SHOULD SHAI BOLTON KNOCK BACK THE BIG MONEY AND RE-SIGN WITH RICHMOND?

By Nic Negrepontis
SEN
7 June 2021

Richmond's Shai Bolton looms as one of the more interesting out of contract players in the AFL.

The forward’s value has skyrocketed this year, kicking goals in big games and finding more of the ball.

He has gone from an x-factor player to a star. His efforts against Essendon in Round 12 arguably separated the two teams.

Bolton’s manager Ralph Carr has stated his client is in no rush to re-sign with Richmond and while he could find a huge pay day elsewhere, David King believes Bolton should stick with the Tigers.

“It’s very simple. Shai Bolton, if you want to go and earn $1 million a season, you can go and get it, but that will still be there in three years time,” King told SEN’s Whateley.

“Right now, we’re in the window. We’ve already won our flags and we’re going again.

“We’ve probably got two or three more opportunities here.

“So you can sit back, and you’ll hardly be a pauper, you’ll probably be on $650,000 a year. Which is great money for you at your age while you build your reputation and your craft, while you destroy the competition.

“We want to build you into the next Dustin Martin. So go and ask Dustin what it was like when he could have gone to the Kangaroos. He stayed and look at it now.

“The money is the money now. It corrects. If your career goes on the trajectory, and all these other clubs are telling you that it will, but stay here, follow the course that Dustin’s mapped out for you.

“Put a five-year period together of excellence, then cash in. This kid’s going nowhere. Why would you leave?

“The grass is always greener, I get that. In terms of finance, it’s attractive that you’re worth that sort of investment. Richmond are the most enjoyable team to be involved in. They’ve got enough stars that not all of them have to star every week.

“And it’s about winning flags. You’d rather win another premiership and leave a couple hundred thousand dollars on the floor over a 10-year period.”

Anyone paying him $1mil/year is crazy.

Even an outside club wanting to throw the sink shouldn't be paying more than $800k.

Even an outside club wanting to throw the sink shouldn't be paying more than $800k.

Look at what Carlton are paying Zac Williams and Jack Martin or what the Saints are paying Brad Hill. There’s clubs out there looking for star talent and distractions to team performance like star signings that command $900-1m per year
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Wanted man: How much is young Tiger worth?

An AFL legend says a rival club would offer Shai Bolton up to $900,000 to leave Punt Road. So what should the Tigers pay him to stay?

Why Shai won’t listen to Tigers’ offers — yet

In-demand Richmond young gun Shai Bolton has put off contract talks with the Tigers until the end of the season, Jon Ralph writes.

THE SURPRISING INFLUENCE ON BOLTON’S CONTRACT DECISION

By Andrew Slevison
SEN
8 June 2021

Former Richmond assistant coach Justin Leppitsch admits he was shocked to learn just how much of an influence Ralph Carr has on his clients.

The music mogul has a small stable of AFL players within his management enterprise including Tigers superstar Dustin Martin and fellow triple premiership player Daniel Rioli.

Also on the books is Mabior Chol, Geelong’s Quinton Narkle and current Tigers darling Shai Bolton, who is attracting plenty of media attention with his contract up at the conclusion of this season.

Rival clubs are showing interest in the 22-year-old Western Australian talent and his signature promises to be a prized possession for whoever lands it.

Leppitsch, who worked closely with Bolton between 2017 and 2020, believes the decision - surprisingly to him - is in very good hands with his manager Carr.

“I was talking to (Richmond list manager) Blair Hartley and I asked him about player managers and do they help or hinder the player,” Leppitsch said on SEN’s Whateley.

“Are they good to say, ‘the coach says you still have to work on A,B and C and you’ll get a bigger contract’, or so on and so forth.

“I asked, ‘who’s the best at that type of thing?’, and he said, ‘you’d be very surprised but it’s Ralph Carr’. That did shock me at the time.

“We spoke about it and it shocked you to think that Ralph Carr is the one that actually sits his players down and says, ‘mate, do the hard work, get it right and I’ll get you the contract’.

“It’s funny that Shai has had that move to Ralph as well. Dustin was his one and only for a long period of time and now Mabior Chol has jumped on board as well.

“You need that as an influence around you, you need to have your most important influences giving you the right advice.

“That could be really important in Shai’s development to have someone around him that gives him that sort of advice.”

Having spent four seasons witnessing first-hand how Bolton has developed his game from a flashy small forward into a prime-moving midfielder who kicks goals, Leppitsch has been somewhat taken aback by what he’s seen.

He now rates Bolton as a player who possesses everything required to flourish in the modern game.

“What a player he’s becoming,” he added.

“He’s the sort of player that you almost need a state-of-the-art HD TV to see him change direction because it’s so fast that it’s like, ‘what just happened right there?’

“You slow it down and realise the mechanics of his movement is quite amazing. At times he looks off balance but can still keep his feet and change direction, settle and then kick a goal. It’s like his arms and legs don’t belong to his body.

“I don’t know how he puts it all together but he’s an amazing player. His growth as a player is huge.

“From someone who saw him as a young player in the game, there’s no way you’d expect his growth to be where it’s at. He always had the offensive talent but now combination-wise he’s got everything.”

Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph revealed on Fox Sports News’ AFL Tonight that the West Australian is still far apart on a new contract with Richmond. It follows earlier reports that Fremantle and West Coast are looking to lure him back home.

And while Bolton’s manager Ralph Carr reportedly expects a deal to eventually get done with the Tigers, Bolton is believed to be happy to wait until the end of the season as his stocks rise weekly.

“It is effectively a contract impasse for Richmond and Shai Bolton. He’s probably still going to stay but it’s going to take them all the way through to the end of the season to get this signature done,” Ralph told Fox Sports News’ AFL Tonight

“His manager Ralph Carr has told me several times this year that he believes his player will stay — he wants him to stay and he keeps telling Shai Bolton that that’s what he should do.

“Richmond wants to put a contract offer to him, but Bolton himself is the one who is adamant he won’t consider a new contract until the end of the season, he wants it to play out.”

Complicating matters for Richmond is their need to also lock down the likes of Callum Coleman-Jones, Marbior Chol and Daniel Rioli on new deals, while Shane Edwards, Jack Riewoldt and Bachar Houli are all eligible for free agency at season’s end.

Coleman-Jones and Chol have both reportedly received interest from rival clubs as Richmond face several big contract decisions in the next 12 months.

“It’s an issue for Richmond because his price keeps going up by the week ... and how does Richmond offer contracts to the likes of Callum Coleman-Jones, Mabior Chol and even their experienced free agents in Shane Edwards and Jack Riewoldt when they don’t know how much money they need for this star player?” Ralph added.

“Carr has told other clubs he doesn’t believe Bolton will leave Richmond, but it just raises the spectre of another club at the end of the season missing out on finals or knowing that they need a player like Bolton and offering him that million dollar a year, spectacular, can’t refuse deal.

“I still think the expectation is he’ll stay but it’s going to take Richmond a very long time to get this signature done.”

Bolton is coming off a sensational performance in his team’s Dreamtime win over Essendon on Saturday night at Optus Stadium – gathering 21 disposals and booting three goals.

AFL 360 co-host Mark Robinson was full of praise for the ace midfielder, labelling him the “best 22-year old I’ve seen for a long, long time.”

“Juddy (Chris Judd) at 21 (years of age) was unbelievable and has Shai Bolton covered. But there’s not many (players) at 22 years of age who can do what this kid can do,” Robinson said on Fox Footy’s AFL 360 on Monday night.

“He’s a pleasure to watch, even if you don’t barrack for Richmond.”

What's he worth if we are forced to trade?

Low first rounder + good player? 2 first rounders?

Maybe Cerra + Freo 1st round?

RICHMOND COACH HARDWICK COMMENTS ON BOLTON CONTRACT SITUATION

By Alex Zaia
SEN
9 June 2021

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick hopes emerging star Shai Bolton is willing to stay at the Tigers for less money amid reports of a contract impasse.

Bolton, 22, is coming out of contract and is yet to agree to terms on a new deal with the reigning premiers as his value continues to soar on the back of some scintillating form.

“It’s always the challenge, isn’t it? In good sides, the players play for less and they’ve got an understanding of that,” Hardwick told SEN Breakfast.

“They’ll always get paid more elsewhere … but we think our players and our organisation creates a great culture that players want to stay and be a part of that.

“I think the vast majority of those guys will sacrifice to stay and we hope Shai is one of those players.

Stay up to date with all the latest news from SEN. Sign up HERE.

“He’s a prodigious talent, you’ve only got to look at the last 12 minutes of that game (against Essendon) to see what he can do and the improvement level he’s still got in front of him is enormous.

“We think he’ll stay but until he puts his signature on the dotted line we don’t know.”

Bolton is one of several Richmond players that are without contracts for next year.

Veterans Jack Riewoldt, Shane Edwards and Bachar Houli are eligible for free agency while Daniel Rioli, Callum Coleman-Jones, Marbior Chol are also remain unsigned.
