Tigers relying on the same list: Crunch Time

Joshua Papanikolaou
SEN
27 Mar 2016

Richmond has not upgraded their list from last season, apart from an unfit Chris Yarran, and if they do not see significant improvement from their second-tier players then the results will not change, says Dermott Brereton.

On Thursday night the Tigers barely overcame Carlton in a season opener that should have been a perfect gimme to kick-start their campaign for desperately needed finals success later this year.

“The one thing with Richmond, they’re relying on internal improvement,” said Brereton on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“Any team you look at has literally improved their list over the off-season, Richmond got Yarran and he’s not playing.

“You can’t say they’ve improved their list, so they are relying on the same list that got knocked over in the first week of finals the last three years.”

Mark Robinson is also concerned that Damien Hardwick still does not have all the ideal weapons at his disposal to contend for a premiership, despite this being his seventh season in charge.

“I don’t think mentally they were there because if that’s what Richmond is going to dish up without Deledio and others they’re certainly not going to make finals,” he said.

“Another thing, they went after Hannebery, Treloar and Armitage – they know they need some outside run and ball carriers.

“They went after Yarran and that’s not working out.”

According to David King it was clear that the Blues ought to have won the game at the MCG and the Tigers still have a lot of work to do organising their forward setup.

“Richmond didn’t win that game… they play a slower brand of footy and it can frustrate,” said King.

“I just feel like if Cripps and Murphy ran out of puff because of limited pre-seasons, if they had ten more minutes in them they’d get Richmond.

“They need to find a couple of goals offensively, they still hover around that high 80, low 90 mark – they should have been able to put 110 points on Carlton at this stage.

“I think Damien would look at that game and say that was a horrendous performance.”

And yet when talking about Collingwood they will lament Dane Swans injury, the drug scandal which affected the players performance along with the moving of the game which undoubtedly put 80 points on the result
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Sitting next to a collingwood supporter yesterday afternoon watching the port/saints game that's exactly the excuses they gave.

Sorry but he is correct IMO. Every other team recruited multiple players from other clubs except for us. Yarran and Townsend.... That is it. We also promoted Castagna who looks like he is not ready and we have Moore, Marcon, Broad and the like that I would have thought were fighting to get in the side, banging the door down, but that hasn't been the case and we still play a player like Morris who is clearly finished. We have Batchelor and Chaplin that will come in next week no doubt and if we have to rely on those players then we are done.

Other than Martin, Jack, Rance and the sometimes Cotchin we really don't have a lot of class and the variance between those three and the rest is like the gap these days between the rich and poor. You could count Deledio in that group as well but when he is out boy do we resemble the poor.
DIMMA - You will be held ACCOUNTABLE...

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

Against Carlton we had 9 players missing from the team that beat Hawthorn in round 17 last year. Only Newman has retired , a fit Yarran would seem an adequate replacement.....is it any wonder we looked like a truckload of chook poo.

Same number of possessions Cotchin had against North. I agree it's a problematic number
