Richmond to play first Launceston game since 2013, but Dustin Martin in doubt after knee scare

Adam Holmes
The Examiner

Tasmanian Richmond fans will be keeping a keen eye on the team sheet for their preseason game at UTAS Stadium on Saturday night - the first time the club has played in Launceston since 2013.

Star Tiger Dustin Martin landed awkwardly on his knee in their first hitout last weekend and was in some doubt to play, but Hawthorn were set to field a close-to full strength side.

The ground holds fond memories for Martin, who played his first game for the Tigers in a NAB Cup match against the Hawks in 2010 at UTAS Stadium, formerly Aurora Stadium.

UTAS Stadium manager Robert Groenewegen said they were hoping for a crowd of 10,000 with over 5000 tickets already sold, but was realistic given the preseason games no longer have a competitive edge.

"We're expecting a bigger crowd than if it was any other club because Richmond are well supported," he said.

"It's great to see them here - obviously we will never have them for a roster game.

"I expect Hawthorn to play a very strong team, that's the way they've set themselves up

"Richmond played a stronger team than Melbourne in their first match in Shepparton, which means they're more unlikely to play a full strength team for this match, plus they have a Round 1 game on a Thursday."

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick played down the seriousness of Martin's injury, and he returned to the field afterwards.

Richmond's last competitive match in Launceston, against the Hawks in 2006, drew the venue's record crowd of 20,971.

They also played at the ground in 2010 and 2013 in preseason competitions, both drawing crowds above 10,000.

All club members get free general admission entry for all north, east and south terraced seating. The match starts at 7.10pm.

Cannot get our hands on the ball.  Ball use crap particularly going forward.  Butler snags one with good pressure 18-6

Hawthorn is giving Richmond a taste of its own medicine, capitalising from intercepts. All four goals have been launched from that source, but specifically the Hawks have won three intercepts inside forward 50 with all three resulting in goals.
