Don't forget to put some water out for the birds and tree rats

Don't forget your pets either. Misty may be a budgie who are desert birds but even this is too hot for him.

My girls are inside but they're soooo hot.  We have airconditioning in one room, and do you think I can get them to go in there.  No, they follow me around wherever I go.  So to get them in the room last night, I slept there, just so they'd go in there.  Was nice for me as well, but I don't like aircon generally and usually just put up with the heat.  But this is ridiculous, so it was nice and my dogs cooled down fractionally.  But hot again today and we'll go through the same process again.
I swore about an hour ago it was a few degrees cooler when the wind picked up.  But now it's died down it's back to being hot again  :banghead

Officially record high temperatures for Melbourne.

So much for a cool change too. Tomorrow is still going to be 37  :P.

Huge power outage hits Victoria; Thousands without electricity
January 30, 2009 06:53pm UPDATE 8.01pm:

A MASSIVE power outage has struck Victoria, leaving hundreds of thousands in the dark and plunging trains into chaos.

In addition to lines closed earlier today, Connex has now suspended services on the Upfield line.

Power failures between Flinders St and Richmond, and between Southern Cross and North Melbourne, have caused massive delays.

Passengers at Flinders St station are facing delays of up to 45 minutes.

Ryan Auger of CitiPower said initial estimates indicate at least 235,000 of the company's customers were affected when the system shed 1000 megawatts of power at around 6.30pm.
Auger said it was "probably the most significant load-shedding the state has ever seen".

Say a prayer for all the CFA and SES people fighting the fires all over Victoria. One of my cousins lives in Upper Ferntree Gully and she said the fire there was only 5 minutes away from her place  :(.

Feel for the animals dude.

We lost a mother and baby ringtail in the first one and another today  :'(

Stuff water restrictions I have chucked the sprinkler on a couple of times and the animals have loved it.

Yep we're in the SE suburbs and it's reached here.

They are saying 14 confirmed dead and it could reach as much as 40 dead as there are areas the emergency services can't get into. The fire from Kinglake to Wallan is massive. I know people want to save their homes, property and livestock but you'd think in future when they know days like this are coming they'd force people to get out early.

That was a day straight from hell yesterday.
The smoke clouds from the Yarra Valley fires were drifting over our place, first time junior had seen something like that. His comment 'looks evil' and it does if you have ever seen it.
I remembered ash Wednesday when there were embers dropping from the sky, spooky time and was starting to get a bit worried there for a while. The wind was really howling through at times.
Let's hope we get some rain.

I remember the sun turning red from the smoke during the Ash Wednesday bushfires. Some overseas news reports back in '83 had the whole of Victoria on fire. Mount Macedon 12 months after the fire was still just black all over the ground for all the eye could see with black and grey sticks sticking out of the ground of what was left of the trees. From the footage on the news last night this will be no different especially if the death toll and property loss rises by as much as they are dreading  :(. They are already calling it Black Saturday.
