NAB AFL Under-18 Championships Live Chat (06/28/2010)

http://www.afl.com.au/under-18s-live-chat/tabid/16300/default.aspx

4:47  Hi all, sorry for the slight delay. Welcome to our live chat with AFL Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan.

Monday June 28, 2010 4:47
4:48  Any injuries that might keep players out of Round 5 this weekend?

Monday June 28, 2010 4:48
4:49  Mitch Wallis fit to play. Joel Wilkinson unfortunately will be out for Queensland having hurt his shoulder. Ben Brown will be missing for Tassie - did his knee and will miss.

Hey Shifter, how is the crop of tall forwards this year?

Monday June 28, 2010 4:49 Scott Blackman
4:51  Thanks Scott. A few promising tall forwards this year - one to really catch the eye at the weekend was Tom Lynch from Vic Country and another was Zach Fitzgerald from SA. Both had great games in Round 4. Sam Day's already shown special talents as well.

Hi Kevin, Keen to get your thoughts on Corey Cassidy and also a guy named Hal Hunter

Monday June 28, 2010 4:52 James McCarthy
4:52  Corey's been playing some good footy with Oakleigh Chargers and Wesley College - good size at 189cms and showing potential through midfield.

Monday June 28, 2010 4:52
4:53  [Comment From aflfootyfanaflfootyfan: ]
hi shifter, can you give me your thoughts on the tasmanian kids - how many do u think they will have drafted and who are some of the guys to look out for?

Monday June 28, 2010 4:53 aflfootyfan
4:54  Best chance for the Tassie kids will be Josh Green. Sam Darley maybe for GWS selection. Lots of others including ruckman Andrew Phillips and Ben Brown and Joseph Groenweigen will be looked at by recruiters.

Monday June 28, 2010 4:54
4:54  [Comment From Mick WiseMick Wise: ]
hey kev billy longer for vic metro what are his prospects

Monday June 28, 2010 4:54 Mick Wise
4:55  Billy's had a great championships in the ruck and looks to have the athletic ability to be drafted but won't be eligible until 2011.

Monday June 28, 2010 4:55
4:55  [Comment From Alex RidleyAlex Ridley: ]
thoughts on west australian reece conca?

4:55  Reece Conca has been really impressive in many different roles - midfield and back. Strong overhead for his size and is very composed. Good afl potential.

Monday June 28, 2010 4:55
4:57  [Comment From Brandon DummettBrandon Dummett: ]
hey Kevin if you were an Essendon recruiter what type of player they should look at and who?

Monday June 28, 2010 4:57 Brandon Dummett
4:57  Clubs mainly pick the next best talent rather than picking players by position so the Bombers will be like most and select the best player they can get their hands on. If it's pace in the midfield they want - Shaun Atley from Vic Country would be hard to go past.

Monday June 28, 2010 4:57
4:58  [Comment From rgs011rgs011: ]
Hey Kev, can you foresee any potential Barlow's popping up this draft?

Monday June 28, 2010 4:58 rgs011
4:59  Michael Barlow types are hard to find. Chris Irving from Sandringham has caught the eye in the VFL recently - played a blinder this weekend just past against Geelong.

Monday June 28, 2010 4:59
4:59  [Comment From Alex RidleyAlex Ridley: ]
which draftee prospect do you think will adapt quickest at AFL level?

Monday June 28, 2010 4:59 Alex Ridley
5:00  Thanks Alex. Andrew Gaff has his game together and all the 1%s - looks capable of making the step up to AFL straight away.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:00
5:00  [Comment From Scott BlackmanScott Blackman: ]
Everyone's fear this year is the amount of picks GC get. Is there depth this year to pick up quality players in the second and third round?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:00 Scott Blackman
5:01  Great question Scott. History tells us that nearly 20% of the players from the 2nd and 3rd round end up playing over 200 games so there are always some gems to be found late in draft.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:01
5:01  [Comment From Andrew FisherAndrew Fisher: ]
Hi Kev any thoughts on Steven May from the Territory

Monday June 28, 2010 5:01 Andrew Fisher
5:02  Steven's matured greatly as a player this year. He's performed well up forward and down back against Vic Metro last Friday. Will be on the GC radar.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:02
5:02  [Comment From Michael HonanMichael Honan: ]
Hi Shifter, Corey Buchan scored 7 goals in each of his first 2 games. Do you think he could go top 25 this year?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:02 Michael Honan
5:03  Thanks Michael. Clubs will certainly focus on him once the U18s are over. He kicked around 28 goals in 5 games so there's clearly potential.

Is the provision to allow a few 19 year olds to play TAC Cup work? (drafting etc)

Monday June 28, 2010 5:03 rgs011
5:04  Yes some 19 yos can play a handful of TAC Cup games which is also an option with the Under 18 Championships

Monday June 28, 2010 5:04
5:04  [Comment From Russell AyresRussell Ayres: ]
how do you rate jaime solly?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:04 Russell Ayres
5:05  Thanks Russell. He's average 3.5 goals/match in the champs including 6 against the NT so he'll be one the AFL clubs will look at.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:05
5:05  [Comment From Andrew AxiakAndrew Axiak: ]
hi like to know how will langford and trent stubbs are going with their footy?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:05 Andrew Axiak
5:06  Langford's been ill and stubbs has a broken ankle from a car accident. The 2 of them have scholarships with Hawthorn so the Hawks will be keen to see them back on the track.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:06

Shifter, what's your thoughts on Josh Marchback? Whereabouts do you think he'll go in the draft?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:06 mightytiges
5:07  Josh is a convert from basketball. Has shown he's up to the mark representing the N Knights and Vic Metro. Has played 3 of 4 matches and looks useful.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:07
5:07  [Comment From Michael HonanMichael Honan: ]
Hi Shifter, what do you think of South Australian Sebastian Tape?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:07 Michael Honan
5:08  Tape played really well on Joack Darling early and is captaining SA really well. Obvious AFL qualities. Size composure and leadership and all things that Sebastian has.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:08
5:08  [Comment From Nathan MooreNathan Moore: ]
Hey shifter, do you think Jed Lamb can make an immediate impact at the AFL next year even with his slight frame?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:08 Nathan Moore
5:09  Thanks Nathan. Jed looks a certain draftee and with his ability around goals should be useful but it's hard to know how he'll adapt to the professional environment which is the AFL.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:09
5:09  [Comment From rgs011rgs011: ]
Paper today says Jack Newnes is catching recruiters eyes, how do you rate him?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:09 rgs011
5:11  Jack's been in great form while the Nationals have been on. A driving force behind the Knights being on top of the ladder. Look forward to seeing his progress as the champs conclude.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:11
5:11  [Comment From Michael HonanMichael Honan: ]
Hi Shifter, whereabouts in the draft do you think Daniel Gorringe will go?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:11 Michael Honan
5:12  Thanks Michael. Scott Lycette and Daniel are arguably the 2 highest ranked ruckmen in the champs. It will depend on how badly clubs in the first round need ruckmen.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:12
5:12  [Comment From Russell AyresRussell Ayres: ]
Any Jack Grimes like players to look out for?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:12 Russell Ayres
5:13  Brodie Smith from SA - Woodville WT has developed really well this year. Can play acorss half back or through the midfield. Great acceleration and ball-winning ability have been features of his play.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:13
5:13  [Comment From Nathan MooreNathan Moore: ]
Shifter, do you think Tomas Bugg will attract some interest from GWS?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:13 Nathan Moore
5:14  Certainly Bugg from Gippsland Power will be looked at. Doesn't fumble, has great courage and has played well for Vic Country at U16s and U18s.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:14
5:14  [Comment From Todd BroadbentTodd Broadbent: ]
What do you think of Lucas Cook and will he be a good key forward in the future?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:14 Todd Broadbent
5:14  Cook's one of the most improved in the TAC Cup as a marking forward and goalkicker. His five 5 goals on the MCG against Vic Metro showcased his talent.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:14
5:15  [Comment From rgs011rgs011: ]
Shifter, if Darcy Barden gets drafted it will be a great story, already working the tools during the day, he'll probably appreciate the AFL lifestyle that little bit more. What are his chances?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:15 rgs011
5:16  Darcy's been very consistent as a marking target for Vic Metro. Works really hard and kicked a bag against Tassie. That was a top performance that made people sit up and take notice.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:16
5:16  [Comment From Michael HonanMichael Honan: ]
Hi Shifter, at the start of last year I thought Joseph Groenewegen could go top 25, he missed being drafted, where do you think he's at now?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:16 Michael Honan
5:17  Joseph's still on the improve. Good signs in these championships. At 198cms he's got plenty of height and we think there's more to come.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:17
5:17  [Comment From Russell AyresRussell Ayres: ]
What are Ben Eddy's chances of being drafted

Monday June 28, 2010 5:17 Russell Ayres
5:18  Thanks Russell. Ben's got great goalkicking ability - we'll be watching his progress with Gippsland Power with interest.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:18
5:18  [Comment From James McCarthyJames McCarthy: ]
what sort of players do u think the saints would be looking at, irving would certainly be one they should look at very closely

Monday June 28, 2010 5:18 James McCarthy
5:19  Because of the alignment with Sandy, Saints have the advantage of seeing Irving at close quarters but he'll be in the draft pool like everyone else so there's no guarantee he'll play for them.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:19
5:19  [Comment From Michael HonanMichael Honan: ]
Hi Shifter, after puncturing his lung early last year, Viv Michie didn't play for most of last year. Where do you think he's at?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:19 Michael Honan
5:20  Viv's been fantastic for Vic Metro this year. He's certainly on my draft board. Super smart around the goals and clever through the midfield.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:20
5:20  [Comment From Todd BroadbentTodd Broadbent: ]
What players do you think Melbourne will go for?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:20 Todd Broadbent
5:22  Thanks Todd. Still to unfold when Melbourne's first choice will be but if they're looking for class through the midfield or around goal Jayden Pitt from Gellong Country /Vic Country has been really impressive and might be available.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:22
5:22  [Comment From Michael HonanMichael Honan: ]
Hi Shifter, haven't heard much about him, but where do you think Jamie Cripps is at?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:22 Michael Honan
5:23  Jamie's a medium defender for WA - has been consistent at U16 and U18 level for his state. Regarded very highly by his coaching staff and looks a likely prospect.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:23
5:23  [Comment From Tommy KrajinaTommy Krajina: ]
Shaun Atley, whats he like?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:23 Tommy Krajina
5:24  Shaun's an exceptional talent. Really looking forward to catching his game on Wednesday in Geelong - one to look out for.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:24
5:24  [Comment From Scott BlackmanScott Blackman: ]
Hey Shifter, after your opinion on Carlton Scholarship players Blake Bray and Jake Pianta..?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:24 Scott Blackman
5:25  Blake Bray has shown great marking ability up forward playing for NSW ACT. His finishing need to improve but the attributes are there.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:25
5:25  [Comment From Michael HonanMichael Honan: ]
Hi Shifter, at one point I was thinking Luke Parker could be the number 1 pick but now he has fallen a long way. Where do you think he's at at the moment?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:25 Michael Honan
5:26  Thanks Michael/ Luke's been consistent for Vic Country this year. He's a terrific worker and very strong overhead. Good team orientation to his play and clubs will decide where he goes in the draft.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:26
5:26  [Comment From Tai BuiTai Bui: ]
Hey shifter what are your opinion on mitch wallis and thomas liberatore?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:26 Tai Bui
5:27  Mitch and Tom have both had impressive champs as midfielders. Look certain make the grade at AFL level. Not much between them. Both eligible for father son for the Bulldogs.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:27
5:27  [Comment From Russell AyresRussell Ayres: ]
Who is the best stoppage player at the champs?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:27 Russell Ayres
5:28  Thanks Russell. Been some great stoppage players. Josh Caddy from Vic Metro excels in this area although he missed the first couple of games. Just like his dad, Tom Liberatore's in that bracket too.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:28
5:28  [Comment From Todd BroadbentTodd Broadbent: ]
Will the Under 18's still be on Fox Sports on Wednesday?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:28 Todd Broadbent

Where do you think the third Riewoldt, Charlie is at?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:29 Michael Honan
5:30  Matthew Armstrong (his coach) says he's still got some areas to develop but it's great to see him back playing some solid footy after his knee injury.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:30
5:30  [Comment From Michael HonanMichael Honan: ]
Hi Shifter, about where do you think Jayden Pitt will go in the draft?

Monday June 28, 2010 5:30 Michael Honan
5:31  Jayden's been one of the suprise packets in these champs. Smart around goal, beautifully composed and has really pushed his name to the fore over the last month.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:31
5:31  [Comment From Russell AyresRussell Ayres: ]
who will be the top draft pick in your opinion (Swallow??)

Monday June 28, 2010 5:31 Russell Ayres
5:32  Swallow will be one of GC's top three. The club has guaranteed that but haven't said what number he'll be. We'll have to wait til draft day to find out.

Monday June 28, 2010 5:32
5:33  We'll have to wrap it up here folks but thanks for all the excellent questions. Remember to watch the Under 18s on Fox Sports on this Wednesday from 12.30 AEST, on SEN 1116 or on the AFL website.
