What the Tigers need to tweak for next week: Bring the intensity for Cotch

Richmond simply must play with much more intensity for Trent Cotchin’s farewell game against North Melbourne this coming weekend.

Across the last four weeks, the Tigers have conceded 68.36.(444) from 250 inside 50s. In response, they’ve kicked just 47.40.(322) from 190 inside 50s.

This Saturday they must make things difficult for North by applying increased amounts of pressure both through the midfield and inside their own forward 50 in a bid to deny the opposition easily moving the ball down the other end.

Otherwise they’ll be giving the Roos plenty of looks inside 50 from kickable areas and we can’t have that in Cotch’s final act at the MCG.

Don’t remind me of that disgraceful effort.  :help

The only worse loss was the ‘13 EF loss to the Cheats.  :banghead :banghead

But I’m over it now but your reminder has resurfaced some lingering PTSD.
The club that keeps giving.

Tigers or Roos? Richmond vs North Melbourne predictions

The Tigers and Roos clash at the ‘G on Saturday: can the Tigers send their legends out on a high?

Liam McAllion
Codebet
August 18, 2023

The Richmond Tigers’ finals hopes have faded but they are looking to bounce back against a North Melbourne team who are desperate for their first win since Round 2 at the MCG here.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT

* North Melbourne have lost their last 19 matches.
* Richmond have failed to cover the line in their last five matches.
* 10 of the last 11 matches at the MCG have gone over the total points line.

North Melbourne haven’t won since Round 2 and although they have looked strong in games, they seem to run out of gas in the last quarter, losing five games this season by nine points or less.

Richmond have lost its last three matches, meaning the Tigers finals hopes are pretty much dead in the water, but the club will be looking to send off triple premiership stars Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin out on a high, with the pair retiring after the game.

The Roos won this matchup this time last year by four points in a thriller at Marvel Stadium, but this game is at the MCG, where North haven’t won a game since 2017.

The Tigers love to use their pace off halfback and space to lead into at the MCG, scoring 90 or more points in seven of the last eight matches there and will take advantage of a weak Roos backline here.

POUNCING TIGERS

Richmond’s Shai Bolton has been a star for a number of years now, with his ability to hurt you in so many ways, whether that be with his pace to burst out of packs or his leaping ability to take a specky.

The speedy Tiger has had at least 20+ disposals and two goals in five games this season and will be licking his lips to face the Roos this week who simply don’t have a quick or agile enough backline matchup for him.

Jayden Short has been an absolute multi lock for the past few years with his ability to win the ball off half back and also build clearances in the midfield.

The versatile Tiger also loves playing against North Melbourne, averaging 24 disposals across the past four meetings. Much like Bolton, Short can use his speed and fitness to build disposals at both ends of the ground and frustrate the opposition here.

SHINBONER STRONG

Even after 278 games, Jack Ziebell continues to put his body on the line for his club, building his disposals in multiple ways In the process he’s also become a go-to multi choice for 25+ disposals across the past few years.

The former North skipper has cleared the 25+ disposal mark nine times this season, had 32 against Melbourne two weeks ago and much like the amazing final game from Ben Cunnington last week, Ziebell will want to end on a high and his teammates will be looking for him out of defence.

Luke Davies-Uniacke has put this young North side on his back and although they continue to lose, it isn’t because of his efforts in the midfield, averaging 28 disposals, 13 contested, seven clearances and has five goals across his last six matches.

LDU has become the complete midfielder for this side and this has helped his AFL Fantasy score to rocket. LDU’s averaging 113 points across the last six games and will use his bursts of speed to get through packs once again here.

THE PICK

Two of Richmond’s greatest players of all time, Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt, have declared this is their last game and the side will want to do everything they can to help the three-time premiership stars finish on a high.

North very rarely play the MCG and have looked lost in recent years there, not winning at the ‘G since 2017 and the Tigers have beaten St Kilda, Geelong, Sydney and the Bulldogs there this season, who are all top eight contenders.

Richmond vs North Melbourne Preview

Andrew Slevison
SEN
18 August 2023

It will be a day of celebration at the MCG on Saturday.

Richmond will say goodbye to three-time premiership captain Trent Cotchin and fellow flag star Jack Riewoldt who have called time on their glittering careers.

Former North Melbourne skipper Jack Ziebell will also step away from the game following his distinguished career.

There will be plenty of emotion as both Tigers and Kangaroos fans farewell greats of their respective clubs.

And now onto the footy.

The Tigers have been poor over the last fortnight, going down to the Western Bulldogs and St Kilda both at Marvel Stadium. Andrew McQualter’s side appears to have lost the zest and vigour it was playing with prior to that.

The Roos have been extremely competitive over the last month, going down to St Kilda, West Coast and Essendon by single-figure margins while pushing Melbourne most of the way having led at half-time.

They present a tricky proposition for a Richmond team down on confidence.

The Tigers have conceded 68.36.(444) from 250 inside 50s across the last four weeks. In response, they’ve kicked just 47.40.(322) from 190 inside 50s.

That would be far more problematic if they were not playing a team that has lost 19 matches in a row.

With Cotchin and Riewoldt to honour, Richmond should flex its muscle and give the Tiger Army something to celebrate as the club’s successful era well and truly comes to an end.

Alastair Clarkson’s North will be no easy task but the Tigers should be able to put their foot down late and send off the pair of club legends in style.

Tip: Richmond by 22 points.

From Barrett's 'Sliding Doors' column.

IF ...
you're a Tigers member and you're not at the MCG on Saturday ...

THEN ...
you'd want a good excuse. The farewell match for two Tigers greats, Cotch and Jack. Even with finals out of the question, surely the crowd gets beyond 60k? Maybe 70k? They deserve that number.

The certainties for Round 23: Richmond versus North Melbourne

Andrew Slevison
SEN
19 August 2023

Cotchin to have 20+ disposals and Riewoldt to kick 2+ goals

Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt will both play their final game for Richmond on Saturday.

Three-time premiership captain Cotchin has averaged 16.3 disposals in his last season. In 15 games against the Kangaroos over his career, Cotchin has averaged more than 24 touches.

We’ll go with Cotchin to pick up at least 20 disposals.

11-time leading goal kicker Riewoldt has returned 31 goals from 20 games in 2023 and has kicked multiple goals against North in four of his last five.

We’re going with Riewoldt to kick at least two goals in his final act.

Ziebell to have 20+ disposals

Another retiring star is North’s Jack Ziebell.

The former Roos skipper averages 22 disposals and has had 20 or more touches on 15 occasions in 2023.

He has found form in his last two outings, tallying 59 disposals in those two weeks.

We’re banking on Ziebell to also finish on a high with at least 20 touches in his final match for the Kangas.

Lovely tribute, sounded like it was Dusty narrating.

Managed to hold back my tears but no promises for the final siren.
