In the VFL, teams are allowed to have 1 TAC cup player in their team.  Jakobi was Coburg's player.

Hardwick on Jakobi

“Ben is a beautiful kick of the footy.  He missed about two years of TAC Cup football with Sandringham Dragons due to a foot injury.  We’d known about Ben through Francis Jackson (a teacher at Brighton Grammar when Jakobi was a student there).  He can play - there’s no doubt about it.  We see him playing some half-back, some wing . . . We hid him away at Coburg for a little while last season.  His development was okay, but we feel when we get him in our system, he rises to the challenge, and he looks at home at AFL level.  Ben makes really good decisions with the ball, he’s a good height, and he’s been in our system now for a year, so he knows how we play.  He’s just a guy that we believe, at some stage, will push for AFL selection.”

Sounds like this was really a case of "we got our man".

Really un-Richmond like in the way we approached it though.  Thinking, planning, purpose, method, future, reason.  Nah, we must have just lucked onto him.   ::)

Wasn't he training at Melbourne last week? According to last week permission to train list he was.

He was on our permission to train list on Nov 9th and again on Nov 23rd.  He appeared on Melbourne's on Nov 30th and back on ours on Dec 6th.  Methinks the AFL stuffed the Nov 30th one up.

I think Melbourne were interested, so he probably would have trained with them so they could check him out.
