Watched Astbury really closely today to see if my opinion of him had changed. Nope, still the human statue.
Batch is 10 times the footballer and he is borderline. Come on Grimes, you are what we need.

Thought I was the only one who thought he resembles a non moving object, just far too reactionary for mine

Would love Grimes back too but until then would go with Batchelor or Astbury every week

See big tone who said we can't agree sometimes  ;D

Went with a couple of metes today WP, that have both played their share of good footy and told them to take special notice of how Astbury goes. Both were horrified how he after one contest  would stand there and spectate. He is no good. Would rather Batch, Griff or even an undersized Dea to fill his role.
Saying that both still laugh at my dislike of Ellis.  :lol

This is symptomatic of Astbury's core strength, ie he is the thinking mans footballer.  He is often thinking ahead two or three plays beyond the present and unfortunately he is frozen in real time.  The blank look so often observed on his face is actually the facade of a feverish mind working behind the scenes.

While still off the consistency required of a player his age and experience - seeing Griggs attack the ball and laying tackles was good to see it is possible.
Too often  Griggamortus sets in when a hard ball needs to be won but when there's an opportunistic goal to be kicked Griggy Pops up
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

At the game, I didn't think Astbury did that well.  After watching the replay, I changed my mind.  Rarely beaten and tried hard.  Obviously would be better for the run.
As has been said, he will improve given a stretch of games.  His running backwards and copping it from Morris accidentally showed real courage.  Doubt Batch would have done that.
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.
