While I understand the reasoning, the risk of moving Astbury around and potentially damaging his confidence and form is far greater than the potential benefit IMO.

Leave our defence alone for mine. It's our greatest strength right now.

Exactly this. We finally have a 2nd tall defender who is giving Rance help down back and we want to move him around?

Astbury is the reason Rance is off the chain this season. He is playing a huge role.
Gotta disagree. Rance is playing no different to what he has done in previous seasons and that is perform at AA level in most things,  and Astbury is still doing what he did last yr and that is defend very well and get a bit of ball..

I hope none of us manage to look past the fact that we have just the two KPDS on the list and there is great need for two more.

Are We are in a place where we will have to rob peter to pay paul to address needs at the other end of the ground? Possibly.

We have two ways to go.

WE play Riewoldt and Astbury fwd and then play Rance 194cm  Grimes 193cm McIntosh 192cm   and Even Garthwaite 193cm down back. There are at lest tall defensive options even if they arent kpp size. If we keep it as is and there are good reasons why we should then surely we have to just throw what tall fwd  options we have in the deep end, as bt says we need to do something different.

Why not

Small fwd - Chol  -  Garthwaite
Small fwd - Riewoldt - Small fwd

What i dont get is it seems its okay to keep playing Castagna Rioli Bolton Butler because we get a bit of defensive pressure but we get stuff all else out of them. as a collective they are not kicking a lot of goals, they are not getting a lot of ball they arent even laying a lot of tackles. In many ways we are just putting games into them and speeding up development so the question has to be asked why not do the same with a few talls.

Given David Astbury’s consistency of performance across Richmond’s backline throughout the 2017 season, he must surely be a contender for selection in this year’s All-Australian squad.

The key Tiger defender is averaging 15.4 disposals and 6.6 marks per match this season. He’s ranked 11th in the competition for total marks, and has been repelling countless opposition attacking moves through his first-rate interception ability.

Astbury again was prominent for Richmond in its win against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium last Saturday night.

He had 19 disposals, an equal game-high nine intercepts, six score involvements and took a team-high nine marks, including a game-high four intercept grabs.

I have always rated arseberry, even before he got taken out for a long spell, I had him above the weirdo.  At the end of the day we got two good side kicks for Rance up there now in Weirdo and  Dingles.

Id argue we could play all 4 of Rance, Astubury, Lever and Grimes in the backline

Rance to play as CHB/on baller/CHF and pinch hit in the ruck if we get Lever.

I reckon Rance would make an awesome onballer  :gotigers

Bringing in Lever would give us the scope to do all those things.... :shh

I seem to recall him being a go in the middle before by Dimma and it ended in tears.
