Blair Hartley's update on Dusty.

Dustin Martin’s progress:
“He’s tracking really well. He’s had some positive scans. He’s been here doing extra work and he’s tracking well for the start of pre-season. We are pumped for what he can do next year because he’s pretty motivated.

"He [Dusty] looks fantastic, he's lost a lot of weight. If he keeps a bit of it off he might be able to play even more in the midfield which will make him even better. He seemed to be in really good shape."

Dusty ‘unfulfilled’ by incredible AFL success

In 2017 Dustin Martin won a premiership, the Brownlow, the Norm Smith medal and Player of the Year, but all it made him feel was pressure not success.

Dustin Martin reveals all: The Story Continues book extract.

Sunday Herald Sun
October 17, 2021

After climbing to the top of the AFL mountain with his breathtaking on-field performances in 2017 Dustin Martin suddenly found himself with great expectations on his shoulders but little motivation.

He was a ‘human doing’ instead of a ‘human being’.

He needed someone to get inside his head and help him find his purpose.

In this edited extract from a new book The Story Continues by Dustin Martin it is revealed who Martin turns to for mentoring and his exploration of spirituality, self-awareness and self-worth.

Of course, achieving great things doesn’t always lead to fulfilment.

By the end of the 2017 season, Dustin Martin had won the premiership, and the Brownlow Medal, and the Norm Smith Medal, as well as the Gary Ayres Award for best player in the final series, then Player of the Year awards from both the AFL Coaches Association and the AFL Players’ Association, a second straight Jack Dyer Medal, too, not to mention an All Australian guernsey and a host of media awards all lauding his greatness.

Martin turned to another voice that rings in the ears of critical people at Tigerland, the life coach, professional mentor, athlete whisperer and storyteller Ben Crowe.

Crowe was once the youngest ever director at Nike, and in his second career has turned to working with professional athletes to unlock their stories, and their full self.

He has helped world number one tennis star Ash Barty, champion surfer Steph Gilmore, Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson, star wheelchair athlete Dylan Alcott, as well as groups, too – from the Australian cricket side to the senior leadership team at Facebook, a conference of Fortune 500 CEOs and members of the US Special Forces.

At Richmond, he has worked with president Peggy O’Neal, senior coach Damien Hardwick and captain Trent Cotchin – and in early 2018 he found himself face-to-face with Dustin Martin.

‘Dusty was feeling unfulfilled,’ Crowe says.

‘He had achieved, but he was unsatisfied, and was trying to make sense of those feelings, and was frustrated with the expectations of having to do it again next year.’

Crowe has worked with him in a mentoring capacity ever since.

Crowe explains: ‘If Dusty’s self worth is predicated on whether he wins another flag, or another Norm Smith Medal, well, that’s a pretty miserable existence, because he can’t control that.

‘Does that mean if he doesn’t win another one that he’s not good enough, or not worthy?’

‘It’s this idea of a human doing instead of a human being,’ Crowe says.

‘If you have to do something – achieve something – to be somebody, you’ll never be fulfilled or content or at peace or satisfied.

‘So we talked about what he wants to be going forward.

‘Brave and caring?

‘Adventurous and strong?

‘Because he can control that. He can’t control footy results.

‘Dusty was keen to courageously explore the depths of who he is, and find that unconditional self worth.

‘Watching an individual like him lean into something that most alpha males do not has been wonderful to see.

‘He went on that journey, and it’s been beautiful. The exploration of who he is and what lights him up, and what his values are and what his motivations are, and what his purpose is and his goals are – and who he is – has been deep. ‘And it meant he could then answer the second important question: What does he want out of life?’

Life coach Crowe points out that Martin loves poetry and quotes, the Gaia app – which produces documentaries and series about ancient wisdom, the nature of the universe, and unexplained phenomena.

The thing that might surprise people most about Martin, says Crowe, is his spirituality, from his Maori roots to his embrace of elements of Buddhism – not to mention the self-improvement and self-awareness literature on his night stand (such as) The Power of Now, the Japanese book The Courage to be Disliked, as well as Way of the Peaceful Warrior and the Toltec wisdom book The Four Agreements.

‘His voracious reading would surprise the hell out of people,’ Crowe says.

Still, he has his sanctuaries.

The rhythm and thud of a private boxing ring. Hours upon hours in the saddle of a road bike. Silent solo swims in the brine of Port Phillip. And of course the football field itself, in front of a madding crowd.

Martin’s ultimate purpose, in his own words?

He wants to help make people feel loved and appreciated, their lives a bit better and a bit happier.

How does he want to be remembered?

As a loving, caring, loyal person – someone who’s real and genuine, fun and funny to be around.

The values he holds dear are resilience, which he defines as not giving up.

And optimism, including the genuine belief that something positive will come from all experiences, good and bad.

And acceptance, in realising you can’t change what has happened, and accepting this is the superpower that will allow him to move forward without worry.

The REAL story of why Dustin Martin was spotted with Serena Williams in the Maldives

By Caleb Taylor
Daily Mail Australia
19:33 EDT, 23 October 2021

AFL superstar Dustin Martin was spotted soaking-up the sun with tennis legend Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian back in 2019.

And now the real story behind their unexpected friendship has been revealed.

Herald Sun reported on Sunday that Martin and Williams share a mutual friend - Australian celebrity 'mindset coach' Ben Crowe.

Unlikely friends: The REAL story of why AFL superstar Dustin Martin (pictured) was spotted with American tennis legend Serena Williams and her husband in the Maldives Alexis Ohanian back in 2019

The publication reports that Martin was travelling at the time with Hollywood talent agent Jessica Steindorff, who was also being mentored by Crowe.

The group met up thanks to their mutual connection to Crowe, who is also responsible for mentoring the likes of tennis champion Ash Barty.

Dustin surprised fans back in November of 2019 after he was spotted with the American tennis star and her husband.

In a clip posted to Williams' Instagram, the pair are seen with her Reddit co-founder husband Alexis Ohanian enjoying the sun, sand and surf.

The group were filmed enjoying food and drinks while Ohanian mixed music in the background.

Dustin appeared relaxed, grinning at the camera while enjoying a holiday beverage.

Another image showed Martin and Ohanian standing in the shallows waiting to board a speed boat.

Williams has gushed about their time at the idyllic holiday spot in her latest Instagram post.

'Today is our last day in this glorious place, we've had so much fun. We are living our best lives eating fried chicken sandwiches,' she said in a video update.

Fun in the sun: Clips posted to social media showed the group enjoying Australian chef Dave Pynt's renowned restaurant The Ledge as well as getting ready to board a speed boat (pictured)

The footage surprised footy fans, as Martin's friendship with Williams was previously unknown.

'This has to be fake,' one Twitter user noted at the time, while another asked: 'What's going on here?'

The holiday capped off a stellar season for Martin after he helped lead the Richmond Tigers to their second premiership in three years.

Dustin Martin enjoyed an extraordinary season in 2017, winning the Brownlow Medal and Norm Smith Medal to go along with the Tigers' drought-breaking premiership.

But how did he gain such an edge on the competition?

Richmond’s strength and conditioning coach Luke Meehan joined the very first episode of The Inside Game podcast, and revealed how the Tigers superstar trains differently to other players.

"[Martin]'s just so genetically blessed, and very driven," Meehan told host Bec Goddard.

"If anything, we kind of do less than what we would do with other guys.

"He's so powerful and has such brute force, he doesn't require a lot of work in the gym.

"We like to do the bare minimum with him to get the maximum result."

Meehan said Martin's gym workload wasn't as intense as some of his teammates, and also revealed how programs are tailored to each player's strengths, not their weaknesses.

Martin was left with a lacerated kidney after a collision against the Brisbane Lions in July. His season was prematurely ended and he ultimately lost about 10 kilograms as he was put on a diet predominantly of fruit after surgery.

The 260-game veteran has resumed eating more substantial foods and has been seen running at Punt Rd, prompting Martin to recently declare he felt “better than he has ever been”.

Gale said Martin, listed at 93 kilograms, may opt to not put all the lost weight back on, for this could help him spend more time in the midfield in a season when the Tigers are determined to rebound from missing the finals and return to a premiership threat.

“He is going well. He lost a lot of weight by virtue of his diet after his kidney injury but he looks really, really fit,” Gale said.

“He may choose to keep a bit of that weight off because he is just naturally strong and powerful. It might increase his running power, his transition running, maybe more midfield time. He is just so driven. He is really, really hungry.

dustinlmartin - "It’s great to be aligned with brands I believe in. Pumped to be ambassador for @archiesfootwear. I’ve been wearing them for years so when they approached me it was an easy decision. They look great, are super comfortable and, as they have the arch support, are really good for your feet."

The person I spoke to at training today lives near Dusty and regularly sees him down at the local beach. Said Dusty is leaner but looking really fit, ripped and ready to go for a big 2022. Fingers crossed :pray.
