IF DION Prestia decides to leave Gold Coast, it is becoming increasingly clear he will join a Melbourne-based club that can offer him on-field success in the short-term and for the long-term.

Prestia, 23, comes out of contract at the end of this season and has attracted a wealth of interest from clubs throughout the country, but will only leave Metricon Stadium to return to his home state of Victoria.

Prestia won't turn his mind fully to his football future until the Suns' round 13 bye, when he is due to sit down with his manager, Marty Pask, to assess his options.

Martin's move paying dividends for Suns

However, the clubs with a realistic chance of luring Prestia are starting to emerge.

Rival clubs believe Richmond is well in the running, while Melbourne was strongly linked with the former Calder Cannon during last year's trade period.

And some Victorian teams that inquired about Prestia recently were told by Pask it was unlikely his client would consider them as possible new homes.

After six mostly success-starved seasons at Gold Coast, it's believed Prestia would not leave the Suns to join a team that is a few years away from contending.

This would appear to rule out Carlton and possibly St Kilda.

It's also likely Prestia would target a new home that could offer him sustained on-field success.

As such, he would probably be wary of joining any team he perceived to be near the end of its premiership window. North Melbourne is widely thought to be in this position, while even Hawthorn seems to be finally feeling the effects of Father Time.

Although most opposition clubs expect Prestia will leave Gold Coast, the Suns remain hopeful of re-signing the midfielder. They remain in on-going discussions with Pask and are comfortable with how those talks are progressing.

The Suns' position is also strengthened by the fact Prestia is not a free agent, meaning he can only depart Gold Coast via a trade or the draft.

Prestia was pick No.9 in Gold Coast's inaugural 2010 draft and industry sources believe the Suns would demand at least a pick around that mark should he request a trade.

The Assumption College product finished second to Gary Ablett in Gold Coast's 2013 best and fairest award and was third the following year.

A left knee injury ended Prestia's 2015 season after round eight and disrupted his 2016 pre-season.

The 23-year-old returned in time for the Suns' round one win over Essendon and has missed just one game since.

Amid Gold Coast's injury-ravaged start to the season, Prestia has stood up, averaging 24.9 possessions a game (third at the club behind Aaron Hall and Ablett).

He is also ranked second at the Suns this year for contested possessions and third for clearances, inside 50s and tackles.

Prestia is not the only out-of-contract Gold Coast player toying with a move at the end of the season.

Fellow midfielder Jaeger O'Meara is also considering a shift to Victoria, with the West Australian most strongly linked to Hawthorn and St Kilda.

O'Meara, 2013's NAB AFL Rising Star, has not played since rupturing a patella tendon in a NEAFL practice match at the start of last year, but the question marks over his ability to return to peak fitness and form have only marginally diminished the interest of rival clubs.

Ruckman Tom Nicholls and swingman Sam Day are also out of contract, with the former linked to the Western Bulldogs.

Would definitely do for a pick around 9

Trade Talk: O’Meara, Prestia & Tigers
Joshua Papanikolaou | 26 May 2016, 04:58PM

Gold Coast midfield pair Jaeger O’Meara and Dion Prestia will not be at the Suns next season given the club’s predicament and their delaying of contract negotiations, says Brett Anderson.

The talk surrounding O’Meara, who is currently still on his way back to senior football after a serious knee injury, has been growing and his football future seems to be in Victoria.

“I think they both go, personally, and that’s been a longstanding viewpoint for the last 12 to 18 months especially on Jaeger,” said Anderson on SEN radio.

“A little bit less with Dion but there was a press conference with him where, not trying to be a body language expert, but it didn’t bode well from what I looked at.

“Some of the comments about delaying contract talks, we know what that typically means.”

The SEN draft analyst noted that although Hawthorn has long been considered front-runners for O’Meara there are other clubs in with a good chance of luring the hot prospect.

“St Kilda, Hawthorn and Richmond are the three that I’ve heard for a long, long time,” said Anderson.

“I wouldn’t rule out St Kilda.

“The knee, you hear different reports, I’ve heard reports that it’s not great but you hear other things that it’s okay.

“Ultimately, if a club is looking to recruit Jaeger O’Meara it’s ‘we should get a discount based on his knee’ – well if you’re looking to recruit him you’ve basically already cleared the fact that his knee is okay, there’s no discounts that he might have a sore knee.”

Another highly rated midfielder likely to be at another club in 2017 is GWS Giants youngster Jack Steele who is a long way down the list of options available to coach Leon Cameron.

“I think Jack Steele plays at another footy club next year,” added Anderson.

“Now, I know Richmond really liked him in his draft year – really, really liked him – and he would fit them perfectly in terms of someone who could come in and play.

“He’s not one of those cast-offs that’s not playing, this is a genuine top quality kid who is just unfortunately stuck behind a pretty handy midfield.”

Barrett on the Footy Show tonight saying Richmond are after Adelaide's Josh Jenkins.

The Crows are offering Jenkins 550k p.a. for 4 years to retain him. So any offer to get Jenkins to move is going to have to be north of that.

Is Jenkins a free agent or would we have to trade?

Would take Prestia and these two blokes as well. And if we're into Jenkins that suits me fine. Heck we'd have a good backline with Day alongside Rance and the forward line AND ruck would be much better with Jenkins. Add Prestia and I honestly think we'd only need another mid or two to be very competitive.

Trades like this should be a big priority. Grab all three players even if it costs us two first round picks. We could probably get a second round back with them maybe.

I'm clearly a big fan of Jenkins but that's surely about the limit of what you could pay a player like him.

For that sort of coin I'd rather have a shot at Tomlinson from GWS.

Never know what to believe BUT if we are going to go for Jenkins and not Hurley then Blair/FJ/Dan the lot of em somehow lost whatever little amount credibility they had.

Would have to be stupid to offer Hurley the reported 900K a year, 5 year deal he wants.  Fat man has had as many bad games as he has had good.  Hes probably eating a donut as I write this.

At Richmond, he would probably turn into another Chaplin.

Time to get Jenkins was a couple years ago.  Swap him for Vickery.
