I’m a little but concerned but I guess fair enough. Ease him in slowly. Getting 16-18 games out of him would be a huge tick so would rather we be conservative.

AFL have become a farce.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

The details and severity of Lynch’s foot injury have constantly changed across the past 10 months, although the two-time All-Australian is now back training with the Tigers.

While he won’t play Round 1, Nathan Broad is confident of Lynch returning sooner rather than later to lead the Tigers’ forward line.

“He (Lynch) hasn’t had a setback as such, it’s just more he’s on the right track and we don’t want to push him too much,” Broad added.

“There’s no setback there, he’s going great guns. He’s in drills at the moment and looks like he hasn’t missed a beat, it’s been a long time out for Tom so there’s no reason to push him.

“We’ve got a five-day break after Gold Coast (in Opening Round) into Carlton, so these things are being weighed up by the fitness staff… we’ve just got to pick the right time and I’m sure the blokes on the big bucks will pick the right time to play him.

“But it will be early in the season, I would say.”

Prior to last year, Lynch had played at least 18 games in every season as a Tiger.

Tom Lynch has only just returned to full training and will complete a mini pre-season over the next few weeks before he is given the green light to return.

The 31-year-old didn't run for nine months after breaking his foot against the Western Bulldogs in round four last season.

Lynch has been ruled out of Opening Round but is pushing to be available for the round one clash against Carlton five days later, however Yze said they won't play the 2022 Jack Dyer medallist until he banks enough work, given his injury history.

"He is starting full training, so we are working out what block of training he needs to be physically ready to get through the season, whether that's three weeks or four weeks, we will make that decision. We know he needs a small pre-season right now," he said.

"The last thing we want to do now that he is physically ready to play, but hasn't had a pre-season is (take risks) and look back and go, 'Well he had two weeks of full training, what did we expect?'. We’ve got to do the right thing by Tom to get him through the whole season.

"When he does start he doesn’t know any other way than going flat out. We love that about him, that's why he is a leader of our footy club. He is in a really good spot to start training. He'll get a good block in.

"I wouldn’t count out the Carlton game, it might be one more week. Right now he is starting and he has a month of training. Take the Gold Coast game out of it. Our fitness staff can plan a whole month of training. If he played Gold Coast he would struggle to play Carlton anyway, so that didn't make sense. His goal might be Carlton and then we'll make a decision closer to that game."

Lynch at HT said he's hoping to play round 1 (vs Carl). If not definitely round 2.

Lynch set for limited minutes on Richmond return

Lynch set for limited minutes on Richmond return

By Anna Harrington, AAP

Richmond coach Adem Yze is confident returning spearhead Tom Lynch can have an impact in limited minutes against Carlton as the Tigers seek a response to their opening-round performance.

Lynch, Dustin Martin and Tony Nankervis will all feature in Thursday night's blockbuster at the MCG after sitting out Saturday night's 39-point loss to Gold Coast.

Brilliant key forward Lynch hasn't played since breaking his foot in round four last year but has been carefully built up and will clearly give Richmond more structure up forward.

"He would have struggled to get up for a five-day break. So the plan around him playing this game was just the smartest option. But he's got a good block of training," Yze said.

"But we've got to temper that with the fact that we're still going to manage him through his first game of footy for 12 months.

"So he's not going to have massive game time, he's going to be off the ground, which he's not gonna like.

"But ... he's too important for us to go out and string him out for 100 minutes of the game. But it's just good to have the big fella back."

Yze was confident the patient build-up to Lynch's recovery would allow the hulking forward to make an impact against the Blues.

"He's a competitive guy that he'll want to have an impact on the game," Yze said.

"So he's ready to play, we'll just manage his game time.

"Not to say that he'll play 50 per cent because we need him out there a fair bit more than that."

Martin will balance his time between midfield and attack on his return from a corky.

Richmond conceded 11 goals in a row against the Suns to trail by 67 points in the second quarter but responded to spare some blushes.

"I thought our response came after half-time so we're hoping we've found that formula and hope we just start that way," Yze said.

"Our players would be embarrassed with the way we started.

"We reviewed that. We had the review really quickly, obviously with the five-day break.

"So we did that. We had a bit of cleansing session over in the Gold Coast to get that out of the way so that when we walked back in the building here we could focus on Carlton. So our players have done that really well."

Yze admitted inexperienced key backs Josh Gibcus and Tylar Young would have their work cut out against Blues power forwards Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay.

"We've got some options but I think that's gonna keep me up at night, the two big forwards for the Blues," Yze said.

"They're two amazing players and (an) awesome opportunity for some young players, hopefully."
