Foxtel wins in AFL carve-up
Caroline Wilson

February 6, 2007

VICTORIAN football fans will see a reduction in free-to-air television coverage from this season, with pay TV network Foxtel emerging as the unofficial winner of the battle to carve up the AFL television fixture.

After 12 months of often bitter negotiations with Channels Seven and Ten, Foxtel is expected to announce this week that it has secured half the competition's home-and-away games over the next five years.

In a deal brokered in the final stages by AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou last Friday, and to be signed in the next 48 hours, Foxtel will pay Seven and Ten $50 million this season and an indexed amount each year until 2011 for a significantly increased number of exclusive games and new regular timeslots.

Channels Seven and Ten finally relented to the pay TV provider following an undertaking by Foxtel to provide an annual $10 million of advertising and marketing, easing the load on the free-to-air networks.

Seven's first choice commentary team of Bruce McAvaney and Dennis Cometti will now call both the Friday night and 2pm Sunday fixtures, with Tim Watson and David Schwartz doing special comments.

Without the Foxtel deal, Seven would have been forced to televise four AFL games a week - providing a bonus for fans, but a headache for the network, which would have faced serious clashes with its new V8 Supercars contract and a potential lengthy court battle with the AFL over its attempt to televise Friday night games into Sydney and Brisbane on community Channel 31.

Seven and Ten were also reluctant to telecast rival games in direct competition with each other on Saturday nights - a prospect also eliminated by the Foxtel deal after the AFL had refused their joint push to relax the Saturday night fixture.

The AFL's broadcasting sub-committee was due to meet yesterday over the Channel 31 issue, a problem which is now certainly redundant.

Foxtel will televise its matches on the Fox Sports Three channel and on Austar in some regional areas of Australia.

In a major coup for the pay TV network, it will get to alternate with Channel Ten in having first pick of the two weekly Saturday afternoon games, and will also gain significant momentum in its push into South Australia and Western Australia.

Foxtel will televise live and exclusive twilight games every Sunday during the season and has also gained an unprecedented four live fixtures into Adelaide and Perth respectively involving local teams. In the past those games had to be shown free-to-air.

Foxtel has also achieved a deal for an annual outlay of $10 million less each year than Seven and Ten had previously insisted on.

With the AFL fixture to be announced just 15 days before the opening of the NAB pre-season competition, Foxtel will also gain access to an exclusive pre-season semi-final.

The biggest change for Victorian fans will be a reduction in the number of free-to-air games each week from five to four, with the early Sunday afternoon game - previously telecast by Channel Nine - now going exclusively to Foxtel. The pay TV operator will also televise Sunday twilight games.

But the AFL has refused Foxtel's demand for a guaranteed fixture on each weekend of the June split round, along with the network's bid to rid its matches of ground signs involving competitors such as Optus.

With Ten and Foxtel splitting the Saturday afternoon games and alternating each round with the first choice of the two, Channel Ten will then show the best Saturday night fixture with Foxtel televising the other Saturday night game.

Seven's AFL boss Ian Johnson said his network would now work to produce a weeknight football program and he would not rule out scheduling it on Thursday night against Nine's The Footy Show.

With Clinton Grybas, the former face of the Fox Footy Channel, now expected to return to that network and former Nine commentators such as Brian Taylor and Dwayne Russell in the mix but not yet guaranteed positions, Johnson denied the delay in securing a deal had hurt the job prospects of football commentators and production staff.

"I have told every AFL talent manager that I don't want to stand in the way of anyone doing a deal with a rival network," he said.

Foxtel secures key AFL matches
February 07, 2007 01:18am
Article from: AAP

FOXTEL is set show key games this coming AFL season under an agreement reached with free-to-air rights holders the Seven and Ten networks.

The Australian newspaper reports the agreement will see Seven broadcast Friday night games in all states except NSW, ACT and Queensland - where Foxtel will carry the game live.

The pay-tv operator will also show Saturday day and night games, along with Network Ten.

Sunday day games will be split between Seven and Foxtel - with the latter also showing the twilight game.

However, AFL fans in Adelaide and Perth may be forced to subscribe to the pay-television service, with Foxtel also given first rights to four games involving teams in the two cities.

The details of the agreement were set to be released today.

Don't know how Caro can think Foxtel is the winner here but oh well thems the breaks I suppose. They are paying more to their mortal enemies than they wanted too ::)

I have to say this doesn't sit well with me Andy D getting involved in things that he shouldn't.

At the end of the day all I know is that people without PayTV are worse off than they have been for the last 5 years and IIRC Andy D promised that under this new agrrement no one would be worse off - he actually boasted that people would be better off.

Well by my calculation if you had 5 games before on FTA Tv and you now are going only to have 4 then you are clearly WORSE off :banghead

When it is all said and done the AFL when this all first started back in 2005 no less, had an offer from Chs 7 & 10 for 5 games on FTA and 3 on Pay TV at around $700 million.

They (AFL) knocked that back and again took more $$$$ from Ch 9 & Foxtel which only ever promised a 4/4 split. People were going to be worse off

Chs 7 & 10 matched that offer and the 4/4 split remains. So unless you can afford about $600 a year minimum for Pay TV on a 2 year contract then you worse off.

Well done Andy D - you should be very pleased with yourself - FOOL :banghead :banghead

The one concern I have from a RFC viewpoint is with us being the twilight guinea-pigs this year with 4 games and Foxtel winning the rights to show them. Limits our FTA exposure.

Foxtel Deal delayed again
« Reply #5 on: February 08, 2007, 12:33:20 PM »
There's still a difference over one clause in the contract. SEN say the speculation says Foxtel are the aggrieved party. The deal will still go ahead but the final contract won't go through until tomorrow at the earliest and possibly some time next week.

Foxtel Deal back on again today lol
« Reply #7 on: February 08, 2007, 02:12:53 PM »
After some last minute talks the deal will go through today. It was meant to happen at 11am but after the off again, on again games today,  it's now scheduled for 2.30pm. The media are at the function now where there's a table and 4 chairs - one for Andy D and the remainder for representatives from Seven, Ten and Foxtel.

Foxtel to pay $63m per year according to SEN
« Reply #9 on: February 08, 2007, 03:13:48 PM »
SEN claims:

* Foxtel to pay $315 million ($63m per year  :o)

* Better coverage in regional NSW/QLD (presumably live broadcast on Foxtel)

* Ch 10 to show games live into QLD on Saturday night. Swans games live into NSW.

* 3 games shown on Sunday (one delayed).

They're still waiting for the press conference :sleep. The AFL site put up an article about the deal then had to pull it  :wallywink.

Edit: announcement expected in 30 minutes.

I think they mean 3 games overall including Ch 7's.

Well I just read on BF that there was an announcement on the AFL site around 2.30 but it's been yanked  :rollin

this is the AFL website link that you cannot find on the AFL site:

http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=314097

And this is the BF lik that tells you it's been yanked:

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=285486&page=105

In the AFL article it explained that Ch 7 would show a Sunday game live at 3.00pm  :o and that if the 1.00pm game is played in Launceston, Canberra or the Gold Coast etc then Ch 7 would replay it later Sunday evening

More games, more viewers

Foxtel will pay existing free-to-air TV rights holders the Seven and Ten networks $315.5 million for the next five years for a sub-license that gives it the right to show four live games each weekend, including for the first time, matches involving the South Australian and Western Australian teams into their home markets.

The dreaded 'black spots' are also a thing of the past, with fans in New South Wales and Queensland to receive far better coverage. Friday night matches will be shown live on Foxtel and in prime-time on free-to-air TV in key developing markets such as the ACT, Wagga, Far South Coast and Northern Rivers in New South Wales and the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Cairns in Queensland.

On Saturday night, Network Ten will broadcast a match in prime-time each week across all of Queensland, while in New South Wales, Network Ten will broadcast all Swans matches live or near live.

Victorian fans can also now watch three live matches every Sunday for the first time, while local teams will be broadcast on free-to-air TV on Seven and Ten every week of the season in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

Seven and Ten will each show two matches each weekend. Seven will have a Friday night and a Sunday afternoon match, while Ten will again have a Saturday double header. Foxtel will show one match on a Saturday afternoon, another on a Saturday night, one at 1pm on a Sunday and will have exclusive national rights to the new weekly Sunday twilight match.

Foxtel won't revive the Fox Footy Channel for its match coverage, and will instead screen most of its AFL coverage on its Fox Sports channels. Friday night football in northern Australia will run on the Main Event channel.

The arrangement also includes the NAB Cup, which starts later this month.

Key points of the deal:

Victoria, Tasmania & NT: All three Sunday games televised in full and live or near live on Sunday afternoons. Sunday 1pm matches in Canberra, Launceston or the Gold Coast to be replayed at about 10.30pm that night on the Seven network.

South Australia: All 44 matches involving Port Adelaide and Adelaide broadcast on free-to-air TV. All away matches live or near-live on free-to-air TV. Home matches near-live except for four matches per year (not Showdowns), which will be shown on a three-hour delay (but live on Foxtel).. If a South Australian team is scheduled for a live Foxtel match on a Saturday, Network Ten will also show it live or near-live instead of the other match in that timeslot. If a South Australian team scheduled for a live Foxtel match on a Sunday, Channel Seven will also will also show it live, or near-live in addition to one other Sunday game, which means five matches on free-to-air TV on some Sundays.

Western Australia: All 44 matches involving West Coast and Fremantle broadcast on free-to-air TV. All away matches live or near-live on free-to-air TV. Home matches near-live on free-to-air TV except for four matches per year (not Derbies), which will be shown on a three-hour delay (but live on Foxtel). If a West Australian team is scheduled for a live Foxtel match on a Saturday, Network Ten will also show it live or near-live instead of the other match in that timeslot. If a West Australian team scheduled for a live Foxtel match in the Sunday 1pm timeslot, Channel Seven will also will also show it live, or near-live in addition to one other Sunday game, which means five matches on free-to-air TV on some Sundays.

New South Wales & ACT: Between two and four matches live or near-live on Seven and Ten per week and five or six matches per week live on Foxtel. All Swans games will be shown live, or near-live on free-to-air TV. Friday night matches will be live across the state on Foxtel, on a one-hour delay on Seven in the ACT, Wagga and the Far South Coast, a two hour delay to the Northern Rivers market, and from 11.30pm in Sydney and other parts of New South Wales. Saturday night matches involving the Swans will be shown no later that 7.30pm across all of NSW and the ACT.

Queensland: Three or four matches per week live or near-live on Seven and Ten and five matches per week live on Foxtel. All 22 Lions matches and all matches on the Gold Coast will be shown live or near-live on free-to-air TV. Friday night matches will be live across the state on Foxtel, on a one-hour delay on Seven on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Cairns, from 11.30pm in Brisbane and other parts of Queensland. Saturday night matches will be live or near-live on Ten across the entire state.
