If it is in fact true that his knee was spent before the season even started and he only played because he had another year on his contract then it is extremely selfish and disappointing that he chose to retire now.
It should've been before the season even started.

“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Right decision to retire. Believe he would have been delisted at the end of the season if had not retired. Good luck to him for his future.

Does his retirement allow the promotion of another rookie?

Seeing though ability  is suddenly overrated, i can only hope the said rookie is an 'individual'

Chaplin announces retirement

richmondfc.com.au  July 19, 2016 3:49 PM

Richmond defender Troy Chaplin has announced his retirement from AFL football, effective immediately.

Chaplin will remain with the Tigers, in a coaching capacity, until the end of the year.

The 30-year-old informed the Club’s playing group of his decision on Tuesday afternoon.

He played eight senior games this year, taking his league career total to 215.

Chaplin played 140 games in nine seasons at Port Adelaide, before joining Richmond as a restricted free agent at the end of 2012.

Richmond General Manager of Football, Dan Richardson, thanked the veteran defender for the excellent service he has provided the Tigers with throughout the past four years.

“Troy has been an outstanding contributor to the Club over the past four seasons,” Richardson said.

“He has been a fine role model for the playing group with his determination, professionalism and leadership.

“Troy has always maintained a high standard of performance, highlighted by his top-three finish in the Jack Dyer Medal in 2013.”

“We are delighted that he has agreed to remain at the Club in a coaching capacity. Troy has a great football brain and there is little doubt he has a bright future as a coach."
