The AFL will be too arrogant to admit they got it wrong and the rule will stand- pun intended, sorry

The stand rule laws seem to have been relaxed quite a bit.

The AFL's Executive General Manager of Football, Laura Kane, said in instances where two or more players look to stand on the mark, the field umpire will nominate which player should stand, allowing others to move out of the protective area.

In the instance on Saturday, Kane said the umpire called for McKay to stand, but the Blues forward seemingly did not hear the call and illegally moved off the mark.

"There's a little bit of common sense that gets applied," Kane told Footy Feed Extra when asked how umpires determine which player should stand the mark.

"If a player self selects and they're the closest to where the mark has been paid and then in fact (is) standing on that mark, it's very clearly them. If two players, which sometimes happens, both go to the spot and the umpire is trying to differentiate who is staying there and who is about to run off, the umpire may select one of the players and instruct them to stay and instruct the other player to get out of the way.

"In the case on the weekend, the umpire has instructed Harry to stay on the mark, but the opposite has occurred and a free kick has been paid.

"It's practical application. If there's one player there, it's very obvious. But sometimes there's not, there's multiple. The controlling umpire closest to the contest and making a decision will make a call and very loudly and clearly tell the players to stay put.

"But in this case, unfortunately, the player has headed off and the 50 metres has been paid."

Exactly so when you are in your office getting paid 500+ and enjoying the percs provided by players putting their bodies on the line in front of thousands of screaming fans where you can barely hear yourself think, show some empathy and admit it was a cocked up decision.

The stats that show why the AFL should undo Hocking’s rule changes

Kane Cornes
The Age
May 16, 2024

Hocking’s think tank had a clear objective. To counter defensive coaches playing “not to lose”, the competition committee wanted an aggressive style of play with free-flowing football, and ease and speed of ball movement. It wanted more one-on-one contests.

In 2021, Hocking doubled down on this approach with the “stand” rule. The player on the mark could not move laterally, becoming a statue as soon as an umpire called “stand”. Any move before “play on” leads to a 50-metre penalty.

The aim was to speed up ball movement and generate easier scoring chances.

However, these rule changes have failed. Completely.

Not only has there been no significant lift in scoring from centre bounces or kick-ins, but umpiring is more complex and players are more challenged in what should be a simple game.

Most concerning is the reaction of the coaches. If it’s easier for the opposition to score, coaches think more defensively.

Bolton instantly copping 50 vs Essendon player getting told 5 times to get back to the mark to 'stand'.

Welcome to the stupid Stand rule  :thumbsdown.

-----

Paid to Essendon, goal; not paid to Richmond, no goal.
That’s your ball game.

I’ll say it again, we are umpired differently.

For an experiment just watch a neutral game and watch how they're umpired...so many calls and non-calls you just know would go the completely opposite way if we were playing... :shh

Geelong CEO Steve Hocking has been left “unsettled” by the amount of “bellyaching” going on in the AFL at the moment.

It comes after Jimmy Bartel asked him what he thinks the most pressing issue is in the competition.

“I can’t believe the amount of things that are being introduced that don’t need to be introduced,” Hocking said.

You mean like every idiotic rule you introduced SHocking, starting with the Stand rule ::).
