Rich v Bulldogs
« on: April 14, 2008, 09:49:29 AM »
Is this the biggest game in our recent history, pressure is on to see if we have turned some corner or back to same old.
HUGE GAME

One of my KPI's for this year was to win interstate, 1 box ticked.
Another was to have wins against sides that are in finals contention and in form.
I am gunna have to take a day of work for this now - Don't let me down tiges  :gotigers

brad johnson is the key. he is out of touch and we want it to stay that way.

danger man also is scotty welsh. he always kicks a bag against us.

must win. a thrashing will mean the freo victory was worthless

Robbo on SEN said Terry has a history of getting sides up for a game so in that sense he can coach. The thing about Richmond is whether it was a crunch game or not they need to do perform at that level consistently. What better an opportunity this week than against Plough's old side the Bulldogs. Normally Wallace pumps this game up but the club has told him to keep quiet about the Dogs. Doran disagreed about Plough pumping it up in the past but yep he has been told not to write about the Dogs in the paper. If Richmond doesn't pump up the game then the Dogs will anyway given the history and names involved.

one gets the feeling they will be pumped for this game.
really i dont see why they dont pump themselves up for every game.
even heard sugar say we wanted to prove a point against freo this week. why is that the catalyst for the performance against freo.
it should happen all the time

Past experience tells me, after a decent win, to expect a 60 point drubbing, after being 4-5 goals down at the first change.

The doggies will be pumped as they consider us their rivals  ??? because they don't have any traditional ones. We on the other hand couldn't care less.

The first 5-10 minutes will show if we have turned up.

lets see if they can draw a decent crowd, apparently they have seemed to have lost 8000 members in the mist over in the west. :lol

The dogs will get a decent crowd because our supporters will be there  ;). Not like North where they get 23k to a home game yet claim they have 30k members  :whistle.

I know someone who went to the North game and she said Melbourne supporters outnumbered them. shocking considering the tale of the tape of the two teams.

The biggest factor for this game will be the venue and more pointedly, the size of the ground.

One of the biggest factors to our success against Fremanntle was the size of Subiaco. Our team was purposely loaded up with small quick players to run into space and exploit the oppositions 'slow giants'.

At the smaller Telestra Dome, this strategy is much harder to employ and is the same reason we have such a poor record at the ground over recent years.

Against the Doggies on this ground, just as with all the larger bodied teams, our comparitively  smaller average size is exploited as is any high-possession style of play.

If we are to have any success in this game we need to take a leaf out of the Doggies book and look to create physical pressure, much as we did last week, on the opposition and use it other to make space.

More than likely the Dogies will seek to crowd our run, much like the Kangas did, and intimidate us with their hard tackling. They are also excellent at shepherding and blocking for each other to allow the ball carrier room to run into and to deliver the ball up the ground with pressure. This makes their skills seem very smooth when in reality this is because of the reduced pressure the ball carrier is under when they release the ball because the their teamsmates work off the ball and around them.

The Doggies are also excellent at utilizing the size of Telestra Dome and their teams realitively small forwardline by creating space for their midfield to run into and kick for goal. The forwards are pushed back to the square and the HFs move up the ground leaving room for them to break into, run to the 50 and kick for goal. Many times in the recent past when we played them, I have witnessed this strategy employed continuously with the midfielders moving together in a wave, shepherding our players away from the ball carrier and the ball carrier running into the forwardline. If they couldn't spot up a leading forward they took a shot themselves.

To beat them we need to engage in a similiar strategy to create space to run into for our speedy team, and we need to tackle them to cause spillages. In addition I believe having Richo up the ground again would be very benefical because it will link up play between our back and forwardline much more fluidly. Finally we really need work together in the forwardline this game even more so than last week. We need to have players blocking their teammates defenders to give them space on their direct opponents when they lead. We need to use dummy leads and we need to move the ball quickly onto the forwards, but if the Doggies are flooding we need to wait until a forward can present.

We are goin to find this game much harder because the Doggies play a similiar running game to us but they also use each other much more to create space whereas, up until last week, we have played a more outside/reciever game.

Its all about playing to our strengths and making sure we fill up that area around their F50 to stop them from running into it.

Top post Stripes  :clapping. Yep we've got to stop their run off half-back. The centre bounce clearances are also going to be critical for us. In the past good sides have smashed us out of the midfield at the Dome.

Our record at the Dome was terrific in its first 2 years 2000-1 (8 wins, 3 losses) and it's gone downhill since (11 wins, 26 losses, 1 draw). Under Plough it's 6-12-1 including 3 100+ point losses. The flogging the dogs handed us in R1 2006 was the last time we played them there.

I worry about this game.

The doggies know how to play the ground well and we just don't.

Without space to run into we we be smashed. :(

Eade said today West will miss again and Brad Johnson is only 80-90%. If the game was on Friday instead of Sunday Johnson wouldn't play.

Eade also gave the diplomatic response of saying within their 4 walls they rate us as we have the makings of a reasonable side with the youth and run added through the midfield and defence plus our attacking options and that our two losses came against the top 4 sides of last year so people jumped on us too early.
