Tigers to take safe path with Cotchin
Greg Denham | January 26, 2009 | The Australian

YOUNG Richmond midfielder Trent Cotchin is facing a race against time to be fit for the start of the 2009 premiership season.

Cotchin, 18, is yet to resume full training because of achilles tendon and calf problems and has already been ruled out of early NAB Cup participation, which begins for the Tigers on February 15 against Fremantle in Perth.

Richmond football manager Ross Monaghan, who crossed from Melbourne in the off-season, said the Tigers could not be specific when Cotchin's soreness would subside and allow him to train without being restricted.

"It's hard to say when he'll be right, his body hasn't fully developed and we've been juggling his training program," Monaghan said. "We don't think there's any long-term detrimental effect, and hopefully he'll be right for the first round of the season proper in March. We've backed off his training and adjusting his program to best suit his body."

Monaghan said Cotchin's latest injury concerns were on the opposite leg to last year, when an achilles problem prevented the overall No2 national draft selection from making his debut until round eight.

So impressive were his first 15 games last season, averaging almost 17 disposals, the teenager finished third to Rhys Palmer and Cyril Rioli in the Ron Evans Medal, the AFL's rising star award.

The Tigers won 11 games in 2008, but finished strongly by winning nine of 15 when Cotchin played.

"He goes a few steps forward and then one back," Monaghan said of Cotchin's 2009 preparation. "It's irritating for him, especially with the expectation based on last year is that he'd be a superstar.

"It's hard to say when he'll be able to hit the track and train flat out."

Two "new" faces ready to resurrect their careers are Mark Coughlan and Andrew Raines, who are both likely to play against the Dockers next month.

Coughlan, who has been plagued by multiple knee reconstructions and hamstring problems, has not appeared for the Tigers since the middle of 2006.

After 46 straight games, Raines' season was halted early last year, first by a dislocated kneecap in round two followed by several other soft-tissue problems.

Kayne Pettifer is hoping to push for senior selection in the second half of the year after a knee reconstruction last season. Graham Polak, who was in critical condition last year after being hit by a tram, is in full training but the Tigers are yet to establish a time for his return.

Ben Cousins has been ruled out for the first official pre-season match, but could face his former club West Coast in the second round of the NAB Cup if results fall that way.

First bad injury we have had over the preseason and unfortunately it was self inflicted and had nothing to do with the official training itself. The fact that he was pushing himself so hard before the preseason had even begun was seen as a huge positive to everyone, including us here, but his body was obviously not ready for such gruelling punishment at his stage of development.

Disappointing for the fans, club but most of all for the young fellow given his determination to succeed.

Hope he can return before too far into the season and make a smiliar (if not even better  :pray) impact as he did in 2008.

One thing it does do is open the door more for players like Cogs and Raines in an otherwise extremely competitive midfield.

Very dissaponting news indeed, no point rushing him in though and perhaps should be aiming for rounds 4 - 8 again...

Yeah not good, really wanted him to show the comp and Carltank that he was the no.1 pick, also might have taken a bit of the Buddy pick heat off us. Still time for that though and I just hope he comes good soon.

No point risking Cotch just to rush him back. He is only young and there's potentially a 10-12 year career ahead of him. Use kid gloves and just make sure he is right when he does finally return to full training and playing. Unfortunately he's learnt a lesson about training too hard the hard way.

Agree. The article says he isn't fully developed yet so still growing. Pay to take the softly softly approach now and reap the benefits later. Its not like we dont have any other options right now = as opposed to how we ahd to rush Tambling in as we didn't have any other option.

Saw this on BF and heard it on SEN as well. It has to be garbage surely.

According to a rumour on SEN a listener claims he has it on good authority Cotch has a serious knee injury and will be out for 6 months.

Actually it is quite funny what people will write and what SEN will put to air

Tiger Cotchin likely to miss NAB Cup opener

RICHMOND midfielder Trent Cotchin's left Achilles injury is likely to keep him out of the first round of the NAB Cup, but he could be available after that as he prepares to play his first full season in the AFL.

A broken right foot and Achilles caused the 18-year-old to miss all of his first pre-season 12 months ago, but he debuted later in the year and finished third in the 2008 NAB AFL Rising Star on the back of just 15 games.

Richmond's football manager Ross Monaghan said on Tuesday afternoon: "Trent is dealing with an Achilles tendon issue.

"He is expected to make a full recovery but is not expected be available for round one of the NAB Cup."

Matt Hornsby, Richmond's elite performance manager, said Cotchin was progressing nicely, and that the injury was not something that would dog him for the rest of his career.

"He's actually going quite well; he's had some issues with his Achilles which he had when he was drafted to us, and obviously he had the broken bone as well," Hornsby told richmondfc.com.au.

"It's just part of his young body still developing, and he'll grow out of it.

"He's an 18-year-old, and we have such high expectations on young players these days – he's only six weeks older than (eighth pick in the 2008 draft) Tyrone Vickery."

Now that puts things in perspective!  :o He really is just a baby isn't he!

If he can get out on the field this year fully healed and fit then I will be happy. I don't think we have has much of a need to shore up our midfield this year, given our new recruits and returning experienced players, than we did last year.

Today's Age has the same report.....

Richmond midfielder and 2008 Rising Star nominee Trent Cotchin has also been forced off the training track with Achilles soreness.

Cotchin was sidelined until round eight last year with Achilles problems and now has "an Achilles tendon issue" on his opposite foot, according to football operations manager Ross Monaghan.

"He is expected to make a full recovery, but is not expected to be available for round one of the NAB Cup," Monaghan said.

The Tigers' elite performance manager, Matt Hornsby, said the highly rated 18-year-old would overcome recent injury concerns as his body developed.

"He had some issues with his Achilles when he was drafted (with pick No. 2 in 2007) and the broken bone (in his foot) as well," Hornsby said.

"It's just part of his young body still developing and he'll grow out of it."

SEN still going with the knee injury rumour.

Doran got another text saying it's 4-6 month knee injury.

I heard that too. The anonymous texter said Richmond aren't telling the truth. It's Cotch's knee not his achillies which is the problem. Mark Doran then goes on there must be something more to this than Richmond are saying ::)

Denham on SEN

Richmond don't know exactly when he'll be right. He's only 18 so they'll nurse him through it.
