Yze's presser:

------------------------

Without Lynch and Balta the Tigers have struggled to produce a competitive score, but Yze said they remained committed to playing attacking, exciting football regardless of personnel or facing strong opposition.

“We have no issue with wanting to play an aggressive brand of footy … we have a go, we want to win the ball back really quickly and take the game on,” he said.

“We want to play an exciting brand of footy on offence, so we want to bring that out on Sunday.”

The Tigers are putting Prestia through an extensive training block while Balta pushed for selection this week, but Richmond took a "no-risk" approach with both.

"To have those guys close to selection, hopefully being available next week, is exciting," he said.

Yze noted the Tigers couldn't help some of their injuries, while small soft-tissue injuries made the situation look worse.

"The majority of our injuries have just been unlucky and ... it's a no-risk policy," he said.

"So yeah, little one-week injuries here and there are going to make it look worse.

"But ... we're going to support our players and make sure their welfare is the most important thing."

Yze's press conference was the morning after Port Adelaide captain Connor Rozee played off hamstring tightness, only to re-injure himself on Thursday night.

He noted the Power would have been "kicking themselves" over that call.

Richmond hopes Graham will miss just a week.

"If this was a final, there's a chance that he could play but he's just too important," Yze said.

"To go and risk one of our key leaders and a really important player in our footy club and in our team, to go and risk him this week and the chance of him hurting it again and going out for a month would just be crazy, irrelevant of how many guys we've got injured at the moment."

RICHMOND

Strength

In what’s been a period of change for the Tigers including Adem Yze taking over the coaching reins, they’ve shown defensive improvements over the last month. During that stretch, Richmond has ranked eighth in opposition score per inside 50 percentage (43%) and points against from turnovers (42%), with a new-look back six holding up without Noah Balta and Josh Gibcus down there.

Weakness

The Tigers midfield has never been a great strength — not even during their golden era — and that trend has continued. Richmond has ranked 17th in contested possessions and 18th in both clearances and points from stoppages. Of course, it hasn’t helped that the likes of Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper and Dion Prestia have missed considerable time due to injury.

Tactical changes from last year

Though only a minor tweak, the Tigers are kicking shorter under Yze. Ranked first in the competition in kick long percentage last year, they’ve dropped down to eighth in 2024.

Health check

63 games lost to injury (3rd-most)

Barrett in his Sliding Doors column:

"New coach Adem Yze being given no chance to make an impact in his debut season. Lynch, Balta, Taranto, Prestia, Hopper, Gibcus, Ross all still out."

Richmond Rant / Re: Trent Cotchin [merged]

A PREMIERSHIP captain for the Richmond Tigers will don navy blue this month – but relax Richmond fans, it’s for a local footy club, not Carlton.

The Carlton Draft took place on Tuesday 30 April, with five grassroots football clubs, including the Ballan Blues, picking a retired AFL player to play a game for their club.

Ballan selected Richmond great Trent Cotchin, who will bring slick skills and leadership qualities that are second to none, having captained Richmond to three premierships and won a Brownlow Medal to boot.

Ballan Football Netball Club President David O’Hanlon said he was thrilled to have someone of Cotchin’s calibre at the Blues.

“We’re really happy. To get someone like Trent Cotchin to your club doesn’t happen every day,” Mr O’Hanlon said.

“We’ve had a bit of a rough couple of years with new renovations taking way longer than expected, so to get an AFL superstar who pretty much everyone in the country knows is pretty special.

“We had our first home game since 2021 a few weeks ago, and in a few weeks’ time we’ve got Trent coming to town, so it’ll be massive.

”When asked where the club plans to play Cotchin – in the midfield as he played for Richmond, or elsewhere – Mr O’Hanlon joked that Cotchin could “play wherever he wants”.

“I’m sure he’ll have a run through the midfield at some stage, we’d love to see him kick a goal and the crowd celebrate,” he said.

“Having someone like Trent with three premierships, and captain of probably the biggest and most passionate club in the AFL, we were pretty keen to go for him, and it’s come our way.”

Cotchin said he was looking forward to pulling on a Ballan jumper.

“I’m excited to get out there. You watch the Seniors growing up playing for your local footy club, and realise how big it is for the community,” Mr Cotchin said.

“Mum did barrack for Carlton when I was growing up, so I think I’ll be alright putting on a navy blue jumper…and it’s way better than putting on a jumper in Collingwood colours!

“I’m looking forward to it, and trying a few different parts of the field, seeing what the game throws up.

”Each player will play one game for the club who selected them, with match days set to commence from late May.

Trent Cotchin will play for Ballan at the Ballan Recreation Reserve for the Round 8 game against Newlyn, which kicks off at 2.30pm on Saturday 1 June.

I remember the Carlton round 1 game really vividly. He looked on from the get go and by the time he launched that torp from D50 I think we all got a sense of “stuff we might have a decent season this year”

People crap on about “Dangerfield had a statistically better year” but no one broke the game open to the level martin did that year with insane field passes and goals when we needed them the most. His don’t argue on Tom Stewart in the QF is also forever living rent free in my brain

Never would I have thought we’d win the premiership though.
