The most spectacular mark in the VFL in 2019

Most people would wince or look away before an impending clash on the footy field, but sports photographer Michael Klein stays focused on what he sees through the lens.

“Leading up to this moment, I was just following the play like normal,” he says of Marlion Pickett’s gutsy mark that saw him running back with the flight of the ball into a pack of Richmond teammates.

It was a VFL finals match in August against Essendon at Punt Road Oval.

“You’re never expecting a specky but definitely always hoping,” Klein laughs.

“My thought was that it was a bloody good mark by Marlion and if he had taken it in an AFL game it would be talked about for a long time — especially because after this moment, he just went back and kicked the goal.”
