CARLTON has delisted Cameron Cloke, creating a place on its list that could be filled by discarded St Kilda backman Matt Maguire.

Cloke, 25 next month, played 10 games this year and 36 over three seasons at Princes Park.

Blues general manager of football operations Steven Icke said tough decisions had to be made to ensure the continued development of Carlton's list.

Maguire has been training with the Blues, who have three selections in Thursday week's national draft: selections 12, 43 and 59.

Meanwhile, Essendon look certain to ramp up its interest in Luke Ball regardless of whether Adam McPhee quits the Bombers.

McPhee remains on Essendon's list but coach Matthew Knights admits his club is eyeing star midfielder Ball, who has left St Kilda and nominated for the draft.

McPhee is still deciding whether to accept a two-year offer with the Bombers or look to a three-year deal elsewhere - most likely at Fremantle.

"We may jump that hurdle (Ball) if it presents itself, but at this stage our preferred option is (that) Adam remains at the football club," Knights said yesterday.

"Adam's got to make a choice about what he thinks is best for his football career also, and I'm very mindful as a coach that another opportunity would open for another player.

"We'd certainly like Adam to stay, but he's got to really want to be at the club and with where we're going."

Knights said the Bombers had not yet spoken to Ball, whose preferred destination, Collingwood, has its first draft selection at number 30.

Essendon could trump the Magpies with either pick 24 or 26, though several clubs with higher second-round or late first-round picks could scuttle that option.

At St Kilda, Leigh Fisher and rookie Brad Howard were also delisted, while Irishman Tommy Walsh joins the Saints as an international rookie.

PASS!  :yep

Cloke is a dud footballer who would only get in the way of our cubs' development.
