’m surprised the Tigers only took the three picks. They’ll be very happy with Vickery and Post has some work to do on his kicking but is a marking machine and not afraid to run. Hislop has doubtless talent, but can he get himself on track? Not many delisted players become stars elsewhere, but he has every chance if he gets things together.

Herald-Sun
Wanted the tall Vickery and were thrilled to get their man with Pick 8. Post won the Western Jets best and fairest and will be given time. Hislop had off field issues at Essendon, but could be a real bonus. Will probably take another youngster in the pre-season draft.

The draft was good for Richmond - not great. We were a few picks off picking up Trengrove - this would've been a massive bonanza for the club.
The Youtube clips of Post look promising, he may need to work on his kicking but I saw a guy prepared to kick on either foot which is a good start.
He is clearly a good mark - I hope his work ethic to get to enough contests enables him to leverage this talent at AFL level. It is an ethic sadly lacking in Jay Shultz.
Vickery, Vickery a winning find. He looks ready to play some part next year.
I don't get the Hislop call - Sheedy?
I don't get the no pick call - Cousins???? Sheedy????
Maybe Sheedy started a discussion at that lunch the other day that won't be resolved until after the draft.
-
Maybe Sheedy started a discussion at that lunch the other day that won't be resolved until after the draft.
What is the consensus on Sheedy he seems to be portrayed as either some all conquering football legend/guru or the undercurrent is that he is becoming a senile old man?
Whichever I hope he stays out of the football dept operations business as I don't believe he has an agenda there for his current role
-
There always seemed to be some at Richmond who were Sheedy groupies lol when he was coaching Essendon. Sheeds was was great coach and spotter of talent in the past but the game has passed him by now in both departments. Essendon's list went backwards in his last 5 years there topping up and picking duds like Kepler Bradley and Johns. Anyway he's at Richmond to help us boost membership and publicise the club off-field. He thinks out there often lol so for all know the Cousins comments may have been a deliberate way to get Richmond in the paper because he knew a journo would be lurking at the THC dinner.

Hislop does bj but to do so he needs to get his head right, quit the booze and do it quickly if he wants an AFL career.

Nice of the media to drop this comment in on an article about Yarran.

His mother Deb is likely to move across with him to Melbourne after raising Chris with four other children while father Malcolm serves a jail term in Perth.
It would be probably be common knowledge but still ::)

Fleming was 25, Hudson was 32, Nicholls was 24 and Blumfield was 26. You can't compare the 2 situations - this time our 2 recycled are still kids and they have (potentially) addressed gaps in our list structure. Unbalancing our list was also caused by picking the wrong kids over those few seasons, not only older top-up players. The list only maintains it's structure if your kids are good enough to hang around and with this draft I think the club has thought long and deep, and come up with a very good outcome for the longer term.

We will pick up another 5-6 untried kids over the December and rookie draft - that will make 7-8 first timers on our list.
Its no longer relevant to judge our drafting on what happens in November, ask Foley, Thursty, Moore and White.
-
We need to focus on KPP forwards and finding a goalkicking forward pocket type. We have a pretty balanced list otherwise, we just need some forwards and then to add as much class as possible to the side as time goes on.

That's true you need to take the whole trade/draft period into account when judging recruiting but even so that's 4 successes out of the past six post-National drafts. Now 4 is better than nothing and they are bonus pick-ups but it's not a return you can rely on long term at the expense of the National draft where you're more likely to find kids who will make it.
IMO with the Gold Coast and Western Sydney about to rip the guts out the National draft from 2010 onwards it is important that we pick up say 6 kids in the 2009 National draft onto top of any rookies so we still have best talented youth we can get our hands on coming through behind the young developing crop we already have. Picking up only 2-3 in 2009 would mean we've only added about 8 kids in 3 drafts. That's not enough when compared to other clubs who will have added say 18 kids in that time. Remember only about a half the kids even the better recruiting clubs draft end up making it. To obtain sustained success you need a list that sustains over time and doesn't end up with age gaps.

21: Deledio (84), Graham (2), White (38), JON (9)
20: Hislop (7), Collins (-), Connors (8 ), Edwards (32), Riewoldt (26)
19: Putt (-), Post (-), Rance (-)
18: Cotchin (15), Vickery (-)
22 players under 22yoa or younger, with PSD / rookies to come.
Lots of kids and a fairly good spread I would have though. Don't think it makes a massive differece Thomson and Hislop are 22 and 20 instead of both 18.

22 player our of 40 odd under 22 is a great basis for the future I would say. This is before we pick up another 5/6 in the Rookie & PSD too! Add another 10 next year (4 National draft picks & 6 Rookies) and we could have over 3/4 of our list under 23!!! Now that is a great platform to build a premiership from.

To pick only 2 kids is a disgrace.
We picked 4 kids with 1 more to come.
2 kids, 2 recycled with 1 more to come.
Reminds me of the years 2001/2002 when we neglected the draft and got the likes of Blumfield, Nichols, Fleming, etc and neglected youth which unbalanced the age of our list some 7-8 years later.
This club persists with short cut recruiting and never learns.
Unbalance of ages of our list?

I don't think those concerned aren't talking about the next 4-5 years as far as the senior side goes. It's just past that phase when that U22 list will be the core of the side. Remember not all those young cubs will make it and be around in 6 years time. If we were to again pick up only 2-3 kids next year followed by the Gold Coast and Western Sydney draining the best kids of the 2010-12 drafts then we would be exposing our list to the potential risk of thinning out in the middle age bracket come 2014-5. I know it's a long way off and anything can happen in the future but you are really drafting now for then. We need to pick up 5-6 kids in next year's National draft to sustain the youth factory we've got going and to do some smart trading with the new teams in exchange for high picks to keep the best talent arriving at Punt Rd.

In 2015 Hislop will be 27.
A 5th round draft pick 18 year old kid would have been 25.
Not a massive difference.

If either or both of them are still around.
It's not just about taking picks, you also have to consider 'knowns' when you can and with Hislop there are 'knowns' in that he can compete at the top level. The unknown is if he can mature and develop enough to compete regularly enough. With a 'fresh' pick you don't have that luxury so in the case of a former high pick with some demonstrated form at only 2 years older it becomes a risk management exercise. The Hislop pick wins every time.
