Wayne Campbell drops out of Richmond coaching race
Mike Sheahan | July 14, 2009 11:59am
RICHMOND assistant coach and former captain Wayne Campbell has withdrawn from the race for the senior coaching job next year.
Campbell, 36, told club president Gary March and head of football Craig Cameron last night he needed more time learning the complexities of the coaching business.
"I just think I'm not quite ready," he told the Herald Sun.
"I reckon I'm about 80 per cent, and that's nowhere near enough. It's just such a full-on job."
Campbell, contracted to the club for next year, said he wanted to continue as an assistant under the next coach.
"In the last few weeks, I just got a feeling I wasn't 100 per cent prepared," he said.
"What I've done so far has been a bit of a rush. It's time to take a deep breath."
Campbell was a part-time coach at the Western Bulldogs in 2007, full time in 2008 and returned to Punt Rd for the 2009 season. He said he made his decision believing it would end his dream of coaching his old club.
"My ambition to coach the Richmond Football Club is gone," Campbell said.
It was an assessment based on his belief the Tigers would appoint a coach who would finally bring success to the club that has languished at or near the bottom for much of the past 25 years.
Campbell played 297 games in yellow and black from 1991-2005. He was captain from 2001-04 and won four best and fairest awards.

Campbell pulls out of running
Michael Gleeson and Jake Niall | July 15, 2009
FORMER Richmond champion player and current assistant coach Wayne Campbell has pulled out of the running to be the Tigers' next senior coach, while the club has told Dean Laidley it wants to interview him for the role.
Campbell, a four-time Jack Dyer Medal winner and captain of the club for four years, was one of the favourites to get the job and was poached from the Bulldogs as a possible successor to Terry Wallace.
"I don't think I am completely ready so I don't think it would have been fair to Richmond for me to proceed," Campbell said.
"I think I am 80 per cent ready to coach so I think that is not the right thing for the Richmond Footy Club, or for me, to proceed because this is one of the more vital decisions the club will ever have.
"I want to help the club long-term and still want to be involved and I look forward to staying on and working with whoever is appointed. I know the quality of prospective coaches is very, very strong so whoever we get will be the right person to coach the club, I am sure of that."
Campbell said he recognised his decision to withdraw meant he may never get the opportunity to be the senior coach of the club, but he was comfortable with that.
"It was a difficult decision because of what Richmond means to me but my gut feeling was I was not ready so in that sense it was an easy decision," Campbell said.
"I wanted to go for it, I think I could have done the job well but I think you need to be able to do the job really, really well.
"It is an unbelievably hard and demanding job … I know you need to have a broad knowledge of a lot of things and there's a lot of different skills involved and there were a few things I wanted more experience of before I felt ready. I want to study (a management course) and travel and better prepare myself.
"I know it means I may never get the opportunity to do that job and that is fine. My ambition to coach Richmond is something that's probably gone now really and that is OK, because my loyalty is to Richmond.
"You feel like you have to do everything in a rush but I am only 36.
"I am not sure if 10 years as an assistant is better than five years but I think there are some things I just need to be in the job as an assistant for longer for. I just think it is a good time to take a breath and and say 'I am going to be in this for a long time, what is the rush'?"
Campbell is the second favourite son to withdraw from the Tigers coaching process in days after Kevin Sheedy pulled out at the weekend. Campbell's decision has none of the resentment that accompanied Sheedy's.

Good move
If you're not confident in yourself, how are we supposed to be.
Do what Knighta did and get some experience

So who would like to see coach the Tigers next year?
-
Thank the mother of Geez for this one.
-
Woooohoooo!!!
That has just made my week, maybe even the rest of the season for me.
If Campbell wants to coach Richmond so bad then he needs to spend some time coaching his own side at a lower level to success, or at a bare minimum be an assistant coach at a premiership club. He needs to find out what it takes to win a flag before he can be expected to lead others to one. There's no guarantee that our new coach will see success in the next few years so if he goes away and does this for a couple of years then he can come back as an assistant again and may then be rightfully the #1 candidate to take over the job.
-
in a way im proud of Campbell for not going for it.
Unlike others who will take any job he put the club first by admitting he is not ready.
good on him.
NEXT to withdraw will be one NATHAN BUCKLEY

I think that it is good that Campbell had the balls to say he isn't ready for the job.
If he feels this way and took it on all it would get us is what we have now.

spot on mate. i say well done to Campbell. No hidden agenda's like Sheeds just a real honest assesment that he is not ready.
he deserves all the credit he deserves for pulling out.
he puts the club first like he did when he pulled short his career just to reach that 300 club
-
Well done to Wayne for having the dignity to pull out after realising he is not the right person for the role. After reading his comments and him saying that he is only 80% confident he could do the role it makes we wonder what could have happened. Imagine Wayne going into the role 80% sure of himself, the players would sense this and we are back at square one. I do hope that Wayne stays on as an assistant coach though under the new coach as I believe he still has something to offer.
Jackstar, Wayne pulling out has nothing to do with what you call a "basket case" club. We are not a basket case and as far as Longmire goes, he wants the Roos and thats that mate it's nothing to do with our club or your percieved impressions of our club. There is still a long list of extremely highly qualified candidates that will go through the process. Those candidates wan't to coach this great club of our's just as we as supporters love to follow this great club through thick and thin....... well mopst of us.... :thumbsup

Great courage Campbell to say "I'm not ready yet".
Put the CLub first for that he deserve a helluva lot of respect :clapping

I take Wayne Campbell on his word Jack - if he says he isn't ready, then he isn't ready. To think or suggest thoerwise is a slight on Wayne's character I would argue

No problem with them looking at Mick and Leigh - I would be much much more disappointed if they didn't. That's the purpose of the process - explore all the possibilities and make the best informed choice possible.
And re: Campbell - well done, showed a lot of character and honesty (that many on here have accused him of not having).

I was wrong about Campbell, the fact that he understands his shortcomings makes him a true pro in my book :thumbsup

I didnt think March has anything to do with the process until such time that the committee puts the selected names to the board for recommendation. Dont tell me Jack that March is lying to us all?????

you got more chance of Jack going out on a date with Moi than that of ever happening.

Is there zero chance that people in higher places gave Campbell the chance to save face here?
If it was Campbell's decision then well done to him. It would be nice if he was considered, and considered good enough, to continue his role as an assistant.

And fraudsters like Jack think you need to be an insider to figure out what's going on.
Just commense sense will get you there.
Good post :thumbsup

I'll be honest I never wanted Campbell as coach as I felt he had not done the appropriate apprenticeship.
However he has recognised this and forfeited his application to the job and shown some guts. I can only hope that he continues to serve his apprenticeship whether at Punt Rd or elsewhere and one day he will have the experience for a senior coaching job.
-
perhaps he didnt make the next round of the "PROCESS". :lol

Campbell pulls out of running
Campbell is the second favourite son to withdraw from the Tigers coaching process in days after Kevin Sheedy pulled out at the weekend. Campbell's decision has none of the resentment that accompanied Sheedy's.
Say what you like about Campbell but he did this the right way. I doubt he would've ever got the senior job but at least he didn't pull a Sheedy and say "Well if you don't want me you can stick it!"
Give it 6 months - Sheedy will be on the first train outta Richmond and he'll be the next KB, holding a grudge against Richmond for no reason other than a sting in his own ego!
-
Good on Cambo for putting the club first and wanting to gain more experience first. At the very least it shows he is willing to made the hard calls even on himself.
Not the RFC's fault but you can see in two years time if we haven't made the finals despite a young developing list, the media will make a big deal about Cambo being a coach in waiting ::).

From the Herald-Sun....
Growing family helps tip scales
By Chris de Kretser and Daryl Timms
Thurs 16 JUL 2009, Page 81
THE impending arrival of a baby could have helped prompt Wayne Campbell to pull out of the running for the Richmond coaching job.
Campbell and his wife Sarah are expecting their second child in about four weeks.
With two young children, Campbell, 36, might have felt he couldn't devote his full attention to coaching.
In announcing his withdrawal on Tuesday, Campbell said he was not quite ready to take on the senior coaching role.
"I reckon I'm about 80 per cent, and that's nowhere near enough,'' he said. "It's just such a full-on job.''
-
Does he have a boy for the father son rule yet?? Damn Hird has given the bombers 3! ;)
-
Wright on Cambo .....
What is certain is that former club great and current assistant coach Wayne Campbell won't be part of that group after pulling out of the interview process.
Campbell was considered a warm favourite to win the job before his shock withdrawal, but Wright said there was no disappointment at his decision behind the scenes.
"If he felt that he probably needed a little bit more time then that's a matter for him. I think it's a mark of the man," he said.
"There's no point in putting your hand up if you don't think you're ready and Wayne, give him credit, in his view thought that it wasn’t the right time for him.
"He's working with the club and he's a really, really good assistant coach who is great around the facility. I think it's the mark of the man that he put the club first."

Campbell went up lots in the estimations of many. To be honest I reckon this act has guaranteed him a coaching gig sometime into the future. Good move from campbo.

Agree Ramps. Very shrewdly he has managed to mark his CV with a "Ready" stamp when the job he really covets is available. And that could still very well be Richmond in a few years.
