In the Mix: Round 5

Nick Vlastuin will have to get through this week at training to be deemed fit by the Tigers but should return for round five. It would make for an unlucky omission from Richmond's outfit that comfortably accounted for the Western Bulldogs on the weekend. Ben Miller could be the guy to miss, although not a like-for-like. Judson Clarke (four goals) was a VFL standout while Tyler Sonsie is also getting closer to his AFL debut. Sydney Stack may also be a chance to come in for the Tigers.

Verdict: Vlastuin in for Miller.

Agree. Miller has to stay he is genuine Kpd size and our future kpd we dont want tarrant retireing and miller has just a hand ful of games to his name.
Fail to play this bloke and also run the risk of him seeking more opportunity elsewhere and you could not blame him he has done his apprenticeship and now in his 5th season. Hardwick will just have to reshuffle some players like he has done for favorites or god forbid even make a hard call and drop one of them.

I'd also like to keep playing Miller at least until Grimes comes back.

Rest one of Gibcus/Cotch/Edwards this week for Vlaustin.

Triple-premiership Tiger set to return, winger in iso

By AAP - Just now

RICHMOND is set to welcome back triple-premiership star Nick Vlastuin from injury for his first game of the season against Adelaide.

The Tigers will make at least one forced change for Saturday's Adelaide Oval clash, with winger Kamdyn McIntosh unavailable through COVID-19 protocols.

And they are no closer to finding out when superstar Dustin Martin will return from personal leave.

But 173-game defender Vlastuin's recovery from a hamstring injury is welcome news as he looks to bolster an inexperienced backline.

Hugo Ralphsmith, Ben Miller, Josh Gibcus and Daniel Rioli will benefit from Vlastuin's guidance in defence, particularly given the ongoing absence of co-captain Dylan Grimes (hamstring).

"He (Vlastuin) is one of those players that makes those around him better," Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said.

"Players walk a little bit taller with him in the side because of the way he goes about it.

"We've got a relatively inexperienced defence that is growing week by week and players like Nick help that."

Vlastuin has endured multiple injury setbacks since he was knocked out in the opening stages of the 2020 Grand Final.

The 27-year-old managed just 12 games last year - when he was sidelined for two months after knee surgery - and missed the opening month of this season.

"Internally we rate him very highly and he's had a bit of a horror run the last couple of years," Hardwick said.

"The possession game defenders are very valuable and Nick is also very good offensively as well, makes very good decisions.

"He's such an important player to the way we play the game and when he's playing his best footy generally we're having a good run.

"Hopefully we can keep him on the park for the rest of the year."

Hardwick said there is no update to Martin's status, with Richmond still unable to put a timeline on the three-time Norm Smith medallist's return.

The 30-year-old took personal leave last month and is mourning the loss of his father, Shane, who died in New Zealand in December.

"He's got our full support to go about his business and achieve what he needs to achieve," Hardwick said.

"We'll be fully supportive of that and there's no rush from our point of view."

What are these protocols that keep getting mentioned?

Has he caught a sniffle or walked past someone with COVID?

Anyway, this should keep Miller in the side at least. Vlastuin can play back and I would even consider Rioli on the wing, or Short.

Why don’t we call it COVID?
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Because it might just be close contact not actual Covid

Like a leg injury vs a knee or an ankle.
If it’s covid call it covid, if it’s close contact then let’s hear about it.
From what I’m hearing, a number of covid positive cases are affected physically for more than a week despite being able to play so it’s a relevant distinction

they are all pretty much atrocious options, especially Castagna/Aarts playing wing. Mansell in as a defender would be fine. Stack into the side would be cool if he's half fit.

Personally I reckon it's a good chance to see if anyone can provide what McIntosh can defensively but more offensively..

I'd try Castagna on the wing. Quick, fit and a good mark.

Kicking hardly worse than kmac
