MRJ won’t make it as a footballer IMO.. 20 games in so he has time, but he was a late pick for a reason.

I’d also like to see Morris moved on when our new coach comes in. Fresh ideas and voice. Time to go Morris.

Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

Disgusting performance.  Sonsie looks lazy and timid.  Not interested in winning contested ball

After a few close calls on senior selection Sam Banks keeps getting closer to an AFL debut and was again among the best for Richmond's VFL team.

Banks grabbed 24 disposals and kicked a goal in the Tigers' 45-point loss to Werribee at the Swinburne Centre on Sunday.

Classy midfielder Tyler Sonsie and running defender Tom Brown had 21 touches each and will also be in contention for a call up should a senior spot open up soon, while Thomson Dow had 12 disposals.

Another in the frame is Maurice Rioli jnr, although the small forward was quiet in his return from a hamstring injury, finishing with just six disposals and four tackles, while Steely Green was off target, kicking 0.3 from nine disposals.

Big men Bigoa Nyuon (nine disposals, 15 hitouts) and Ben Miller (10, nine) showed their adaptability taking turns in the ruck, key forward Kaelen Bradtke kicked one goal but Jacob Bauer was quiet.

Mid-season draftee James Trezise finished with 14 disposals and seven marks, while fellow MSD selection Matthew Coulthard had nine touches.

Harry Broderick, son of former Richmond best and fairest winner Paul, played his first game for the Tigers' VFL side, and while he had limited involvement, the club will be watching the 178cm midfielder closely ahead of this year's draft.

VFL Tigers fall to Werribee

By Brenton Mann
Richmond Media
11 June 2023

Richmond VFL couldn’t get the points in the battle of the Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the Swinburne Centre, as a well-drilled Werribee held sway by 45 points.

The home Tigers highlighted why they can match it with any side in the competition in the second term, however their brashness of youth wasn’t there for four quarters, the final score reading, 4.13 (37) def. by 11.16 (82).

“Play an open game with speed.”

Steve Morris’ pre-game can be applied to both the offensive and defensive phases of the game, with Mykelti Lefau a poster boy for the latter.

Lefau made his presence felt early in the first quarter, with a bone-crunching tackle on the outer wing.

Tom Brown made a successful return from injury along with Lefau last week against the Giants and glided across the turf from the opening bounce.

The return of Maurice Rioli was a welcome one, as he stalked, smothered, and tackled his way through the opening term.

Richmond showed it was up for the fight, however, Werribee made the most of its opportunities forward of centre when the home Tigers didn’t.

The travelling Tigers held a four-goal lead at the first change, which Richmond swiftly ate into in the second term.

Richmond tooth-and-nail inside the contest, then injected speed into the game off half-back as they locked the ball in their front-half.

Fifty-game skipper, Lachlan Street then put his head in the hole, earning himself a free-kick and most importantly, converted his set-shot from as tight angle, opening Richmond’s goal account.

The Tigers ratcheted it up around the ball, forcing Werribee into turnovers, then exploding offensively with ball-in-hand.

Lefau reeled in ex-Richmond player, Bailey Henderson at half-back, which set the Tigers in motion as they surged the ball through the corridor, ending with a craft crumbing goal by Angus Hicks.

Lefau was running full steam ahead, as he forced yet another turnover with a hulking tackle, then smartly handed the ball to Sam Banks, who breached the paint of 50 and kicked truly.

Richmond’s inaccuracy in-front-of-goal meant Werribee clung to an 11-point lead at half-time.

Werribee slotted the opening two goals of the third term, extending their lead to north of three goals.

With time ticking on late in the third term, Banks clutched an intercept mark on the Jack Dyer Stand wing, wearing a clip across the scone for good measure.

The wingman was undeterred, driving the ball deep inside 50 where Kaelan Bradtke wrapped his mitts around the Sherrin and slotted the Tigers’ fourth major.

Another ex-Tiger, Shaun Mannagh answered back swiftly for the visitors, reinstating his side’s four-goal lead.

Werribee, a seasoned outfit and one of the form sides of the competition, showed why in the final term. They played the game in their half for the majority of the last quarter, constricting Richmond’s explosive ball movement and incrementally increased their lead.

The hosts were held scoreless, whilst Werribee slotted three majors which iced the game.

RICH   0.5       3.10     4.13     4.13 (37)

WERR 4.5       5.9       8.11     11.16 (82)

Goal Kickers:

Richmond: Banks, Street, Bradtke, Hicks

Best Players: Banks, Sonsie, Brown, Brindley, Johnson, Street

Sadly, no one put their hand up in the VFL today. In fact, a few wrecked their chances instead :P.

With Young's position in the AFL side looking dicey, you would've hoped Biggie and Bauer would've had strong games but instead they had their worst of the season.

Dow played like he knew his papers are stamped and he won't be a Punt Rd after this season.

Bradtke looks like he won't be with us either. Key forwards shouldn't be left stranded flat-footed 15m behind their opponent.

Maurice had a shocker. He hasn't played for six weeks and it looked like it. Mind you he's been mishandling the footy before he got injured. Sadly gone backwards this year.

Trezise another who had his worse game. Especially the first 2.5 quarters where he fumbled and turned over the ball.

Brown got a lot of the ball because he was playing in defence and doing the kick-ins. Tried to create but the team was rubbish as a whole so most of it didn't come off.

Banks had his usual unassuming game. Again because the ball was mostly in our defensive half.

Sonsie reflected the game. He was very good in the 2nd quarter and was one of the reasons we got back into the game by half-time, but he hardly had any impact in the second half. We had Biggie, Sonsie, Dow & Street at centrebounces yet we got totally smashed in the guts and centre clearances all day.

Miller at least contested from the start of the game. Another whose first half was better than the second IMO. Potential replacement option for Young given Biggie & Bauer were poor.

Coulthard - young kid. Needs a preseason or two and build strength.

Green - 3 behinds and no goals.
