Tigers provide Dusty update after kidney scare

HeraldSun
February 1, 2022

Richmond star Dustin Martin is back to his usual playing weight and has been cleared to return to full contact training almost seven months after suffering a lacerated kidney.

Martin lost about 15kg after being injured in a collision with Brisbane’s Mitch Robinson in Round 18 last year, but has put the weight back on after a bumper summer on the track and in the gym.

Martin has been completing most of the work on the track with the Tigers’ main group for the past three weeks, but is being integrated back into full contact work this week as preparations ramp up ahead of pre-season matches in early March.

“He’ll be available to play all of those games,” Richmond Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge told News Corp.

“He’s back to his usual playing weight but the main thing is his strength and power markers in the gym. That’s what we’re looking at and typically they line up with his weight being around the same it’s been for the last five or six years.

“Everything’s pretty normal with Dustin right now. He has done a lot of hard work. It’s the hard work here but it’s also the work he does outside as well. He’s got some pretty strong routines.”

'Get that bull back': The Tigers' big plans for Dusty in 2022

Dustin Martin's role is likely to change in 2022 as he looks to rediscover his best form

By AAP
3 February 2022

JACK Riewoldt says there is a "buzz" around Dustin Martin as the Richmond superstar attempts to rediscover his best form this season.

Martin is back in full training after recovering from surgery to repair a lacerated kidney, which cut short his 2021 campaign.

But Riewoldt is confident a reinvigorated Richmond can contend once more in 2022, forecasting a tweak to Martin's role that could help spark the revival upon his return.

"He's got a bit of a buzz around him at the moment and I feel like maybe there is a little bit of hunger there to get back to where he was," Riewoldt said.

"The way we use him this year will be interesting as well.

"He's obviously such a talented player and we may push him into the midfield a little bit more to see if we can get that bull from 2017 back again.

"He will give himself the best chance to be the best version of himself.

"I've got full belief in Dustin. He's always taken his game to the next level.

"Whenever I've thought that he might've been at his peak he's been able to go again.

"We look forward to seeing him back out there and I'm sure the fans do too."

Away from football, Martin has mourned the loss of his father Shane, who died in New Zealand in December.

"It's been a really difficult time for Dustin ... and it's probably been amplified by the fact he hasn't been able to go and see (his father) and didn't get to see him before his passing," Riewoldt said.

"As mates, more than anything else, you just rally around your friend and provide the support you can."

Is 'Dusty' still the best player in the competition? (zerohanger)

Is 'Dusty' still the best player in the competition?

Ben Lawless

Before last year’s grand final, there was little debate over who the best player was in the competition. After his third Norm Smith Medal, Dustin Martin had solidified himself as one of the all-time greats and the one player that no one wanted to go against.

Fast-forward a year, and many have started to crown Petracca, Bontempeli, Wines or Oliver as the league's best player. While neither Richmond nor Martin lived up to their high expectations, it wasn’t a lost year for the Tiger's premiership hero.

Prior to his season-ending kidney injury, Martin was still playing elite-level football. While he had taken a slight dip from previous seasons, he was still averaging over 22.5 disposals and over a goal a game. Only Marcus Bontempeli and Christian Petracca managed those averages in the 2021 season.

The drop in his numbers is due to his role on the team. With excellent midfield depth coming through Bolton, Graham, Ross, Baker, Collier-Dawkins, Dow and McIntosh all pushed for stoppage selection last year.

During the Richmond Dynasty of 2017-2020, Martin would spend 66% of his time in the midfield during the home and away season. Comparing that to last season, he only spent 45% of his game time in the midfield. That 32% drop-off in midfield minutes reflects his diminished statistics for the season. For context, his best season over that time was 2017 when he won the Brownlow with close to 30 disposals a game. Last season saw close to a 25% decrease from that Brownlow season.

During the 2021 season, Richmond instead used Martin similarly to how he was used in the finals. Over that same time frame, Martin spent 46% of his time in the midfield. Instead, he was being played more one-on-one up forward. His disposals dropped to 24 per game over the twelve finals appearances, instead of having more of an impact on the scoreboard. score assists, score involvements, goals and contested disposals all increased when played more as a forward option.

Over his career, he has also demonstrated an ability to elevate his game in the biggest matches of the year. As a genuine matchwinner, he has swung the momentum of multiple games off his own boot.

While not performing with the same consistency as previous years, he still was able to assert his dominance throughout last season. Games of four goals/28 disposals (Giants), three goals/27 disposals (Essendon), one goal/34 disposals (St Kilda) and two goals/31 disposals (Carlton) were some game-winning performances that he had throughout 2021.

While Martin has hit his 30s, there is still plenty of high-level football left for the Richmond champion. Missing the end of the season could prove to be a blessing in disguise. This will be the longest break that Martin has had between matches for his entire career. That rest could leave him fresher and more driven than we have seen for the past few years.

Teams should be fearful of what Martin can produce in 2022. With the motivation of missing the finals, a potential captaincy and the tragic passing of his father Shane, expect a bounce-back season for Martin. He might not reach his 2017 career-best football but expect when September rolls around, Martin will regain his throne as the number one player.

He's clearly not the best anymore.

Still one of the most dangerous near goal.

Probably the best big game player if we get to finals.

Sheds he's 30 though. Not a spring chicken anymore.

Spin the magnets: The players set for new roles and positions at every AFL club in 2022

RICHMOND

Richmond veteran Jack Riewoldt this week flagged teammate Dustin Martin was set for more midfield time in 2022 after playing closer to goal over the past three seasons. After a lacerated kidney ended his 2021 campaign prematurely, a leaner-looking Martin has since returned to Richmond training. Riewoldt on Thursday told reporters: “We may push him into the midfield a little bit more to see if we can get that bull from 2017 back again.” If the 30-year-old can recapture that 2017-like form this season, Tigers fans are in for a mightily exciting season.

Richmond remains hopeful Dustin Martin will be fit for Round 1 after a pre-season setback.

It’s understood Martin has an adductor niggle, with the club opting to be cautious with their Brownlow Medallist.

“Dustin was pretty close to playing, (it) was a slight hip issue and we expect him to be fine next week,” McQualter added.

‘Not Richmond’s best’: AFL legend disses Dusty

Richmond superstar Dustin Martin has been hailed as one of the game’s greatest players, but AFL legend Kevin Sheedy says he’s not even Richmond’s best.

HeraldSun
20 February 2022

Everyone says that about Dusty, the greatest ever. Dusty is about 2/3 (of the way) up Bartlett’s ladder.”

The argument has merit statistically, with Sheedy declaring the stats speak for themselves; Bartlett played 403 VFL games between 1965 and 1983, is a five-time premiership player, Norm Smith medallist, was Richmond’s captain in 1979, five times club best and fairest winner, four times leading goal kicker for the yellow and black, Tigers Hall of Fame inductee and kicked 778 goals and 781 points.

Bartlett’s win/loss ratio was 67 per cent.

“And I don’t include Brownlows,” the former Essendon and GWS coach said.

Sheedy is the one of the most equipped to offer up his thoughts and critique his contemporaries, or those that followed.

The 74-year-old played 251 games for Richmond, he also coached Essendon football club and was appointed the Greater Western Sydney Giants inaugural coach for a total of 635 games.

Martin on the other hand is widely considered one of the best of his generation, some even suggest he is among the best of all time.

He’s played 260 games for the Tigers for a win/loss ratio of 57 per cent – 10 per cent less than Bartlett.

But his playing career speaks volumes; he is a two time best and fairest winner for Richmond, four times All Australian, three times Norm Smith medallist for best player in a grand final and three times premiership star.

The 30-year-old has 291 goals and 195 behinds but has played more time in the centre than Bartlett did, who played the majority of his football up forward.
