All Tony has do now is set up a Ministry of Truth.

Tony Abbott's more controversial speeches disappearDate December 1, 2013
Bianca Hall

Some of Tony Abbott's most controversial speeches have been airbrushed from Coalition history since the election, including a 2009 speech in which he backed a carbon tax, and a 2004 speech in which he described abortion as ''a question of the mother's convenience''.

During Mr Abbott's 2009 carbon tax speech, in which he described himself as a ''climate change realist'', he poured doubt on climate change being man-made, saying: ''We can't conclusively say whether man-made carbon dioxide emissions are contributing to climate change.''

But he went on to say: ''If Australia is greatly to reduce its carbon emissions, the price of carbon-intensive products should rise … a new tax would be the intelligent sceptic's way to deal with minimising emissions.''

In opposition, the speeches were posted on Mr Abbott's website, tonyabbott.com.au. But since the September election, that website has redirected to liberal.org.au, which only archives material back to July 2010, the month before the previous election.

Despite Mr Abbott becoming opposition leader on December 1, 2009, all of his speeches and media statements before July 2010 have disappeared.

However, at least two recent transcripts have also been expunged from the public record. They include an interview on Sky with Chris Kenny in March, in which Mr Abbott vowed to lift foreign aid - a position he later reversed - and a speech to conservative think tank the Institute of Public Affairs this year.

In March, Mr Abbott was quizzed about whether he would heed the advice of former finance minister Nick Minchin, who said the Coalition could save billions by freezing growth in foreign aid.

Despite ongoing anger about how the U.S. government is snooping on people around the world, one agency is still keen to boast about its spying - with a creepy cartoon octopus and an alarming logo.

A top-secret rocket carrying spy satellites for the National Reconnaissance Office launched from the central California coast late on Thursday, and it had a large badge emblazoned on the side

The new logo features a huge and sinister octopus, with just one angry eye visible, as it wraps its tentacles round the globe. Written underneath is: 'Nothing Is Beyond Our Reach.'

The Atlas V rocket lit up the night sky at about 11:15 p.m. Thursday, lifting off from Vandenberg Air Force Base toward low-Earth orbit.

The 19-story-tall rocket carried items for the NRO, which operates the U.S. system of intelligence-gathering satellites.

The agency has not released any details about the payload but it did cover the launch of the rocket live on Twitter.

Many people have expressed doubts over whether the logo is appropriate in the current atmosphere.

Christopher Soghoian, senior policy analyst with the ACLU, tweeted: 'Advice to @ODNIgov: You may want to downplay the massive dragnet spying thing right now. This logo isn't helping.'

Yet Karen Furgerson, an NRO spokesperson, told Forbes that the image and phrase fitted the mission well.

'NROL-39 is represented by the octopus, a versatile, adaptable, and highly intelligent creature. Emblematically, enemies of the United States can be reached no matter where they choose to hide,' she said.

'Nothing is beyond our reach' defines this mission and the value it brings to our nation and the warfighters it supports, who serve valiantly all over the globe, protecting our nation,' Furgerson added.

A California cold snap had threatened a possible delay of the lift-off, but the rocket took off within moments of the opening of its launch window.

Thursday's launch was the second time an Atlas 5 rocket has lifted off from the West Coast this year. Overall, there have been 77 Atlas V launches from Vandenberg and Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The National Reconnaissance Office launched a new satellite called NROL-39 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California late Thursday, but it’s their mission logo that’s getting much more interest.

The logo, featuring a massive octopus straddling the earth with its tentacles above the phrase “Nothing Is Beyond Our Reach” is probably not the best choice from a public-relations standpoint, in light of the many leaks about mass government surveillance from ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

That seems to be the take from Christopher Soghoian, principal technologist and senior policy analyst for the ACLU, who tweeted to the Office of Director of National Intelligence, “You may want to downplay the massive dragnet spying thing right now. This logo isn’t helping.”

Founded in 1961 (but not actually acknowledged until 1992), the NRO designs, builds, launches, and maintains America’s spy satellites.

“NROL-39 is represented by the octopus, a versatile, adaptable, and highly intelligent creature. Emblematically, enemies of the United States can be reached no matter where they choose to hide,” Karen Furgerson, an NRO spokesperson, told Forbes’ Kashmir Hill. “‘Nothing is beyond our reach’ defines this mission and the value it brings to our nation and the warfighters it supports, who serve valiantly all over the globe, protecting our nation.”

The details of the launch and much of the NRO’s work is classified, although William Graham at NASA Spaceflight.com believes NROL-39 will be used for radar imaging:

… it can be inferred that NROL-39 is the third satellite in the NRO’s current-generation radar reconnaissance fleet. It follows the NROL-41 mission, or USA-215, launched in September 2010, and NROL-25 (USA-234) which was launched by a Delta IV in April 2012.

The radar imaging program is believed to be a remnant of the NRO’s Future Imagery Architecture (FIA) program, which was intended to produce new-generation optical and radar-imaging surveillance satellites, replacing the earlier KH-11 and Onyx radar imaging spacecraft.

Obviously not that 'Top Secret' if pics are so freely available. Do you have any insider pics of area 51? Somehow I don't think so....

Doesn't look that spooky to me. After digging for 5 seconds, I found out that its payload actually looks pretty cool. Cube sized satellites!!

fifteen people on their way to a wedding in Yemen were killed in an air strike after their party was mistaken for an al Qaeda convoy, local security officials said on Thursday.

The officials did not identify the plane in the strike in central al-Bayda province, but tribal and local media sources said that it was a drone.

"An air strike missed its target and hit a wedding car convoy, ten people were killed immediately and another five who were injured died after being admitted to the hospital," one security official said.

Five more people were injured, the officials said.

The United States has stepped up drone strikes as part of a campaign against Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), regarded by Washington as the most active wing of the militant network.

Yemen, AQAP's main stronghold, is among a handful of countries where the United States acknowledges using drones, although it does not comment on the practice.

Human Rights Watch said in a detailed report in August that U.S. missile strikes, including armed drone attacks, have killed dozens of civilians in Yemen.

Stabilizing the country, which is also struggling with southern separatists and northern rebels, is an international priority due to fears of disorder in a state that flanks top oil producer Saudi Arabia and major shipping lanes.

On Monday, missiles fired from a U.S. drone killed at least three people travelling in a car in eastern Yemen.

Abbott is a first world problem.

Be thankful that we live in the country that we do.
