The profit of Australia's oldest sports club has plunged more than 27 per cent after a slump in AFL crowd attendances.The earnings of the Melbourne Cricket Club, the manager of the AFL's premier venue the MCG, were eroded after football crowd numbers fell 10 per cent to 2.7 million in the 12 months to March 31 this year.The MCC committee attributed the decline, which resulted in net profit sliding to $17.86 million, to expansion clubs, Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney, being included in the MCG's football fixture as well as fewer games being held at the ground.The management of the MCG, which hosted 45 home and away games this year – the minimum under its AFL contract – has publicly expressed a desire to have higher-drawing games made a priority rather than the number of matches fixed.Read more: http://www.theage.com.au/business/mcc-profit-slump-blamed-on-newer-clubs-20130802-2r3rv.html#ixzz2apodbRyF
