Why is everyone so excited after yesterdays win. Ive seen this movie so many times its not funny. A cheap meaningless win. And this time it was against
1) A team that had no interchange in the last quarter - Zero players on the bench
2) A team that only had 17 fit players on the ground for the last 10 minutes of the match
3) A team that is almost as bad as us and thats reflected by there position on the ladder
4) Our team included blokes who wont be playing beyond this season.
The ramifications of wins like this could be disastrous. West Coast are clearly tanking. Melbourne wont win 5 games this season. North is shot and Freo could start to tank if they see the season slipping. If we arent smart we could end up in 12th position but only with pick 7 as our first pick in the national draft. People are jumping up and down, supposedly happy, but once again we will all be crying as our opponents get the best junior players and we end up with players like JON. Its not worth it ... and last night wasnt worth it, winning by 3 points against that team in those circumstances- is not in the best interests of RFC.
-
Because it was momentarily uplifting
And in a year of absolute carnage, we needed it :thumbsup
-
most of there injuries were soft caused by lack of heart and over inflated head, eg headland
they had 3 injuries, we had 2 . they were at home , we were away
gutsy win, and we will be better for it
-
Exactly
The win highlights why we have been so poor in 25 years.
Cheap meaningless wins that prove NOTHING.
End up with dud draft picks whilst others around secure the Scully and Butcher's of this world.
Blues did and they are flying whilst aanother mid table finish will see us in no man's land.
Last uncompromised draft and with a new coach to be announced, March should be demanding the kids be played not rubbish individuals like Simmonds who cant even hold a sentence let alone a mark
-
I'm certainly not excited about the win and would like to make 4 or more changes to the side as we normally would after a loss.
The senior players, except for Cousins, were ALL a liablity last night and produced nothing a kid couldn't do, especially with Rance & Graham coming back.
If we'd run out the end of the 3rd quarter and 4th quarter like we did in the first 25 mins of the 3rd quarter, then I'd feel a lot better. The fact we struggled to fall over the line against a team with at times no interchange players looked like we were trying to lose but couldn't even do that right.
It feels nice to get the 4 points and it feels good to win a close one, but the reality is we didn't win against much. I'm hardly going to rant on like daniel161 who thinks it's pointless though as we can still win 2 more and get the extra pick.
We MUST drop Simmonds, Brown & Bowden!!!
-
If we had won and say Vickery, Post and Rance had been in instead of Brown, Simmonds and Bowden, then Id say fair enough, the Kids won and the Kids need to learn how to win, but winning with the side we won with in those circumstances isnt helpful to our future. Winning against a team that had no bench and was playing 17 v 18 for the last 10 minutes on the field ... just isnt going to help us in the longer term.

not wrong about the last sentence although Bowden was the one who delivered the pass to Morton who kicked the winning goal.
Infamy we will be having this conversation after we beat the Eagles in 2 weeks, make no mistake about that. Another meaningless win coming with the same old retirees leading the way, Simmonds, Brown and Bowden.
Our forward is so non existent at the moment and Jack needs help so how people would not prefer a Butcher in that forward line is beyond me.
PLAY THE KIDS FFS AND IF WE WIN WITH THEM SO BE IT BUT THIS IS POINTLESS AND PROVES NOTHING.
-
Yeah Ramps come on mate, why can't we just say what a great win, or do you like losing every week????

I fully understand where your coming from and last night I was elated that we won, but in whole light of day, thinking about the ramifications of it all ... I just feel like winning these types of games where the opposition is as bad as us and that they were playing short for long periods of the game ... I just sense that these wins again will bite us on the arse.

One play in the whole game should not mean a player keeps his spot. I remember watching and was absolutely gobsmacked that he took posession of the ball and instantly started running FORWARD. Shame the game needs to be in the balance for him to start doing what he should be all the time. He played in defence and barely touched the ball, I constantly saw him standing 5-10m off a player who marked in the Freo forward 50. With Rance coming in, Bowden should make way.

I agree we should play the kids, however I wouldn't assume we will beat West Coast just yet, we struggled to beat a pretty average team who were out on their feet at the end of the game.

Who cares, you play footy to win not for draft picks!!!

Yes Rance to make way for Bowden, that part is very true.
I want them all out, if that means Richo too then so be it.
It does nothing for us to see these has beens running around.
Just one thing Infamy you cant be serious we wont beat the Eagles. They are tanking and with possibly no Kerr we will beat them convincingly and leave us again in no man's land.

I think it's pretty stupid to just assume we'll win, Wallace has admitted he won't be here next year, he may not even be coach then
Who's to know we won't be tanking ourselves?
Rance for Bowden & Graham for Simmonds should be the easy decisions.

Are you peeed or something? :lol
-
As long as Cousins, cotch and our other midfielders stay fit you should resign yourself to winning 3 or more extra games for the year..
-
We could beat any team if we decide to play a full game like the 3rd quarter apart form the freeo comeback part that is.
And I do agee that this was a good win though I thought we had lost it but glad to say we didn't.
Now to the one who have said those 3 that should be dropped being Simmonds, Brown & Bowden. Agree fully.
Too unaccountable last night.
And thank F we won. I am so happy today.

We won with Tambling, Deledio, Collins, Morton and Foley having great games. Thats more of our future then any draft pick at this stage. You cannot keep going for draft picks and throwing away talent because you won't put in the effort to develop them.
You know what, Im glad that Post, Vickery etc. aren't playing, and I'd be glad if they don't play one single game for the RFC this year. Look at how Collins, Rance and Gus (nahas can also be in this cateogry) have all come in and had great starts to their careers after they played a large portion of their first couple of years in the reserves, even though all three of them at one stage could have warranted a call-up. You play Deledio/Tambling to early and they take 3 odd years to start blossoming etc. Give them time to develop their skills and their understanding of the game so when they eventually debut they are ready, and not thrown straight in the deep in to see if they can swim. Confidence is a massive thing in young players, give them time to develop it.
Sure you can look at the negatives - and their are many, but lets be honest. We all want three senior players to go after a win cause they played bad. What does that say about our young crop?

Draft wise we could get 2 18 19 35 51 but if we dont tank we could end up with 7 23 39 55 ... which set of numbers would be better for our future?
The draft is a lottery along with injuires, the draw etc etc etc. Pick 2 could be dud and pick 7 end up special, who knows.
D.Rich pick 7 this season is a great point in case.
Oh this is perfect place to put one of new favourite quotes
The past is History,
The futures a mystery
Today is a gift, thats why they call it the present.
Enjoy the win Guys, I know I did (after I recoverd from my heart attack)
I would rather take a few wins, maybe keep a few extra members because of them. Even though I follow the team THOUGH the losses I dont follow them FOR the losses. I would like to go into each game thinking we have a chance of winning, what is the point otherwise.

not sure if you understand but we have played 2 finals series in 26 odd years. THATS 2
we have thrown away draft picks not kept them.
all i am saying is if maybe just maybe once we decide to rebuild and stockpile our last chance at a descent draft then you might find the new coach has plenty to work with.
We as a football club have always been happy with performances like last night without looking at the biggeer picture.
Fluffy, Rich slipped through to 7 because it was a deep draft, this is not. High draft picks are worth gold this year.
That being said many positives have come from last night's win e.g tambling, Lids, Connors and jackson.
Problem is next week its back to normal against the Saints so where does that leave you again. NOWHERE.

There will still be quality in the first round and the top 5-6 will be very very good.
Strangely enough, the years we've finished bottom have been the weak drafts where you actually need to finish bottom to get good players. In stronger drafts when we've finished higher you can still get a very good player picks as the depth is there all while getting wins on the board.

You have a valid point no doubt about it. But we are somewhere, not NOWHERE. Gus, Collo, Deledio, Tambling, Foley, McGuane, Rance, Jackson, Nahas, Reiwoldt, Morton, Moore, Thursfield, Cotchin, Polo, Post, Vickery, Gourdis, BrownE, Thomson, Hislop, Edwards, Pattison and Putt on your list (without adding Guys like Richo, Cuz, Tuck Coughlan) and some draft picks tells me that if the coaching stuff of the upcoming years are the right ones and can develop and motivate players to develop then our team in 2-3 years time will be very good. I look at that list, compare it to teams like the Roos, the Dees, Freo and realize that we are, despite all our obvious flaws this season, in some realm of good for the future. Sure, not all those players will make it but again, we have young guys with some potential on our list - lets develop it and develop it in the right way. Cause you know what, 2 Finals in 26 years is crap, but it will take longer if we take shortcuts. Like I said, I think its a great win with no Richo and Symonds, Brown and Bowden being spuds. Thats why I like the win.
-
Why cant people just enjoy a win.....even if its just for 24 hours.
Didn't realise we had to finish the season with a 1-21 win loss record.....What a treat that would of been.
I just want to warn people that another horrible victory is looming in a fortnight.

Winning not only keeps the player and us supporters happy but it also keep our sponsors there.
So if we are happy with winning then this has to be good.
A bloody win is good for everyone at the club and those who say it was against a team that was down.
So bloody what we won just get that, and this will answer your question.
Winning help and losing keep others away. Like sponsors and future members to as well as keeping the old members if it came down to it.
-
I had money on the Tigers last night so I am particularly happy we got the win! :thumbsup The only problem is is that it means nothing in the big scheme of things. Do you think we will remember that win in 3 years time - doubtful but we will remember the 10 year players that helped us be a consistently great side and win us a premiership. :pray
Yes win make us all happy, players, sponsors, coach, admin, everyone but if I just hope that at the end of the year if we get 5/6 wins and west coast and melbourne both get priority picks and our first pick is 6, we are just as happy.... :-\

Why is everyone so excited after yesterdays win. Ive seen this movie so many times its not funny. A cheap meaningless win.
stop kidding yourself with this self indulgent tripe and consider whether the likes of cotchin and Lids would like to lay downb for the remainder of the year...Yeah could imagine would do long term contract negotiations the world of good....LOSING is the EASY way out...NO BALLS to lay down....I dont for a minute support that attitude and I expect more from our supporter base than to effectively wish and applaud recurring LOSSES :banghead
-
good stuff bJ.
Its easy to say tank cos it's rewarding but,please......
-
ramps,
lets get a new coach so we can tank under him for another couple of years,
in which time ur master plan may come to fruition.
-
13 13 12 15 15 12 16 13 5 9 10 3 11 14
X's IQ test results. Uncannily, also Freo's finishing positions since day 1.
Losing is a cancer. You get nowhere with softc0cks. And telling impressionable young footballers its OK, even good, to lose is institutionally breeding softc0cks.
-
Having made the trip over yesterday and getting back this morning at 6.00am
I have to say I wou'dnt sawp the result for anything
With the year we have had, the crap w've put up with it was GREAT TO WIN
The majority of the team were on the same flight back - have to say it was a pleasant flight for a change :thumbsup
We dont' need to tank
Last night the major players of the draft class of 2004 stood up and I loved every minute of it.... we have a core group who on average are 20-22 y.o. they are our future and depsite the doom and gloom in the media they are not the worse going around.
Pick 2 or pick 6, 7 or 10 - it's a lottery and there no guarantees
-
Ramps' point is not so much about our first pick but moreso the prospect of losing the priority pick. 3 picks in the top 20 instead of just two (or even one if we now win our fair share in the next 12 weeks) is obviously a better scenario come draft time. It not only gives us a better opportunity to add more talented youth to our list which we need to strength our existing young core but it'll also give us greater flexibility to cut (senior) players not up it. It sucks that the draft system punishes winning by bottom 8 sides but that's the reality :scream. Ramps is just being pragmatic given the stupid draft rules and he's thinking about what is best for Richmond long term recruiting wise. I'm sure the new coach would love to have extra draft options to begin with.
Last night's win hasn't done any damage as far as losing a priority pick as we'll most likely be 2-9 at the halfway mark and the positive is the club gets a breather for a few weeks from the overzealous oppressive media and angry supporters wanting the club to react in the short-term. However, we only have 2 wins up our sleave now with the Eagles x2, Melbourne and North to come :-\. Honestly, is say 6 wins instead of 4 going to make us or the players feel any better come the November draft or round 1, 2010?
One other thing - players don't tank games; coaches and clubs however do tank. For example they play younger and inexperienced sides, or they give more gametime in the midfield to 2nd and 3rd tier younger mids, or younger rucks, or younger KPPs, or they play kids on gun opposition players, or they put senior players carrying niggles in cotton wool for the rest of the season. Whatever they do, it lessens the chances of winning while at the same time giving their youngsters more valuable AFL experience in an effort to accelerate their development for next year and beyond. So tanking in the AFL doesn't mean asking players to pull up like a paid-off jockey. It's rather coaches and clubs manipulating team selections and match-ups on the ground to get a "favourable" draft position.
-
Can we just forget about the precious draft picks for one moment and remember that the players are NOT Robots.
What is the value of a "morale boosting", "backs to the wall " interstate win in hostile territory ?
Tell me how a victory like last night can do any harm to the future of our young team ?
What a wonderful team bonding experience the flight home must of been.
I thought last night was bloody fantastic.
-

I couldnt have put it any better than this. People think that I like to see us lose, that isnt the case. People have said that the win was a reflection of our capabilities especially those players that are still young players like Deledio et al. And thats right as well by I just reckon if we can get 3 picks inside 20 and a 4th pick in the early 30s ... plus a real early PSD pick, we could becomea much better side down the track, especially when 2011/2012 comes along.
