Nearly every player that has an interupted pre season has struggled during the course of the year.  Being a big player in this instance makes matters even worse.
Irrevelvant of what positive spin the club puts on it and it will find a positive spin no doubt, he will struggle

Didn't Sarge cop a similar injury a couple of years ago?

Richmond football operations manager Paul Armstrong said Simmonds fractured his ankle in a marking contest at training on Monday.

"It was just a simple thing but he landed awkwardly and knew straight away that it wasn't good," Armstrong said. "He was taken for X-rays which confirmed a fracture. He's had a similar injury before. I think during his time at Melbourne."

Simmonds has been told he should be able to resume running in about six weeks.

Looks like Julz will be busy nursing Simmo back to health for the next month or 2 :cuddles :shh
I can do that!

Definitely will be out for 8 weeks.  My son broke his wrist last year and he was out of action for 8 weeks and he didn't have a pin in it or anything.  Simmo will probably wear an ankle brace for a while as well.  Knobel and Patto better start getting their acts together.  Wonder if we could pull Staff out of retirement?

Don't know if it's practical but it would handy if the Club could make use of that harness Browny and Newy used in some way to help Simmo reduce as best as possible any drop in fitness or leg muscle strength.

Id keep him out until round 6 or 7. start him on a 2nd phase preseason and let him rip from r6 onwards.

Opportunity in pre-season now for our rookie Gus Graham as well

Yep opportunity knocks although Gus is still light on size-wise to ruck at AFL level.

True - but I reckon the experience would be invaluable for him - will give him and us a indication of where he is at as they say

Actually my view is it will probably show he's got a lot to learn but you've got to start somewhere  :thumbsup

Agree he should be given a go WP but just sparingly off the extended bench so he doesn't get smashed by the bigger body ruckmen like Stephen King or dare I say Otto  :D.

LOL.

He might be a injury-prone lug whose tapwork goes to the opposition more than his teammates but Otto is still bigger and stronger than Gus at this stage ;). Let Patto ruck with Meyer at his feet against Otto. Remind Geelong what they coughed up  :stupid.

Tiger ruckman's good news for Round 1
18 January 2007   Herald-Sun
Rebecca Williams

RICHMOND ruckman Troy Simmonds yesterday received encouraging news after surgery on his broken ankle.

Simmonds, who injured himself at training on Monday, had a pin inserted in his right ankle on Tuesday night.

"They were pleased with the way that it came out and there were no complications," Richmond football manager Paul Armstrong said yesterday.

"He's still on track to be running in six weeks and playing in Round 1."

Simmonds will wear a special cam-walker boot for about a month.

True he'll still be doubtful or at least well underdone by round 1 but the main thing to get out of that article is there weren't any complications. The last thing we need to hear is it had some long-term effect of his footy career.
