We are easily please if we think Astbury is going ok.

How many times does this idiot give away free kicks in a marking contest regardless of who his opponent is.

He is a decent mark of the footy so that means he is a good judge of the footy, just punch the thing- don't grad and give away stupid free kicks.
The most frustrating player in our side imo.

I would like to see him play forward and groom McIntosh to play a roll in defence like the roll Stratton does from Hawthorn.

Also like WP said, he is a real momentum killer. Just so slow to get back off the mark and make a decision.

Astbury makes his mark

richmondfc.com.au
22 May 2017

David Astbury has built on the solid gains he made at the game’s highest level last year and become a quality, dependable key defender within the Richmond line-up this season.

He managed to put together an AFL career-high 19 games in 2016, avoiding significant injury for the first time since 2010, when he made his senior debut with the Tigers.

The confidence he gained from that continuity with his football seems to have been the catalyst for him taking a significant step forward in season 2017.

Astbury produced another first-rate defensive performance for the Tigers in last Saturday’s loss to Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium.

He picked up 14 disposals and took 10 marks, including an equal game-high four intercept grabs.

The 26-year-old is averaging 14.4 disposals and 6.2 marks this season and is ranked 20th in the competition for total marks.

Astbury’s ability to repel opposition attacking thrusts through strong intercept marking has been a feature of his game.

Still slow as balls but I don't think you can question his endeavour. Tries hard does Astbury and it's starting to pay off

Astbury has played all 10 games so far and is averaging 14.5 disposals and 6.1 marks per match.

He is ranked No. 1 among Richmond players for total marks this season (61) and No. 2 for contested marks (15).

The 26-year-old veteran of 70 senior league games has been taking, and negating, the opposition’s key tall forward each week, enabling star Tiger key defender Alex Rance to have more freedom to utilise his attacking skills.

“He’s (Astbury) putting a very, very good season together,” Jack Riewoldt said.

“What he does is he allows Alex (Rance) to really excel at what he does.

“Being that assist player we need is really helping the backline . . .

Hardly think we should be calling Astbury Rock Solid...

Stats show that he has conceded the most goals of any defender this year....
Go Tigers!

Wouldn't be surprised if its true as he has generally been playing on the oppositions best key forward

I would be surprised given he's part of the 3rd stingiest defence in the comp. Brisbane leaked 50%  more goals this year. Each of their defenders probably leaks more goals than our boy Assberry
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Heard this on SEN.

Misleading stat though. He plays on the best forward.

No star, but he's been good this year.

Rewatched Dreamtime game (for the second time) taking specific note of Astbury. Beaten in a contested marking duel once, all the others he either spoiled or took the mark. Sure he had one brain fade but I cant recall a single disposal that was a bad choice. Also had Zero clangers and played 95% game time, bloody good effort.  Very underrated player for me but I have been saying that for long time.

No doubt has improved heaps this season, overall Im very happy with him down back, does more good than bad and not everyone can be a star. Keep working on eliminating those gumby moments Dave
