AFL looks to settle score using video technology

THE AFL will consider using video technology in controversial scoring decisions next year after a weekend of incidents.

AFL umpires' boss Jeff Gieschen confirmed yesterday that goal umpire David Dixon would not officiate again this year after incorrectly ruling Matt Campbell's snap at goal was a point for North Melbourne against Sydney at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

But Gieschen gave the tick of approval to a decision giving Kangaroo Brent Harvey a soccered goal on the line.

Gieschen also said a decision that Paul Medhurst's checkside snap was a point for Collingwood against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday was correct.

Gieschen said the AFL would continue to debate the merits of using video technology.

"Every summer we review all these things and if there are enough people that believe (video technology) is beneficial, it will be discussed," he said.

"I think with the clear and obvious ones when we have made an error, maybe there is some benefit.

"At the moment we have measures in place, such as the consultation process, and we saw it in operation a couple of times at the weekend.

"But those really difficult ones that happen really quickly, if they come up on replays that it is a clear error, maybe there is some benefit."

If the technology is there use the thing. Or why have it there.Or is it there so the commentators can go ape poo at the umpirers. Just because they can see it. And I think they should have a camera on top of the goal post this would work better.

Video would be useless anyway as the goal-line is no longer the actual goal-line because Andy D, AA and Geisch say the back of the padding on the posts behind the goal-line is the goal-line and the goal ump just has to guess where that goal-line is ???.
