Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says Chris Newman still the man ... for now

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick says he's in no hurry to hand Trent Cotchin the captaincy, insisting "at this stage" Chris Newman will remain in charge next season.

Tigers' legend Matthew Richardson declared Cotchin will be Richmond's next leader, but Hardwick said he was in no rush to anoint a successor to Newman.

"At this stage he (Newman) is (captain next year)," Hardwick said.

"He's been outstanding.

"There's no rush on the captaincy, no rush at all ... that's something we'll work our way through in due course. Chris has been outstanding in that role.

"Captains sort of know when their time's come to pass over the baton so to speak, but that'll be something we'll work through over the course of the next 12-24 months."

Hardwick ruled out making a play for Adelaide forward Kurt Tippett, but the Tigers are still interested in out-of-contract Magpie Travis Cloke.

"We still firmly believe he'll be at Collingwood (next season). If it falls down, we'll work our way through that," he said.

Great move Tigers :thumbsup Let the Cotch concentrate on his footy for another season, let the club get some half decent blokes around him then let the great man ride the Tiger train to Glory  :gotigers

makes sense to me
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

You people amaze me.

Maybe Cotch should be captain ad Newman shoul concentrate on his game.
DIMMA - You will be held ACCOUNTABLE...

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

Newman can wear the #17 for as long as he wants. IMO Cotchin is the on field leader/captain that inspires our team along with Deledio.

They can put it off for another season in an 'official' sense, but for mine we know who leads the way by example on game day.

I agree with you, if the rate of his decline continues. Champions of the game can go on into their 30's for years without getting caught out. Unfortunately for Newy, he isn't a Champion, just a good average footballer and time is catching up on him very quickly.

As others have said, may do him some good to pass it on sooner rather than later.  :clapping

Id say fair chance Newy will hand it over. He seems like a descent enough guy to know when his times up and that is now.

Does sound like Dimma was stating they won't make him hand it over, and he'll know when to.  :rollin
